When I was at different state in Malaysia, I try to ask sambal kicap, the seller wonder what is sambal kicap. He got no idea about it. That was in 2001.
Only then I know that sambal kicap is only available in Johor. But nowadays I believe some of pisang Goreng seller already served you together with sambal kicap or sweet sambal.
It did really goes well with both. To a certain point that pisang Goreng without sambal kicap feel like eating roti canai without curry or dhal gravvy.. Hehehe

Keledek goreng / Fried sweet potatoes (sweet potato fritters) also go well with sambal kicap. Try it, it's amazing! The sweetness of sweet potatoes added with the fried crispy batter shell when dipped into the sweet salty spiciness savoriness of the soy of sambal kicap, the taste is indescribable! To describe it as amazing is an understatement. I'm not from Johor but when I was young, I lived in Johor and attended elementary school there and the school canteen served fried sweet potatoes with sambal kicap! Heaven! I've acquired Johoreans palate since young. I love Johor food especially Laksa Johor, Soto, and more. Johoreans also makes the best traditional chips -tapioca chips, rempeyek, etc.

Tips on making sure you can make that bowl easily without tearing or breaking the banana leaves is to, 'layar' it on top of fire.
Turn on the stove fire small, the smallest, then move around the leaves that you already cut onto the fire. Make sure you do it quick.
That way, the banana leaves will be softer and pliable. Move it quickly on top of the fire.
Don't let it stay at the same place for long time. The colour of the leaves will change darker.

So cute la you guys! The fact you enjoyed the plain banana so much shows how much you appreciate food. That crunchy sound really affirms you got it right!! If you get sweet potatoes &keledek (cassava), you can fry it also.. A staple in all the kedais in Malaysia. You made me missing my hometown in Melaka
