Today I am attempting to making vinyl records out of chocolate at home and testing if they actually play music. Back 6 years ago the band found goo.gl/gcaoB7 released a record made out of chocolate as did breakbots goo.gl/hDwZBJ so I am up for the challenge, let's give it a go making chocolate records.

This concept just reminds me how insane it is that you can hear someone else's voice sung on a piece of plastic! Just blows my adult mind!
I mean the idea of digital music is a whole lot more complicated, the physics of a record player is practically elementary comparitavely

You didn't set the needle weight to the chocolate setting.

Ivy Hoskins when I was growing up it was perfectly acceptable, albeit normal, to use a couple of pennies to weigh the needle down 🤣🤣 it was like a right of passage 🤣🤣

Im glad that she actually showed what it sounds like showing it doesn’t actually play music, unlike what five minute crafts or so yummy would do, which would be playing music over the actual sound.
The record didn't play properly as she doesn't have a decent setup. The record player is the basic Chineese copy unit they use and repeat on many systems and plonk it on, it cost pennies to produce. If she were to use a sound system with proper tone arms, a light tracking force, and a decent cartridge, it would work fine.

Since one of the main problems seems to be the softness of the chocolate, how about you use something harder like sugar or caramel?

As cool as this is I can't stop thinking about that needle. The way it scratched and dug into the chocolate. I would've died if I did that to my record player. I can't even stand it when people drop the needle on a real record the wrong way.
Those crappy novelty turntables have a cartridge that only costs like $5-$6 to replace the stylus on so it's no big deal.
If it would've been one of the slightly nicer entry level models with an ATN3600 head that costs $20 a pop for new styli then I would've cringed more.

It’s a Crosley Cruiser so the scratching and digging was probably just the terrible anti-skate. Not a record player really worth caring about.
I think that second one might've worked if you were using a turntable with a lighter tracking force.
This video showed up in my feed and I have to say, cool stuff! I actually run a record label and this is something I would really like to experiment in the future - future collab? Anything possible! For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t expect this to work with an LP as I’d doubt the mold itself or the chocolate can resolve enough fine detail to make this work (not to mention old thrift LPs are rather filthy and nobody wants to eat what’s on those records haha)
However your chances of success should go up exponentially if you use a loud 45, or even better yet, an old 78. And if you were making a record specifically for this purpose you would have the benefit of creating a mold from the original metal parts rather than molding from a pressed disc, or maybe even casting the chocolate itself using the original metal parts (if this is food safe, no idea, they are made of silver and nickel)
The grooves on a 45rpm single tend to be cut with greater excursion and thus spaced apart wider/deeper. You also get the benefit of using less chocolate by making a smaller record! 78rpm records are even wider than this as they are similarly cut loud and deep but they also pre-date the microgroove. So not only are the grooves spaced apart wider but the groove itself is more than 3 times wider as well.
Your choice of music may also have something to do with it. You chose Chariots of Fire! That LP was cut using 80’s technology (designed to cram the grooves as close together as possible) and is a very quiet/ambient track to begin with so there isn’t much groove excursion at all :)

Actually the Chariots soundtrack is very dynamic and gets extremely loud in some sections. But I agree she’d probably have better luck trying to copy a 7” 45rpm single.

Right. The whole video I was thinking about my old record player and cringing. The way it scratched and dug into the chocolate. That poor needle. My uncle would've killed just for letting the needle come in contact with chocolate let alone allowing it to dig in and scratch like that.

I was once recording a record to tape for my walkman (yes I;m that old) and there was street works being done, you know jackhammer and all and the needle on therecord picked that tremor up and you can hear it in the tape ;-) i like the idea, shame it didn;t work

Well, nowadays 10 year olds are getting into the hobby which is pretty strange to me, but I would think they would be quicker to take a bite out of it rather than play it.

This is probably one of the coolest chocolate videos yet. a record made from Chocolate! it would have been amazing if it had worked. I love watching your videos, and I've actually started making Chocolates from watching you work. next year, I hope to make my own maraschino cherries in a brandy and make them into Cordial Chocolate covered Cherries. yum!
