- I get a lot of DMs from you guys regarding random brown/yellow spots on the leaves. The first question I would ask is if this person has been misting the leaves indoors. About 9 out of 10 the answer is yes. This prompted me to do this video about misting to share all I know about the subject. (Spoiler: Do not mist your leaves indoors, ever). But there are times/cases where misting certain species or aerial roots will benefit the plant greatly. Find out why!

I mist some of my indoor plants, certain ones. Like if I see a node starting to branch out, I mist the nodes/stem. It's helping a lot. I've noticed faster growth in the node development than when I wasn't misting before. I just make sure to have a fan going when I mist. Great video, Sean!

Lately, some of my trailing plants stem were showing signs of burn/dried up on the middle of the stem. I quickly cut it up and propagate before it stops its supplies to other leaves. Now I know why to wet mist its stems. Thank you. And that beautiful Costus when you lifted up @8:30, it shines straight to my soul hahaha.

I definitely agree with the misting indoors. That just helps for some minutes, but it can really make a mess and not only waterstains, but the drops collect the dust of the leaf to one point, and it can look alot more dirty with the time.
But for increasing the humidity, it definitely works to group the plants, and also to have more plants in one room. So I have seem a Hugh differnce in my livingroom between having there 15 or 80 plants 😆 . I know not everyone can have so many plants in one room, but if so, you can create a little microclimate in the whole room. It depends on the volume of the room and number and or size of the plants.
So before with a low number of plants in my living room they always struggled in winter heating period, because it got super dry and I can't keep up watering, but now with I guess a 100 plants in there, they do pretty well when heating is on on the humidity goes up not down if the temperature increases.
So I well try to balance my plants to the humidity level in a room, so I don't need to use anything else to keep the humidity on that level I want. I'm talking about like min. 50% to max. 65% . I don't want to have it higher in a open room.
Also your suggestion about our watering supplies is great, that you, I forget that too.

Thanks for the mist tip! I put some water in my water tray for my fern plant I have when it gets really really hot and the plant always drink it so fast! It loves water but I never mist any of my plants.

Ooo try misting its aerial roots instead. They can actually take in some water and ambient humidity from the aerial roots

Let's be honest here. Sean is the best bo.ta.nist. Period. Btw, what about showering plants? I like to take some of mine to the bathroom and shower them there. I do it to my peace lillies and ficuses
Ive got a better idea… showering with plants. Mmmmm… haha. I hose down my plants if they are pest infested, but its nice to clean down the leaves once in a while.

Misting the aerial roots is a great tip. Misting is not cleaning either but sometimes I give the leaves of some plants a gentle tap water shower. Our South sunny windows are next to a street. THis causes tons of dust to come in the window. It is overwhelming to clean the leaves with a cloth. Even a soft makeup brush would just spread the dust to lower leaves. We also have lots of minerals in the water. What do you think of using distilled water on a soft microfiber cloth to clean leaves? Is a soft shower all wrong? Thanks.
Distilled water with soft cloth may be best in your condition 😀 since you may have minerals in tap.
Sean, when you said misting is not an efficient way to deliver nutrients to the plants, does that make foliar feeding somewhat useless?
I have the same question too
I believe so. Depending on the nutrients, it may harm the leaves too.
Chemicals: contains salt/minteral buildups that may burn leaves
Natural: may contain organic material that attracts fungus/bacteria that may rot the leaf.
It is common sense to me to fertilize the roots rather than leaves. With exceptions of some species such as tillandsias that take in nutrients specifically from the leaves and not the roots.

Hi Sean, would you please share where one can buy the spray bottle you used in this video?
The bottle seems to be trigger-free; my mother who has arthritis is desperately looking for a spray bottle that doesn't require her to use her fingers/joints constantly when misting fertilizer and pesticide.
Mine was gifted from a viewer. I cant remember her name lol but Im sure any online marketplace should have it. Its rechargeable by usb so do use some of these keywords in your search 😀

Hi Sean, speaking of difficulties in water propagation, I’ve had a monstera peru cutting with few leaves and nodes. However it doesn’t seem to root in water even after more than 3 months, should I just cut them up?
Yes best to cut them up. Maybe its confused what to do haha.
Ηi Sean!! This is a very interesting topic!! I always mist my caletheas. I water my aroids when the moisture meter shows moist to dry.
If you must mist the calatheas be sure to sterilize the mist bottle and spray component often.
Misting plants prevents me from overwatering them . It curbs my urge 😂

Their leaves droop so much from the weight of water. I think best to water the media often. I keep mine wet all the time but they get excellent light.
@@onlyplants what's your soil mixture for this ? Mine comes in a bark mixture, and it seems so airy (?). Once I moisture probe it, it always reads at 3, even when I water it everyday.

Oh no they would mess calatheas up where I live. Have you had success with misting your calatheas? Every conditions and water quality is different I guess. If you sterilize your mister every month and use only distilled water I can see there being no problem.
@@onlyplants yeah, I only use filtered water and mist mostly back of the leaves and stem. That’d be fine, I guess? 😅 also, I’m in Vietnam which is as humid as Indonesia
