Leica M6 vs M11 feat. Leica 50mm APO-Summicron-M+ Portra400
I wanted to try and remove as many variables as possible in order to compare these two cameras, or more accurately, comparing film vs digital using the same system. Nothing is perfect and this was for fun so I hope you enjoy.

"It’s a true statement to what is possible in this modern era of ultra-refined extraordinarily precise computer-aided design" or something like that... Wow. Totally unnecessary hyperbole. The f/0.95 Noctilux was introduced in 2008, primarily for film cameras, even before Leica had a full-frame digital camera. The M9 didn't start shipping until January of 2010. The 50/0.95 is now 16 years old. It has a hideous field curvature that pulls in the corners, so while the bokeh in the central part of the frame is really nice, the corners come back into focus and are very distracting. Also out of focus points of light (bokeh balls) away from the center take on a wonky triangular shape. It might have been considered sharp on film, but I have never heard anyone one other than you call this lens "too sharp". Wide open, it is soft in the center, very soft mid-range, and completely a mush at the edges. For about 6-8 years, the novelty factor of the lens kept it propped up on a pedestal, but the bloom has been off the rose for several years now. There are now at least three other comparable lenses that have surpassed it, one of which is actually in its third generation! All of those cost a fraction of the Noctilux.

Keep things discreet would be my tip. Ask yourself, does my bag scream I have a Leica/expensive camera? I take a small, non camera bag incase it rains. A couple of rolls of films on me. Nothing else. Stay safe. Enjoy your magical camera. Keep making amazing images.

I JUST bought the silver Noctilux three days ago for my Nikon Z9 with the Novoflex adapter. The very first thing that threw me off was the minimum focus distance of 3 feet. I was not expecting that because I wanted to get closer. I was basically testing it out on random objects in the house so I really haven’t had the chance to test it out yet on a model or anything like that. The lens is absolutely gorgeous, it’s heavy so you feel like you got your money’s worth, and I’ll admit that I bought it for bragging rights. Another RUclips video recommended using B&W close up lenses that had a 60mm thread. These lenses reduce the minimum focusing distance, I was impressed with that video. I also saw a video of the other Noctilux, the 75mm f1.25 lens for portraits. Then there’s the Voigtlander 75mm f1.5……I’ll keep the Leica 50mm 0.95 Noctilux because it really looks amazing on the Nikon Z9, and the focus peaking and magnification helped nail focus easily at 0.95. I think (but don’t know for sure) that the Nikon Z9 is a much better choice to use the Leica 50mm f0.95 Noctilux than the Leica SL3

Its kinda a weird thing, cant say that its clinically sharp like other f1.2 lenses, its preety close to TTartisan 50mm f0.95 that costs around 16 times less, dont know haw leica didnt managed to make it as sharp like their other flagsip lenses, but here we are, and if you want that blown background and crisp image ill definitely would go for Nikkor Notc, cause other lens designes seem lil outdated for now

Great comparison, I agree, film has a particular quality that is unique, digital sensors have made great progress but I think the focus has been on resolution and megapixel, colour science hasn’t been the forefront, to my experience. Whereas film, I feel like it was more about the colour science and the grain of the film. So with those being the focus points film tends to understand the scene way differently than a digital sensor does. I shoot with the MP and a Steel rim as my main driver.

The same focal lengths and one M11-P because I can’t afford two yet! I use the 35mm Apo Summicron and as you say, it covers a significant proportion of my needs. Last time I travelled to Portugal I took that and a 50 Lux. Didn’t use the 50 even once. Sold it and got a 75 Apo. Added a Voigtlander 21 f1.4 but will switch to the Leica 21 you are using when funds allow. The Voigtlander is excellent, but a bit large.

I've used a prototype Noctilux! I an NOT in favor of these Hi-Speed lenses on an M camera! I used it on my M3. Longer RF! The RF of M-bodies is at limit at f2. Going to f1.4 risky! Using a 50mm as a close-up portrait lens, is plain distortion. Sorry. I've never needed more than f2! And guess what about closer than 3'4" 1m, CROP! I had very sharp images with prototype!

This is a great comparison thanks for posting. I've been around the digital round-about a few times and I bought the M11 this time and it's already gone back. It's not the camera's fault, it's just film to me is so much more beautiful and the tones all work together wonderfully. I didn't like the milk aspect of the M11 you spoke about which you can get from a lot of digital. To be fair I much prefer the film workflow too, from shooting to post. I think at least 50% of the reason to keep shooting film lay in that side of things. The other is the look, and your photos have really summed that up, there wasn't a single digital photo I preferred and even if there was the workflow would remain an issue. Your comparison was one of the few interesting ones out there. Thanks again for sharing.

I don't see the 21 Elmar get brought up a lot - thanks for introducing me to this nifty piece of glass! I have an M11 with a 28mm 'cron that I brought on vacation to France and Italy. I rely heavily on cropping in, but am leaning toward acquiring a 50mm soon in an attempt to bridge the 35-75 gap (similarly to your 28-50 gap cover with the 35mm lens). Curious what your thoughts are as you did not mention a 50mm in this video.

Like you, I grew up with film. Actually it was the only option as I started in the 70's. Over the last year I have returned to film after 20 years working with digital. I now use both regularly. Love my M6 and Voigtlander 35mm Nokton. I also shoot with the Q2 and love the results. I've never thought to compare side by side. Might be an interesting test. I'm almost exclusively black and white using TriX and HP5. I sometimes take both film and digital when I wander but it depends on my mood.

Alex, the 35 FLE and the 21 Elmar are MAGIC, both wide enough to do zone focusing/hyperfocal distance, and both equal to the M10's resolution. The 21 was my first, and I love making it almost a fancy point and shoot - set focus, and frame with the external finder (I have the black plastic Leitz one). Thinking about adding a 50 Summilux ASPH, would be nice to have two faster lenses. The 75 just looks too heavy? Interested to get your thoughts, and also if you just pocketed the lenses in a jacket with like a sleeve or something... nice video, thank you!

I have really enjoyed using Cobalt profiles lately. They have done an incredible job of matching the film stocks. Be interested to hear if you have used them at all. Such a great starting point to match the film aesthetic in a truly balanced way. I also recognized the name and realized I bought a piece of gear off you. Cheers man!!!! Good stuff here
