  • If you are thinking about upgrading to 1 Ton axles for your offroad rig, this video is for you! There are a "Ton" of pros and cons to buying a set of crate axles or going the DIY Junkyard route. In this video, we take a look at the differences between the two and some of the pros and cons.
About 5 years ago, i finished up my DIY JK Junkyard 1 ton swap on my Jeep Wrangler JK. I made videos along the way, showing how to do it practically step by step. • 1 Ton Swap Video Series
While it is a fantastic way to swap to 1 tons on a budget, they do have some drawbacks.
Crate axles offer quite a few benefits, many of which might be worth the extra price tag depending on your skill level and planned use for the vehicle.
Even if you don't need full 1 ton axles, there are still some amazing axle upgrades including crate 44s and 60s that will bolt into your Jeep with minimal modifications to your existing setup, and these swaps can be a perfect upgrade!

A few more things that are worth mentioning.
-Ground Clearance, crate axles typically have housings designed for increased ground clearance at the diff.
-Weight, Junkyard axles can tend to be heavier than aftermarket assemblies.
-ABS/Wheel Speed Compatibility, Crate axles usually come with the correct tone ring count for modern wheel speed sensor systems, opposed to DIY axles where you have to trick the computer with odd gear and tire size calculations.
-Chromoly Axle Shafts, Crate axles typically come with new chromoly axle shafts, which offer more strength and are usually left out of the budgets of DIY Junkyard swaps.
-Steering, Advanced Driveline includes a full RPM Aluminum Steering setup with the axle, meaning no loss in steering angle or worries about building steering yourself.
-Ability to customize and spec and axle to fit your needs!

I just looked at a brand new left over 2023 ram 3500 6.7 regular cab long box 4x4. The price is $58,000 and change. The idea that these aftermarket axle companies charge $20K+ for a pair of axles is insane.

A great video and I am glad you basically stayed in the middle saying it comes down to a decision of what you can afford or what you are capable of doing. I did a 1 ton swap back in 06 before 1 ton swaps were really a thing and most of these crate axles were not even around. I have junkyard 35 spline, late 70s Ford Dana 60s with a kingpin front. It has held up very well over the years with only a couple repairs necessary but I do agree that modern crate axles have many advantages. The pricing you mentioned?!! Whoa! I spent $1200 for both axles (2006) and kept the stock gears. The front axle had disc brakes but I did spend money on a disc brake conversion for the rear one. All my speed reduction is in the t-case (spent the money on an Atlas) and junkyard SM465 trans for a 122:1 crawl ratio with stock 3.54 gearing. That's what I could afford and yes, it took a long time to set it all up lol

For some reason I thought your cost break-down 5 years ago came to between $14k-$15k for the Junk Yard 1 ton build and not $10k. I tried to find the cost break-down video from 5 years ago and I was having problems finding it.
One additional thing to consider - Any cost benefit for junk yard axles will be quickly eliminated if you cannot do all of the work yourself. For example - if you have to pay some one to install gears, etc.

My last rig I built my own rear axle, and had a shop install an ox in my front axle, then needed knuckles to work with my lift to clear steering, then broke stuff and in the end I would have spent about the same money on aftermarket, had less down time, and been comfortably over built. Next time I will be buying an axle set designed for my rig.

Yes but if you don't want to "keep up with the Jones" "I gotta have n run 40s" but run 35s and don't drive it like you stole it. A D30 high pinion will work for most. I've ran a XJ hard with just that for many years. Don't get me wrong I'd love to have been sticking a set of D-60s under it.
