Even before we get to the twin hallway, I'm already creeped out by the camera being so far behind Danny. The audience realizes two things: 1) He's too far away for anyone to get to to protect him and 2) when he's out of the shot, we're alone so no one can protect us either
If you start considering that the hotel is the true villain of the movie then the shots imply two things. 1) Something is standing outside room 237 and stalking him. 2) When the camera is following him then whatever was in front of the room is now following him. There's so many details with just the camera shots of this movie it's incredible.
Twins: Come play with us Danny Forever and ever and ever and ever Danny: Yes all work and no play makes Danny a dull boy *puts out a rocket launcher and shoots the twins*
Although the flashes of the murdered Grady twins could be the 80s equivalent of a jump scare given the suddenness of the image and the rise in Penderecki's music.
This movie came out when my younger brother (his name is Danny too!) was five years old. My two best friends were twin sisters that lived down the street. We had fun by having him drive his Big Wheel on the sidewalk and the twins would stand together blocking his way and in unison say to him "Hello, Danny. . .come play with us!" LOL!!!
Quentin Sandoval I mean the shinning was directed by Kubrick. And he was known to take hundreds of takes sometimes, so if they did do that (which they probably did), I wouldn’t be surprised.
I don’t think the twins are evil, actually quite the opposite. They don’t cause any harm to Danny and their words to him and the images they show him are a way of warning him of what’s to come if he doesn’t get out of there. Danny would be trapped in the hotel as a ghost, playing forever and ever and ever for eternity after being brutally murdered with an axe by his father. The twins gave Danny an edge and helped him avoid that same terrible fate that Delbert Grady gave to them.
the twins are the duality. duality is the state of separation between God and Man, the one outside the world and the one inside the world. by not transcending duality, God will not reconnect with Man. the being disociated for eternity.
In case anyone didn't know, "The Shining" is actually a power of reading minds and seeing the past, which allows Danny to see the past of the hotel. He sees the past of these girls, who have been killed by the axes. If he didn't possess "The Shining", he would never be able to guess that the twins were dead.
@PerrySport It is because those spirits in the hotel want to possess the power of shining from Dany to get powerful and destroy everyone. That is why they also corrupted his father's soul.
I just love an amazing tracking shot. Danny pedaling the Big Wheel around the hotel in the first sequence gave a sense of fun and exploration. And when it happens again, he comes upon the Twins in a dreadful and gory sequence. This is how you create horror.
Problem is today these snot nose teens think Sharknado is a good scary movie.I work with alot of teenagers and this new generation has no clue what going on.If its about computer games or a cell phone they know it all.
Everyone raved about Nicholson's performance, but Lloyd and Duvall produced some powerhouse stuff in this movie. Danny was 6-7 during the filming. His facial expression is pure terror. if this is what people want horror movies to be, then why not keep remaking friday the 13th, because its about as scary as this. hint hint, friday the 13th is not scary. OH SHIT, TWIN GIRLS APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE AND ARE TALKING IN SYNCH AND SLOWLY AND THEN A COUPLE OF DEAD PEOPLE FLASH IN AND OUT OF THE PICTURE, TIME TO SHIT MYSELF!"
I remember as a kid I was so thankful Tony was there to talk to Danny. As a kid, you understood imaginary friends and Tony was actually trying to calm Danny down when he reminds Danny what Mr. Haleren said about it not being real and just a recording in time. Such a deep and brilliant movie this masterpiece is.
Maddalonefarms agree. The remake was pretty pathetic, so we saw what happens when King gets to do it. jmo. I like his work a lot better when he's blasted.
I remember watching this the 1st time in 1982. I was 14, my sister was 12, and two of our friends stepped over that night. It was the 1st time we stayed alone, with out them coming home. We were all so scared, we all slept in the same room. To this day, when I'm alone in my house at night, it's still a little tuff to watch!!
"Come play with us, Danny. Forever and ever, and ever." Several minutes after this scene, Jack says to Danny: "I wish we could stay here forever, and ever, ever."
Shades Below yea, much more surreal and jarring with these types of cuts. i hate these cliche generic scare tactics a majority of horror movies use like corny jumpscares.
Shelly & danny really showed terrified facials expressions, and I really appreciated that. This scene was chilling especially dannys face i mean he looks horrified and disturbed, same with Shelley with the " here's johnny scene" they look very traumatize. Wow this movie is truly a masterpiece. Every actor was amazing, I can't see any other actors playing em. Hands downs a classic.
And the close up Angles of the camera with the dead bodies getting closer each time they’re say forever and ever and ever it’s nothing short of pure genius in my opinion too.
James the Red Engine (Thomas & Friends) encounters Dora Márquez (Dora the Explorer). Scarecrow Jr. (The OZ Kids) encounters Spot Splatter Splash (Lalaloopsy). Francine Frensky (Arthur) encounters Spot Splatter Splash (Lalaloopsy) and Dora Márquez (Dora the Explorer).
Yeah you don't need jump scares every five seconds. Honestly what scares me much more is psychological horror that messes your mind and makes you think
If you see the documentary of the making of 'the Shining' by Vivian Kubrick she uses two girls who come to the set with James Mason who are an exact fit for the O'Grady daughters. Very spooky.
@@Achilles94627 no. Actually, in the movie, they are just portrayed as sisters. In the beginning of the movie, when jack is appointed caretaker, the owner tells him that the sisters were ages 8 and 10, definitely not twins
What I love about the Shining is that it was not overly dramatized with jump scares. Yes, they put them in it as well as gore. But they let the eerie vibe of the snowstorm and haunted hotel do most of the harrowing work. Today's horror movies could never, ever compare. Kubrick was the greatest director of all time. Pure genius
The sight of the Grady sisters laying in the blood drenched hallway side by side. Has always, sent a cold shiver down my spine not only that but thats some scary stuff to see growing up.

if this is what people want horror movies to be, then why not keep remaking friday the 13th, because its about as scary as this. hint hint, friday the 13th is not scary. OH SHIT, TWIN GIRLS APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE AND ARE TALKING IN SYNCH AND SLOWLY AND THEN A COUPLE OF DEAD PEOPLE FLASH IN AND OUT OF THE PICTURE, TIME TO SHIT MYSELF!"
William Craig or a psycho just standing and smiling
William Craig agreed. All this crap they call horror is pathetic. And saw, not even a horror movie. Just horribly gross.
I subscribe
I remember as a kid I was so thankful Tony was there to talk to Danny. As a kid, you understood imaginary friends and Tony was actually trying to calm Danny down when he reminds Danny what Mr. Haleren said about it not being real and just a recording in time. Such a deep and brilliant movie this masterpiece is.

This movie has so many classic scenes
Gggggggggtggggggggggggggggggggggh
"Come play with us, Danny. Forever and ever, and ever." Several minutes after this scene, Jack says to Danny: "I wish we could stay here forever, and ever, ever."
You're right, I never noticed. There is so much in this movie that you don't notice until several viewings.

Hard to imagine anything creepier than this scene.
Japanese horror blows anything this American film tries to do out of the water. You want to be scared? Watch the og Grudge film or the Ring.
Are you serious?
@@mikasaackermann8736 I don't get scared from horror films I get scared from bugs 😂😂😂😂
The PREMISE of this scene is the creepiest I've ever seen in a Horror movie.
Mikasa Ackermann lmfao are you joking?
That finger's voice was the scariest thing in this clip
Fuckin weirdo
The use of Krzysztof Penderecki's music throughout the movie is absolutely genius
Well that sudden cut to them lying on the floor dead was unexpected
That makes it so much more creepy, than simply a flashback of it actually happening, which is what any other director might have done.
Shades Below yea, much more surreal and jarring with these types of cuts. i hate these cliche generic scare tactics a majority of horror movies use like corny jumpscares.
"that escalated quickly" was exactly what i said when i watched this late at night. Its not even a scary movie IMO, but thats just me

I saw this movie on New Year’s Eve with my cousins when I was eleven.
It made quite an impression. 😱😱😱
He is sooo adorable! What an awesome actor.
RIP Penderecki. Your music will continue to haunt me till the end of time.
And the close up Angles of the camera with the dead bodies getting closer each time they’re say forever and ever and ever it’s nothing short of pure genius in my opinion too.
I feel like AHS: Hotel is going to get a lot of their inspiration from this incomparable classic.
That's exactly what I was thinking!

Back when horror movies were actually scary and with an interesting plot instead being stupid and with bad acting and CGI
Yeah you don't need jump scares every five seconds. Honestly what scares me much more is psychological horror that messes your mind and makes you think
agree!
If you want a good plot, read the book.
Exactly! I have found one modern horror movie that was decent! It's called hush. It was a really strong plot with good acting. It's on Netlfix
your right they think jumpcares are the future They are not you need like creepy music and freaky scary voices in the background
I read that it is a misconception that the girls are twins; it is never actually stated that they are twins, just sisters!
Apparently twins give creepy vibes since they're in sync.
In the book they are not twins - they're a couple of years apart - but in the film they are. The actresses who played them are actually twins.
Kubrick used twinning a lot in The Shining. Think of the guy who trails Jack and Ullman in the hiring scene.
I'm in my 40's and to this day those 2 damn girls still creep the living hell outta me.

Pure genius
*Everything* about this movie was _perfect_- the actors, the plot, the characters... everything.

It’s be hilarious if he was just like

And the ghost girls are like
“Uhh we never expected to get this far”

The sight of the Grady sisters laying in the blood drenched hallway side by side. Has always, sent a cold shiver down my spine not only that but thats some scary stuff to see growing up.

Stanley Kubrick: didn’t want to use room 217 cause people will be scared to go in it.

Not a lot of horror scenes can scare me but when I saw The Shining this was one of the few horror scenes that actually frightened and effectively disturbed me.
The fact that the young kid accepted to play a role in such a horror movie is extremely praise worthy.
He didn't know he was in a horror movie, till he was a teenager. So the scene where the girls are bloody and on the floor, he wasn't there to see it. He believed it was a family drama, set in a hotel. He was never allowed on set either, when all of the "horror" was happening.
