@MondoChelloveMovies I don't know how you did it, but your description really nailed the bizarre, kinky, uniqueness of THUNDERCRACK, despite having to tiptoe so carefully thru the YT minefield! Thank you for such a comprehensive, accurate review of this movie.
I'm a history loving, straight white guy who is Libertarian-Conservative in his views, so THUNDERCRACK is totally out of my normal territory. (I'd picked up THUNDERCRACK out of the "for sale" bin at a public library, by accident, thinking I was getting THUNDER ROAD!!) So, the first viewing was WTH!!! The second view created a fascination that led down a rabbit-hole of research. The fact that Curt McDowell (30 at the time), was directing and filming his younger sister Melinda (23) in the "heavy action" scenes she was involved with in THUNDERCRACK stunned me. But my initial, "how could a big brother do that to his kid sister?" reaction changed after reading many interviews with Melinda. Melinda adored Curt, and still misses him, so now my reaction is "Melinda and Curt had to have one of the closest, most honest open and accepting brother-sister bonds of all time". The people and story behind THUNDECRACK is every bit as interesting as the movie itself! Best wishes, and thanks again for the excellent review.

😁😁 thanks mate!! Yeah it was a potential minefield to make the video, obviously you have seen the film, so you understand that most of the iconic moments you would discuss would have words in that would fall foul of RUclips and this video would dissappear if it was ever allowed out, which in itself is a travesty 😵‍💫😵‍💫 but thanks for all this info mate 🤩🤩👏👏 yeah I've been contacted by people who knew Carl and Melinda and explained their relationship after I'd mafe the video and I completely get it 👍👍 I agree that Thundercrack definitely isn't just about the film, it's about everything else that made it!!! Truly fascinating tale!!! Cheers for watching and this amazing comment 🤩🤩👏👏

Thanks very much for the shout out, John. You did a great job in describing what is a pretty indescribable movie- which is of course, why it’s so unique! I saw it around 1996/1997 and I’ve never forgotten it.
Would love to hear more from Barry about his interactions with the people involved.
I am gonna have to order that blu ray!

No problems David, I thought your description was spot on!! Yeah I know I said it a few times but it's hard to talk about the film because its so subversive!! I'm surprised the video didn't flag up at all 😱😱🤣🤣 so would I David....I would have loved to talk with cast even for 10mins.....never mind actually KNOWING them!! 😱😱👌👌 it's a cracking blu Ray David 😁😁👍👍

Great review John. Remember buying the DVD when me and the missus went to Amsterdam many many years ago. Upgraded to the Synapse Blu when it first came out. Another one to look out for is, for me, the better film is 'Singapore Sling'. Crazy, twisted Greek film, that I think Vinegar have just released on 4K and Blu. Another B&W slice of utter mayhem, degradation and "WTF have I just watched?" These films are certainly a time capsule to behold, keep in the collection to be handed down to future filum heads.

Thundercrack (1975) has now been passed uncut by the BBFC according to the Website. Maybe the "Bunny Game" (2012) might follow but i doubt HMV would stock it? Have a nice weekend John.

Ebay would definitely not list it, cheers for watching mate 🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍

I was at the premiere at the San Francisco Art Institute. Marion Eaton received a standing ovation. Kuchar told his famous anecdote about writing the screenplay "on both sides of the page". Curt pointed out some continuity problems, like the Berkeley Farms milk carton in the kitchen scenes. For some reason I think it opened with Sally Cruikshank's "Quasi at the Quackadero" but I could be mixing up 2 separate dates.

    • @barrymoore4470

That is a memory to cherish, for sure! Did you know Curt from the Art Institute? He had graduated by then, but George was teaching there by that point, and Curt I think maintained close ties to the place for the rest of his life. I regret I never had the opportunity to meet Curt, nor Marion Eaton.

@@MondoChelloveckMovies Everyone I've ever met who knew Curt remembers him as such a fun and creative person--his former associate Rocky Ross (whom I've not met), in the 2009 documentary 'It Came from Kuchar', describes how Curt could literally charm the pants off you. Curt himself avidly documented his daily life to an extraordinary degree, constantly writing, drawing (he was a gifted cartoonist and painter), photographing, and filming--a treasure trove for future scholars of his legacy.

Really enjoyed your review, John, and you did a great job of tact in introducing the film without setting off any RUclips alarm signals. It's certainly not a film for everyone, but those who appreciate it tend to like it a lot.
I'm aware of at least three other feature-length productions Curt directed, 'Peed into the Wind' and 'Lunch', both from 1972, and 'Sparkle's Tavern', his follow-up to 'Thundercrack!', shot mostly in 1976 but not fully edited and released until years later, in 1984. 'Sparkle's Tavern' is the sole film among these three I've seen, in a rare VHS transfer that was gifted to me some twenty years ago. It retains much of the cast from 'Thundercrack!', starring Marion Eaton, George Kuchar, Melinda McDowell, and Phil Heffernan (who played Chandler in the earlier film under the alias Mookie Blodgett). It's a gentler, more fantasy-oriented story, highly sexually suggestive without ever becoming explicit, and also shot in black-and-white--Curt also wrote the screenplay for this one.
Curt specialized in shorts, almost all of them shot in black-and-white (Melinda tells me he loved the look of black-and-white photography), and among these I've seen 'PornograFollies' (the first of his films I ever saw) and 'A Visit to Indiana' (both from 1970), 'Confessions' and 'Ronnie' (both from 1972), 'Boggy Depot' and 'True Blue and Dreamy' (both from 1973), 'Nudes: A Sketchbook', 'Naughty Words', and 'Stinkybutt' (all from 1974), and 'Loads' from 1980, the latter highly explicit and probably Curt's masterpiece. a truly unique film in cinema history. All these I've seen via VHS transfers, except for 'PornograFollies', which I saw at a film club screening in 1988, and found utterly fascinating, a vision of a vaudeville revue, the kind you might have gone to in the Thirties, where every act has a sexual or scatological component. I knew I wanted to learn more about the man behind this singular film, and that started me on my journey of eventual friendship with George and Melinda.
Thanks again for the shout-out and probing review, John!
