So I'm watching your videos since a long time and they helped me a lot through a complete house renovation of an old house (round 1900). Thanks for that. Fun Fact: Since I am in the Netherlands and most of our products are sold in the whole Benelux, they are also branded in french and everytime you show the french side of your products it helps me A LOT in finding a somewhat equivalent here on the other side of the pond!
this might be the first time in history that Canadian French proved useful to the world
@@ssl3546 lol...
I've been watching a ton of your videos while I've been working on drywalling my house. You need to add a disclaimer to your videos that say "I am making this look a billion times easier than it actually is"
2 Things:
1) I'm sitting here watching this video, when one of my kids walked in and asked, "What the hell are you watching?" Then they stood there and watched it all with me, haha.
2) I didn't think that the glue additive would do much, because of how thinned it is, with the water and mud. You should test this same thing as you did here, but with a painted surface rather than just a piece of sheetrock.
I, and many others, love your videos, man. Keep it up! We thank you
Funny thing- I was watching this video and my 6 year old granddaughter sat down and was mesmerized by it... asking engaging questions, and watched the whole thing too.
Perfect timing on this video! I’m finishing my basement and I’ve been binge watching your videos for the last month, I appreciate you!
Same! I bought easy sand 90 for prefilling, all purpose for taping and plus 3 for finishing. Hoping it turns out. I would have otherwise bought the plus 3 for everything ad it's what stores push to the front page.
@@tannerkennedy4941dude….i just went thru this, get some taping mud for taping if you are a beginner…could save you a lot of time if you go through the same thing as me 😂
I just subscribed earlier today at work and have been binge watching your videos! You can tell you’re just a real genuine person and I love that!
Glad u mentioned what warranty really is for had this conversation a few times about small jobs.
Why not prepare half of the drywallsheet for your demonstration with a painted surface. It would be interesting to see each system/solution for both un-painted and painted drywall.
before i found your channel my local lumberyard told me to use lite line 3 to tape because i was new and thats what they recommended to new tapers. I had horrible results. So i appreciate everything I've learned from your channel. now i use the right mud for the job.
Often it is easier to learn with easy to use products.
Thanks to your vids, I’m super confident in drywalling for the first time. Keep up the great work!
I have never seen tape fail to adhere with any kind of mud except for an occasional blister. I think it is from a dry spot either from a poor bedding coat or I am using the mud too stiff. I hate the plop, plop, plop of the mud dripping off my knife onto the floor, my clothes and my head so I use the mud on the stiff side. I have switched to Fiba-Fuse everywhere but corners and haven't seen a blister in a long time. That makes me happy.
I use fiba-fuse + hot mud for all repair joints. It isn't as strong as paper tape, but it is so much easier to work with, and is actually strong enough. I have some I did several years ago, and it is still holding up well. I mix the hot mud fairly thin, and make sure to really work it into the fiba-fuse and not wipe it all out. Sticks very well. Had to pull some off one time and it was not easy to remove.
This is great timing for me as well. I finally hung some drywall in my reno, and I have some problem areas where I will be using durabond and I wanted to know about combining that with paper tape
The worst problem that you run into with hot mudding paper tape is if your hot mud has any dry powder lumps in it, you won't be able to make repeated passes with your taping knife over the lump to blend it into the surrounding mud.
This will definitely cause pocketing and bubbling under your paper tape.
So the issue that I have with this method is that it slows you down and forces you to fully mix your hot mud in your mud pan before ever apply it onto the wall including some of the other reasons that are outlined in this video.
This is why I never use paper tape with hot mud, even though its 100% doable.
Excellent videos by the way and thank you for the channel and great content!
You should do the same test with fiba fuse and mesh. Thanks bro, I have learned a ton from your videos. I definitely did a few jobs wrong. Haven't heard anything back from the homeowners though so it must be hanging on still.
I have been waiting for this for a while! Thanks Ben!!
Dope sweater. Also, awesome vid, all your vids are so useful thank you so much.
Nice test. I would be cool to see the same test over eggshell paint.
Thanks!
Thank you!!!!
You definitely have to work one your French, however thank you for your time and expertise my brother, extremely informative
I would have to have French to work on it
@@vancouvercarpenter We enjoy all your videos
Great video. I’d like to see another test like one with 2 of each brand like this but one with dry tape and one with wet tape.
Love the videos! Keep them coming.
Thanks for the tips on using fast set on painted walls. I work in restoration, so all of my drywall work ties into existing painted walls. I've noticed that I have a bit of trouble with the mud flaking off before it's 100% dry on the paint side (I have to use fast set because of tight timelines dictated by insurance companies). I'm going to start mixing a bit of glue in moving forward based on your recommendation 🙂
From what I've read, the problem with hot mud thin layers is when the mud dries before it can set. The setting process needs to consume moisture, and if it runs out then it ends up weak and crumbly. Maybe you could get better results with a shorter time mud so it has less chance to dry out.
Always informative videos, thank you!
Ben I like how you switch from your venture hoodie to your carhartt hoodie depending on your channel
I used your videos to help me drywall my sunroom. Needed to replace the whole ceiling. The seams are lumpy but not blistering and its been 4 years. Next time I have to do a whole room I'll rent a drywall sander with dust collection. I need to remember I'm 38, not 28 😂
They add perlite to the mud to make it lightweight and to let it dry faster.
Perlite is volcanic glass that has a lot of bound water in it. When heated the water is dislodged, turns to superheated steam and expands the glass in the same way steam expands popcorn. It’s very porous and lightweight.
It is interesting that all of them peeled more evenly from the left. I wonder if there was something about the direction in which you wiped the tape out that made that possible? Having used Durabond to tape with FibaFuse before, I was gratified to see how well it performed. I have a soft spot in my heart for Durabond. Excellent video. Thanks for creating it. Makes me feel confident using Durabond, EasySand, or General Purpose when taping.
When he pulled from the right, it was a direct pull back. On left, he tended to pull more at and angle.
I literally just did all my first time taping a house with quickset and paper tape, abd it all solid as and no issues. Has been up for around 3 months. Still all fine.
I'm a novice and I accidentally did a 2 foot patch using paper tape and drydex heavyweight spackle, not watered down or anything. Tape didn't bubble or lift, can't tell there was ever a hole in the wall. I kinda think drywall is simpler than some people make it out to be. Apply goop to wall, make flat.
The hardest part I've found is doing a bigger job and looking for all the imperfections when sanding😂 and having to fix them when needed. Its kind of a f my life time in the process.
Drywall in general is not difficult to learn and do well. But being able to do a lot of it quickly is VERY difficult. What a pro can do in one hour takes me nearly all day. Mine will look approximately as good as his when I'm done, but it will take me A LOT more time.
Of all the RUclipsrs and videos I watch, your the only one who doesn’t thin the all purpose (green pale) with some water. All your other tips and tricks are consistent with others except this one. Is there a reason for this? Love your vids!!!!
It wasn’t a new bucket. It’s already had some water and a spin.
Great video, thanks, Ben 😊 👍
I’m about to do a repair over paint later this week. Perfect timing. I’ll use durabond 90 with a little glue
Off topic, but have you seen or can you do a review of the "Quiet Rock" drywall? I've known about the noise reduction trick of double 5/8ths wall board with "green adhesive" between or offset walls (2x6 plates with offset 2x4 studs to uncouple shared walls). In concept, a pre-made multi-layer wall board seems interesting. Does it work? I saw int he specs the "545" top end had a steel sheet in it ... that would be hard cutting.
Your french is pretty good haha :P Love your video !
Great timing
Hot mud like 5 minutes or (adding excelsior I don’t know if it still is made) I sometimes soaked a tape role in water to help it stick to the mud but the tape will stretch a lot and it doesn’t help much
VC kudos for sharing valuable info. 🔥
I always used Durabond for taping but unfortunately it is no longer available in my area. All they carry now is lightweight easy sand as a replacement which I will not use. I had it shrink up too much and crack long the paper Edge. Was it a bad batch probably, but I still will never go through that again. So now I've just been using straight up all purpose for doing my joints.
Although I have also used quick set muds with paper tape for years. I have noticed the 20 min westpac brand hot mud doesn't adhere to paper tape as well as a taping or all purpose mud. I wish Westpac made it to the testing board.
Maybe it’s not a matter of adhesion, but suction. I imagine quick set would provide more diction and perhaps would help hold the paper tape
The quick set and mesh tape makes a stronger bond. Kind of like concrete and wire mesh. 😅
Very informative. Thank you very much sir.
Thanks so much for doing this test! You mention using hot mud with glue on painted walls -- what about ready-mix mud on painted walls? Is USG all purpose (no glue) as good as hot mud with glue for this? Would you ever add glue to ready mix? I guess it would be harder to mix the glue evenly into ready mix, but if you're adding water anyways, your water bottle mixing technique might work there. Recently had a big adhesion fail and i've no idea why, and I've been going overkill since then : /
Didn't expect to see a sick crooked grind thrown in here lol That ruled.
I often use paper tape with hot mud, but I glue it to the drywall directly first. Typically I’ll do that If I have a smaller patch job and I don’t want to open a whole thing of standard mud and I’m trying to keep the build out small. Keeps the paper as close to the drywall as possible. Once some paper tape and titebond III dries, it’s crazy strong..
That’s interesting. Do you fill the gap first? Or what is the process?
@Vancouver Carpenter, I always seem to have issues getting my paint to adhere after I've sanded my seams and dusted them off. What am I doing wrong? Can you please make one of your amazing videos on how to best clean and prep for painting after the sanding process? You're like the Bob Ross of drywall and learning from your experience is extremely helpful.
Use a drywall primer before paint. It will penetrate through the dust and lock it in. Paint just floats on top of the dust and won't adhere properly. Pole sand primer with 120-150 grit before paint.
Agreed, probably not using a primer which is a lot thinner and soaks in better.
Well, I feel better about my bathroom reno last weekend. I used paper and 90 because I had it already on hand.
Was just watching your curb form build and saw a new video pop up lol
Im in the drywall finishing union in WV and all we use is plus3 for everything
I mean it works but I think there are better muds for taping.
@@vancouvercarpenter totally agree buddy awesome video love the content
Wouldn’t hot mud be stronger with tape? Seems like unions would be all for a better result.
Great video. So your first hot mud would be like a Sheetrock 90?
Do similar test with mesh tape and paper tape in factory joint and how much you can twist and pull before crack will be visible on both.
Thanks! Very helpful.
Been watching lots of your videos to help renovate my house here in the UK. Been lots of help, thanks. But been using British Gypsum (part of Saint-Gobain) Easifill, which I think is equivelent to your all purpose but not sure. Wondering if you know what the equivelents would be for us in the UK please? Thanks for the help and videos.
What do you do with the excess hot mud when you finish a part and there's some left over? Just toss it? Is it easy to clean off your tools?
There’s a reason why hot mud doesn’t come premixed in pail. Because once you add water to the powdered product, the timer begins. Leftover is garbage. So it’s very different from green top in that way. But just wipe your tools and hawk/ pan as you go and wash your tools clean when you’re done using them like you would with green top. It doesn’t flash over into something like tile -grout- mortar. Old-fashioned heavy hot mud may be closer, but not ridiculous. Just stay clean and organized.
@@chriskelvin248 got it
Hot mud turns into a rock at roughly the specified number of minutes on the bag. If you can't use it in that time, you trash it.
If you don't push your time, it cleans off your tools just like ready mix. If you wait too long, you can scrape off one knife with another. I use a hawk rather than a mud pan so I can scrape it with a knife too. Actually mine has a permanent smooth layer of compound on it. I imagine a mud pan is a real mess if you don't clean it up in time. I bet many a mud pan has been tossed when it wasn't cleaned in a timely manner.
In Australia we use hot mud all the time infact a lot of people think multi purpose is not strong enough for tapping
Know a couple people that use the regular lightweight for all processes and I tell them it is not as good, but they just say it hasn't caused any problems yet
I think people have it backwards. You can use paper tape with hot mud or mesh tape. You’re not supposed to bed mesh tape with bucket mud. I taped a bunch of drywall in my house with mesh tape and bucket mud and a couple years later I had several cracks. I looked up the specs on the mesh tape and it says it should only be bedded with hot mud
All we can get in my area is cgc all purpose in buckets and boxes of all purpose lite. Basically everyone i know uses all purpose lite for all steps. I dont mind taping with all purpose but it sucks for finishing and is terrible for sanding . Certianteed mud is available also but personally dont like it
Wow - just did my whole house with all purpose Plus 3 lightweight. I had only one blister in the whole job, dime sized. I work with it pretty wet for the first coat though, so far, so good.
It will be fine👍
Yes it will Ben- mostly thanks to what I've learned from you. My work from a year ago was really poor, now thanks to your instruction, it is much better. Thanks for all you do.@@vancouvercarpenter
How big of a deal is it to have frayed drywall joints? I’m drywalling my garage ceiling with 5/8” and in order to make it fit in some small spots, I took a utility knife and cut the beveled edge to make it fit against an already hung piece. It left a bit of a messy, uneven edge. Will taping and mudding pretty much hide this or should I take these pieces down and recut?
I get what you're doing here but you did a similar test but in that test you put mud on top of the tapes as well and that is really weird the tape gets its strength so basically all of the mud you used in this video pretty much has plenty of strength once you put mud on top of them all for the second coat. All tape and mud are going to crack depending on how much movement is involved. There are definitely some better tape out there and some better mud out there but typically it's going to crack the first time around Then after you repair the crack with the better stuff then hopefully the crack will not return but if there's enough movement again it's going to crack
Thank you for all your videos. Is there any difference in the final strength for the differently timed hot muds? In other words does, 20min mud cure more strongly than 210min mud?
14:28 probably beacuse going from right to left before it tears your are basically pulling it on itself into a U shape, but when you're pulling left to right you're more off pulling it away from piece in more of an L shape or a more obtuse L shape
How do u prep a painted wall prior to putting different types of mud. Do u sand it and add weldbond to green lid all purpose to make sure the paper tape sticks?
Hot mud with tape makes sense with repairs since the mud will fill in larger gaps and harden fairly fast.
I'm really curious how these all perform against Proform mud in the black lid bucket. That's what I use almost exclusively unless I need a quick set mud. I'm on the east coast of America. If you can get your hands on that product, I'd love to see your reaction to it.
I'm sure it's probably similar to green lid.
If I'm not mistaken Pro-form has latex added into it which is a little different then other compounds.
Yeah there is something different about it for sure. It's similar to the green lid, but it sands a lot nicer and I can get a smoother finish with it.
Could you make a video on how to hang heavy items on drywall with steel studs? I don't see too much of that on youtube. Everything is either wood studs, or drywall anchors.
Just use fine thread screws if you can and make sure to hit the stud but don’t over tighten. Add some glue if you can
@@vancouvercarpenter Thanks, wasn't sure if screwing to steel studs was a good way of doing that considering how thin those are. Even with fine threaded screws, you get maybe 1 or 2 threads grabbing the stud?
@@seanrobinsonjr4363 It still works pretty well. As long as your not trying to hang hundreds of pounds off of a few screws you should be fine. If they grab properly you are probably getting 30 to 40 pounds per screw minimum.
Never knew you were a skater, but that makes sense.
So do you just stick to your preferred compound?
What are your thoughts on using a heat gun/air to quick dry hot mud for example, in order to prime/paint it on the same day.
Don't do it until after it sets. It needs to set before it dries or the chemical reaction will not finish and your mud will be weak.
I know it’s not common but I am really curious about how to do a coved ceiling
Great content, setting compound and tape is all we use here in New Zealand !
I am a DIYer, so I want to know if you can mix the heavyweight all-purpose in the lightweight? Does that help with the dry out under the tape problem?
Have you ever used all purpose lightweight the light green lid
I’ve should’ve waited a little longer soon as I hit play you were using the lightweight lol
I'm getting ready to mud my basement so I reviewing all your videos. 1200sqft. All prayers will be appreciated.
So if I've taped a bunch of patches with pro-form quick set lite and nothing has failed I should start a RUclips channel right?😅
Ive even used painters tape with hot mud, worked just fine!
Now I know you’re trolling for sure 👍
@@vancouvercarpenternot familiar with the trowling method or trolling as you call it, I just use a knife and plastic pan. Perhaps I'll do a video to explain.
i use hot mud(durabond) for setting paper tape many times without any issues. mesh tape is too bougie for me. 😁🤣😅
I have used paper routinely with 90 and 45 min hot mud with zero issues.
Can you try with 20 and 5 min?
I done even use that stuff as it sets way faster than I need it to.
Possibly, it’s too fast to penetrate into the paper for proper adhesion?
It still works good 👍
I've also used paper tape with my hot mud for years, and have never had an issue.
Pretty cool… but what trucks are you riding right now?
9:24 “Boughten” ?? Hahaha
Is that French as well??
Just kidding!! Great series of videos. Learning a lot. Thank you.
Tour of the work van/truck?
Oh NO! The Internet conventional-wisdom army will descend! "But, everyone knows that..."
do you ever pre-wet your paper tape?
Great tips. Thank you for the tutorial. At least you tried to speak espanol. 😊
The myth is you can't use mesh tape with premixed mud. People have been using paper tape with hot mud since the dawn of time.
Stay rad brother 💚🤙🏻
Do you think wetting the tape would help? Or does it just create a bonding problem
I have a video on that. I recommend watching it.
Front k grind was ste!
What do you think concrete fill's adhesion is like ?
Good. But it builds up to much to tape with
certainteed yellow mud box sticks better then anything on the market
Quick question, fixing a bubbled paper tape inside corner.
I heard you cannot paper tape over dry mud and need to use mesh. True or mostly true? Going to hot mud and mesh, but curious your opinion
Not true at all.
I mean, you can’t make tape stick to dry mud with out using wet mud but that kind of goes without saying.
Hey thanks for replying! Been following and feathering the like button for years! Good to know, you got back so quick that I think Ill use paper tape then.
I do it all the time to think I seen you do it first
I can tell you right now that I always tape paper with hot mud.
Yeah, dunno why hot mud would adhere to panel paper but not the tape. Maybe the myth is based on the idea that you can't use mesh tape with ready-mix.
bro you came back from cali burnt to a crisp lmao
I'd love to see how the tape adheres using JUST the glue. Always seemed to me like you could get the absolute flatest butt joint if we could just use straight glue instead of mostly mud with just a little bit of glue in it.
I’ve wondered that myself. You would need to have everything pre-filled first. Might be worth trying on some scrap for fun. I think if it was viable it would already be the norm.
@@vancouvercarpenter Has to be a matter of speed and simplicity: Mud works fine and you have the tools and skills to apply it already, why reinvent the wheel? Of course, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Would love to see a test.
of course you can use quickset and paper tape ...... quick set was around long before fiberglass
Rich guy got the bucket again 🪣
i have no idea what i just watched😅 my native language is german but i am fluent in english however there were many words i have never heard before in this context. Mud is earth with water for me not that stuff you stick on those walls.
nontheless good stuff! but i will stick to the skating channel^^
