my family has always used pickles for teething, you get the combo of funny faces from the taste, the pickle juice & cold tends to numb the sore spots, and the pickle skin is nearly impossible for them to bite though so you rarely have to worry about them biting off a piece.
What about adding a little bit of coconut oil to the boiled sugar to make vegan caramel? It would cut the boring sugar taste while adding a little mouth feel... @DaveStraya can you please ask Ann to try it? Also, Straya, love it 😄 🇦🇺
Honestly, they are so brave. They know there is a chance of eating something that tastes horrible or has a horrendous texture, or both. But they still do it. They deserve a medal.
sometimes it feels like Dave made some Faustian bargain to have years of you making delicious things and now he's settling some sinister debt by eating these horrors
I like that you explained why some of the unappetising videos were necessary because the woman has IBS. That actually helped me understand why she did it that way.
I'm following a girl with multiple food allergies, she can eat only very limited amount of food. she's trying to recreate some meals from time before her syndrome developed from the limited ingredients and it might also look terrible, but she's mainly sharing her success and fails and people commenting around are giving nice advices how to fix the fails...
It's still one of those things where you can do better with the same ingredients. Though I do genuinely believe the eggshell thing is clickbait to the utmost degree.
@@zuzanalehotska Courtney Stultz is a contributor for Taste of Home who had a long battle with allergies and diet restrictions. She had some really good recipes.
Yeah with so many recipe videos created to intentionally be rage inducing in order to drive engagement, I'm glad the creator's intentions were clarified so as to hopefully avoid a whole bunch of ppl showing up in the comments to dunk on her.
@@zuzanalehotska I follow her too. Only about 15 foods are safe for her, right? She was the one who introduced me to foxnuts. The egg shell lady's videos are 100% just rage/engagement bait, and I don't support that kind of content. I'll follow the Hawaiian Japanese-American dietitian with IBS. She does so much good for both IBS sufferers and conventional eaters, and she doesn't use rage bait. Totally blanked on the dietitian's name, but I just remembered: Kylie Sakaida. Check her out. Her videos really changed my thoughts on food.
Ann thanks to your debunking videos I was able to stop a bunch of my Grade 3 students here in Aus from attempting to microwave eggs or try to make the melted sugar fruit at home. They had NO IDEA how dangerous it could be and assumed that because it worked on TikTok, it would be fine. It was actually scary how many were going to try these without them or their families knowing the dangers.
@@becp488 Yes, we could grow up without dangerous challenges, happy slapping and whatnot. Of course we had crazes and fashions, but it didn't change every day. There weren't influencers selling 6-step beauty routines to 10-year olds, and there was far less disinformation. We also could be edgy teens without it staying on the internet forever. Social media are a mixed blessing, especially for kids and teens. I'm happy that Ann is looking out for today's kids and their parents!
watching the Reardon kids growing up like a long-distance aunty is such an experience (bearing in mind that I'm probably the same age as them, and basically watched the videos over the years growing up). The boys are trying so hard to be respectful as they eat the weird stuff people ask Anne to recreate, while Dave's way past that and is super honest about the taste. The boys are like "hmm, smells like food, interesting flavour, not something I would eat normally, but you know if it floats your boat..." and Dave's like "nope, no, that's gross, this is not food, this is abomination".
If she wanted to be a good scientist she would have had people try the olive oil and maple concoction on ice cream, as was the point of the recipe, not on its own. Olive oil is a different type of fat than what is in ice cream. People DO put olive oil on ice cream because it changes the texture. Adding a little mint or pistachio or tahini or saffron after the oil is a perfectly legitimate way of still providing a contrast. Yes, you can also make it sweet with maple syrup or honey. You can order this for $50 in high-end restaurants. It's a more savory version of dessert to finish the meal and makes it closer to a cheese dish than a double-chocolate oreo cookie monstrosity. It's not 'wrong' it's just different and trying it without the ice cream misses the point. And it skews the story. You might as well get someone to try a spoonful of wasabi and then when they don't like it claim it has no place in sushi.
@verity3616 the point wasn't "does olive oil work on icecream" it was "is olive oil added to maple syrup the same as a caramel sauce" which doesn't need the icrecream to test.
@@casteanpreswyn7528 No, that is not the point. They specifically call the 'sauce' they are pouring over a substitute for caramel, which it would be in haute cuisine. I don't doubt that the teenager fools on tiktok are poor salespeople for these trends, but Ann is nowhere near the honest and thorough scientist she pretends to be. She also uses marketing gimmicks and unfair or disproportionate tests to get the results she wants. She's done it with other flavors, other recipes, and with other product challenges. It's a cutesy gimmick to use her own family as the tasters, but even that is an enormous bias. She excuses her poor science by saying she makes these videos family friendly, but then excuses her more bitchy and provocative behavior by pretending she's a thorough scientist. She isn't either. She's just another person making ad revenue.
All the information about IBS was really interesting. I never knew it wasn't considered a defined disease. Some people would sit around and mock people for weird recipes but you took the time to explain why someone might need to cook without certain food.
the fact it's not defined is the reason why I'm not on treatment for it anymore, hospitals just can't really do much besides recommend diets or give meds to deal with symptoms temporarily. Living with it for two decades now, I've mostly just accepted that I will be in pain no matter what and just eat anything I want (except dairy, lactose intolerance hurts too much)
@@cutsleeve117I was diagnosed with IBS when I was around 16 although I had symptoms from as young as 8. I tried all the IBS diets and never worked for me. I cannot eat nuts or spices or anything high in fibre (like lentils) or I’ll be living in the bathroom in pain. That’s just to name a few. I still fear travelling and going out places and always have to make sure I’m near a bathroom and have a ibs kit in my bag at all times. (Spare underwear, wet wipes and toilet roll, buscopan, immodium etc). It’s exhausting but not much I can do about it apart from get on with life
My mother's IBS ended up being caused by, of all things, arthritis. It turns out that arthritis can cause a sensitivity to certain foods, particularly complex sugars.
IBS is definitely a defined disease. Im an immunobiologist and we can literally see IBS in the intestinal wall because its thicker and looks different when inflammed. Its a very bad disease, but sadly we dont really know yet how it works or can be properly cured. So thats the part thats undefined.
Yeah I noticed that her ingredients were correct for real recipes but her technique was wildly off base. Perhaps her videos are meant to be parody and people haven't caught on.
My first question was "...so what, you haven't explained why them being alive is a good thing in the first place" You could just as well say "chicken breasts contain live bacteria, contact with intense heat kills them, therefore the best way to consume chicken is raw".
Also, how much contact is the metal having with the honey? Scooping honey with a spoon, most of the honey wouldn't know what the spoon is made from at all.
As someone with severe IBS, most folks (one study found 76% of IBS sufferers) will see a huge benefit from following low fodmap recipes rather than just making low ingredient odd potions. Because its so newly discovered, not many people know about Fodmap intolerances even a lot of IBS sufferers! Would be really cool to see an episode covering low fodmap cooking, especially because you're in Australia, you could visit Monash university which is doing most of the research on it!
That would be really great to see! I'm on a low FODMAP diet after a massive internal haemorrhage and I can't seem to reintroduce anything successfully. It makes it really hard to live when you can only eat tiny amounts of a very select group of foods.
Sufferred from diverticulitis for years. Low fibre lead constipation lead to flare lead to "low fibre diet". Then a doctor suggested fodmap. I lasted 4 days but it really helped. I dont have any known allergies so reintroduce was fine but so much better than previous cycle.
I often wonder if it's not a new thing due to all the processed food, packaging and even how some grow plants and raise animals for food. When I was young no one had nut allergies, lactose intolerances, gluten intolerances, IBS etc. So if they existed, were very rare. I think modern food production has a lot to answer for even though Australia does it better than others.
personally I had to go keto due to a range of health issues that I have which includes IBS but I started on a low FODMAP diet first so a video on it would be awesome
@@tkps Lactose *tolerance* (lactase persistence) is a result of gene mutation in humans that originated (at least) 2000 years ago, and isn't widely present in many populations of the world. The more likely explanation is that all these things you mentioned have either always existed, or have existed for a very long time, but the symptoms were attributed to other illnesses due to lack of research, or just not talked about. With something like IBS it's pretty understandable why people haven't felt comfortable openly discussing their symptoms. I knew people growing up who'd always brush off their symptoms like bloating or nausea as part of their menstrual cycles or catching some kind of stomach bug, but when they found out I also had IBS they felt comfortable telling me they had it too and just didn't like to talk about it.
As a partially deaf person I appreciate subtitles, but wondered if I could volunteer myself to improve them a bit for legibility? Sometimes they can be hard to follow, and I would be happy to help in order for people with more profound levels of deafness have better access to your videos (especially the debunking ones). I studied biology at degree level and there are a LOT of spelling errors of things like amylase. Please let me know if I can help! Thank you for all you do
I'm very hard of hearing too (and, coincidentally, also have a biology degree :D). I wear hearing aids but still depend on captions a lot, and I second this. In addition to the issues mentioned above, I'm also often confused by the way the text just sort of runs together and isn't timed properly, so that it's hard to understand who's saying what. I'm always an advocate of improving subtitles/captioning in any way possible, and I appreciate you offering to help!
It's very weird too, how in this video the subtitles are a lot harder to follow then on her previous videos. I don't like accusing people, but I feel like she might've used AI for the captions this time (given that she's occasionally used AI-generated imagery before)? Because whenever Dave does the subtitles, they're a lot more coherent, legible, and have better spelling and grammar. 🤷♀ RUclips actually used to let people caption creator's videos for them with community captions, but they unfortunately removed them so it's much more of a hassle now to involve volunteers 😭
After completely failing to find any correlation between my food intake and my IBS flares, I finally figured out that my IBS is primarily triggered by stress. 🤦♀️
For me it was a gluten allergy! I found out because a RUclipsr had it and the same weird skin rash, all that went away with a new diet. Quite a weird and broad symptom that is pretty shitty
i feel like psychosomatic symptoms are often discarded as "fake" and "imagining it" but really they're just as real as any other reason for flareups, the symptoms are real and the pain/discomfort is real.
I can understand the weird ingredients now, but still WHY the whole apple and eggs? Cutting up an apple or cracking the egg doesn't change the composition or nutritional value?
Yes, one would have thought that with IBS the last thing you want is the apple seeds and hard woody bits around the core. It's normal to avoid heavy roughage in food if you have IBS, although blitzing everything is a good idea.
It definitely seems like clixkbait tbh. I know for a fact by blender can't blend a whole apple. Also sugar free applesauce is right there if you want to make it more accessible
15:06 I didn’t expect to learn the semantic difference between disease and syndrome but I’m glad I did!! I have chronic fatigue syndrome (funnily enough irritable bowel issues come as a secondary thing with it) and it’s almost famous at this point for being a diagnosis of exclusion because just as you said with syndromes, it’s a group of symptoms but doesn’t test positive for any known disease (that we have a test for). Absolutely frustrating to have but interesting to learn that the reason it is is because it’s currently a syndrome not a disease!! Cool!!
Yeah, I didn’t realize there was a difference either and I’m diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (and gastro issues are common with this condition too!). Like your CFS, my form of EDS doesn’t have specific testing and diagnosing it is usually done on a basis of exclusion, although some other forms of the condition do have specific identifiable genetic markers.
I totally understand. I’ve been bad with my stomach for years. At one point they said it’s just ibs, we can’t do anything .But luckily I was admitted to hospital & they done another colonoscopy. Then I found out it was inflammatory bowl disease/ulcerative colitis! Honestly, I think some doctors, just say ibs because they don’t want to do test. Especially in England, so keep pushing to get your answers ❤️
I just want to thank you for speaking so kindly about IBS. Too many people dismiss people with IBS's symptoms and they are forced to "just power through it". Additionally, thank you for speaking about how more research needs to be done so that people with IBS can get a diagnosis of a recognized condition. I see too many medical aid/ insurance companies not willing to cover treatment/ doctor's and specialist's visits for IBS, probably because it is, like you said, not a disease and just a syndrome. You are a wealth of information and we appreciate your videos very much.
i used to have stress tummyaches and such as a kid and god those prolonged trips to the can were so painful sometimes. like i only had those as a kid but someone i know w ibs described their own experience as "the gutmelts" and man, i wanna punch anyone so dismissive for such needless suffering. and my case isnt that bad even!!
I was diagnosed with IBS in my teens, nearly ten years later I was also diagnosed with a genetic disorder (EDS). Turns out a lot of symptoms of IBS can also mimic problems caused by EDS to your digestive system, which leaves me in the position of not knowing if it's just my genetic disorder or if I actually do have both. So I definitely support more research into IBS.
I bake eggshells in the oven until brown then grind then grind them in my coffee grinder, they turn to powder after being baked. Then i sprinkle them in my garden for the tomato plants.
@@hwiley8141 If you don't bake them then they attract pests. I don't wash them because I"m not consuming them. Also once baked, my coffee grinder will reduce them to powder in seconds because they are brittle. I prefer to powder them before adding to garden because they break down quicker. Left in pieces, the shells will take years to break down.
I do something similar, except I put it in my chooks feed. Great way of recycling nutrients and making sure the girls have enough calcium to not lay soft shelled eggs! You can also soak stale bread in skim milk to boost chicken calcium levels too
Your IBS info was helpful.I have it and have puzzled over why sometimes a food triggered an episode while other times it's fine. I had never heard that seasonal allergies could contribute to triggering an episode of IBS.
I had never heard that either! I'm going to tell my mom about it - she has IBS and we live in an area that experiences a lot of pollen and other seasonal allergens. Sometimes a food that is Usually Good will suddenly cause a flare-up. Could be the pollen!
I've heard that there can be a link between which pollens you're allergic to and what fruits/grains you should be avoiding. I was told this by a fellow patient in the waiting room of an allergy clinic, and the doctor said it wasn't applicable in my case, so I don't know how common/accurate that is, but definitely worth trying to get an appointment with a proper immunology/allergy clinic if you can to narrow these things down.
I was diagnosed with IBS after gallbladder surgery and nothing helped, no diets or therapy etc. After 10 years of suffering, I saw another specialist and was diagnosed with Bile Acid Malabsorption. Started on medication and it has been LIFE CHANGING!!!!!
At this point, someone saying "trust me" - like the lady from those short "healthy" recipe videos - makes me a lot more suspicious of what they're saying. 😂
Ann, you are such a class act. You could have made fun of this woman's recipes, but not only did you not do that, you explained why she has these modified recipes, along with educating about IBS. If only more creators were as classy and kind as you. I really just want to say how much I appreciate everything you do to make the internet a safer, kinder place. Truly, thank you.
I really appreciate you going into more detail about IBS, particularly how it can stem from other conditions. I have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, which, put very very simply, makes me allergic to a wide variety of things, often randomly and inconsistently. It was originally diagnosed as IBS until I presented skin allergies, but my food intolerances behave exactly the same as IBS. It feels good to see trusted people with as much of a following as you have bring some light to conditions that most people know little to nothing about
I also have MCAS and I really wish more people know about it, I wouldn't be surprised if many with IBS have it and would benefit from antihistamines that target the receptors in the stomach!
Oooo I like making chocolate mousse with a can of dense coconut cream (doesn't slosh when you shake it) chilled in the fridge then mixed with cocoa powder and some powdered sugar!
Oh no! Ann's on to us, crew! Debunking requests just for the reactions! My favorite reaction this video: *spits* "Loved it." *Charming smile* What I deeply love is that you went further to talk about why the recipes on that one channel weren't just troll videos, but rather someone looking to share recipes necessary for her life and diet. ❤
The first time my mom and I tried making our own caramel, we managed to melt a spatula. If the recipe says 'use a wooden spoon', there's probably a good reason for it! We use silcone spatulas for caramel now, which has a much higher melting point than sugar does.
This is also a good argument for not buying plastic utensils in the first place. If you don't buy tools that can melt, they'll never surprise you by melting.
my mom had a spaghetti strainer or something made of plastic once. accidentally set it down on a hot surface and it melted in the most disturbing way, the melted plastic pushed up through the holes of the strainer, creating these weird round projections on the inside of the strainer. was only mildly melted though so she kept using it for a long while after. every time I saw it I wanted to clean out the melted bits with a knife or something.
Your are probably only RUclipsr who I respect the most Ann, you are not only a content creator but also an responsibile individual who knows her responsibility well and never afraid to rightfully show to her audience. ❤❤ Lot's of love All the way From India 🇮🇳

I have IBS, thankfully got a good recommendation for a dietician, tried a FODMAP exlcusion diet then reintroduced different foods to work out what triggered problems. Still have flare-ups every now and then but cooking for myself has made things in general a lot better, since I know what I've put in.
Same here, and I've been getting along a lot better after finding the culprit foods and eliminating them. My family actually likes the FODMAP seasoning/sauce mixes I make better because they're not overwhelmingly flour, garlic salt and onion powder. They have more of a flavor profile.
Eggs are a major allergen. In certain countries, they would be mandated by law to state on the packaging that egg ingredients were used. Yes, it's unlikely the shell is the part someone is allergic to, but better safe than dead of anaphylaxis. So it would be calcium (egg source) or something. And it's pretty easy to work out from there.
In the USA it would probably get a license plate name. There are a few something like E34H1 or whatever. They are egg and dairy derivatives. Had to download an app the read nutrition labels to stop accidently eating allergens. 😑
eggshells are made of calcium carbonate and you see calcium carbonate as an ingredient sometimes. i've seen it in cream of wheat and slim fast in the US. as for whether that particular calcium carbonate is ultimately sourced from eggshells, who knows? (and yes, it is detectably gritty in the cream of wheat)
I absolutely love how for EVERY video, you do all the research needed for it to be accurate instead of spouting about something that may be nowhere near the truth. I truly appreciate it.
The eggshell brownies made me flinch so hard I almost fell out of my chair. Thanks for the little chat about IBS. It's a nightmare and I never knew that seasonal or environmental factors can aggravate it as well as foods! Thank you for that information, I think it's gonna help!
@@HowToCookThat Thanks for the advice! I have been tested for allergies before but it was easily twenty years ago now so I should definitely get it redone.
for the calcium and eggshells: my parents had to do that when my mom was pregnant with my oldest sister. They lived in Cuba at the time and it was the time after the soviet union fell apart aka "el Período especial" when food got tight. Milk had already been something only kids and pregnant women got beforehand but it was extra hard during that time. And calcium deficiency during pregnancy is no joke and can lead to premature birth. So they'd grind the eggshells down with a bowl and mortar and mix it into her food and jump through many other hoops to ensure my big sister got everything she needed. My mom was unfortunately still underweight for a pregnant woman. This was a big reason for why my parents immigrated. They wanted to have kids but not like that. What I am trying to say is that when u are grinding egg shells for calcium it is generaly the kind of situation where u do not have access to dairy or supplements. It is not a pointless thing but instead a wonderful aspect of eggs that can be used in very shitty situations. But it is for very specific situations and not for weird crunchy grainless brownies. IBS sucks but there are easier options to go grainless than eggshells.
To my trained pastry chef's eye it looked like Dutch processed cocoa powder (it looks so dark, in fact, that it might be a blend of Dutch processed and black cocoa powder which is superior in terms of flavorfulness), which isn't nearly as bitter as the "natural" kind.
Okay, so happy you tried LilSippers new recipes, because I've followed her for years (I also have IBS), but I've seen all three of those new recipes and thought 'that's a nope from me!' was wondering if ANYONE would try them haha
that lady is out of her MIND. she posted a picture of her refrigerator and it had like three things in it. plus she adds rage-bait twists to the videos she posts (egg shells in the brownies) simply for engagement. weird.
@@will9703 Ann gave the woman the benefit of the doubt but I was also thinking the same thing, which is honestly a shame. Those with IBS might find her videos and try these things themselves, only to end up feeling worse, all because someone wanted to weaponize their illness to earn clicks.
Dude! It's not even funny if someone believes that! A friend of mine was CONVINCED that fibers from clothing were tiny worms trying to drill into his skin. I couldnt convince him that the reason they "wiggled" was simply air currents and static electricity. That was a really weird few months. Your post is literally only the second time Ive heard someone say that. I know you are joking and its great sarcasm, but it sure did trigger that memory of someone believing exactly that!

DO NOT include eggshells in your food. I lost a tooth once because a piece of eggshell stuck between and sliced my gum. Unless you grind them into very thin powder (which blender WON'T do) - DON'T do that.
Totally. But also as someone who works at an egg farm.. even post-wash, I cannot recommend avoiding eggshells enough. They're absolutely disgusting and a lot of people don't think about what they look like right after being laid. Many of the eggs have feathers stuck to them, grain from the chicken food, dust from the cages, chicken sh*t stuck on them, egg white or yolk stuck to them, blood from the chickens, random oil from machinery, among other (grosser) things. The latter four usually get thrown out unless they could reasonably be sprayed off with a spritz of water when they get sent to the factory. And that spritz of water doesn't do much in terms of sanitation, at least where I live, though maybe Australia has different standards. Even what Ann did with washing them would still make me feel uneasy, just having seen what eggs look like when they're farm fresh. Even if they look clean coming home, they're not clean. There's all sorts of bacterias and I'm not sure washing them off with water like she did would help. So.. yeah just avoid putting the shells in food. And yeah, I barely eat eggs (unless in something like cake) these days. And I make certain there's no shell in that stuff.
hi ann, could u possibly make a video on what goes into the job of a food scientist? it seems pretty interesting to me, and a possibly career path and i want to know what i am getting myself into. i have been supporting for years now and am soon graduating, so thank you for the inspiration:)
That woman with the two- and three-ingredient foods... never shows herself eating the stuff. I think she makes them hoping others will make it, eat them and be disgusted. Basically, I think she is "trolling" people.
I used to follow her on Instagram. She puts out real recipes, has a coon boom and products. Her RUclips videos do seem odd though. (I say used to because I don't use it anymore). The scrambled egg pudding is easy and delicious.
Yeah some of the recipes there I've heard before but the techniques she's using is entirely wrong. Like you do actually prepare the food, and then there's these special cooking in preparation techniques to actually make them good products at the end and she's doing none of that part.
Dear Ann, I hope you read this comment or at least see this comment, This video may of just helped figure out my gut issue. I have just been watching some of your other videos and I am constantly amazed by your skill and knowledge abilities by not simply debunking videos on RUclips but, also by finding and fixing these failed projects. Luckily for me I can still handle most food, like I’m fine with dairy it makes me nauseous but that’s it, I am however weak to spicy food. That makes my stomach scream in agony
A friend of ours from many years ago had IBS. His wife was a wonderful Southern cook, and I don't think there was any effort from either to adjust his diet. They just lived with it.
@@cloudbasedbear the Daiya & Violife brands make very good cheese substitutes (daiya passes the grilled cheese test for me!) & the Follow You Heart brand makes amazing sour cream & cream cheese substitutes. Annie's makes a vegan mac & cheese that's really good (i get it on amazon). also Ben & Jerry's makes dairy-free pints of some of their flavors & they're just as good as the dairy versions source: used to love dairy, ended up lactose intolerant after having my appendix removed as a kid. those brands are as close to the real thing as I've found 👍
It sort of reminded me of a Dutch Baby (dutch pancake? i've heard a bunch of names for it) which is mostly egg. a little bit of flour, little bit of butter, maybe baking soda? vanilla? i dont remember the recipe off hand. But I used to make them to use up a bunch of eggs lol. Its also very mild in flavor, I would put maple syrup on top and eat it like a pancake. And honestly a chocolate version doesnt sound half bad. I would definitely skip on the eggshells though XD
I actually seen a similar recipe on the channel Josh & Momma last week where Momma used boiled eggs instead of scrambled, coconut cream instead of milk and white sugar instead of honey. Based on recipes I seen (one using scrambled eggs instead of boiled) if you eat it right away you will taste the egg taste, but leaving it to rest in the fridge for a period of time (recipes usually recommend overnight) it goes away. In Momma's video it tasted fishy according to her sister and had a gritty texture suggesting it wasn't blending smooth so it still contained small pieces of egg affecting the flavour. She got the recipe from Emmymade who herself based it off testing a keto recipe, of hers Emmy said there was no egg flavour and while it tasted good the coconut flavour was too strong for her liking and if she made it again would likely use dairy milk and also add melted chocolate. Honestly looks like an interesting method for a high protein and low carb (if you reduce or omit the sugar or use a zero carb sweetener as most recipes suggest) alternative to a normal pudding or mouse.
No, I am familiar with lilsipper, the creator of that video. I think she has a mental illness. Her recipes are.... let's just say this one is a classic
I’m really grateful to you for raising awareness of how limiting digestive issues can be for sufferers. I’m living a nightmare with this right now (not IBS but digestive disfunction + allergies) and it’s a balm to hear such a sympathetic take.
We do mix maple syrup and olive oil in Canada but it's for making maple syrup vinaigrettes, and if you refrigerate maple syrup the texture becomes more like caramel than that Olive Oil mix!
What a gift this woman is to the internet. I'm so impressed that she took the time to educate the public re ibs in case people need more care and did it very well...just because it was in the profile of someone who's recipe she tried/kind debunked. But gave nuanced context! Well done. You should be so proud of what you offer here.
About the vegan alternative for the caramel: I just use vegan creme and margarine instead of cream and butter, and I'll admit that it's a lazy way of doing vegan food (just replacing stuff), it does indeed yield a great caramel sauce. Looks like normal caramel sauce, tastes like normal caramel sauce.
I love how you went to this person's channel and found out why is makes this (in our eyes) weird recipes. And then explained ibs to us. You are so sweet😊. ( your men might disagree hahaha but luckily you ended with something nice for them 😊)

This is the best explanation I've ever heard of IBS. Thanks so much, I have it, and a million doctors have never been able to say it so clearly. At least not in the US.
Sympathies to the creator with IBS (I also have digestive issues) but... My reaction to the eggshell in the brownies was like Walter White handcuffed in the car.
That eggshell brownie had to be rage bait to drive engagement. I've made a very simple brownie recipe similar to that one, and it doesn't need the egg shells to work. Can't imagine that adds anything.
She might not care? I guess it's less common than I thought, but I'm not that bothered by the crunch as long as I'm expecting it. I just associate it with failure, as eggshell isn't in any recipe I plan on cooking.
Love how you explain IBS in a compact way that's very easy to understand! Thank you, I'll link this the next time I need to explain it ❤ It's always a struggle to explain my dietary restrictions to someone who maybe has another friend/family member with IBS, since most don't understand the products triggering symptoms vary greatly between individuals. What works for their friend/family member may not apply to me, and vice versa.
Some people think that ingredients like honey and maple syrup are healthier than processed white sugar. The difference is not zero, but it isn't remotely significant. If you want to eat less sugar, the only way is to eat less sugar. And maple syrup instead of honey is because some vegans don't consider honey to be vegan. I think you could do a caramel substitute with maple syrup by doing a burnt honey syrup but with maple syrup?
Thank you so much for including an explanation of IBS and the context around the recipes. I continue to love this channel for these thoughtful insights!
@@HowToCookThat you could turn the emulsion into a nice vinaigrette with a few extra ingredients. I love a simple drizzle of maple syrup on vanilla ice cream. Why add the oil? It’s not necessary. If she wanted something that was a bit more thick and resembling caramel, she could melt a small amount of the ice cream and mix the maple syrup into it to make it more thick. The melted ice cream emulsifies with the maple syrup quite nicely…..at least it always works out that way in my ice cream bowl while I’m eating it.

I've had IBS since I was 7 so I very much know what it's like and how frustrating it can be, especially to get a diagnosis 😣 Sending my love to anyone else having to live with it 💐🫶🏼
You have my sympathy. I also have IBS that gets triggered by polycystic ovarian syndrome and was also set off by some of my medications. The eggshell thing would definitely have me in the bathroom wondering what higher power I angered.
As someone with IBS, I can't understand how she could eat that egg pudding! It would kill me lol. Also, your assessment of IBS is so correct, and it is VERY frustrating having something that they do not know the cause of!
As a fellow IBS sufferer, one of the most obnoxious things for me is dairy. Some days it's totally fine, maybe a little bloated, and other days 20-40 minutes after eating it I'm in the bathroom wishing for a swift end. 😅 It's from one week or even one day to the next, too, so environmental factors are less likely. Such a "fun" syndrome.
@@guntotingmonk I can understand the food causing you problems.. Even though I haven't had any specific issues with dairy myself.. but isn't I just hell sometimes??
This is why it’s so great that Ann explains - I had no idea it was rubbish! I mean, cells are ‘alive’ so why not enzymes? Unless you’re taught, and remember, you don’t know. Maybe I learnt about enzymes back in high school, and just forgot, or was never taught it at all? Either way I’m grateful to Ann for her work debunking these claims.
It reminds me of the time I went to Teavana, and the sales girl told me I shouldn't microwave water to make tea, because the microwave would denature the water. I didn't bother to correct her, because I'm sure she was just reading a corporate sales script, but I did decline to buy the overpriced kettle she was selling.

I was told it was IBS, turns out it isn’t - my stomach doesn’t work properly! It was gastroparesis. Aka it takes a normal stomach 4 hours to empty and I still have food in my stomach over 13 hours later 😅 no wonder I get so sick
I was also told I had IBS with no further testing being ordered. Turns out it was celiac disease! It's frustrating enough to wade through to get a diagnosis, I can't imagine still not knowing what's causing problems and having to trial and error constantly with food
I have Ulcertaive Colitis which is like IBS but more than just in the stomach. I would not put shells in my blender. Her recipes seem less for IBS and more for attention.
She's a pro-ED account hiding behind illness. It's well documented, there's a while subreddit r/LilSipper where you can see she also pushes pseudoscience and is a misogynist married to a qanon guy
Also the scrambled egg pudding had all the same ingredients normal stovetop pudding (custard) uses, she just cooked the eggs first so she could blend it together, instead of cooking a pudding on the stove like normal. That's not dietary, that's just a method choice for virality. Not even like "oh I'm in a college dorm and have no stove and only a blender", since she has a stove to scramble eggs. I tried it and pre cooking the eggs like that just makes it gritty af, it's nasty. She didn't replace any normal pudding ingredients except using honey instead of sugar which still works in normal pudding. She even used regular milk so it wasn't like dairy free or anything. And even dairy free pudding works on the stove, you can cook a chocolate custard/pudding with vegan milks, or even water (it would taste more like mousse without something creamy added though). All you need is a liquid to warm up and temper the eggs into so they thicken the pudding.
@@-desertpackrat I thought the exact same thing…. That is a gross and cheap way to make custard … The whole point of custard pudding is to NOT scramble the eggs… All that lady did was make a crappy custard … nothing more

As someone with IBS, thank you so much for including the information about it in this video; it's really extremely stressful, when you don't even know exactly what will set it off. And it was really fun seeing everyone trying the disaster recipes from this video 😂 Much love from Greece ❤
Thanks for giving such a well-constructed explanation on IBS!! All my life I have struggled with people with people either not understanding or even believing some of my symptoms when eating "normal" foods. Sometimes a food that has been fine for years suddenly isn't and my diet is extremely limited already, I'm extremely thin and it's a constant struggle against my own body and mind.
Even smart people can make mistakes. I've seen an otherwise intelligent adult eat a spoonfull of bubbling soup and then exclaim how hot it is in surprise.
@@CowCommando Never ask me how many absent-minded burns I've gotten in the kitchen in the last 58 years. :D I have made microwaved scrambled eggs and lived, though. But you have to take 'em out of the shell and NOT just turn on the heat for 10 minutes and walk away.
Taught to cook sure but more importantly taught to not listen to these random videos and immediately run out to try it. Just because you saw it on the internet doesn't mean it's true.
Thank you for the ibs love and support. It is extremely difficult to live with and is flared up particularly by high stress situations. I feel tired constantly because I don’t get enough nutrition from the food I eat because my gut doesn’t work properly. My symptoms have gotten steadily worse over the 15 years I’ve had this and I’ve restricted my diet so heavily and I have a lot of anxiety around eating foods that have previously been ok but all of a sudden cause a flare up. I have now seen a consultant that has given me a permanent medication I take everyday, it hasn’t exactly fixed me as I still experience flare ups and ungodly pain, but at least it passes quicker.
That still classifies as a burn, particularly third degree burn as it destroyed the whole skin layer and reached muscles. And yes, those are basically always awful.

It's very weird too, how in this video the subtitles are a lot harder to follow then on her previous videos.
I just want to thank you for speaking so kindly about IBS. Too many people dismiss people with IBS's symptoms and they are forced to "just power through it". Additionally, thank you for speaking about how more research needs to be done so that people with IBS can get a diagnosis of a recognized condition. I was diagnosed with IBS in my teens, nearly ten years later I was also diagnosed with a genetic disorder (EDS).
You could have MCAS or histamine intolerance.
Same boat here! I've pretty much resigned myself to a new "normal". No matter how much I experimented with food, no improvements.
I didn't know it either! I'm allergic to practically everything, so maybe that would explain some of my unexplained episodes.

They would not put "eggshells" on the ingredients list. They would put "natural calcium" or something like that.

Thanks for the little chat about IBS. It's a nightmare and I never knew that seasonal or environmental factors can aggravate it as well as foods! Thank you for that information, I think it's gonna help!
There is a lot of research on this so definitely worth having some allergy tests done and chat with an immunologist.
I think the cocoa powder they used wasn't baking cocoa but cocoa drink powder which already has sugar added
Ahhh, that would explain it. Still not good, and Very misleading if so
To my trained pastry chef's eye it looked like Dutch processed cocoa powder (it looks so dark, in fact, that it might be a blend of Dutch processed and black cocoa powder which is superior in terms of flavorfulness), which isn't nearly as bitter as the "natural" kind.
No, she doesn't use anything with sugar

DO NOT include eggshells in your food. I lost a tooth once because a piece of eggshell stuck between and sliced my gum.
Unless you grind them into very thin powder (which blender WON'T do) - DON'T do that.
I mean that’s with anything that can get stuck there. Popcorn, fish, etc.. Just be aware of the risks.
Also, don't do it because it's foul and you will feel like you are eating bird grit.
I have ground eggshells to a rather fine powder, using a mortar and pestle. I started using that to prep eggshells to feed back to my hens.

The scrambled egg pudding really suprised me! I would've thought cooked eggs would have at least a slight taste in the end product
me too, but it was fine.
Eggs are really mild in flavor when scrambled, so I'm not surprised the cocoa powder overrode the flavor.
I would definitely skip on the eggshells though XD
whoops, I meant that about the 2 ingredient brownie. Didnt realize there was a second chocolate +eggs recipe in the video XD

Thank you Anne, that was a really comprehensive and compassionate depiction of IBS!
We do mix maple syrup and olive oil in Canada but it's for making maple syrup vinaigrettes, and if you refrigerate maple syrup the texture becomes more like caramel than that Olive Oil mix!
And if you want to make it creamy, you can beat it for a loooonnnnggggg time, and it turns into a ‘butter’.

Omg same, nothing is worse than biting into an eggshell. It made my skin crawl 😩
Love how you explain IBS in a compact way that's very easy to understand! Thank you, I'll link this the next time I need to explain it ❤
It's always a struggle to explain my dietary restrictions to someone who maybe has another friend/family member with IBS, since most don't understand the products triggering symptoms vary greatly between individuals. What works for their friend/family member may not apply to me, and vice versa.
Neither olive oil nor maple syrup (the real stuff, anyway) are particularly cheap. Surely it's easier to buy a can of caramel.
2:38
I have a gluten intolerant friend I have to be wary buying caramel for because a lot of it here is made with wheat starch or something
I think you could do a caramel substitute with maple syrup by doing a burnt honey syrup but with maple syrup?
as someone with ibs I appreciate your kindness and understanding so much❤❤
Thank you so much for including an explanation of IBS and the context around the recipes. I continue to love this channel for these thoughtful insights!
Omg! This Canadian is appalled! Why would you do that to maple syrup? Sacrilege!
I really did not want to waste that much to make an emulsion. I was so sad when I couldn't just use the small amount on the plate.
