This is the only stretch of highway I've ever been on that just overwhelmed my spirit and brought me to tears with its beauty. I'm an east coast girl, living in Central Florida. See lots and lots of greens and blues in my daily life. But the reds and greys and tans of Utah were just phenomenal. I'm not super religious, but I'll be a liar if I didn't say that I felt the presence of God, the Creator, something greater than myself for sure, driving through those monuments. I mean, it was UGLY crying all the way through Spotted Wolf Canyon.
I've made many trips over the San Rafael Swell. Another feature of the swell and Utah in general is you can pass over this area at different times of the day like sunset and sunrise and it will look completely different, as are visits at different times of the year like winter. You get great effects with light and shadows. The drive never gets old.
I drove the stretch of I-70 through the San Rafael Swell in 1989 and recall it being a two lane freeway at the time. I was totally blown away by the beauty of the drive and could not imagine why the area was not a National Park or at least a National Monument. In any other state the area would be but Utah has so many unbelievably beautiful areas that it is just one of many. It is on my bucket list to drive this highway one more time. Maybe this year.
I drove this in July of 1984, upon the purchase of my 1972 VW Super-Beetle (which I still have!) out of Pasadena, CA, drove it home to southeast PA. (I calculated that, given the 15 second intervals between mile markers, your vehicle was traveling at 240 mph!) It was quite beautiful, hope to do this stretch again, thank you for this very cool video. I dig the music, great driving stuff. :)
That stretch of I-70 is #2 for me, right after Glenwood Canyon in Colorado. ScrewdUPClickV2 did an awesome video of that as well. Have driven both numerous times.
Thank you for sharing this! Years ago while on a cross-country drive from L.A. to Chicago we went through this stretch of highway which was so incredible I just couldn't believe it. I've tried to describe this area to others and never have been able to do so until now.
I pave part off I-70 exactly we're this video took place is so beautiful. And I'm proud to be part of this experience don't forget to stop in green river for some 🍉 looks like a desert but there's something sweet in September
I have driven this stretch of I-70 at least 3 times , both ways, and always enjoyed the views. BUT, its better watching your video because I can see more vs having to watch the very winding road. And, I did not know the area had/has a name. Thanks!
Hope they don't. It makes that stretch that much more beautiful and remote without the addition of man-made structures. Obviously it's up to the driver to make sure they have more than 108 miles of gas left in their tanks before crossing this amazing stretch of land. And I'm sure that person would charge a fortune per gallon of gas to make his mega bucks.
Well when my daughter and I were driving to the Oregon coast she did not want to go this way because of the remoteness of it. She said she didn't want to drive 109 miles of nothing. And yes I know what you're saying, what one little place would be swallowed up in that big expanse. I didn't see your comment until now 3 years later. I was just looking for this video again because of something else I was listening to.
The longest stretch of interstate with NO services...That's where my fuel pump started acting up. I ended up limping it all the way home at 55-60 mph - 1400 miles. Other than that, I love this place. It's like driving on another planet. Great video.
I drove East bound summer of 2019 transporting a car to Pennsylvania and had NO IDEA what was in UT! I was GOING NUTS as I drove through this OtherWorliness! The "Bow Shot" of Black Dragon from I70 was insane. I70 is like an AMUSEMENT PARK RIDE through UT - like some WORLD'S FAIR DIARAMA. The outfit that laid out I70 should get some kind of award - Nobel Peace Prize maybe. I would highly suggest if you've never been there, NO VIDEO OR PICS CAN PREPARE YOU! VR Goggles might do it though. Get a cheap flight to Las Vegas, Drive I15 to I70, drive to Colorado, turn around, and drive back to Vegas. Best bang for the buck. NOTE: I70 in CO is all potholes and in terrible condition the entire length of the state.
Awesome video! I'll be driving this next summer as I drive from Sacramento to Vegas to Denver to Des Moines to Cleveland! This highway is on my planned route! I understand there is a stretch where there isn't any place to stop for about 100 miles??
good video I love the scenery and music.. Awsome breath taking... keep,em coming, i have lots of footage but my computer is down and I'm relocating.. :( but hey relocation means more footage.. :)
We have explored the back country both N &S of 70. South you can enter at Goblin Park and drive dry wash Red's Canyon to Uranium mine Tomsich Butte. North you can drive the Little Grand Canyon in a car and see many pictographs and see dinosaur tracks.
I had to go from Ohio (where I live) to California about a month ago and believe me it was one of the best and worst experience. best because I got to see the beautiful rocky mountains driving through I-70 and worst because by the time I got to Utah it was night and snowing (like alot) so I couldn't see anything, just the snow blowing on the car.
The video doesn't show the steepness of the descent. The 2 runaway truck ramps (1:42 and 2:21) aren't there for nothing. Did this ride with a loaded rental truck (box on van chassis, car on tow dolly behind), and nearly lost it on that steep patch by the second ramp. As I've since learned, more experienced car towers take the car off and drive separately for those stretches. At the very least, whenever you see a 6% or 7% grade sign, downshift into low, if you're driving heavy.
aahhhh... I remember passing through that. except it was at night and it was snowing shitless. damnit, I wanted to pass by day but not. oh well, this summer I have to choose between Colorado or Utah.
You're not smart, are you? Just imagine what the outcome would be if your pissing and one truck just has a real emergency and it has to use the runway! Think smart, specially on the freeways.
Really liked the video. I used to be stationed at Hill AFB and made that trek many times (Home was Denver). One suggestion" Pick different music - that was just annoying.
If you tried to build this stretch of highway today the enviros would have a collective psychotic meltdown. They'd try to have it designated wilderness, so that that the people who own it - the American people - would never get to see it. Instead, this highway brings a phenomenal piece of geology into view of millions of people to appreciate and experience.
A good portion of this was part of the LAST segments of I-70 to be built, and a lot of environmental studies were done to engineer it. It crosses Utah immediately to the north of Capitol Reef National Monument, and many of the side roads lead to tribal land, wilderness trailheads, and the like. The engineers who planned this road threaded the needle expertly.

Amazing that such a scenic drive is possible to find on an Interstate. Makes you really appreciate this country we live in.
This road is definitely on my bucket list
Was just through there in October 2020, very remote and very beautiful "high desert" landscapes. Breathtaking!!
OMG!!!!! That was breathe taking!!!! What a view!!!! Thanks for sharing!!
Love it! Drove through with my sister a few years ago on a cross country trip. Took our breath away.
Great job...stunning scenery, something I'll have to experience for myself one day!
One of the most incredible places I have ever seen. In our journey, we found a beautiful day like in the video
I have forgotten how beautiful that part of Utah looks! :)
I've made many trips over the San Rafael Swell. Defintiely a must drive, this remote wonderland is just amazing! Thanks for the video!

Unbelievable ! Some screens looks like a computer simulation of expansion to another planet :D Thanks for this great ride.

Wow...this area is very neat!! The runaway truck ramp gets you thinking. 4:30 is very pretty.
Its crazy to see this as a child and I'm still amazed everytime I pass by it.
Great video, loved seeing both directions and the different perspectives they offer! 5*****
Thank you for sharing this! Years ago while on a cross-country drive from L.A. to Chicago we went through this stretch of highway which was so incredible I just couldn't believe it. I've tried to describe this area to others and never have been able to do so until now.
The finest stretch of Eisenhower's Highway Vision!

Amazing, as always :-) I felt just like I was there.
The quality of the video (filming and editing) is astonishing!
LOVE your vids! Can you imagine if someone were to make a service station or restaurant half way through?? They'd make mega bucks!

This is one of the most awesome stretches of freeway scenery anywhere. It's definitely among my favorites. Thanks to Screwdupclick for this.

Mars
Great video, landscapes are amazing ! I wish I could drive there ! ;)
Thanks for the ride man we drove this about 2 months ago thanks for the memory...
Saw this coming from Moab, no service up to Capitol Reef, nice video. I got so hungry during the trip.
It's so interesting how different Interstate 70 looks from Maryland to Utah
Beautiful scenery. Reminds me of my holidays in 2005

Spetacular views! Thanks for the ride...
Just amazing, you are so lucky to see such places!
Fantastic! This is an upgrade over the video I posted awhile back, and you also got it in the westbound direction. I'll put this on my favorites list.
Great scenery, thanks.
Thank gosh for the mute button though.
Very nice! love the vids from my home state. the music perfectly fits the landscape.

That was the longest and steepest 100 miles I've driven. We took that interstate back to Las Vegas from St. Louis early this month.

ANOTHER TRIUMPH !
This looks MUCH better in High Definition

grizzlygrizzle cumpleaños
Great footage, I got a question though. Are these business trips?
THIS IS ON MY LIST OF PLACES TO GO.
Great!
aahhhh... I remember passing through that. except it was at night and it was snowing shitless. damnit, I wanted to pass by day but not. oh well, this summer I have to choose between Colorado or Utah.
Drove it this past July
July? Ouch!!! Hot as hell I bet.
Sound much better with my pipes, amazing ride.....
I got on one of those runaway ramps with my Subaru once just to take a piss and take some pictures.
Is it legal to use those ramps unless it is emergency?
Taha Korkmaz
heck no it's not, but I had an emergency. I had to piss and I used that as an excuse.
You're not smart, are you? Just imagine what the outcome would be if your pissing and one truck just has a real emergency and it has to use the runway! Think smart, specially on the freeways.
So you would keep driving and piss your self?
i second that...
@ScrewdUPClickV2 Sorry if I wasnt even jizzing on my pants for that, but it was nice though lol ahah
i drove this but couldn’t see anything because it was dark ;(
So there I was
6 hours to las vegas.
the music makes it un watchable for me.....
Really liked the video. I used to be stationed at Hill AFB and made that trek many times (Home was Denver). One suggestion" Pick different music - that was just annoying.

Cool video, but couldn't you have used some better music? Maybe some Neil Young? This gay techno shit ruins it for me.
