  • In “Love Us in the Light,” the first episode of Transnational, VICE News correspondent Eva Reign travels to Detroit to tell the story of Kelly Stough, a Black trans woman who was killed by a Detroit pastor in 2018 in what he claims was self defense. But Stough’s community paints a more complicated picture. Almost three years later, ahead of the trial of Stough’s killer, Reign immerses herself in Detroit’s ballroom community to learn how their effort to honor Stough’s memory has also become a fight to keep each other safe.

    this is one of the best vice features because of the interviewer. I'm so glad an actual trans woman of color was the one interviewing the community; it's clear how connected she is with the people she's speaking to, and it shows so much more care and consideration. really sad to see some of the comments and the current ratio, because this is an amazing piece.

I have family that went thru the army in the 70s and came out afterwards even tho he had a wife almost and loved her dearly now he regrets his entire life it hurts to watch more than just my uncle realizing how spiritually wicked they've been.. creating has turned into death and fun.. I don't even think about sex unless I'm having a baby right then I don't abuse my life anymore 3 woman sums, lust all of that death out the window now I enjoy my life more than I ever felt possible change isn't impossible it's just extremely hard when you don't want to... this is sad and we shouldn't be feeding pride to it.

      @@foxyrocky7522 You live in a fantasy world plain and simple! Sex and gender are one in the same and because those that are easily manipulated into believing in this orchestrated facade the end game is game over!
      I am a female a woman and if my son came to me with anything I would never turn him away but knowing what I know I would not call him a female and equip him with the full Blueprint that is not public knowledge!
      You don't know what you think you know! This isn't going to end nicely because you are vocal and visual puppets for a completely different agenda and when everyone can "identify" as whatever then under the umbrella of whatever then it's whatever it will be and nobody cares, not anyone white, Asian or that can pass visually! As you can clearly see that this way isn't working yet you continue with the narrative and terms The System that cares for no one gave you!
      You can't out someone that says they're a man that wishes he was female and doesn't call himself and or place himself in the female lane! What can someone really say to blunt open honesty? Not much, not much! You bully females in every way including murder then have the audacity to demand "female" prison terms, surgeries and special treatment because you're men! You're murderers are other men that bully and kill you isn't that ironic?
      The System that pretends to be on your side isn't it outs you then encourages your demise especially Black males and you're still begging The System for cares, mind-blowing! Again, if you weren't out there hating actual Black women while trying to be white women you might be able to see the lemons before purchase! Ask yourself what is identifying and alls these every second made-up terms really mean and end! This is how civilizations are destroyed! You're more worried about the name game than the actual person that looks like Lebron James in a wig and dress! Black males are encouraged to follow whites and Asians who are naturally more feminine and still see Blacks as lesser! If you think for one second I'm wrong then show me the numbers of these murders decreasing!

      Of course it's heartbreaking. Any loss of life is heartbreaking and it makes it even moreso when you find out that they were killed because of someone's hate and intolerance. However, trans is not anymore powerful than other people group. Yes, trans has made way for a lot of important things and have done a lot for our communities but really not more than other people who fight for their community. I and all of my trans friends agree on this. Stopping hate and violence is important across the board and every single person deserves to feel safe where they are and to be able to be who they are. I may have an affinity for one people group over another but I've got to think of everyone and what everyone brings to the table. The malcontents can be dealt with as we go but we need to equalize each other and stand arm in arm to push against the bigoted and the hateful and the violent.

      This doesn't frighten me at all, but I feel as if it is LITERALLY common sense not to hook up with strangers or to provide sex work without acknowledging or preparing for the fact that you're endangering your life by doing so. The best friend changed life around quickly and got a job and a car after the murder, so I'm at a loss as how it is so "necessary" for trans to do sex work? Regardless, I don't see this as a hate crime because it's not trans exclusive. Anyone who regularly hooks up with strangers or performs sex work could become a victim. This has happened to straight men and women, gay men and women as well as transgendered people. You have to be willing to protect yourself by not putting yourself at risk if you don't want to be murdered. Otherwise, you're an easy target.

    • @thegreatgoddess9149

      @@ChildOfYAHUUH What about police officers or soldiers... Do they deserve to be killed because they make a living from a job where their life could be in danger? If everyone thought like that then we would have no protect us. And a lot of trans people are kicked out by their family and they have to resort to doing sex work or else they will STARVE. They have no financial support and have to have their basic needs met so what should we expect to happen?

    • @ChildOfYAHUUH
      @ChildOfYAHUUH 3 года назад +1

      @@thegreatgoddess9149 You're reaching. Providing a service to protect and serve is in no way, shape or form similar to sex work. Besides that, police officers and soldiers are provided training and are armed in preparation to face an enemy. Sex workers voluntarily put their lives at risk. There are countless resources for them to take advantage of; those resources which cater specifically to LGBTQ besides the ones which assist the general public. There are employment agencies which work with employers and ensure that the people whom they send out for employment aren't discriminated against. Where there's a will, there's a way if a person is willing to put in the effort. There are too many opportunities for the people of the LGBTQ community for them to be using the same excuses they used 30 years ago when that type of discrimination was prominent and tolerated. These days, discrimination is taken very seriously and have detrimental consequences, so there's really no excuse for a person to be doing sex work except that it is what they choose to do for fast and easy hook ups and money. And if you're not willing to protect yourself, then you shouldn't be looking for anyone else to do what you're not willing to do for yourself. They need to stop putting themselves in situations where they can be murdered because it's a reality for any and everyone.

    Canadian, glow-in-the-dark white bi Christian here. This is a great doc! The moms are awesome. I’m a mom myself who grew up in a church that preached hate…and then learned when my family left that quite a few of these “upstanding” people who judged my family so harshly were hiding *a lot*. My family is now understanding that when we blend the love that Christianity should have if we’re really following faith with remembering the basics (eg thou shalt not kill, love thy neighbour, etc), hate has no place. We attend affirming churches where all are welcome…and hopefully more will start to see this way too. My biological kids are discovering whom they are and I am with them the whole way on that ride. I get the mom’s fears…as the increase in hate seems to be increasing worldwide, I just hope my kids find far more acceptance than hate. At least I know they will stand up for the former and challenge the latter.

I don’t know how a pastor of all people can not only live a double life like that but turn around and commit murder. It’s now mid 2022 but yet he’s still not gone to court. Shameful.
