    Joanna Gaines gets a bad rap because of the fact she basically invented the modern farmhouse aesthetic that feels way overdone at this point but that’s what she was doing ten years ago. Her style has definitely evolved!

      I agree, we act like designers can’t change their style just like us. The fact is that she made a huge influence with the modern farm house style….try doing that? Not easy

    • @tikusblue
      @tikusblue 11 месяцев назад +9

      The whole reason that style caught on so much was because it felt fresh yet classic, and because it was very functional. Obviously like anything that becomes immensely popular it becomes played out eventually and people get sick of it. Joanna was always a talented interior designer imo.

    I used to live in Waco. You can see the castle while driving from a busy but average city roadway. Everyone in Waco knows the castle. So it was a great thing that they took it on and fixed it up rather than letting it just sit and decay. Chip & Joanna do a lot for Waco, & Magnolia marketplace is fun to visit. Their fame helped revive Waco, a wonderful city, from its unfortunate past and people appreciate them and their businesses. I never met/saw them but lived about 15 min from them. Maybe someday I’ll move back there, if the opportunity comes up I would.

    You can see Joanna’s style start to pivot in the later seasons of fixer upper. People’s styles and taste change over time, but this restoration has now completely convinced me that the Gaines are not totally bought into the modern farmhouse aesthetic and that they only peddle it so hard because it is the easiest to market and merchandise. It’s smart business, but that just makes the aesthetic feel all the more soulless.

      If you read her latest book she talks about this. She said each house has a style, like her house is very much farmhouse but she dislikes that the show fixer upper has deemed her as farmhouse style. That she loves all styles and sometimes its hard to have people put her in this box. When it comes to her line at target it really all comes down to trends and money. Shes also not the only one making these decisions. There is a bigger picture to marketing and selling and unfortunately she isn't the only one with a say in what goes. There books are really good to be honest, it has made me like them as real people so much more. Chip talks a lot about fixer upper and how they controlled a lot of what they did and it was hard for them. They got to a point where they had to set boundaries and eventually that lead to their own network where they can control the rules.

      It’ll be interesting to see what they get. Apparently Chip & Joanna bought this house for $425k, possibly less, restored, and then flipped it.
      While the neighborhood is considered exclusive, I also read that most residents have moderate incomes. That, coupled with the odd location (though it seems price includes the commercial lot behind house) makes me think they won’t get ultra top dollar. Maybe 1.6? I could be wrong, but a very similar castle by me, with 10br & baths, sold for $200k.
      If there’s not enough happening with the local economy, it might not command a really high price. But I’m really curious what they got! There’s money flying around throughout the US.
      Would love to see your lighting choices. I bought a vintage light for my foyer and it was pretty expensive. I’ve seen stuff in the tens of thousands, which is cray.

    Thanks for taking us on this 3d tour. This is a classic Craftsman interior. William Morris wallpaper and motifs in the wood trim all over the house. The wood is quarter sawn oak. Impossible to get now except in salvage. She restored it beautifully. That bathroom in the turret is stunning. I have never seen carpet on stairs in an authentic arts and crafts style home. I agree that some of the light fixtures could not hold a candle to the home's character. Purists would be upset about the bedrooms and the living room being painted but I agree with you and I do like it as a break from all the wood. I don't like anything modern, I like excellent quality but rustic in that If I get something in copper, I age it to the beautiful Patina if cooper green. I like the way Ralph Lauren does things too. I think if she would have went with ornate, vintage lighting it would have been overkill. We're not in 1922 anymore, the modern lighting brings this castle to present day yet somehow preserves the age. I absolutely love what they did with this entire project. Whether she's your style or not, Joanna is a magician. I don't understand the "anti-Magnolia" train. Her line at Target is reasonably priced and allows people to bring in vintage themes to cookie cutter homes. Not everyone has the time to live in an unfurnished home for months while trying to find "the perfect vintage coffee table". She managed to take one name and completely transform a small town in Texas. An unproblematic queen, we love to see it.

    Hi, thanks for reviewing this beautiful home. I think it would be ideal for a Baylor sorority. Anyway, here are a few hints for you. 1. The "heater things" are called radiators. I'm surprised they didn't fabricate covers for them because they can burn you. 2. The wood throughout is quarter-sawn oak, not walnut. Note the heavy veining. Very much used in the 1910s through 20s for bungalows and probably locally sourced. 3. You were right about the limestone. Classic and probably from a local quarry. 4. The wallpapers are also period, reproductions from Bradford & Bradford most often used in bungalows. 5. She probably got the lighting free! Period lighting is $$$! Keep up the great work. Love your channel. 😊

    The thing that Chip and Joanna have done for Waco is make it a place that people in Gen X, Baby Boomer and the Silent Generation now have a positive reference for the town, rather than just the horrific associations of its past.

    The light fixtures are Hudson Valley Lighting. The one in the foyer I actually had in my previous house. I assume they're using the real thing, which HVL would have probably comped. That bubble lights fixture on the main floor is an unfortunate choice because it is *EVERYWHERE* at the moment and will mark the house as 2023 but someone could always change it. The arts & crafts wallpaper is by William Morris. The wallpaper on one of the ceilings looks to me like Anagypta. I assume that, laws permitting, whoever buys it will make it an AirBB because the way you described the area, who would want to live there anyway?

    I'll concede that it's a more thoughtful renovation than I expected, but I'm certainly not wowed. I'm hoping they kept all the original light fixtures that remained and didn't actually remove any original period fixtures for that crap she put up. Dear Lord, they're all ghastly IMHO. I would love to have seen this home renovated by Heidi Caillier or Frances Merrill. And I think it's criminal that she removed the original green tile in the basement room with the dark wood paneling. She bugs me.
