I highly recommend this lens for portrait. After trying several budget lenses for my olympus EM5 II, this satisfied my need for portrait shots. You will not be disappointed.
Hi there! Great coverage and review! I have the G85 with 12-60mm kit. I am trying to decide between the 25mm f1.7 and this lens as my first prime. Which would you recommend? Also, are the videos shot handheld at 60fps 1080p? Thanks!
Of the 4 85mm eq. portrait lenses this is the one to shoot video on. The dual IS for Panasonic bodies means you can actually handhold this, which is big. The close focusing makes it also a great b roll detail option. Its insanely compact and light for what it can do. It is the most versatile lens of this focal length for mft.
Thanks for posting this review Mauro. I'm actually shocked to hear such a raving review about this lens from you. I've had it for over a year and use it with my GH4, and I think it's a good lens, but my footage def hasn't come out as strong as urs lol I'm sure some of that is due to the levels of color grading that you've done. Also, something that is HIGHLY irritating about it is that it "hunts" a LOT while I'm recording video. I do a lot of concert work and this is totally inconvenient while I'm recording artists who sing and dance, but the lens is constantly losing focus or trying to regain the focus. As of lately I've gotten the Sigma 18-35 and have almost exclusively used that, so I may revisit the Pana 42.5 after your review. Cheers!
hey Nasty...i am preatty sure that the Sigma 18-35 is a beast! But why not have a little 85mm equivalent that fits in your little pocket and use it sometimes. Thanks for the support ;-)
Hey, I also have a sigma art 18-35mm and use it on both my GH5 and GH4 with a speed booster and its great. I haven't tried the 42.5mm but having used a few native lumix lenses on both the GH5 and GH4 I have to say that the auto focus on both cameras aren't great, hence it hunting a lot during filming especially in darker environments. Filming with autofocus on these camera's is hit or miss. I recommend filming on manual focus settings at a higher f.stop to ensure better focusing and crank the ISO rather. Better to have a slightly grainer image to clean up in post then an out of focus one. And yes he's graded these images I think. Try shoot neutral on the camera profile and then crank up sharpness and colours in post. Look for colour LUT packs to get some great results in post.
Awesome review! How far do you have the camera away when speaking into the lens? I have the 14-42 but when shooting head talking videos it is to close and can not move it further away due to my desk and space.

Hello Mauro, thanks for all your amazing videos and tips which are really useful. I just bought a Panasonic GH5 and I would like you to recommend me the best lens for street videos mainly for filming architecture cityscape. I wanted a versatile clear crisp lens with autofocus and no edge distortion. I will really appreciate your feedback, and I thank you Mauro. Kind regards, Hussein
I'm very happy with mine too, great little lens for a relatively reasonable amount of money! Sharp from wide open, amazingly sharp for the price from f2.8 to f8.
It depends.. the 25mm is more versatile but the 42.5 give you a really fabolous look and for non intrusive wedding portrait videography is great. I use it a lot when i want a bigger separation from the background. (the Bokeh is fnatastic) You will be really satisfied if you go for it... I don't own the Samyang 50mm so i dont have my opinion but have in mind that 50mm in MFT is 100mm in FulFrame... almost tele-photo.
I do not own the 45mm from Olympus. They should have the same bokeh being almost the same focal range and aperture. The 42.5mm have 10 elements in 8 groups (1 Aspherical lens) vs 9 / 8 of the olympus. I will always favor the Lumix coz of the O.I.S. that works eaven better with the Internal 5 axies image stabilization of Lumix cams and the DFD focusing that works only for Native Lumix lenses on Lumix bodies
The 25mm is easy to work on. The 42.5 is a telephoto and you will not use it more than the 25mm. I first went for the 25mm but you will need both one day =) So you can't go wrong with any of them =)
Great review. I've looked on youtube for a few of these reviews and this is the best one. I was debating this lens vs the Olympus 45mm but Im now sold on the Panasonic after watching this. Only thing I would recommend is pop the f.stop in the bottom corner. Its just nice to know what the lens looks like at different stops in terms of blowing out the background.
What I haven't been able to find is how well this lens performs as a portrait lens for full-body portraits. How does the bokeh look when not zoomed right in on a subject? For a half-body or less, the bokeh is great, but I haven't found many examples of bokeh rendering with more of the subject in the photo that isn't looking down a street behind them or something else that falls away well with nearly any lens.
No idea if you are familiar with the Samyang 50mm 1.2. But I'm struggling between buying this lens or the Lumix 42mm here. Is the Lumix super sharp at all? I've noticed the 14-42mm focusing can be rather soft. Same price for either lens (used). Any thoughts?
Patrick, I don't have exact answers to your questions, but close answers. First off, since we are talking about MFT mount/sensor, I'll assume you are interested in the 42 for portrait-like work. If that is the case, the 50mm you are looking at may be a tad long. Remember that is a 100mm equivalent on a full frame cam. Granted, 80-105 is considered portrait range. Now, while I don't have the 50, I do have the 35mm 1.5 Rokonon, which is a re-branded Samyang. I have their cinema version, but not much different. Assuming that their 50 and 35 are similar quality (which is reasonable, however I have heard the 35 is supposedly better quality), I can tell you that at f 1.5, the image is semi-sh*t. BUT, at f2 it is quite nice, and by 2.8 it is very sharp. I have used the 35 for portrait, which is nice as it is a 70mm equivalent, and gives a big more breathing room around the image, which I like. Having said that, I am also in the market for this 42mm, which seems like it should be an ideal length. And as it is a Panasonic it works with autofocus, and is said to be sharp even wide open. I can tell you the 35mm gives fine background blur at f2 or 2.8. So 1.7 should be quite nice. BTW, sorry to hear the 14-42 is soft. I have the 12-60, which is rather good for a zoom, and just tends to soften up a bit on the longer end of the scale, over 40mm.
@@theportraitist4888 Many thanks for your response. It's a tough one of course and filled with subjectivity. I went with the Samyang. But if I fail I can resell at a similar price hopefully. Thanks for your detailed thoughts.
@@theportraitist4888 Just got the Samyang lens this morning and your previous synopsis appears to be correct. You do get acceptable sharpness at 1.2, but the sharpness is at its optimum around 2.8. I will say however that sharpness is evenly spread from centre to corners with virtually no vignetting on any setting down to 8. There is also light chromatics and fringing at 1.2 as well, but Lightroom is able to remove that successfully. I think I will only use the 1.2 - 2 stop in low light as a general rule. Hopefully getting a fast enough shutter speed to handhold for evening shots. But it does seem that the Lumix 42mm might be overall a better allrounder on faster apertures and of course all that lovely OIS and electronics for my G7. Oh and it seems my Samyang is the Cine version too.
@@PatrickChapmanuk Yes, I should have been a bit more clear about what I meant by it not looking good wide open. The focus is rather poor at the corners, but there is also a smeary haze across the image at 1.5. Again, most of which disappears by 2.0. I should also mention that looking at the lens again last night those are T-stops listed, rather than F-stops. FWIW. The other thing we should have addressed in this comparison is that the Rokinon/Samyangs are designed for full frame. And according to something I saw, I think from Tony Northrup, FF lenses on a crop actually loses some sharpness, along with light, obviously. I'd love to put a metabones on this and see. But feel the ~$600 that it would cost may just be better spent on new lenses. That $600+ would buy me the 42mm and the 25mm, and a nice dinner out for me and my girl. ;-)
Would you recommend the 42.5mm or the 25mm lens if I want to start doing 4k Product Videos, using Photo box with artificial lighting, it can be as small as CPU to as big as Router or Playstation 4? Or maybe one of the Zoom lenses like Olympus M.Zuiko digital ED 12-50mm 3.5-6.3 EZ ED MSC, it has Macro, power zoom and maybe it can workhorse to replace all lenses? Right now I have the small power zoom 12-42 panasonic lens, its OK but I want something more quality and better suited for Product photography.
I'm a beginner amateur photographer. Mine (new) just arrived. The AF is inaudible. But I always hear a short noise as soon as I move the camera. Only with activated stabilization. So my Panasonic H-HS043E makes stabilization noise. Is that normal ? Because the small shipping package was a bit crumpled and there was no paper inside. So it may be that it received small bumps during shipping....
Thank you Mauro ! Because of your review on this lens I bought it and with my Gh5s- it’s a criminal combo... Looks professional...! I’ll send some footage...V.O.W.

Thanks for the video. I believe that this is a good lens after reading a few good reviews, however pls allow me to give some feedback on your video. Your presentation of this lens is rather one sided - only on how good it is, no cons or limitations. That makes the clip sounds more like a sales pitch than a review. Should cover the weak points as well.
Should I get this lens or the Sigma 30m 1.4( equalivent to 70mm) I need a lens for portraits. I like to see the background more when shooting portraits.
Anyone own this and the Sigma 60mm? I am wondering if this is anywhere near as sharp as the Sigma. I am looking for a smaller alternative portrait in between the Sigma 60 and 30, but have been spoiled by Sigma's sharpness. I will compare in store, but that doesn't help for long distance and outdoor shooting, so I have made mistakes just that before. Bit concrned about the busy bokehbreports too but ghat is easily judged in store.
Sorry Chiang but i never used the Sigma 60mm so i don't really know how it performs. You can have a look on this video: ruclips.net/video/N0SvbYqTwTY/видео.html
MAURO'S FILMS thanks but I already have the Sigma. It is a phenomenon as is the 30mm f1.4. No Panasonic or Olympus lenses I have tried come close ($€£500 or less types). But I would like a nice small prime in between 30-60 and this seems to focus faster than the 45 1.8 and have OIS. I will be comparing them in a shop this week and will try to remember to return and leave an opinion. I used to love the 45 1.8 but it is miles behind the Sigmas for sharpness. As long as the 42.5 is a little sharper, the size, autofocus speed and OIS should still make it worthwhile. The Sigmas are just a bit too big on a GM5.

Yo la tengo para mi Lumix GX80 y estoy super contento! 😊
good to hear that... ;-)
Great review! Any noticeable difference between this one and 25mm 1.7?
Any difference between these two?
Thank you, Mauro for demonstrating the lens video capability...
Glad that you like it😉
is the auto focus of this lens better then olympus 45mm lens ? in video
I don't own the olympus but it should be better because of the DFD that Lumix cameras uses when used with native lenses.
Glad to hear that😉
Is this lens suitable for a Lumix GM1?
MFT mount? Than...Yes!
I use a Canon FDn 50mm f1.8 on my GX85 with a simple adapter. It smokes the 42.5. I sold mine.
GREAT VIDEO. DOSE THIS LENS WORK WITH THE GH5 ?
Thanks mate. Sure it will work with anya MFT cam... So you are fine with the GH5
MAURO'S FILMS the gh5 has build in stabilization. But the lens not. Will this affect my stabilization in video mode handheld walking ?
The IBIS does a great job itself.. You will be fine
Since this is a mft lens, isn't it equivalent to a 80mm FF lens? I thought that ~50mm was for portait (ie: 25mm in mft lens). Thank you
Yes equivalent to 85mm
@@MAUROSFILMS thanks Mauro ! So: is portrait usually 50mm, 80mm or anything between these 2 values? Thanks! (I am a rookie...)
@@jd5787 Usually i use 50mm FF for portraits
Excuseme, this lens cap how milli ?
Can I use this lens on my Lumix G7?
Yes
Your work is amazing! Nice video!
Thanks a lot.. ;-)
Is it true that this lens has no surface coating? I find it hard to believe any lens would be uncoated these days.
It does not have Nano Surface Coating. 😉
Ayyy, nice review man. Quite liked you sample shots and liked your detailed explanation too!. Oh and I'm going to be switching over to Panasonic M4/3 so if you've got good lens suggestions please give me a shout! Thanks Bro.
Glad that you liked. Well the Sigma 16mm is a Must. I would get the 8-18 for gimball work....
how does this compare to the sigma 30mm 1.4?
They are a completely different focal range. I would get both the Sigma 30mm F1.4 and the Lumix
When I use it for video. Why I can't get any autofocus. I am using Panasonic G7. Whenever I move the object far it does not autofocus and looks blurry. How should I make it work?
This lens i a little slower on Auotofocus. Put it on spot focus and turn the Focus sensitivity to High. It should help...
Hy I have Oly M5 mark II I need a cool portre objective... Which better? Zuiko 45mm f1.8 or Pana 42,5mm f1.7? or Sigma 56mm f1.4 but not own stabilizer...
The Sigma could be the best option but if you don't have O.I.S in your body..the 42.5mm F1.7 could be your answer
Great lens, the leica is too expensive, this one will work just fine
Yep.. i wanted to go for the nocticron but it's waaay too expenisve for my type of work...
Beautiful images and video.. Bravo
Thanks a lot
I have lumix g7 is what if I use it how does the quality looks like
It looks awesome
Thanks Mauro! This will be my next purchase after my recently bought 25mm 1.7
You are welcome.. You are following my path.. after my 25mm F1.7 i went for the 42.5mm F1.7. =)
Literally just about to the same thing, two great lenses for around £500 for both! Just brilliant
@@MAUROSFILMS what about sigma 60mm f2.8 instead of this 42.5mm? i have 25mm f1.7 and kit lens 12-32mm ...
@@ramzeslo2 The Sigma 60mm is a little too slow at 2.8. The 42.5mm is faster and have a better color rendering.
@@MAUROSFILMS what about dof comparing this two lenses i know sigma is slower but is 17.5mm longer is this enough to compensate this?
You shot this using a G85? Any tips for smooth 4k slomo using to G85
Yes.. I used 60Fps 1080p, shutter have to be double the framerate, than slow it down in premiere 40%.
But this video is 4k. This means you shot weddings in full HD and uploaded as 4k ?
Probably did because 4k video on youtube get almost 4x bitrate (40mbps) over 1080p (12 mbps).
Does this work for lumix g7
Dont you miss micro 4 3??
Never
@@MAUROSFILMS what's wrong wiht 4/3?
COOL review i wonder i this lens would work for groupal photos
Groupal?
@@MAUROSFILMS I dont how you call it in English but in spanish we call it "fotos grupales" probably that term doesnt exist in english persons gather together bring persons together in a group
Do I have to use this lens on e stabilization or not...? Because I use it on manual focus....there is a crop factor on e stabilization?
I always use the O.I.S of the lens with the 5 axies on the G85. It saves me the long lens jitter and not firm hands problem
Amazing footage!
Thanks a lot!
Great review! How did you achieve the shot at 0:33 of the moving car? Very well done
I was sitting in the trunk of another car (with the trunk open) while a third driver was trespassing wrong lanes to achieve the flow motion. Actually i had to stabilize it in post a little with 15% Warp.
MAURO'S FILMS Awesome thanks for the info!
Thanks mate
42.5 1.7 or 25 1.7 for video work?
Both of them. First get the 25mm coz of the widest more usable angle. Than for the tight shots go for the 42.5. B
@@MAUROSFILMS 25 mm does a great job but doesn't have image stabilization so I will think of using zhyiun crane M I am not confident on myself it my still shaking..
Great images
Thank you for the info well done video!
beautiful footage
Thanks
Which nd filter you used in daylight with this lens...?
Hoya variable ND
Will this lens work with the Panasonic G6?
For srue... It's a MFT native mount ;-)
Great video! Thanks. I need this lense. Evereybody says its amazing!
Thanks1 Yep.. it is... A really great beast!
could i use this for travel videography? my main for the Lumix GH5?
Thanks for the video. I believe that this is a good lens after reading a few good reviews, however pls allow me to give some feedback on your video. Your presentation of this lens is rather one sided - only on how good it is, no cons or limitations. That makes the clip sounds more like a sales pitch than a review. Should cover the weak points as well.
Should I get this lens or the Sigma 30m 1.4( equalivent to 70mm) I need a lens for portraits. I like to see the background more when shooting portraits.
Go for the Sigma 30mm F1.4 if you want more background than... ;-)
100% the Sigma, it is almost unbeatable. And is wide enough to also use for many other things.
I just placed a bid on this lens on eBay. It looks great, I hope I win!
Excellent choice.
MAURO'S FILMS I ended up winning (woohoo)! Now I'm trying to sell my 25mm f/1.7 lens as I don't really feel the need for both of them.
But wouldn't this equal like 84mm?? Wouldn't that be extremely narrow?
Yeha, around 85mm, good for portraits and detals :)
Yes.. equals to 85mm Full Frame. Yes it's a narrow portrait lens. In the description i mentioned this. It's a Portrait lens 😀😀
Would you recommend me this lens for cinematorgpafy?
Yes.. why not..it's a great lens
I second that.
Mauro koji bi ND filter preporučio za ovaj objektiv, hvala
Preporučio bih Varijabilni ND. Cijene stvarno variraju. Ja sam imo neki od 50$ (HAMA). Uglavnom odradi posao..
Cool review! 😎
Will the auto face focus on a gh2 work with this lens?
Thanks
Hey Margaret, i never used a GH2. I don't think that would be great! Even on the GH5 users struggle to have the Face focus....
@@MAUROSFILMS Thanks so much! I just bought a LUMIX G 42.5MM F1.7 an hour ago. Seems to work okay with the AFC setting..

42.5 or 14-140mm for street photography ? :)
could i use this for travel videography? my main for the Lumix GH5?
Thank you / Спасибо!

Honestly this lens for the price is cheapest moneymaker there is. I own it and have done better portraits than expected under right light conditions.
Yep...so true
2:27 "without any noticeable chromatic abberations" as a white shooting star flies into the screen
I believe that was a flash going off.
That isn't what chromatic aberration means.
