Axle Teardown and Prep - JK 1 Ton Axle Swap Episode 2

  • Welcome back to the second episode of the JK 1 ton swap video series. If you missed the first episode i recommend watching it first, as i discuss the importance of the axles i am using and the benefits of this swap. Before starting the swap into my JK it is important to get these axles prepped and ready for the truss swap kit as well as any other bracket removal.
I went ahead and removed the carrier and ring gear, as well as the axle shafts.
To make the bracketry removal easier i would recommend a large angle grinder like this: amzn.to/2swhFUy
Go ahead and stock up on sawzall blades, grinding discs, cutoff wheels, and flap wheels.
In the next episode things start to get a little more technical and the fun starts happening :)
Thanks for watching, as as always be sure to give the video a thumbs up! If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask!
    -Ben

Rookie mistake, you forgot to air down the axle cart before hitting the dirt! ;) This is shaping up to be the best axle swap series on RUclips! Love it!

Awesome video - love the in-depth approach, and don't mind the video length at all - lots of great info! Doubt I'll ever do a 1-ton swap, but love seeing all the work needed to do one! Keep 'em coming, Ben! Love the "do, show, tell" method of explanation for the work - best way ever to transfer information! (DO it, SHOW what you're doing, TELL why it was done)

Glad your doing this video set. I wish I had the time to video series my YJ build but I just went in and tried to get it done ASAP. Took me pretty much every weekend last year building my jeep, LS swap, 1ton Dana 60's front and rear, fully rebuilt w/ new gears and ARBs and coilovers on each corner. Defiantly a ton of work but well worth it now. Great videos btw!

  • @jimschmidt4089

Enjoying the prep and you are correct when you say all the work is in the prep but it's worth it. Axles look amazing. I just swapped out my axles for a couple Dana 44 with elockers. Mine was simple compared to yours.
Interested in your next video. The video length isn't a big deal for me, filled with great information!

Pretty cool build. I like these videos. Not too many videos that are in depth of the newer 14 bolt with disc brakes. My current build is a Cherokee on tons. Bought it completely rust free and stock. Just got done completely frame stiffening it front to back. I'm just getting around to getting the axles in. I used a kingpin 60. Truss went on real easy and looks good. The rear is a newer 14 bolt I shaved and now getting it ready to paint. Both axles got lockers and 5.38 gears. It's a fun project. Learning as I go. The 14 bolt is the most simple axle I've ever worked on. Love to see what you do with yours. I'm new to the super 60 and curious about it as well. I subscribed. Can't wait to see more. If you plan on shaving the 14 bolt.. East coast gear supply has a great shave kit for a great price and they offer shaved gears for whatever ratio you choose.

Pull the gears, and the knuckles, and shafts from your 60 save yourself some back aches. I got mine on a dolly wratchet strapped to it so I can move it in and out of garage. But I can pick it up solo easily since all the guts are gone.

  • @bayouboattrash

I'm not sure what your experience is in painting or if you did it off camera. After touching that bare metal bare handed, it's usually good practice to wipe the bare metal down with some sort of solvent that doesn't leave behind a residue like acetone or denatured alcohol. The salt and oil from your skin will cause it to rust sooner. Not being a troll, just trying to help. Starting to look good man! I'm interested in putting a Dakota on one tons. I have the Dana 60 full float rear from a dodge 2500. Will more than likely go with the dodge dana 60 front from an 02 so I dont have to deal with the disconnect or get the disconnect kit. New subscriber here to get info and ideas! Thanks!

I'd be interested in a giveaway but I may be putting paint down before you do that. Second, while late, I highly recommend buying a good cutoff wheel. I have a Lenox diamond cutoff for my grinder. Was like $20 but way better than the composite cutoffs that wear out or break. Also, Diablo sawzall blades are well worth the money as well. Cut steel like butter. Looking good. Hope to be in the same place you left off this weekend. Great video as always man.

Nope! These axles have 10* of separation which is more than enough.
Plus with the locking hubs. You can have better caster and not worry about the driveshaft spinning when your driving on the road
