1:07 you can use KeyLight (1.2) to remove the background layer color and all will be well. i already had the png so it was hard to replicate it / export it to SVG.
For those of you that wonder why their .AI file is pixelated when scaling them up (as Mike's layer at 0:24): Make sure to enable "Collapse Transformations / Continuously Rasterize". It is the second option (from left) right next to the layer name in the Timeline panel. You can also search RUclips for "Infinitely Scale Illustrator Files | After Effects Tutorial" It will save you tons of time and frustration! At least for me it did!
0:38 That because you need to pre-comp the png and add the effect on the pre-comp (because the layer of the png size is the size of the png image and if you pre-compose it, the size change to the pre-comp size which is by default the size of the composition)
Great Tutorial, but all I had to do to pin the edge is make sure my graphics touches the edge of the composition or artboard in illustrator and then hit Pin Left Edge and it worked. It also pinned the top and bottom corner to make both corners attached to the flag. Hope this helps somebody else. Literally makes doing this effect a 30-second process. This tutorial was exactly what I was looking for though. Thank you!
You have to grow the bounds of the png so that the edges don't get cut off by the bounds of the original image. Use grow bounds. You can also precompose but I suspect it'll take longer to calculate unless you crop it in and you have to deal with another precomp. Instead of tracking, you can pin the warp to one of the sides. It will still move a tiny bit (like really tiny), but it's realistic and saves having to track it. If you still want to track it, use stabilize motion instead (or change the track type after tracking), and apply it directly to the layer. :)
If you haven't already figured it out: The pinning applies to the edge of the composition, not the edge of the flag. So if you for example move the flag to the left edge of the comp you will see that it's pinned. Nice tutorial! Thank you!
hello, please help, i follow this step by step, but when i got to that tracking tool part, after i set up the tracker boxes and pressed the play button, the flag stops waving and keeps static... and i have no clue whats wrong with my tracker, thank you so much for this tutorial and please help. and its so wired that i can exactly see all the frames the tracker created for that motion layer but just on the screen it doesn't show any movement ...
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm having bad luck bringing in an illustrator file as it is cutting it off like the png. The illustrator file is all vector just a bunch of checkerboards. The only thing I would think would cause it would be the clipping mask but I can't turn it into a compound object in illustrator. Thoughts?
Hi guys , i am a complete novice to AE so i apologize if this sounds like a dumb question. I set up my composition to 10 seconds, when i apply this wave warp to a layer it only plays the duration of the loop and i cant get it to play throughout the entire length of my composition if that makes any sense. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Pretty cool effect (wave warp). What I did was scale my image down in my PSD file before importing it into AE. Another suggestion in relation to your tutorials to explain AE scripts like the loop Out coz a lot of guys don't know how to get in there and what they do. You can check my flag wave here i did a few months ago ruclips.net/video/AazZoF2cSOA/видео.html

Jerome Montpetit Thank you!
Great compliment sandwich Jerome :-D A useful tip too.

Thanks a lot for your helpful info.
You're welcome!
Grow bounds worked great! Saved me from resaving 30 *.PNGs!
Awesome!
Simply add transform effect on the PNG Picture and change scale parameter to 90% than add the wave warp effect
Hero!
THANK YOU. You are the first person who explained what to do if you want to reduce the wave speed at 4:32

Yeah :D It was an oversight that I knew about, but simply kept going. Sucks to lose your flow.
THANKS!! :) I knew it couldn't be that difficult
1:00 you can go on photoshop scale the image a bit down to let an alpha perimeter that the wave warp is gonna use to undo the cutting effect
Thank you.
0:48 All you have to do is to stretch the png corners.
Wow that parenting loophole was a great find! Thanks for sharing the knowledge with us!

you are the best!!!!
Thank you so much for your efforts!
Thanks for sharing this. It was exactly what I was looking for
loved it!thanks!!
AWESOME you nailed it

Nevermind I fixed it. I had to make the art board slightly bigger than the vector shape. Would be good to note that in description.
actually easiest way is to add a adjustment layer top of flag put into it wave warp then mask it
it takes max 30 sec
can you say that again but more detailed for beginner level please, like step 1:, step 2:, etc.
thanks .. very helpful and easy
perfect - thank you!
Cool Mike!.. You are awesome!
OMG, actually helpful!
fantastic tutorial youre amazing !
That's some dope stuff.
The parenting thing was really creative!
This is the best tutorial i have ever seen! Easy to understand, quick and functional. Thank you so much! :^)
is there any way to reverse the wave? like for example, layer a goes up the wave first and layer b goes down the wave.
Elegant and easy, as math laws! Nice!
Thank you !!! :)
Does it work if I use a cdr ou svg?
Thanks!!
why you didn't use the stabilize motion instead of using the track motion and do a lot of nulls.

how can I cut the background to insert the flag as a gif in a forum (without black or white background)? thanks
like a gif or ''png animated''(?)
actually, you can pre comp the png images with same setting main composition, not in size of the images
Dammm Loved That Technique ^^
precomposing the png and then applying the effects works :)
I know, I feel like a total noob after I watched this video when it after upload. Total oversight
Only if you collapse transformation!
I think you could have putten Motion Tile>Output Height & Width to 200 then it would work on the PNG
Why would you let the top left of the flag not move but the bottom left? A flag is attached to the pole on both edges, not just the top left. o.o
Muito foda, cara
Apliquei aqui em uns trabalhos

nice
there are WAY better ways to make a waving flag using displacement maps. this one is dismal.
The Motion Tracker doesn't work
Thank u¡¡¡¡¡¡
