      @@heinokunzelmann8967 Well the point of that video is that you don't just do Set Rotation because other games have it. You use it to wildly experiment because mistakes will go away on their own. "Try something crazy or even something foolish" were my words, I think.
      I agree that Yugioh has been completely devoured by its own Power Creep, so I love the idea of GOAT and Edison and the current 2025 Life format on Master Duel. I agree it needs a proper shakeup, but I wouldn't use the words "Set Rotation", because we are well beyond that threshold.

    i love how half the episode is setting up the expectations of the review lol.
    trying to cram 25 years of the card game into a mishmash of a deck was incredibly dumb lol, the funny thing is that this outdated view of teaching the game came alongside japan's new Trial Decks which finally understood to use some basic archetypes with normal ratios so you can replay on your own without following a scripted tutorial was the best way to intro people into the game...they even implemented the decks into master duel for free!, chef kiss.
    also, the complexity of the cards is not that much of an issue if the deck works as intended. there is nothing as frustrating as having a hand full of unplayable cards and nothing to do.

    • @toonorochi
      @toonorochi 2 дня назад +4

      In a way the episode structure can be an example of the flow a good tutorial game must have informative and exciting while slowly building to the best part

    • @KuroeNezumi
      @KuroeNezumi День назад +1

      One little thing that unfortunately isn't true: the decks weren't implemented for "free" per se, as in they're readily available and can be accessed at any point AS an entry point for the competitive game.
      Instead, people WERE (past tense, it already stopped being the case) allowed to borrow any of the three Tactical Try decks for...I want to say unlimited amount of time, but somehow I remember there was a rank limitation to where you could play it while on the ranked ladder? While not being provided later on inside of the store.
      Giving some clarity in case people go to Master Duel with expectations of still being able to use them.

    • @Badbufon
      @Badbufon День назад

      @@KuroeNezumi the decks were available for free. that's the only thing that matters.
      because if it is for a rank cap, 1- a new player will hardly rank up that much, 2- by the time they have the skill to rank up, they might have switched to a better constructed deck regardless.
      and it will be cool if the decks were still available but that's also beyond the scope of the product tie in.
      Try Decks aren't perfect, but compared to old structure decks and the abysmal 2-player starter set, they were amazing.

  • @Schwig
    @Schwig День назад +7

    The worst part of this set is that it could have been EXCELLENT nostalgia bait. Dark Magician is an Xyz deck and Blue-Eyes is a Synchro deck with both having Fusion and Ritual support. Give Blue-Eyes a couple Dragon Link cards and Dark Magician a couple of Endymion Pendulums and you cover all the summoning mechanics.
    That's ignoring all the other protagonists and rivals that could build up multiple versions of the product for variety. If they can write the Voice Actor duel events for the bigger tournaments, they can make a tutorial product fun.

  • @darkmooncross6342
    @darkmooncross6342 2 дня назад +15

    By the way, there's a set in the OCG (Japanese format) that has a product called the "Tactical Try" decks. These decks are structure decks focusing on fan-favorites that are competitively viable: Cyber Dragon, Live Twin and Eldlich. They have powerful staples and are pretty damn well optimized for those decks.
    This is what the TCG gets. A sorry excuse for a starter deck..

  • @ethanmalone7263
    @ethanmalone7263 2 дня назад +15

    Honestly I find there to be an interesting implication with the set coming with no playmats in the box or the instructions. It gives off the feeling that Yugioh is a game you can play anywhere and everywhere, there are no extra things you have to set up, you can just walk up anywhere with a friend and duel.
    Although the playmat was definitely cut to save money, and the set would be unarguably better with a playmat in every way.

    A bad beginner box has the same feeling to me as video games that have little to no tutorials. The kind where the only way to know what you are doing is to have already played the game before. It really makes you feel like the designers of the game don't want you to play their game, almost like they made these starter boxes because they had to and not because they wanted to. It's weird how often I see game companies (physical and digital) neglect the new player experience or treat it as not worth putting effort into.

    Ah yes ryu ran, so bad and yet, it still managed to see actual meta play in ocg. I m not joking.
    Context : Due to how dragon (mainly tenpai, but also lot of boss monster like borreload savage dragon) and the fire attribute in general (mainly snake-eyes but also fire king, rescue-ace and even salamangreat) were meta relevant deck and ryu ran happen just happen to be both of those on to of being the strongest normal monsters with those stats.
    Basically the primite cards made it so you have access to amazing disruption.
    Bonus point for people who were running fiendsmith metalmorph and using max metalmorph on ryu ran to summon red-eyes black fullmetal
    Basically, carefull about which specific normal monster you make fun of.
    At some point, dokuroyaiba s price spiked in japan due to how the fire attribute and fiend type were the current decks to beat (too bad it didn't see play because there wasn't a good enough strategy to justify playing a primite around that time)
    Oh yeah, come to think, launch spider is the strongest normal fire machine currently so maybe it will come handy one day.

    If they were trying to teach Synchro & XYZ, then they should have used Stardust Dragon Number 39: Utopia, respectively. They were the ace monsters of the protagonists for their respective series. I remember reading that the idea of this tutorial was to give the players a gradual build up on the complexity of gamestates, starting with vanillas and introducing more complex cards as it went along. I like the idea, because it feels better than simply forcing new players to jump into modern yugioh, but it REALLY didnt need so many turns playing with the vanillas, just a couple of turns where player A normals a guy and then tributes it for a tribute summon the following turn would probably do the trick

    It’s really pathetic how consistently Konami appears to do the minimum effort time after time. No real prizes then moving the needle an inch in the right direction changing 8 yro switches for steam decks, recognizing the existence of alternate formats then to not elaborate on almost any aspect of them. Etc. idk. Especially on how aggressive the competition is around them, I can’t comprehend how they can continue to be so shallow on every aspect of their player maintenance and hype.

      @DOBLE2CALIBeR 2 дня назад +6

      I had the same perspective but I think about it like this:
      Competitive ygo players don't need a legitimately good reason to play and win outside of them just wanting to. The games are brutal and so are the prices and pull rates.
      Ygo players are so competitive at the game that they tolerate everything that makes it horrible. They absolutely LOVE the game. All they need is the bragging rights to motivate them to play

  • @Zetact_
    @Zetact_ 2 дня назад +5

    One of the most ridiculous things about the deck is that there isn't even an ATTEMPT at synergy with the construction. You can't even say what the decks are other than "One has Tuners so it's a Synchro deck, and one has Xyz monsters so it's an Xyz deck."
    Back when Yugioh did paired deck products you'd see a clear theme of, like "Fire vs. Water" or "Zombies vs. Dragons" and you could use that to inform your decision. The 2-player starter set is just, "Uh, which boss monster vibes with you more?"

    • @Zetact_
      @Zetact_ День назад +2

      @dudono1744 Well I think the point of the deck they wanted to do was to have a few different ranks but even then they could have done a Shark deck since that archetype was meant to hit 3 through 5 and has enough old cards that you can have synergy while remaining simple enough for a new player (cards like Silent Angler, Shark Stickers, Panther Shark/Eagle Shark, Sirenorca, etc.)
      A Shark deck would even let you include the mandatory vanilla as Megalosmasher X as an in-theme one, and have the intro book point out, "Level 4 and lower monsters almost never surpass 2000 ATK."

    As a veteran yu-gi-oh fan and player, I'm surprised that's what the two player starter deck is. I'm not surprised by how stingy it is, but because even Konami got us used to better than that. The playmate would have been easy and cheap to add, the decks should have been way better (especially compared to modern structure decks), and I agree you can get snappier with the tutorial guide even with basic stuff. I'm not surprised about the tokens since it's hard to get any lol! I know it's hard to teach yu-gi-oh in its entirety (since I often do for kids at locals) but they could have done better for even a fraction of the game's mechanics! Even late 2000s structure decks has better explanations in them, and the boxes were better thanks to the plastic insert!

      @Kohdok I'm still waiting on Photon Token reprints :/ There are tons of improvements and/or products that Konami could make but actively sleep on! The lack of an animé supporting the card game (beyond Rush Duel that nobody plays) is one of the big factors of the lack of new players. The rarity collections stuff were nice products that help any player get good stuff for a decent price (even for booster boxes) but that's as far as they'll go. They really use the pull-and-push model too much. Pulling the quality as low as they can before people get angry enough for them to push good stuff out

    I feel that a way for a potential yugioh starter set to reduce the immediate information overload that is the modern game it to take a page out of legacy games.
    Imagine a set that started with two half decks built with fairly simple effects like what starter decks used to have. After one game, the loser would be able to look through a series of sealed packs for their specific deck, each with a new boss monster on the front, which would contain a few new cards to power up their deck and a few cards explaining some simple combos with the cards they currently have. This would slow the introduction of game mechanics and combo complexity to slowly frog boil newbies as to what the game is like, but also allow experienced players to simply rip open all the packs and get reasonably powerful decks

    Here is how i would make a yugioh starter deck:
    1. All the cards are simple but interesting.
    2. Each deck has a coherent theme that can be built around.
    3. Fusion, Ritual, Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum, and Link monsters and cards related to them would be relegated to bonuses that you can add to your deck after you get the hang of the main flow of the game, with their rules being part of an 'advanced technique' section.

    • @shay4232
      @shay4232 2 дня назад +1

      honestly the best decks to build around those are actually dark magician and blue eyes. Dark magician now can easily do link, rit, and fusion plays as the blue eyes are synchro, xyz, and also links since pends are a weird and barely have a function now outside of hey i just use this as a monster fusion spell

    • @shay4232
      @shay4232 2 дня назад

      Mostly elaborating. We got magician of chaos for rituals and we can fit in some decent rank 8's for blue eyes that aren't expensive but also worth the money. I'd personally do titanic galaxy dragon. But the fusions and synchros are going to be the main focus for blue eyes and dark magician.

    The one thing that ruins that is the recursion of Eldlich. That thing can keep coming back as a 3500 body (back to 2500 after the turn it's summoned via its effect) which is really hard for the opposing deck to deal with.

    I think the yugioh 2 player set may impruve if konami implement some of these changes:
    1: make the 2 decks based on archetypes most of current yugioh decks are build around one or 2 archetypes so teaching about how archetypes work is important and also it will make the card selection of each deack a bit better by default
    2: have clear characters as the base of the tutorial scenario for example what if the tutorial decks are supposed to be a sponsored stream of the live twins and one player is lil la and the other is ki sikil or having the tour guide of the underworld as your teacher who don't know how to lay that well herself that way you can also put some popular cards in the front of the box alongside the "boss" mosters of the decks
    3: have a little extra selection of extra deck cards (and rutual) that can be added to both decks to encourage the players to learn about the other monster card types maybe have those cards be a random selection of 10 cards that come in a pre arranged pack but make 4 or 5 different packs so the players have some exciment because not always you get the same cards

    • @dudono1744

      I would have the Synchro deck be based on an archetype and the Xyz deck just be Rank X spam. I would also include cards with effects that can't be used within the deck, for example using Gold Pride - Leon as a Tuner that SS itself, but you don't use other Gold Prides so the other effects do nothing.

    Yugioh is basically incompetent when it comes to getting new players. The game is too complicated, too expensive, the culture is really hostile, players moving from casual to serious is a huge culture shock, and Konami refuses to make high-quality complete starter sets or introductory events.

    Outside the scope of reviewing starter kits, but from another channel I saw someone bemoaning the lack of intermediate products for Yu-Gi-Oh too. The lackluster learn to play kit, then nothing but straight on in to packs for competitive play.
    I know nothing about Yu-Gi-Oh, I never even watched more than ten minutes of the anime, but sounds like they didn't even include retired-classic cards like MtG's Serra Angel or Shivan Dragon. Things that can be good in low power decks and trigger nostalgia for the person teaching you, but thanks to power creep are essentially draft chaff nowadays.

    I think you underestimate how confusing these games can be for the uninitiated. It's very slow yes, but it has to be. The one change I think would've made the product miles better is to have full, interesting extra decks so that new players can play again and again to test out. In the end, I think this set is ok for an old player to introduce a newbie to the game, rather than for two new players to start.

    Disagree on "no major mistakes". Using D.D. Crow on Skill Successor rather than on Eldlich (which can come back from the graveyard every turn and keep hitting like a truck) is just as dumb as not evolving your Pokemon. Alternatively you could also use it on the target of Call of the Haunted! Or on the target of Daigusto Emeral! That would STILL be a good play if you don't know about Eldlich, as it would teach the player about interrupting their opponent at the right moment! Skill Survivor is just the WORST possible choice here!!
    It also make the game once the tutorial is over (after they made one of the players shuffle) really biased towards the person with the Eldlich, as their draw don't matter, they can keep discarding spell/traps to bring back the Eldlich over and over, and are bound to win this. Why do all these guides teach bad plays to new players? What's the point in forcing them into, not even the worse play among two, but the worse play among three possible ones?

    Its telling that I learned more about DM playing master duel, picking up one themed pack (the live*evil twin set) and a couple of relatively cheap structure decks (3*Blue Eyes MAX, Ditto another BE Archtype and one of the BM/BMG ones) and throwing myself relatively brainlessly at online ranked play, in about a week, than I ever did playing the game in meatspace of the game's 25 year history.
    Its anazing, the online client is the best in the business. I am not touching MTG* if I can get away with it and Pokemon's client(s) are completely sexless in terms of presentation. Somehow, a gameboy game coming up to 30 years their senior roundly outclasses them.
    If I said anything that positive of DM TGC without mentioning master duel, I'd be considered ether a loony or trying to region skip to DM OCG which seems to be- if only slightly- less of a racketering exercise and the format I'd go for *collecting* the cards from a "Fun to look at" perspective.
    * I will buy whatever FF cards look good second hand providing Hasbro doesn't do something majorly stupid and, say, sells up to Sparky Boom Boom Truck Man in the six months it's gonna take to get FF in a worse TCG and card stock- sidebar, have you *felt* FF Cards? Perfectly flat floor compared to everything else in the business, we are lambs to the cosmic slaughter!

    I’d say you are kinda hating on the Pokémon battle stadium a little to much imo. It’s mainly tailored to families/young children while the ex battle decks are better if your trying to teach someone older. The Pokémon battle league succeeds in providing a self-contained board game like experience to make the game simpler to children. So I think it’s lack of poison/burn counters is ok and the lack of pkmn with abilities is ok for teach younger people the rules/basics.
    I’d also say the tutorial isn’t the worst out there, where it introduced a mechanic while progressing the game. This retreat thing might only be in the Pikachu deck and not the most current iteration

They feature a simplified format, draw heavily on the anime characters and card pool and feature 8 different decks that are fairly evenly matched. If they came with 1 tutorial fight alongside the full rules in a separate booklet, a die and a lifepad, they'd tick all of your boxes.

    While I understand your point, I think YGO needs to stop using the same two shitty monsters everyone recognizes and start using other monsters from the 25 years of cards. It's a shame to have so many archetypes with fully developed lore and recognizable characters but they keep farming the same old shitty monsters. Hopefully the new animations will help change that. Public perception needs to shift out of BEWD and DM.
