So classic. The shots are so good. Showing the grandeur of this hotel. Man, did we used to build incredible places. Hotels now are just giant square boxes.
The manager showing them around is actor Barry Nelson who has the honour of being the first actor to ever play James Bond on any screen (it was a 1954 tv play of Casino Royale)
I love the '70s and early '80s interiors with the wooden wall paneling, simple electronic technology, and people wearing brown-colored clothing. It's an era where all worries with addictions to smartphones and social media were nonexistent, and consciousness was real life.
There is a kind of charm to that style for sure. I get nostalgic thinking about the wood trims of the wagoneers, the wall-paper and shag-carpeting, as well as the smoke filled cabins. Even the beloved Atari 2600 had a wood-trim version at one point!
In the Simpsons Groundskeeper Willie tells Bart you have the Sheening then Bart says ohh you mean the Shining then Willie says shh boy you wanna get sued!! LOL
The building itself, as a character. The tracking shots are made to show just how big it is.... very cool! But I always forget? It's a real hotel somewhere maybe California?
Very true the hotel itself is such a important part of the story. If I remember correctly the outsides shots were of a real hotel and the interior shots were filmed on a studio lot.
The Ahwanee Hotel in Yosemite National Park California. It's an expensive resort hotel. Kubrick based the interiors of the Overlook on the Ahwanee, but the whole set was built in Pinewood Studio in England. The exterior shots were shot by a second unit on location at Timberline Lodge. Mount Hood, Oregon.
There are many differences between the US version and UK and European versions of the Shining. The whole being shown the Gold Ballroom sequence is missing in the European version and I've seen it countless times.
One of my top 20 favorites of all time, despite it having very little to do with the book. Jack and Wendy horribly miscast. Other problems abounded. Nonetheless, blood pouring from the sides of the elevator doors remains one of the greatest, scary visual effects of all time. Love the entire ‘All Work and No Play’ sequence starting with Wendy’s panic over seeing what Jack’s been ‘writing’. Pretty clever to come up with all the variations
Jack nicholson is a very, very good actor...the shining and one fler over the cuckoos nest and Wolf and also Jimmy hoffa. And batman 1990. I,m a big jack nicholson fan please say that to jack. He was born 22 april 1937. ❤
I'm writing that The Shining will become available to stream on the streaming service MAX in September 2024. I'm hoping that MAX will keep The Shining on there for good because there's been times where MAX has made the bad decision to add this film and then they would remove it and take it away. they shouldn't have to do that because it's a Warner Bros. film anyway.
I had the 'shine' with a long-term Japanese girlfriend I once knew. Like I could often tell what she was thinking as if she was talking out loud. Interesting.
A ham-fisted director would have shown the kid throw 3 triple-6's. But as a 9 year old watching this, I thought having a hotel game room at your leisure for months on end would have been heaven on earth.
Jack Nicholson was wrong for this part. Kubrick was thinking of hiring Robert De Niro but changed his mind. Kubrick was wrong. De Niro would've been perfect. The choice of actors doesn't ruin the film for me. It's still a good film and it works despite having the wrong actors.
Also Robin Williams , Christopher Reeve were down as parts for the main Character , De Niro was not chosen due to his role in Taxi as people would think the role to simular , same as Jack from one flew over the cuckoo nest, but Jack such a great actor that he played the role to perfection tbh. Kubrick wanted him to slowly grow into a madman 😂

god help us
Tell me about it.
it was built on an ancient Indian burial ground, and was the setting of satanic rituals, witch burnings, and 5 John Denver Christmas specials.
That's odd the blood normally gets out on the second floor.
**shudders** “John Denver!”
One of the best horror flicks Shelly Duvall and Jack Nicholson great performance great cast😊

I'm impressed that Halloran knows exactly how many pounds of each kind of meat is stored in the freezer.
Scatman deserved a best supporting actor award for this.
Excellent selection of scenes. Fair play to you.

"very little to do with the book" and "Jack and Wendy horribly miscast." Not logic.
Whole movie is overrated. Not scary at all.
@@curcumin417That depends what you bring to it.

Three things you'll never see again in America in the rec room with Danny and the twins : Telephone booths, Cigarette machines, and ashtrays.

Could those two girls be the twins of the old caretaker' ???
Can you both drive a car? That’s fine.
Well, it helped her in the end driving that thing out of there and escaping crazy Jack 😃.
