our family always has several dogs in the house so we cycle through puppies fairly regularly, lol. it really is like bringing home another child - they need to be potty trained, fed the right foods, stimulated and educated and taught language, LISTENED TO. a lot of people don't know how to actually listen to their dogs to understand what the dog needs.
@@dietotaku For me it's heartbreaking when people bring home one-to-many puppies because they are cute when small and then when they grow up they treat them like they are bad and they abandon them or even puppies.
Training a dog is basically learning how to communicate with that dog. It shouldn't be a chore but it should be a happy experience for both the dog and the human. Keep the lessons short, fun and positive. Redirect when needed and keep on doing it. What you put into the dog's first 18 months will be a lot of work, but it nets a lifetime of great experiences for the entire family.
I'll add to that: always end on a good note. Make a plan for what you want to accomplish, and once you get what you wanted from the dog in that training session, end it.
Yes , exactly right, I felt that training my puppy , at all the years of seriously advanced guardian instruction , after puppy class & basic training classes 101A & was part of our deep bonding & learned communication together. We became a team that way. Not separate entities, but one.
15 minutes a day, is all animals & children can absorb & handle psychologically. After 15 minutes it's just blah blah blah in one ear out he other. You are no longer making progress, it's just wasted time and energy causing frustration.
Man I love watching pups play with eachother, they're so adorable. I can't believe Raven didn't get to experience much of that when she was a smaller pup, I feel so bad for her. I'm glad the owners are getting better and more involved with her. There should really be more education and reminders for people when it comes to getting a puppy or a pet in general...
The first couple was so sweet and decided to intervene at the right time ! Usually people just let them off when they are younger and cuter. This is what all owners should do !!!
I just taught my Corgi puppy bite inhibition by yelping at her whenever she bit too hard. She’s very gentle with her mouth now. She turned 1 in May and is a great dog 😊
Please, NO ONE COPY THIS "METHOD"! it can activate prey drive and it is "joining in" rather than being the NON reaponse needed to extinguish the behaviour.
That only works with some puppies. Other puppies are excited by the yelp and bite harder. I have raised both. The puppies who don't react to a yelp are so much harder to teach not to mouth.
Raven needed training before those teeth hurt someone. She is a very smart dog and seems to learn quickly. Elise and John are going to have a lovely dog by following Victoria's instructions. Love owners who want to help train their dog. I like the couple and clever Raven.
I certainly hope that you didn't follow the potty training advice because it's just plumb wrong! They learn within about 3 days with actual proper potty training, even in a cold environment!
@@darrenh6169for potty training, I've always taken then out every 2 hours, and offer a treat when they do potty. I use a specific treat only for that training, so they only get it when they potty outside. Works like a charm, 3-7 days depending on the dog.
can we talk about how ADORABLE Raven is tho? It's not her fault she is confused from her owners. Yet all dogs have separate personalities and respond differently to external environments. SHE IS SO CUTE omg I hope she has a better handle on things now (and idk i didn't like john too much, not my place to judge but he seemed a bit too self interested.) I LOVE RAVEN SO MUCH THO OMFG how could you not love this dog. (I am partial to rotties and dobermans tho... so im biased lol )
I have an 8 week old dobie and I'm going to use this uh oh method for good behavior around my kids and other critters. She's very mouthy, but Ive worked with her on my couch, playing with her, and anytime she bites or nips, I yell OUCH and get up off the couch, disengage the playing, and stand with mt back turned to her for about 20 seconds. The nipping and biting has greatly decreased. I think using a lead and removing her from the living room once she gets mouthy with the family is going to be a game changer, so glad I found this.
We got our rott (my avatar) and my wife's niece and husband got a pup from the same litter. We trained our rott from day one, they didn't. Two years later our rott was well behaved, friendly, and obedient, they turned their dog in because it was attacking the family and they couldn't control it. It's NOT the dog, it's ALWAYS the owners.
Don’t understand why people still get dogs especially puppies when one partner says they r not ready (John) and Elise goes with it and then blames John for not receiving help. Like he literally don’t want a dog.
That’s not necessarily what happened. He told her she could get a dog just he wasn’t gonna help out that much. As someone in this situation with my mom it’s aggravating. Because u wanna play with my dog and teach him bad ways but don’t wanna help. And if I tell u to stop playing with him then I’m the bad guy. Just bad situation frfr
I taught my four month old abused border collie to stop biting feet by a single shake from a shake can and a stern ‘no bite’ she learned in one day. She’s amazingly intelligent!!
If your partner tells you upfront that they don’t want a pet or that responsibility you need to respect that decision. If you have a pet when they meet you that’s different. If you don’t have a pet and they tell you that they don’t want a pet and you decide to get one that’s YOUR PET!!!
Lol. I have a pomeranian 9 mo old pup. His "bedroom🤗" is a giant dog size crate. He has cloth puppy pads, toys, his little blankets, a ceramic bowl for water in it. Its is refered to as Asa's bedroom 😂.
I just loved the family, the mother had such a caring and bubbly energy. The father seemed also very caring and overall a good guy, the kids were happy, beautiful family. I hope they're happy with their pets
when I decided to get a puppy I prepared myself, I actually read Victoria's Book "The Ultimate Guide to Raising a Puppy" and still I did not expect SO much work having a puppy... so its great that the family wants to start out right which lets u know u have responsible future owners here
I can say a lot of not great things about my mother, but thank goodness she introduced all of us to animals early on as a vet tech. Because I couldn't imagine being an adult and not knowing jack about owning a puppy.
My experience of raising a puppy was easy, and very fun, I'm not saying he was a greta student, or that I was a great teacher, rather that I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience, and was not tired out by it in the least. I had done a lot of research, and studied dog behaviour so it is fair to say that had a reasonable advantage over the average owner, but only because I put in the time and money beforehand. Everything did not always go smoothly, but even the bad moments (and they were not few and far between) were an opportunity rather than a burden. An opportunity because it was mutual teaching, I was learning from him, while I trained him.
"I'm the one who takes her out. I'm the one who feeds her." You're the one who wanted her, so she's your responsibility. You can't complain about not having help in this case.
She is wonderful with Raven and her husband is learning how awesome dogs are too….nothing better than a dog. They are more loyal than ppl. And the family …there is nothing that teaches your kids more about caring and responsibility than a dog….I hope they many years to love their dogs… dogs naturally protect you and warn if there is a fire or other danger…..dogs are the best ! I have 4 !
I’m just taking aback how lightly people take getting a dog. A puppy is like a baby it needs a lot of time. The first weeks with mine were just evolving around him. Potty training, we were out eight to ten times in the day and every three hours doing the night. He was potty trained by week five with little accidents. And training a puppy is also a huge thing to do. I don’t say I did everything right by far I didn’t but he just turned two and he is in training as a Therapie dog. Of course we have problems and had them of course but we mostly enjoyed our puppy time together. I would wish for people to think more about what it means to get a dog. You can get a lot of joy but it is work, a lot of work. So just get a dog if you ready to but the work in.
I'm so happy the family had decided to ask a dog trainer before getting a puppy so they can understand how to properly care for a puppy! I find that most people look at dogs and go "oh it's cute, lets get it!" And don't actually understand the proper way to care for them
this couple wanted the best for their dog, i can tell. the thing is that if you keep the dog in the cage almost the whole day, when its time to let her out, its like all that energy burst out, and all the dog was focused on was playing and letting all that energy out.
The first couple was not ready for a puppy. If he told her he did not want one, why would she not believe him (symptom of problems in their relationship)? They have done zero training, not even bothering to housebreak Raven properly.
Apart from the training in the show, it's nice to see that they clearly have tried working with Raven in how well she follows the commands she has learned. I was expecting her to ignore Elise when she called her.
My partner and I have had six dogs over 40 years, and I worked for a pet supply chain which held training classes for most of those years. It is not like I don't understand how much work is involved in having and training a dog. I do. Our last dogs, a pair of dachshund/spaniel cross rescue dogs, died about three years ago, at the ages of fifteen and sixteen, of old age. I really miss having a dog and feel very lonely without one, but I am almost 80 years old, and I don't know if I can provide what a dog would need. I used to work for a cat rescue, but developed an allergy to cats, and I have had a cockatiel, but don't know if it would be fair to get a cockatiel at my age either, since they live fifteen or twenty years. We would get an older adult dog, maybe around 8 years or so, and a smaller dog, under 25 pounds, which is the size limit in our senior housing community. I am trying to decide if it would be fair to a dog to get one, or an older bonded pair so they would have company of their own species, which I think is important for a dog. I am feeling depressed not having a dog, but I don't want to get a dog for selfish reasons if I can't provide all the dog would need.
I think it depends whether you have a good support system - if there's a way for You to arrange someone to take care of the dog in case you are unable to for a period of time, or in case something happens? Would friends in community help walking them if you caught a nasty cold? Younger people ought to have contingency plans as well but as we age or fall ill it becomes more important. If you can walk short distances few times a day and have resources for vet care with heart full of love you could still be an amazing older for an older, lazier small dog or a bonded pair. I've always had oldies (12+, at least!) as they always captured my heart and all the small ones would be incredibly content with what You can provide regarding exercise :)
When my girl was a puppy she was a chronic nipper as she is half cattle dog half border collie so sheep herding dog so her nipping was horrendous and having younger kids in tears all the time was not good. Best thing we did was get a huge container of Vicks vapour run and covered ourselves for a few days felt so gross on but it ended the problem within A few days.
We're planning on getting a dog soon😊. Luckily we have had pups before, multiple both young and old. Though we still do our own research to find a good fitting dog. You can always learn new things
Never used a crate before, only when traveling in the car cause we like the windows down for the breeze and won't take chances with the pup/doggy jumping out.
Beagle/Basset hound mix is a great family dog. Especially since they are set on getting a puppy! Otherwise, I would suggest that they get a grown dog that is known to be gentle with children & has lost its family.
I'm watching this, knowing full well that I'm getting 4 puppies in a month 😅 Just before I get criticism in the comments, I do have a lot of experience with dogs and have had dogs all my life living up to the old age of 17. So I know these puppies will be trained a loved unconditionally ❤️ 😊
Every body who plans on getting a dog should first go through a consultation like this. This would save so much suffering for the dogs and the owners. Please my dear friends, think about what you are getting your selfs into before getting a lovely pet. XXXOOOXXX
Tbh i got my first dog this year, a 2 1/2 year old rescue. Wonderful Doggo. Shes been in a room for like the first days with a baby gate. She quickly learned to jump over it. But it was just for her having some personal space for these very first scary days. She has no crate now. She is mostly in my room, lying on the floor, the Sofa or her own little House inside my room, which is not lockable. She uses it alot now. I got my rules to not bother her when inside and not touching her at all. I may call her but respect it when she doesnt wanna come. If I need her not to move, ill just close the door to my room for 2 Minutes. It works fine. But im usually not going anywhere without her so there isnt any reason for a crate. Mostly, someone is home or she comes with us. We trained her from the beginning to now follow into every room. Or let her at home or closed the door of her first room. Since we have two cats, one always around, i dont think she would feel too lonely for a short time either. We also give her something to eat, like a Kong toy or other treats that need some time to consume, to make sure shes not hella bored.
This is a great episode. I only wish that Victoria had recommended that the second family maybe rescue a dog a little older, maybe 10 months to a year old. People overlook these young adults and in most cases, adopting these young adults will be more of a fit for a "new" pet owner and the housebreaking will already be in place.
I was working on the leash trick with my untrained horse for a while (before I saw this episode), and since I quit Ive noticed he's getting harder to catch 😂 it just takes longer to keep doing it, but, it's with it.
Don’t yell when they run away, bring treats so they know you getting them is rewarding. When you work with them, groom them every single time. Grooming is essential for your horses health and your connection and trust with them. If you need any off-lead training lmk. There’s free lounging which can also be very connective for you and your horse.
Its hilarious that in the first one the girl blames her boyfriend for not helping, when he made it pretty clear that he didnt want a puppy and that having one is a lot of work. Yet she went and got one anyway. Now you can tell she resents him for not wanting to help.
Puppy pads seem so confusing. The dog learns to eliminate indoors on an absorbent surface. It seems much clearer to teach the puppy to always potty outside, IMO. Also, a beagle basset hound? I hope the family enjoys nonstop yodeling. 😆
Raven is a piranha/python mix…. She comes at you nipping like a piranha and her teeth are hooked so when she latches on, you won’t get your limb back… 😂
I remember getting my boy maltese and he was super mouthy. We got him his little sister from the next litter. He nibbled on her and she cried and he stopped. She cried a few more times and then never again. The yelp stopped it all so I would yelp and he knew he hurt me. It stopped pretty quick. He just didn't know and I had to tell him in dog speak.
Victoria teaches owners to yip or yelp when nipped. It is extremely effective. The pups don’t usually want to hurt anyone, they just don’t know it’s hurting!
They really don't know. Being mouthy is how they explore the world, which is why puppies put their mouths on EVERYTHING. We have to teach them that we don't like that behavior.
My sister got a mastiff mix puppy about a year or two ago against my mom’s wishes, the puppy was the same exact way and would start hurting my nephews, cats and us. My 4th nephew would play rough with her and that would cause her to play aggressive with everyone else as a result, we couldn’t even pet her because of her biting, causing trouble when we tried to train her. What had us confused was why he was doing it and not stopping even after having a talk with him many times. My sister ended up having to give her to someone who would be able to take care of her(we didn’t have a good housing situation, hence why our mom said no.) only because my nephew wouldn’t stop hitting her and playing rough and mom had enough of it, we didn’t want that for her. She stayed for about a month with us before my sister caved, I loved that puppy though, she was sweet when she got calm.
I wouldn't get a dog now because I have a disability and couldn't look after it, but as a child my family always owned dogs, but we never had our dogs in cages; It's cruel.
If it’s for when they’re sleeping at night or you’re not home (until we’ll trained), and the crate is large enough plus never used for punishment, it’s fine. A lot of dogs use their crates when they want to be left alone, too!
They have a huge house like that and can’t get a bigger crate? That size is fine to sleep in but if they’re in there all day they’ll need to be able to get up and turn around
I don’t know how long it would be, but I think you guys should do one. We’re you go over all the puppies 🐶 tht you have on film and that Victoria has worked with These puppies are so cute and I loved 🥰 to see your advice the puppies 🐶for future possible puppy problems and to hopefully prevent it

our family always has several dogs in the house so we cycle through puppies fairly regularly, lol. it really is like bringing home another child - they need to be potty trained, fed the right foods, stimulated and educated and taught language, LISTENED TO. a lot of people don't know how to actually listen to their dogs to understand what the dog needs.
@@dietotaku For me it's heartbreaking when people bring home one-to-many puppies because they are cute when small and then when they grow up they treat them like they are bad and they abandon them or even puppies.
I have always believed that programs like these provide valuable educational opportunities at no cost
I wouldn't follow this "training". look up Andy Krueger.
This show has convinced me that I'm a cat person.
Raven was so smart and took to training so quickly!! And her parents did a good job working on putting in effort for her. So sweet!!
Raven's owners made a ton of mistakes at first, but they put in a lot of hard work to address the problems.
I taught my ferrets the same way.
I appreciate that she took the second family to a RESCUE shelter. There are so many pure bred puppies on this show that seem like they were bred
Raven needed training before those teeth hurt someone. She is a very smart dog and seems to learn quickly. Elise and John are going to have a lovely dog by following Victoria's instructions. Love owners who want to help train their dog. I like the couple and clever Raven.
Victoria does not age !! 😍 I’ve been watching for yearsss
That because she’s doing something she loves! You’ll never work a day in your life or age very much, if you’re doing what you love!
And also because these episodes aren't filmed in 2023 but yeah
@@conniebell7987 And if you're a millionaire who can afford the best of everything, ffs.
Why having a dog and let the poor thing 70% of the time locked in a cage? That's awful.
I totally choked up hearing that… poor puppy
Horrible! And the cage is too small.
Why did you get the dog? "Its just so cute!" Leads to a lot of neglected and abused animals
Totally agree !!
This family has the wrong pet… they should have a bird… happy to live their life in a cage
I just got a puppy, and let me be honest, more than half the things I use to discipline her are from this show. What can I say its effective!
I certainly hope that you didn't follow the potty training advice because it's just plumb wrong! They learn within about 3 days with actual proper potty training, even in a cold environment!
@@darrenh6169 I don’t know how cold the area was but maybe there were safety concerns or something
@@darrenh6169for potty training, I've always taken then out every 2 hours, and offer a treat when they do potty. I use a specific treat only for that training, so they only get it when they potty outside.
Works like a charm, 3-7 days depending on the dog.
@@darrenh6169 not every puppy is the same and not every puppy can be trained the same way
Kudos to the family for reaching out BEFORE!!
can we talk about how ADORABLE Raven is tho?
I wish more people hired trainers BEFORE they get dogs, just like this
A beagle mix? Hope they're ready for howling and barking training too!
And stubbornness
They're fantastic family dogs though!
That's all I could think about was Oh NO that mix is gonna bay and bark constantly.
@deeanna8448 Problem is the family wanted a quiet dog.
I have a beagle and they don't all bark and howl constantly they are actually really sweet and affectionate family dogs 🥰
Who else wants to just cover themselves in puppies after watching that? So adorable.
If your partner tells you upfront that they don’t want a pet or that responsibility you need to respect that decision. If you have a pet when they meet you that’s different. If you don’t have a pet and they tell you that they don’t want a pet and you decide to get one that’s YOUR PET!!!
I completely agree. Else has been so unfair on John. He was clear, now he has to give THREE walks every night? He must feel completely hijacked
Agree. The person is clearly telling you that doesnt want a dog. So if you insist, you should take care of it
😭😭😭😭I DON'T WANNA WAIT 76 DAYS FOR THIS
sameeeee
ITS TIME
@@nurtiny1024 FINALLY 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Lol. I have a pomeranian 9 mo old pup. His "bedroom🤗" is a giant dog size crate. He has cloth puppy pads, toys, his little blankets, a ceramic bowl for water in it. Its is refered to as Asa's bedroom 😂.
19:40 aww the second lady was so excited!! That was so cute lol.
I likfe for the second family to ask beforehand for help before any dog in their home. Its so nice and well-prepared.
I love how awesome those parents are! Mom and dad were super involved and willing to help there kids grow in responsibility.
So important for everyone to take responsibility for your puppy and plus the kids can learn to and this so a adorable opportunity ❤
The family who got her to come before they got a puppy did well what a good way to be prepared 💯
I just loved the family, the mother had such a caring and bubbly energy. The father seemed also very caring and overall a good guy, the kids were happy, beautiful family. I hope they're happy with their pets
Loved that she helped this family get the right puppy for them
when I decided to get a puppy I prepared myself, I actually read Victoria's Book "The Ultimate Guide to Raising a Puppy" and still I did not expect SO much work having a puppy... so its great that the family wants to start out right which lets u know u have responsible future owners here
What a great teacher! I wish all dog owners wanted to learn.
I can say a lot of not great things about my mother, but thank goodness she introduced all of us to animals early on as a vet tech. Because I couldn't imagine being an adult and not knowing jack about owning a puppy.
Victoria has the best training methods and tips!
Είναι αξιόλογος σαν άνθρωπος,και εξαιρετική εκπαιδεύτρια,😊
My puppy use to be like raven but because I had an adult dog in the house I allowed my adult dog to train him and it worked very well.
I have 4 !
Elise and John are the first couple I didn't want to shake through the screen. They understood the assignment!
You could see the Trauma in ravens eyes in the last few Minutes. It's so sad she had her puppy months locked away so long.
Lollipop is just so adorable!
I'm so happy the family had decided to ask a dog trainer before getting a puppy so they can understand how to properly care for a puppy! I find that most people look at dogs and go "oh it's cute, lets get it!" And don't actually understand the proper way to care for them
One can not help but notice the families are each very comfortably well off. Can average income families afford the have Victoria help them?
I hope you can recover if it’s you who got bit that’s probably why we have to wait 76 days for this
It's years old
Great show! Would have loved to see how the puppy and the cat interacted, and have that part of the training demonstrated.
3:17 I love how scared Victoria seems of the dog, it’s so funny to see the reaction of how the dog was acting lol
I just got my puppy and this video was very helpful for me.
this couple wanted the best for their dog, i can tell. the thing is that if you keep the dog in the cage almost the whole day, when its time to let her out, its like all that energy burst out, and all the dog was focused on was playing and letting all that energy out.
What a amazing simple but effective explanation to this kids 😊
I am astounded that the owners didn’t think that tiny crate was to small for her!
Absolutely clueless people. Feel so sorry for the doggie
i love jow excited the mom is😭
I'm so proud right now 🥺 those words made me feel so happy
My biggest regret is not taking enough time and effort to training my dog as a puppy. My dog knows some things but certain things needs work.
The first couple was not ready for a puppy. If he told her he did not want one, why would she not believe him (symptom of problems in their relationship)? They have done zero training, not even bothering to housebreak Raven properly.
Exactly. Glad he stepped up though. It's a real commitment for many years you have to be prepared!
My favorite dog trainer
76 DAYS??!!??!!
Never used a crate before, only when traveling in the car cause we like the windows down for the breeze and won't take chances with the pup/doggy
jumping out.
I love these videos cause they help prevent and stop problems arising, happening, or probably gonna happen with a pup or dog.
Beagle/Basset hound mix is a great family dog. Especially since they are set on getting a puppy! Otherwise, I would suggest that they get a grown dog that is known to be gentle with children & has lost its family.
Verry nice tactic, positive correction are always good👍🏾
When Charlie comes to visit Raven...."Ouch Raven, that really hurt!" 😮
I'm watching this, knowing full well that I'm getting 4 puppies in a month 😅
Just before I get criticism in the comments, I do have a lot of experience with dogs and have had dogs all my life living up to the old age of 17. So I know these puppies will be trained a loved unconditionally ❤️ 😊
So how goes it with getting four puppies all at once ?
Do you still have all 4 puppies?
4 pups at 17 isn't a good idea, if you actually had experience you'd not be doing that
I've loved all the dogs in my family. But oh my gosh, a trained dog is so much more pleasant to be around.
Our Rottweiler is 12 and he's very calm (I promise not just bc he's old) Even when he was younger he never bit!
He shouldn't have to help. She wanted the dog, she made a unilateral decision to get one, it's HER dog.
Finally lollipop is back i have been waiting
Victoria is tops in training..❤
Puppy pads seem so confusing. The dog learns to eliminate indoors on an absorbent surface. It seems much clearer to teach the puppy to always potty outside, IMO.
Also, a beagle basset hound? I hope the family enjoys nonstop yodeling. 😆
Puppy pads are useful in the first couple of months since the puppy can't control its bladder yet. But after that they become counteproductive.
Raven is a piranha/python mix…. She comes at you nipping like a piranha and her teeth are hooked so when she latches on, you won’t get your limb back…
😂
Well done Victoria! Such beautiful puppies! I thought Raven was really clever and well trained apart from the nipping! 😊
I have had my pup since he was very young he is 8 months old now yes it was very hard at first but it’s very rewarding because we are growing together
5:18 She should understand this reflects his attitude towards fatherhood
Well, if he doesn't want kids they shouldn't be having them
Agreed, having children has to be a mutual decision.
Even if 1 parent doesn't want kids. Y'all shouldn't be having kids
Victoria! You are amazing ✨
That was how I taught my Corgi bite inhibition as a puppy
They really don't know. Being mouthy is how they explore the world, which is why puppies put their mouths on EVERYTHING. We have to teach them that we don't like that behavior.
This reminds me of super nanny😂
@mswendybear1 yeah a lot of dogs like that quiet space sometimes. As long as they aren't locked in it all thr time, it's fine.
Hahahaha I love how’s she’s driving with the top down and also a winter coat
They have a huge house like that and can’t get a bigger crate? That size is fine to sleep in but if they’re in there all day they’ll need to be able to get up and turn around
Victoria is Amazing
I don’t know how long it would be, but I think you guys should do one. We’re you go over all the puppies 🐶 tht you have on film and that Victoria has worked with
These puppies are so cute and I loved 🥰 to see your advice the puppies 🐶for future possible puppy problems and to hopefully prevent it
During the puppy training I was melting seeing lollypop fall asleep in the dads arms
