I feel like they’re kinda mean to starflight as well. Multiple times he tries to keep them safe (although they were), and everyone, with the slight exception of sunny, just shuts him out and snap at him. Further, at the end of glory’s book and in chapter ten of his book, everyone is convinced he’s a traitor, without even thinking. They don’t put any faith in him. Sunny is the only one who ever listens to him and trusts him. I believe starflight got so close to sunny because she’s treated similarly as him and he can only really relate to her. He’s even tried to stand up for her but everyone stamps him down because god forbid a “cowardly scrollworm” Nightwing from trying to defend someone. Tsunami is the one who treats starflight the worst, especially in book two. She cuts him off often when he’s speaking, and she doubts he has any sort of strength whatsoever. It did get much better at the end though. I’m sure there’s more to it but i don’t have the time or resources to make a video and write more about it (even though I’d love to). I could be biased since starflight is my favorite Dod :p
Starflight is my fav too but i think Sunny was the most toxic to him multiple times he spoke up about wanting to hear his idea and she'd just brush him aside the others actually listened even though they complained (and at that point it was kind of a joke between the DoD)

The other DoD not taking Sunny seriously and seeing her as naive is actually pretty normal in sibling relationships. The way they bicker always did seem pretty normal for siblings to me. Younger siblings a lot of time are treated as less intelligent by older ones. And a lot of the evidence shown in the video is more of an indicator that Sunny’s personality clashes with the others, the other DoD don’t have the same optimism and empathy. Yes, their relationship has some toxic elements, but part of that is that they’ve all spent so long together with so few other people to interact with. Me and my siblings are like this a lot, losing patience easily and lashing out over nothing at some times while being super close at others. And as a younger sibling, I am not surprised that Sunny felt like they wouldn’t take her as seriously when she’s the designated “little sister”
And I think the idea that Sunny is just wanting to gain the trust of others to exploit their weaknesses is too cynical for her character. Yes, she makes these relationships in part to help escape, she genuinely is an optimistic and emotionally intelligent person. Her character is about being able to stay positive even in hard situations., and how the other DoD needed to learn some of that too.
Yes, as an older sibling I completely confirm this. Plus, what about when Queen Scarlet tricked The DoD into thinking something happened to Glory? Tsunami was livid, even though she tried to look like she didn't care about Glory that much. Normal sibling relationship.
I agree too my sister used to choke me with pillow...once or twice she just pressed a pillow against my face....

As much as I want to say that this is for Glory, I would say this even more for Sunny, and I agree. I've always thought Sunny being mistreated just because she's "a snitch and never keeps secrets" accourding to book 1 in Clay's perspective.
Yes that was ONE TIME when they were like 3 HUMAN YEARS OLD. poor sunny.
I always felt, and still feel, like Tsunami belittled her the most. In The Brightest Night, even after hearing about Sunny's adventures, her stealing the Obsidian Mirror, getting away from Preyhunter, Fierceteeth, and Strongwings, getting away from Smolder, escaping from Burn's Stronghold, and deciding to find the Eye of Onyx, she *still* says "We weren't there to protect you."

I think it was just guilt because she felt bad not being able to help or be there for sunny, not much of “oh she couldn’t do it”
I mean, *I’d* feel horrible to know someone I loved went through so much danger and I wasn’t there to help or comfort them, but that’s just me.
She's kinda like that older sister who is mean to you but if you ever have a terrible nightmare she will let you cuddle up in her bed and if no one buys you the new toy she'll buy it herself.

Your right, but because I'm biased I'm gonna try and defend them. I'm also in denial.
Clay has never been the brightest, despite this he still tries to help like Sunny does, but often times his mind is sorta like infected and he's not the most outspoken dragon. It's been drilled into his mind that Sunny is a cute little sister but untrustworthy, but in book 1 it says something like "he felt bad that sunny couldn't know about their spying games," so he does acknowledge the tiniest bit on how she has to remain unaware of that. BUTTTTTTTT he still is there for Sunny as some sort of megaphone and will still join in on her ideas and admit when they're hers so she still gets credit. The others (taking away Starflight aswell) are the ones who ignore it.
Let's also not forget they were never taught what was right and wrong to say and think and how their behavior could affect each other. All of them were either mentally or physically abused (or even both) by their guardians, so it's unsurprising that they don't really realize how wrong this behavior is.
And starflight, Starflight listens to Sunny. Starflight respected and listened enough to develop a crush on her, and he's a smart dragon so this isn't for any stupid reason. He loves her like that BECAUSE Sunny is the way she is. In book 4 I recall him thinking "what would Sunny do?" or something along those lines because he knows she'd get herself out of that situation.
She looks to both Starflight and Clay because she trusts those 2 the most, as proven multiple times. Book 5 and book 10 are perfect examples. In book 10 she asks starflight and clay if she should give Qibli the braclets. Why? She trusts them the most. Why? Because those 2 listen the most.
I blame all their actions and behaviors (including Sunny's) on the guardians. Even Sunny has a bad side to her. But despite everything Sunny and the others still love each other, it's just hard for ANY of them to see each other for who they truly are.
They see Clay as a stupid but cuddly teddy bear. He's not stupid, just forgetful.
They see Tsunami as a violent dragonet always picking fights for fun. She does it to protect them.
They see Glory as a sarcastic (but not much more) rainwing. She is one of the most traumatized from the guardians and was taught to bottle up her emotions.
They see Starflight as a nerdy, scared, unhelpful at times dragon. He just doesn't have it in him to physically fight, but he's still helpful.
And finally, Sunny is the overly optimistic, not-really-a-sandwing-sandwing. But she's so much more then that, she still has feelings and friends and a brain that is NOT the size of a blueberry.
Again, I'm biased so I'll obviously point this stuff out.
But yeah your right and you pointed out most of the stuff that was wrong with the way they treated sunny.

I agree, most of the DoD treat sunny like shes some kind of baby, not able to think on her own. But I do think there is a case to be made with Starflight being better than the others. He respects her enough to have a crush on her, and admires her for her up-beat look on things. I might be mistaken, but I do think there are some parts book four were he thinks about what Sunny and what she would do. I could be missing a few things though, and he could just be as bad as the others lol.

In this case yeah, starflight really did see her value. But, please please please remember you can have a crush on someone without actually respecting who they are. There are a lot of creepers out there. And just because you often talk over someone, doesn’t mean they realize she’s trying to speak. Sometimes they do and shut her down directly , but most of the time (if I remember correctly) they have no idea she’s trying to speak. That doesn’t change the psychological effects of it, but I also feel like you shouldn’t be judged by something you don’t know you’re doing.

I feel like sunny’s relationship with the DoD’s is more like a realistic sibling relationship. I have siblings and I feel like that’s normal.
I relate to Sunny and Starflight. Sunny is always kinda pushed around by the people she’s familiar with, and gets ignored by them. It hurts. I understand her.

i do really feel bad for sunny but deep down inside she knew that they loved her so much. I don’t really think we can blame glory for this though only tsunami and sometimes clay. glory has been treated like a squashed bug her whole life (yes im exaggerating, it was only the first 6 years of her life) and yet only the dods care especially sunny, what makes sunny and glory fit together is that they are both the odd ones out, not treated normally and both royalty, (tsunami too just not about her right now) like i said earlier glory was treated like squashed bug for the first 6 years of her life, this counts for sunny too. Starflight really did care for sunny so not much to put about that.
but I really just think Tsunami is not as smart as she thinks so uhm she thinks sunnys ideas are bad and hers are good, clay just agrees with the first dragon that says somethings about it.

I f you don’t know how this feels, find a good friend or family and a regular social situation. Then ask that person to cut you off every time you start talking. No matter what for 5 minutes. I wondered about it one day and someone who wasn’t my friend took it upon himslef to show me. Its one of the most awful feelings. The fact that they did this so often, yeah it was probably kinda abuse. But I don’t think that makes the DOD bad.
I think that’s kind of the entire point of the first arc. They were always roaring over her, when she just had logical solutions. The entire point of the arc is that they need to become better, and it takes a lot to change. They were under the mountain for so long in abusive treatment all they knew was that if you roared loud enough you would get by, and if you told Sunny, you didn’t. Literally all of their books (exept clays) is about rejecting roaring and fighting and just think logically. Tsunami gets clay out of the cave by asking nicley, starflight uses flame as an excuse to get off the volcano because he can’t sneak out with his natural abilities. Glory had to learn and trust the rainwings to win the throne, and to protect the rainforest. When escaping the weirdling tower, Tsunami, clay and glory would have fought, and starflight would have ran, but by imploring Peril to end the battle (clay probably would have just fought by her side) Sunny saved the lives of sandwings on both sides of the fight with likley the same outcome.
The dragon world is cruel and abusive, and while the dod were already better than the rest of the world, they learned to be not-abusive by the end of sunny’s book.

My sister does this to me and our two younger sister is all the time. Treating the three of us like we are less capible bc we are blind. Or the are less intelligent or human because we aren't as popular or do the same things
It's also pretty much a basic age mindset somebody who's older an adult a parent an older sister only always assume anybody younger won't be as smart as them because they aren't as wise or whatever it's where adults get the phrase of listen to your elders and all that
Also I think Sonny's genuinely loving and isn't quite as manipulative you're making her out to be although that would be an interesting dark

Sunny often misses the point of a lot of serious topics, and the others have very justifiable reasons for thinking less of her. She can’t keep secrets so they can’t trust her to know about their escape plan, she often sees good in others when it downright isn’t there because she just doesn’t understand that some dragons are simply all-around bad and crave the suffering of others. She thinks she can just talk everyone out of the war because it’s wrong but the fact is that it’s way more complicated than that. She has one good idea or does one useful thing every blue moon, but the rest of the time she’s just full of bland optimism and wishful thinking.
Although from what I’ve seen, while Clay, Tsunami, and Glory treat Sunny like a child and rarely take her seriously, Starflight has always admired her spirit and tries to level with her. She just never notices how attentive he is.
Actually, this isn’t true. She has been focused on serious topics for most of the series, we just haven’t had many openings to see her this serious. Her ideas are never heard, bc she is ignored and no, they don’t have any justifiable reasons for thinking less of her. In this video 4rcane says it perfectly, getting the trust of her guardians and other dragons was a tactic to know their weaknesses, so she can gently exploit their weakness and escape dangerous situations. And when she did tell a secret, she was probably a toddler. But, don’t forget Moonwatcher trusted Sunny to know her secret of Mindreading and not any of the other dragons. Also, when the other DoD dragonets gave up on the Prophecy, because it wasn’t their job, SUNNY kept going to end the war, when the others turned their backs on it, which is the most serious topic and the whole plot of the first arch. Trying to see the goodness in others is actually a good trait to have, she does understand that some dragons are bad, but she chooses to find out the reason why they’re bad and that’s when she starts actually feeling bad for them. Most of the series we only seen her feel actually bad for her enemies, twice. Twice in her perspective when her enemies tell or have reasons for their bad acts. When she means, she wants everyone to talk about an end to the war, she means to end the war in a way with no violence and no death. She knows it’s way more complicated than just sitting and talking. That is why she worked hard to find a solution to have a more peaceful ending-hence the Eye Of Onyx. And actually, she doesn’t just have one good idea every blue moon, she is the reason the war ended. As we see in the video she has been seen strategizing in many instances where they were captured. She figured out the plans to get the Queens and everyone together, she had the idea to do blow darts on the Nightwings during the Rainwing and Nightwing war, it was her idea to steal the Obsidian Mirror and also form what it looked like in the books, it was her idea to start Jade Mountain Academy. Sunny isn’t just optimism and wishful thinking, she took after Thorn, we even see her in the book decide to be like Thorn and do something- rather than be like Stonemover and give up.
-Also, Starlight and Sunny can never be together as it goes against the whole theme of the arch-Family. It would be like brother marrying sister. (Which is why Fatespeaker was Included)
I totally agree with this- I’ve always thought that Sunny is never taken seriously by the other DoD and by the fandom too a lot.
Tbh the relationships the dragonets have is basically what me and my friends/me and my little bro have with each other. The youngest of my friends (Only like a month younger then me) gets treated like a little sibling cus she is the youngest. I also look over my little brother alot as well because thats just what you do.
It does feel like her going off on her own was the ONLY way for her to really shine and find her true potential. She’s really the best as soloist- who can make new teams on the fly.
you have some really good points here! i finished listening to Sunny's book on spotify not too long ago and it struck me as odd about how the DoD talked about her in the obsidian mirror! during the rest of the book i kept thinking about it over and over, but you also covered some things i did not think of as well!
Man, I always thought the DoD were rude to Sunny, but I never realized it was *that* bad. Seriously, it's concerning how much toxic stuff I don't even realize is toxic until later...
Other than that, grear video! I appreciate the reading out since I am one of the people who put videos on while drawing or playing, so it was really nice, and I would love to see it return! The only criticism I have ie that maybe you could do some retakes so your stuttering doesn't have to be in the video. Other than that, amazing work!
Sunny is on my favorite characters and throughout the brightest night I just feel so bad for her because then you just see that she's just bullied and pushed around by the other dragonetes of Destiny and that no one wants to listen to her whenever I read it it just makes me sad :(

I've always related to Sunny a lot. I have to shout an idea multiple times for only a slight chance my family will hear me, and half the time I have to tell someone else who they'll actually listen to my idea. As much as it sucks, it's not an uncommon family dynamic, and sadly some people will look at you being kind and positive and assume you to be stupid or weak.

I completely agree. I relate to Sunny a lot. I had a friend group of people my age who always belittled me and were condescending. When I left the group they didn’t even notice I was gone. They always laughed at my ideas, never treated me with any respect, and never listened to me. The best thing I ever did was leave those friends behind and find a new group who actually respect me. The DoD are one hundred percent behaving toxicly towards Sunny. That’s not to say they are toxic people, but they need to check their behavior and take steps to treat Sunny better. She isn’t their little sister, she isn’t stupid just because she’s positive, and she isn’t helpless just because she’s disabled (no tail barb). I really wished Tui made a better resolution but I applaud her ability to make so many characters that people can connect to so deeply.

I have a hole AU for this lol, basically the dragonets personalities are turned up to ten, tsunami is abusive, clay and starflight ignore sunny and glory is the only one who treats sunny kindly being another social outcast, the day moreroseer 'evaluates' them, he declared sunny and glory did not fit the prophecy, he tells the guardians to kill them, kestrel scars both of them, before webs steps up and says it be better if they threw them out than killing them, after being thrown out she spirals down a darker path, finding cash by assassination, she takes a bounty of Dune and kills him, she finds and tracks down moreroseer and kills him aswell
That's the basic plot, sorry if this isn't interesting, I have two parts on my channel

They do treat each other like siblings because they all do have that caring bond for each other, but this is like literally how siblings treat each other. Starflight and Sunny are like the youngest, no one sees them as something worth paying attention to typically and everything is THEIR fault. (This also happens with some of the oldest, but that is typically from parents.) Like how Starflight was immediately treated like a traitor EVEN after the capturing of a bunch of Rainwings. They are going to capture him. But he’s a nightwing, so he must be with Nightwings, which is something so cruel as Glory JUST was against her whole tribe’s I-don’t-care-about-some-captured-citizens thing Magnificent did. So glory was against her tribe, yet Starflight can’t be? Anyway no one pays attention to Sunny at all except Starflight. Clay will, and he is the oldest. Some older siblings take advantage of that rule, some use it to help their other siblings. Clay does the second one to listen, he typically listens to all of them. But not always. Tsunami and Glory just yell at them or dismiss them immediately, which is a downside to Glory. This becomes better after arc 1, as they all listen to each other at Jade Mountain, or usually at least. But yeah

Yall tryna excuse how they treat Sunny, yes, this could be considered normal sibling behavior, and telling her their secrets could be dangerous. But that doesnt make it fair or okay to Sunny. Sunny thought she had to do everything alone just to be seen by the other dragonets. She was kidnapped and they barely noticed.
I'm stuck in a house with 10 other people, 8 of them siblings so I can understand the bickering and misjudgment, its enough to drive you crazy. I misjudge and turn down a lot of they're ideas, because I underestimate my younger siblings. I'm number 4 and almost all of them are younger siblings the ages are sometimes quite random, 20, 18, 15, 13, 12, 10, 7, 4, and 2.
Update: in case some misunderstand, the ages are my siblings and I'm 13, so the 13 on my comment is me.

I'm writing one of those :D unfortunately my progress was deleted once so I kinda lost motivation -_-
I feel like if Sunny acted not her normal personality, the others would treat her differant, as she is very joyfull, so if she dident act the same way, or at LEAST a little LESS of her trying to make the others fight and insted "awakened" her abililty to make the others talk like in book 5 where they work out what they'll do to stop the war, they would treat her better. That's my opinion. Or if she had snapped sooner...
i feel like the order of arc 1’s povs are arranged by how much the other dragonets love them.
clay is their bigwings, he’s the cuddler. they all adore him.
tsunami’s ferocity and her soft spot for the dragonets is what makes her so loved, that and her protective nature.
Sunny and Clay love glory, Starflight’s okay with her, Tsunami… hm.
Starflight, everyone finds him annoying and boring except Sunny.
Sunny, she’s the little sister, everyone spites her, babies her, dismisses her actually really good ideas until someone else uses it, at which point it’s an amazing idea.

I love Sunny and her personality, I relate to her, I like her, and I get so annoyed at how everyone treats her. On several levels even.
I am one of those people who listen while drawing, and I did not think it was too long. I enjoy long videos.
I thought that the way they treated her was odd, and never understood why they acted like she was not capable if anything. I related to her character, so it was sad to see them talk about her like that (in the mirror conversation) and treat her as if she was younger, not as smart as them, etc. I had a similar experience, and I still often find it hard to share my ideas in groups.
The Ironic thing is that she could have had the same level of power as darkstalker
Imagine everyone underestimating Sunny when she has the nightwing powers and animus magic, but keeps it a secret. And she reveals her awesomeness near the end surprising everyone to save lives. I would read that book.

This is very interesting this changes how I see things but I have a video suggestion: Hailstorm and Pyrite character Analysis
Also in both the brightest night graphic novel and in the book(haven't read in a long while) Sunny does believe that they don't think of her as a team member and won't listen to her plans even not being noticed when she thinks of getting reinforcement. She goes though things like finding out herself that she's a hybrid of a nightwing and a lot of other stuff. Thats when they finally decide to take things seriously with sunny.
The DoD think of her as always happy and not that intelligent and think she would easily forget about the prophercy after a week.
Starlight is of course the only one that believes in Sunny and loves her even if she believes him as a brother figure.
One thing that I was screaming at during book 5 was, “YALL ARE DUMB!” It did a good job of portraying Sunny as an actual character instead of comic relief. *please note I was screaming at the other DODs*

Omg I always imaged Sunny having mental problems from her friends and is probably going to kill her self she is all alone in the world and she is the only one of her friends who isn't in a relationship or has someone who likes her (apart from starflight) I think she would have suicidal thoughts because of her friends

Not to be rude, but this is how every younger sibling gets treated, my mom and brother treat me JUST like sunny, just because there not always nice to each other doesn’t mean they don’t act like siblings, quite the opposite actually, siblings tend to be jerks to each other sometimes

Sibling rivalries can be something like little fights and bickers, sometimes teasing, but what Sunny (and myself) went through isn't.
Being treated lesser because of your age isn't a rivalry, if you are being constantly gaslighted and have to do so much just to be noticed, that isn't a rivalry, being ignored isn't a rivalry, having to use someone who cares about you, JUST TO TALK, that is not a rivalry, the bare minimum would be to at least listen, they don't even do that. The bar is set so low for siblings and somehow so many people can play limbo first try, and having boundaries or feelings, the whole stereotype sibling treatment isn't healthy, I couldn't stand Sunny's treatment throughout arc 1, because it didn't remind me of a sibling relationship, it isn't ok, it isn't a goofy little sibling rivalry, that is toxic. (again, i feel that Starflight and clay are pretty okayy with sunny, and the whole DoD's treatment i think improves over other arcs)
Anyway I'm glad i found this video, Sunny's character hits home. And of course this is just my opinion.
It kinda makes me sad when I see memes about sunny being so... naive and stuff. She’s really just overlooked.

Also, Starflight is weird for liking Sunny. Hear me out okay? Imagine you and your adopted sibling were born on the same day, you two grow up together. Even though they're adopted, you still see them as family. One day, you and your sibling are like, idk, talking or something, and all of a sudden they go "I love you" and confess their attraction towards you. Even though Sunny and Starflight aren't related at all, it's still really weird seeing as they literally hatched in the same nest together and call themselves brother and sister... I would just be as uncomfortable as Sunny was whenever Starflight confessed. I've tried talking about this issue with other WoF fans, but they pushed me aside and glazed over it and said "But they aren't related so it's okay", but it's not! It's really not okay, it's gross and weird, Starflight is weird.

ok but Sunny is also really toxic to Starflight she doesn't notice anything he does even when he verbally speaks out about wanting to hear her ideas Sunny pushes him aside and tells Clay instead I understand that she is supposed to be the adorable little sister but really she is rude and ignorant to Starflight she is also kind of stupid not noticing when Starflight had a crush on her when all the other dragonets (except Clay) noticed Glory even said in her book "oh Starflight maybe you should do something about that crush of yours" I completely agree with Peril's description of her "Sunny was a ray of sunshine the kind that made you want to shout stop being so happy the world is horrible" (that's not exact quote just from what I remember) she has the Clay loyalty to her friends but none of the redeeming "am I the right dragon" she even started off her book saying "Sunny had always known she was the right dragon for a big heroic destiny" so she has Clay loyalty and Tsunami's confidence but she's also constantly underestimated now sometimes those things can go together but in my experience all they do is make it harder to relate to Sunny she is way too positive when she should be mad overall she is just not a character i can relate to when i should be able to easily as another small constantly under estimated individual her confidence contrasts with her being underestimated, as someone who had been treated like nothing her whole life should be unconfident and disappointed in herself (i wont bring up nature vs nurture but neither of her parents were bright and happy and she wasn't raised in a happy place) she just seems really unrealistic

I feel like Sunny and Starflight kind of get treated simularly in the Dod. They're both kind of disregarded and not really taken all that seriously by the others. Like a few people said when Starflight got taken by the Nightwings, they immediately thought that he went to go warn them about what the Dod were planning. Rather than trusting in the fact that he wouldn't go to his tribe. Tsunami was definitely the worst to him though, she felt as if he was trying to take her spot and lead the Dod. When he really wasn't even trying to compete with her in any way. All this really shows why Starflight felt more of a special bond to Sunny since the others didn't really treat him with the same respect that she did. But I haven't read Arc 1 in a while so maybe I got a few things wrong, and Starflight is my favorite Dod anyways.

This is the reason why I don’t like glory
1.she acted liked she had the worst life ,like she acted her life was the worst ,if you have read the dragonet prophecy you probably have seen her act like “oh my life is so sad because the guardians treated me like crap”.
2.she made everyone believe the starflight was a traitor with out any thinking about it.
3.she and all of the other dragonets in the prophecy just assumed how the three sister would be and didn’t spend enough time to dig deep on the sisters (even though thorn is still better)

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if Sunny snapped, and honestly? I wish she did. I kinda wish she Atleast screamed at them for ignoring her because, well, I totally would. And I’d do it earlier than her. I would absolutely FREAK if my “ Friends “ or the dragons I had a “ Sibling like “ bond with ignored my idea to do something and when I made someone else say it for me they absolutely loved it. I would probably ignore them for awhile if that happened because I’d be SO MAD.

Okay, I know I am gonna get a lot of hate for this, but I dislike Glory a lot. She is such a pick me that says bad things about herself in order to get compliments. She rants about how she is not in the prophecy although everyone knows it. She seizes the throne of the RainWings without any knowledge of the tribe and their ways, then forces the peaceful RainWings to do several things that could get them killed. She dumps the RainWings as lazy although they try to be loyal to her. Honestly, she just annoys me so much.
