Thanks again Joe for another good and honest video. If people are scared of buying a Cayman, take note. I took mine to a Porsche specialist in Dublin recently. I had a fair amount of work done. Work I've been putting off a long time. It's a small little place with two mechanics, one is the owner. This fella seemed to really know his stuff. He is almost 20 years in business working on mainly Porsche cars, he has in that time only 2 IMS issues and would you believe never had a bore scoring issue on a Cayman. I think it's simply down to luck. He did tell me however that driving a Cayman regularly is paramount. They are not to be treated like garage queen's.
Thank you! I’m smashing the videos out lately after a little gap. Yeah it does seem to be a lottery. I genuinely wonder how common bore score is, they did make many many thousands of these cars. It’s must be a small number. I was just so unlucky. Just shows in this video how much you can throw at these cars.
I've heard it called the Porsche tax. The money spent after buying the car. I just bought (9-6-2022) a 2006 987.1 S with 44,000 miles and immediatley took it to the shop and had everything checked. All flushed and new fluids, air cleaner, hoses were in good condition as well as the belts. It doesn't smoke at cold start and drives like a dream. I've got 2 other cars I drive, but this one is by far the best. 1 downside, it only came with one key! I've subscribed and look forward to your assessments.
My 2006 CS is almost 41,000 miles at the moment its running great. for being a 16 year old car just dumb things are going, like the head liner tand the cable in the inside door handle. despite all of that, its still the best car i ever owned.
Yeah so the things that are breaking are age related and not miles. That’s always going to happen. Imagine a 2006 French car, you would have most of the parts in the boot 🤣
Ive been enjoying my 987.1 Boxster S for 18 months now as a cheap, fun weekend car, bought with 120K miles but showing a regular 8K miles every year on MOTs with impeccable servicing, so i wasn't too worried. No issues at all for me in my first 10K miles with it. Ive enjoyed fiddling and replacing those dreaded heater switches, plus also found the manual gear knob top comes off super easy with a trim tool and was easily resprayed to look mint! (Def worth a go on the black Cayman). All in all a wonderful car to drive, and a car that makes people smile whether your driving it or watching it drive by... The amount of love passing strangers have shown it has been my biggest surprise! For smiles per mile, give me an old school Boxster/Cayman any time. Keep enjoying your cars guys and keep bringing us those vidz.
Full Elephant Racing kit on ours - so not a single rubber bush on the suspension arms or topmounts remains. You get the occasional clunk but the handling is sorted having been set up with a lot more camber. Ours is a track car BTW = sump extension, semi slicks etc.
Basalt black + lobster claws! That’s fantastic!! Did you happen to mention bore scoring? I might need to watch this again to check if you did 😂 Nobody ever makes videos, writes forum posts or mentions not having had bite scoring. So many cars driving about, owners oblivious to it, not on forums, not making YT videos, with no bore scoring. I’m not playing it down and it’s certainly worth checking over but the school of thought you can’t buy one without getting it, or buy one and budget for it or anything similar is wrong. Also the school of thought that a 17 year old car with 80k+ miles on original suspension is bad for wanting a refresh is also wrong. My wife’s peugeot 308 is regularly costing her £600+ at MOT time. Just west and tear. Yes porsche parts can be dearer. Apart from that they don’t need to cost ££££s at every point of maintenance or service (unless you take them to a Porsche specialist).
Might have not mentioned it, I can’t remember. I am aware of it just a little 🤣 my whole channel is based on it and my rebuild story. Yeah they are just like any old car, expensive. Porsche tax does bite occasionally tho. Thanks for the comment, it’s a stunning little car in that spec.
Joe - Owning Porsches doesn’t have to be an expensive proposition if you do your homework and buy the right car. Mileage isn’t that important if the car has been well-maintained. Did your friend in this video do a PPI on the car before he bought it? There’s a couple of obvious things like rust on the fenders, mold on the headliner, and some aftermarket bits added that are telltales that maybe the car hasn’t been that well taken care of. I own a 2007 987.1 base Cayman and base Boxster… they have had nothing but regular maintenance and annual oil changes. Both been excellent cars to own. All I’ve done on modifications is adding better stereo head units and wood shift knobs. Any Porsche that’s 10 to 15 years old at this point probably has some little bits that need to be fixed. That’s no big deal, most of those things we can do ourselves. There are plenty of RUclips videos to show how to fix them. Like the gummy temperature and fan buttons on the climate control unit. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your content.
Thanks for you kind comment:) yeah it’s all about the research, as far as I know he didn’t have a PPI on it but that’s the thing with so many Porsche purchases, especially first time owners. It’s heart over head Good to hear you haven’t had issues! The base ones do seem to be the way to go.

Buying a Porsche comes with some well known manufacturers issues, my old new Porsche 987.2 with 54k smokes on cold start, just a puff of smoke for a few seconds intermittently, I changed the AOS nothing happened until two days ago, the same puff of white smoke. I guess I may have to live with that mild embarrassment, any advise appropriated. I can’t imagine driving any other car not even a 911 as I love the midship engine. Having followed your experience with bore scoring I was guided to the 987.2. Thanks for sharing.
A small puff of smoke on start-up is completely normal for these cars, as they are flat six engines and some oil tends to pool in the cylinders if they’ve been sitting for a bit. It’s not an embarrassment it’s a Porsche!
Nice! Glad to hear I have helped your buying decision! Some do smoke, just seems to be the way. If yours is a .2 then it must be just the way it is. Unlikely to have bore score but not totally unheard of.
Interesting comparison. No PPI for either car and shows it’s just a lottery. I’m sure the Porsche lettering on the rear of the S was not standard for a 987 either. Think it was on the 981 onwards. Keep up the content Joe. 👍🏻

Porsche engine blocks were all steel up to 2008 which are subsetible to bore scoring, then after they were sleeved and removed IMS completely. I'm considering a MX5 instead of loosing sleep✌️
Not comparable in my opinion. I had them all. You go porsche if you did a mx5 and then a s2k and you end up looking at porsches because you got old and you want more comfort and more power but similar exciting driving experience . Its not really news that porsches are expensive in repair. I just dont think that they are comparable because the mx5 and s2k been bad daily drivers. The porsche can do both
The way I see it, these are a bit cheapper Caymans with maybe little less care and maintenance. I'm looking at a few and for the condition I need them in, they cost between 24-28k
