About This Video:
In this video, Nick Campbell from Greyscalegorilla shows you how to model a low poly cage in Cinema 4D to control a high poly model with softbody dynamics. Also learn how to use Signal to animate your softbody movement.
just use polygon reduction on the original mesh and use that as the cage. you can skip the 30 mins of modeling.
lol wish I read the comments first :(
If you can keep your subscribers on your video for longer time you will earn more :D
then add displacer with a whiteish color in the shader to make the new mesh outside the original object
I paused the video to see if anyone else was thinking the same thing. Polygon reduction seems much more efficient.
Oh boy! with this you can rig a low poly model and then apply to a high res with practically no effort. And trust me, is a workflow really needed and not easy to find. Despite all those years, i am happy to see that always is something remain that you can teach us (even with a old video).
Wow. It's amazing. I have fun with this tutorial. Thank you very much.
Amazing... as usual!
Elementary modeling ends and the actual tutorial start at 24:30. Good stuff after that. :)
every time you call it a t-rex i cry inside. Fantastic tut though will make some interesting dynamics for hair.
hehe. It makes me cry when I re-watch it, too. What was I thinking? :)
good tutorial.. thank you!
Great tutorial! Watching your Videos just like playing games. So funny!
Hi, I have been a fan of your channel for years. I was wondering if could do more tutorials on cinema4d particles, I don't have xparticles. Thank you so much for your hard work, you guys rock!
Thank you dude you are awesome
You are Soo Cool Thank for all you Amazing TuTo
Haha, this is so great! I'm using soft bodies in my next video!
OMG I LOVE YOU, thank you very much, man!
thx a lot
Amazing! had a question, how would u move the raptor forward. Im having trouble moving mine. It wants to stay in the same place. Like if I wanted him to walk down the street and keep doing that. Been trying to do it with this pool floaty but once it hits the ground I cant get it to move forward.
Amazing:)
Thanks for the tutorial :-) I just find collisions with this technique quite inaccurate as the actual render geometry has to sit so far inside the cage. I tried offsetting the collisions but it only pushes out. Any advice for tightening this up, or another, more accurate method inside C4D? Thanks again!!!!
lol !!! funny, but I thought of it more about 2 weeks ago!) That is, in the last year!) the truth, I used this technique to deform metal, when tearing off the wing of the aircraft in C4D ... if you're interested, I could send your project) The idea for the next lesson - how to make a spline vomiting, using spline dynamics tag ??? I think it will be interesting!) Good luck dude!)))
Please, tutorial for Rigging a Character
Ps: no xpresso, thanks o/
For the superlazy guys: should be possible to get this cagebuilding stuff with almost one click. Instead of rebuilding the mesh manually just put a polygonreducer-deformer down beneath the highpolymesh to create the cage (make a copy before). Didn't try it but I think it could work. Anyway, love your channel, greez to you and Chris.
not the same... polyreduction deformer often creates messy triangulated geo that not suits very well with softbody simulations
ArgoBeats u might be right but it's worth a trial. It belongs just to the cage so that would be really an almost-one-click-solution instead of rebuilding the shape.
Sure, petabyte99, that'd be a dream but I have tried that on so many meshes that I found quite imprecise... I love C4D but I think the Softbody compartment still needs lots of better implementation and optimization (multithread support for ex.). I'm thinking to start to learn Houdini for this, I dig softbody dynamics, there's a lot of potential in 'em but I never could make really working with Cinema, unless you deal with basic meshes like spheres or lettering. If anyone has got a 1-click solution please let us know!
Z-Brush has a tool called "remesher" that does magic. Take a look.
thanks Zor Mon, I'll check that!
Possible to use the pressure setting with mesh deformer? Haven't been able to get it to work
Hey, I'm trying to throw the mesh along with its cage in a null and use the null to feed it into a cloner. It's not working. Can you help
Can i active the soft body dinamic when the object touch other object like a...wall or other stuff like this?
How do I expand the cage?
Why final animation do not show in my render? =/
wow
VERY NICEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I'm trying a add a soft body tag to a model ..I did everything ..I used the mesh deformer but it keeps exploding ..any help !
Is there a way, for example, to leave just the tail with physics?
Does anybody know how to make a "real" ragdoll in cinema? Where the limbs would react realistic and all that jazz? Like in a video game?
Thanks
Poor Barney! (You made me laugh!!!)
Fun one. :D
can you do this to a rigged character?
damn cool !!
We agree! Thanks for watching!
no need to apologise... I'm learning along with you 😉 @Nick
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
great tutorial, thanks a lot.
just one thing, I did this to my model and all Works fine. But want to put the model on an particle emmiter, and thats when stop working. any tips ?
thanks again, cheers.
Try putting it in a connect object first.
I was able to do it by baking the low poly simulation, and then I just change the low poly by the hy one in the emmiter and it works. It was an act of despair but it works haha
thanks for all the help.
Can you please make a tutorial on how to make bug-like-shapes or balls crawl under the skin! Or can somebody here please show me a basic method to atleast approaching this.. Would greatly appreciate it
Hey Nick! I cant find the tag Signal, is it because Im using an older version? thx
Signal is a plugin that we sell. You can learn more about it here. greyscalegorilla.com/downloads/signal/
I was doing this tutorial with the frog but i'm having all types of problems... :_(
Try with a dinosaur. Frogs are moody these days.
Is there no way to clone this nick?!? Thanks for all your work
Not sure. What happened when you tried it?
Hi fellow artists and designers I need your help with some diffculties I'm having in C4D.
i've modelled and rigged a siren for a short film, and I'm trying to set the physics with the hair in order to make it solid.
The problem is that after doing some IK in the hair (because it's made with tentacles) I activated the dynamics on that, but I realised that It doesn't collide with the skin.
When I enable the collider in the dynamic menu inside that IK tag and chose the mesh as a collider object it gets crazy, I assume thats because the joints are trying to escape from the inside of the object.
I'm sure there must be a obvious way to fix this but I'm baffled because I can't find any solution.
Thanks for you help guys I really appreciate any advice on this!
I can't help you, but have you tried for advice on cinema4D café?
here is the link if you aren't familiar with it: www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/
I am pretty sure you'll get your questions answered there ;)
try changing the shape dynamics in the collider tag to static mesh
This is ideal! thanks for sharing. #amazingasalways < lol :)

man i love this..
i cant stop laughing.
hehe.
wait wait wait if u buy a pack on ur website do I get that pack i bought for life or just limited tine
+Garfield Kurts you can always use what you buy. No ongoing charges.
Greyscalegorilla good cus im I'm buying the x-particels
Thanks for this great tutorial!
Is there a way to make only a part of a mesh a softbody while skinning the part that shouldn't be affected by dynamics using bones?
In LightWave we can use a Weight to define what's soft and what's not (the same can be done in Cinema). While in LightWave I can then move/skin the mesh in total freedom and get the soft dynamics to react properly, I didn't find a way to do the same in Cinema. Any solution?
Basically I'd like to get the same effect you see in this video without having to use dynamic muscles or dynamic bones:

Thank you!
Yo Nick, not to be that "um actually" guy but that's a velociraptor.
+Courtney Varner thanks! I really messed that one up eh!?
Normanie I Love U jesteś drugim po Andrew Kramer.gdzie języka którego nie znam ROZUMIEM !!!!! Dziękuję
It's not working
I tried do it to sphere
cage doesn't move
Ahahaha! poor dinosaurT.T
