It would be a blast to work with this man for one day and just Learn and Learn and Learn...................................................Fort Worth,Tx.......United States
An original round headlight delight! top car Always wanted one, especially after seeing the Escorts in the 1968 London-Sydney Rally. My Late boss and I had the fuel stop at Mingary, South Australia and had the pleasure of fuelling themm (and most of the competitors)! It was a 17 year old's rev head's form of heaven!
As a youth, also my dream car. There was one in town, light blue with dark side panels; looked fantastic, and was the envy of everyone. It looks like you have plenty of parts there, so that's half the battle won already. Great work, keep it up.
I hope you checked it was a Type 49 bodyshell otherwise its a fraud but you have a stack of parts which is often the problem. I am sure you will do a superb job on it. I used to rally Mk 1s 'back in the day'. I sold my Lotus Cortina as a rolling shell as it had a Racing Services Twin Cam engine and a Rocket 'box and they went into an ex Boreham Escort Twin Cam (FTW 44H) which was seriously abused on night road rallies and the odd stage event. Won a few pots on the way. I rolled it on an event and bought an ex Boreham RS1600 rolling shell (RWC 458K) from David Sutton at Clark & Simpson which had just done the East African Safari rally with Vic Preston Jr. Still full of dust. Plan A was to re-use the Twin Cam engine and 'box but some thieving bar steward had other ideas. I managed to get an ally 1700 block, had a BDA engine built and 'acquired' a used ZF box from Boreham. I never really got on with the car although I did OK in it (did the Welsh Rally) and sold it. There is nothing that will give you a smile like an Escort on full chat. You steer it with the throttle. Brilliant cars then and they still are now and they are still being restomodded ...
wow steve, i had one of these ( not a real one) when i was .....er younger, mine had a stinking hot 2.0lt in it with twin webbers a ported head and lightend flywheel i used it for hill climbs .it was tremdously fast , untill it fell over with me in it ! great to see a classic like this on the channel
Once again, you have your work cut out to save this body but I know that when it is completed, it will be first class. Looking forward to future videos.
In canny good shape to be fair to it, if many of the repairs hadn't been 1980's cheapo bodges it would be better still.. I've seen people asking daft money for shells that need every panel replacing or top quality fab to save them. The greatest Ford produced in my lifetime, changed the way cars drove and handled and what peole wanted from a car.

Look forward to watching this project develop, you have so many projects now on the go , great work , watching all of them !!!! Lol😂
Your right about the dash, the mark 1 escort E had the six dials as well, unlike my escort had just the two, the mark 2 escort 1600 Mexico was also a real classic car, brilliant in its day
@@arfabarmcake2776yeah, the XL had it too, but with metal fake wood, the GT,Mexico,RS etc all had matte black surrounds and the E had thick solid wood 😀 very desirable if you could find one in a breakers yard. You are working on some oldskool cool cars, but this ones going to be the best and being an escort I’m sure it will send you’re subscriptions through the roof👍

Great project Steve, we all love these cars. It looked deceptively good from a distance! It's kind of a clean version of the Datsun really. When I first saw it I thought that doesn't look a bad old escort, then you turned it upside down, oh-dear it's as ripe as a pear! Looking forward to this one.
Loved the mk1 Mexico, my uncle had a few, when I was growing up, in capable hands 👌 when hopefully soon I bring me 1968 merc, it will be stripped like this, make life a bit easier for you guys as in going forward 👍
I lived in a mk1 van for about 8 1/2 months as a young lad. I wasn’t very happy about it, but I loved the car. I later had a mk2 van with a 1600 sport/GT (XR2 😀) engine in it, still had the 4.11 1100 box and diff in it, lowering blocks at the back and very rusted rear arches, looked like it was full of cement, surprised a few people across the lights 😀 the drivers door fell off it as I got out to put £2 worth of petrol in it outside the local court house I was trying to visit discretely … ah, I was not having a lovely time 😂

Maybe I'm looking through rose tinted glasses them front wings look salvageable mayb they could be repaired at some point for content for the channel Steve and used on another restoration in the future. Absolutely love the channel and what you both do keep up the amazing work ♥️👍
As daunting as it looks, and my Mk1 Mexico was almost as bad, it looks a nice clean project as it's been all media blasted and primed. Look forward to seeing you weld it back up, that's a lot of panels!

I've done a few bonnets off them ^^ for owners Steve - the front lips are an absolute sod with the curvature.. I've also done a couple front to back metalwork - they're not the worst to do - that one looks to be in reasonably good shape fundamentally - usually they're absolute grot-boxes everywhere. I know it looks bad, but compared to many examples, it's alright.. Plus all them shiny panels you've got - nice to have to hand, makes things very straightforward.

Great that you've already got so many replacement panels: I hope they are all good fits, Do you have all the data to be able to check the car for straightness before you brace it all up in order to cut out all the nastiness ? A full chassis jig would be nice, but I'm sure would be horrendously expensive. Look forward to watching the progress on this one as well as the multitudinous other projects you and Ryan have underway. Best wishes.
These famous "Little cars that could" like the Escort, AE86 etc all have body repair manuals available online, so won't be an issue with this one I'm sure :)
Yes Steve it looks like mine is as bad, even though it's 1996 RS2000 4x4. Plus you can get way more panels for the mark 1 than I can get for the mark 6. Keep an eye on mine tell me what I'm doing wrong or right. Fantastic to watch you guys.

Now this will be quite interesting. Will you be saving the original fenders? They have to be better than the replacements which look like klokkers. Always fun seeing working. Cheers!
My first car as a 16 year old was a Mk1 3 door Escort, remember the days when you went down the local scrappie’s to pick up spares for them. I’m looking forward to seeing how this turns out. My second car was a Mk1 Opel Manta and I can see a Manta next to the Escort. My third car was a Mini Clubman 1275GT and I see a Mini in there too 😁 That jig is an impressive piece of kit, that will save some backs and knees in the future. I was wondering how you were going to deal with the heat distortion, whilst welding and if you will need to check the chassis is straight………………….?
Love this and cant wait to see this progress Odd auto's did a bubble arch build was absolutely amazing, if it was a mk2 i'd say it would be cheaper to get a new shell now @8k would you just give him a estimate or just say it costs as much as it costs and not lock into a figure ?

My first car as a 16 year old was a Mk1 3 door Escort, remember the days when you went down the local scrappie’s to pick up spares for them. I’m looking forward to seeing how this turns out. My second car was a Mk1 Opel Manta and I can see a Manta next to the Escort. My third car was a Mini Clubman 1275GT and I see a Mini in there too 😁
That jig is an impressive piece of kit, that will save some backs and knees in the future. I was wondering how you were going to deal with the heat distortion, whilst welding and if you will need to check the chassis is straight………………….?
Where's Ryan?
He was King of the rusty wrecks!
👍🏴
Love this and cant wait to see this progress Odd auto's did a bubble arch build was absolutely amazing, if it was a mk2 i'd say it would be cheaper to get a new shell now @8k
would you just give him a estimate or just say it costs as much as it costs and not lock into a figure ?
A lot of work there Steve. Are you still waiting on parts for the MK2.5 Rocketeer conversion. It been on that lift for ages.
Didn't look to bad from the top! Like your choice of welder in the background. RTec always work well for me
WOW.!!!.i thought this car looked mint....then it got flipped over.....lot of rust for so few years on the road....wish i still had my old 69 mk1
Did a Seagull do the previous welding on the escort 😂. 👍🇦🇺
