    Wonderful video! It's so nice to travel lightly with Leica. At 02:31 in the video, in the photo displayed I can see the exact apartment I rented back in 2018. Lisbon is such a beautiful city!

    I tried many many Cameras & lens combo over the years, I ended up settling with M-P Safari with modern Silver 35mm Summicron. Giving up film camera or wide & telephoto lenses were not easy, but now I travel light, uses unique limited edition, still got that film look, and perfect combo for someone that takes photos of traveling family members mostly.

    I'm going for a couple of proper vacation-like visits (tho, very short ones) for the first time since the pandemic. As for what I’m bringing I’m considering one of the following lens sets to go along with one of my X-Pro3s:
    - XF18mm f2 (28mm FF equiv), which I just got.
    - XF18mm f2 and XF35mm f2 (50mm FF equiv)
    - Split the difference and go for my trusty 23mm f2 (35mm FF equiv)
    Previously I’ve actually travelled only with a XF16mm f2.8 (24mm FF equiv). I was very focused on capturing my environment (incl. very tight spaces) and it worked wonders for that, but I won’t have the same focus this time around.
    Thanks for making the video. The intro is very cute and gives off Wes Anderson vibes. :)

    The same focal lengths and one M11-P because I can’t afford two yet!
    I use the 35mm Apo Summicron and as you say, it covers a significant proportion of my needs. Last time I travelled to Portugal I took that and a 50 Lux. Didn’t use the 50 even once. Sold it and got a 75 Apo. Added a Voigtlander 21 f1.4 but will switch to the Leica 21 you are using when funds allow. The Voigtlander is excellent, but a bit large.

    Alex, the 35 FLE and the 21 Elmar are MAGIC, both wide enough to do zone focusing/hyperfocal distance, and both equal to the M10's resolution. The 21 was my first, and I love making it almost a fancy point and shoot - set focus, and frame with the external finder (I have the black plastic Leitz one). Thinking about adding a 50 Summilux ASPH, would be nice to have two faster lenses. The 75 just looks too heavy? Interested to get your thoughts, and also if you just pocketed the lenses in a jacket with like a sleeve or something... nice video, thank you!

    Nice shots from Portugal. If I threw out my personal documents, medication, safety west, notebook, pencils and all the Cokin filter set A (P), I could fit my Leica travel kit in a Bellingham Leica M bag too. You know, in case of, it would be nice to have all the stuff at hand. My travel kit consists of an M-P240 and a M240, a Summilux 50/1.4, an Elmar M 24/3.8 and a Summarit 90/2.5. You may wonder why I as a press photographer stick to a minimalistic kit for my daily work, but 95 % of my shots are taken with this kit. The M-P 240 and the LUX 50 are always with me. Always wear a camera!

Curious what your thoughts are as you did not mention a 50mm in this video.

    Good Video. Interesting how we all have different methods that work for us! I don't carry any of those focal length lenses when shooting M film or digital. I normally carry a 50 and a 28 Summicron. OCCASIONALLY I include the 90mm Elmarit M but end up almost never using it. The ever-popular 35 mm is my least favorite lens of all time - not wide enough for a wide, too narrow for normal. I have the 21 but use it even less than the 90. ;) If I had to carry only one lens, it would be the 28. But if decided to do that, a Q2 would be a better choice than an M! :)

    It just seems like most Wedding Photographers have more passion for photography in general, and photography gear, than the actual work of shooting Weddings. Since most talk more about the gear and street photos, then actually working the wedding, Maybe we should hear more about the actual day-to-day work, maybe they don't like it so much. But it would be good to hear your thoughts about it.

  • @StuartWeir
    @StuartWeir Год назад

    Might be a dumb question, but do you add any padding to the cameras on the plane, due to the vibration from the plane, or do you just leave them in the Billingham and they are fine? I ask because I wonder if you do anything extra to protect from the rangefinder going out of alignment

    • @alexjohnsonphotography
      @alexjohnsonphotography  Год назад

      I don't. The Billingham is padded very well and I'm not sure I could protect it more. I just toss it up in the overhead and call it a day. The way I see it, Leica (especially the film bodies) were meant to be used in the field so should survive a little vibration... I am fortunate that I know how to recalibrate them at home and have done so once with my M10, no idea what knocked it out of calibration but it's an easy enough fix if you're patient and know what you're doing. Thanks for the comment!

    I would be curious to learn how you handled the logistics of traveling with film. There seems to be a consensus forming that the new CT scanners for hand luggage will ruin any speed film. Hand inspection is possible in some US airports, but again the consensus appears to be that it is less reliably available elsewhere. Did you bring it with you, undeveloped, in both directions?

    • @alexjohnsonphotography
      @alexjohnsonphotography  Год назад

      I just don’t worry about it. I’ve asked agents to hand check higher speed film in the past, but I typically don’t travel with anything higher than 400 iso these days. Also, on this last trip, the airports I flew through were pure chaos, just barely making our connections, so the extra step of having them take your bag aside and bomb swab everything is a huge pain. Other folks out there have different opinions but this is how I do it these days.

      @@alexjohnsonphotography Thanks for the reply! That's interesting. I would not go film on a trip, fragile and complex handling at airports. Now that you are back you can check what lens you effectively used and not used. I see myself frequently making one shoot with that lens I traveled with just to say it was not for nothing, while in fact I used another 99% of time. I'd like to bring a monochrom on the other hand as a second body, should you have the chance to have one. thanks for the input

      I had no real issues with it. I keep a journal and have a, pardon the pun, photographic memory, so I don't have trouble recalling which lens was used for what. A monochrom for travel would be incredible!

    I'm an idiot who brings everything but the kitchen sink to his vacation, while usually using only about 30 to 40% of all that crap...
