Yeah, very unusual. Especially for such a high-value tank. Maybe got lost from their unit? Or were detached to check something out? Maybe just a bad call.
Given that the first Bradley passes in front of the T90, I don't think the attack was planned so much as it was just covering a route the Bradley's had to travel down. The first Bradley leaves after suppressing the T90, then the second comes from the direction the first one went, as if he came back to help. Ideally if they had planned the attack ahead of time, the second Bradley would have cut across the snow and shot first into the T90's side, then have the first Bradley come in to fire a TOW on the side or rear of the turret.
@@arandombard1197 It's complete chaos inside that tank. They've taken multiple hits, shits out of control, and the crew probably isn't confident they aren't about to join the Russian space program.
My read on turret spinning and the tank driving into the tree is that the crew intentionally hit the tree so that the gun tube would smack against it and blow out the stuck traverse motors so that the turret would quit spinning and they could safely exit the tank. There's really no safe way to egress the tank with the turret spinning like that, they had to do something to stop it before they could bail.
i think it is just an oil leak in the hidraulic system. My guess is that they hit the tree on accident and it actually broke the overlub rotors making the turret get stuck in place. But it is a wild guess, its impossible to know even for the crew.
@@markusmachel397 a hydraulic leak cannot cause runaway turret rotation. The turret is operated by hydraulically powered motors. Leaking hydraulics would stop the turret, not send it out of control.
It would make more sense to retreat to friendly lines than bail out. The whole thing was a very long list of bad decisions. If they kept driving they Most likely would have escaped the fov drone. Cheftain, being a veteran tank commander, has always said that what happens in video games is impossible to happen in reality, yet here we are seeing solitary tanks, unaccompanied by infantry and not in convoys as if they were in World of Tanks wandering around looking for the tank damaged enemy that is camping and be destroyed in direct clash with other armored vehicles. That the first to shoot is the one who wins (Cheftain's words) and in fact in the video this is what happens. I'm perplexed.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the T90M does engage the first Bradley. It is easier to see in the non-sped-up video but at 0:42 the T90 appears to fire its main cannon and miss hitting a house between the tank and the Bradley.

Its so cool to see how combined arms warfare has changed with the introduction of drones. Its like a videogame with how quickly the drones can come in and strike.
Reading this comment makes me want to be mean and hurt your feelings because you're trying to throw around terms that you don't understand, but I'm going to be nice. "Combined arms is an approach to warfare that seeks to integrate different combat arms of a military to achieve mutually complementary effects"
@Mrfraser OK, so our ideas of gravity didn't change when we introduced the ideas of relativity? The idea of combined arms was created thousands of years ago when we used bows and arrows and swords. If you are arguing that the idea of combined arms hasn't changed since the stone ages, then you are wrong.
@@LightskinCat You nailed it in your first sentence. If you read what I wrote, I quoted the textbook for you. "Military doctrine is the fundamental set of principles that guides military forces as they pursue national security objectives" Clearly you have a poor public school education and struggled to finish at the bottom of the class. The definition of "Fundamental" is "a central or primary rule or principle on which something is based." Your ideas are not the basis of gravity. You could never think of anything that would ever alter gravity because it's a fundamental force. It is a base building block of all matter in existence. The universe could not exist without gravity, and what you understand about it doesn't change anything about gravity. That's how you know that it's a fundamental force, because NOTHING CAN CHANGE IT! Do you understand that now? If I invent a new type of math, it doesn't invalidate algebra. If I develop a new formula, that doesn't invalidate 2+2=4. Do you understand? Is this basic enough for you? No matter what I do in mathematics, no matter what discovery I make, nothing will ever change "fundamental math" because it's "fundamental." The definition of "Fundamental" is "a central or primary rule or principle on which something is based." That's the reason why, science requires a mathematical proof... Because it's fundamentally proven as a fact if the math always works. Do you understand the concept now? The idea of combined arms isn't that you have multiple weapons on a battlefield at one time. Planes don't just fly around looking for targets on the ground. They could, and they do, but CAS has an infantry guy on the ground telling the plane where the bad guy is and spotting for the plane. That combination is what makes them combined. The two independent types of units began functioning as a single entity but they aren't necessarily co-dependent. That's the principle behind combined arms. How you could be struggling to understand that is ridiculous. Before you make yourself a fool trying to sooth your ego... We're talking about a formal academic science called "military studies" which is a college level curriculum that I can cite hundreds of textbooks for you. Trust me, your fucking wrong, it's that simple. You can get as butt hurt as you like. Kick and scream if it makes you happy. That's not going to change the facts.
The thing that stood out for me is how Ukraine is obviously learning how to do combined arms to a high standard; The observation drone on station, someone coordinating from that footage, the call in of one or two FPV drones, there seems to be a couple of artillery rounds land in area while the two Bradleys are stood off, the fact the two Bradley's are manoeuvring and repositioning constantly... As Red says, even a good crew in a lone T90M would struggle because it never stood a chance. But on paper, a T90M should have no problem dealing with two Bradley's, it demonstrates in the realities of combat how important coordination is. The T90M crew do seem to try to get into cover, but when that obviously isn't going to work, and the turret rotation system gets damaged, it shows up why the slow reverse speed is such a problem. If that T90M had a fast reverse the TC could have guided the tank out of the area in reverse much earlier, but knowing they have to turn around to move with any useful speed, they seem to hesitate long enough for damage to accumulate.
Both sides had infantry support as well as drones. There are several videos from this particular firefight in Stepovne and this isolated clip doesn't really show the true picture because there were other vehicles, as another poster has commented the battle was really intense with losses on both sides. Coincidentally 2 Bradleys were destroyed by Russian ATGM crews hiding in a tree-line when they moved across a field towards the railway line, maybe even these 2.
@@stevebuckley7788sounds like made up tbh. Russians always claim they destroyed the thing that just destroyed one of their things. Patriot, fighter jets, tanks and everything else pretty much. So I really doubt it.
Both sides had a lot of time to learn. The Bradleys in the video are from the 47th Mechanised Batallion, an Elite formation, likewise the T90M means those werent rookies on the Russian side. Simple put, this was an engagement where the Ukranians had the initiative and better coordination, in such situations its really hard to fight back, the destroyed T90M is the result.
@@rafaelomansan: I saw an interview of crew of one of the Bradleys and they were really inexperienced, this was like their second operation ever in Bradley. And the driver had driven only a passenger car before his training. But they had been in infantry, tho, so new only to the vehicle.
My thoughts, the sights got blown out either by the Bradley or the initial explosion (arty, FPV?). The turret mechanism failure was caused by the second Bradley, possibly a turret ring strike, or possibly shrapnel causing an electrical/hydraulic fault. You can see that the tank struggles to disengage because it doesn't have a reverse speed, it tries to reverse away and it crawls away SO slowly. And then when they finally do decide to turn around a second bradley appears to give rear armour fire, a bad day to be in a tank with a bad reverse speed. In any case i think that whatever jammed the turret rotation also completely stripped the great ring/gear mechanism after it hit the tree, the gears aren't going to stop spinning so either the turret ring gear got stripped, or the turret rotation mechanism got stripped. I don't think they rotated the turret o allow the driver to escape, i think that was just convenient, but that may come from me misunderstanding which direction the tank hit the tree in (i think it was going forward? could be wrong). In any case, it shows that while people say "you can't pen a tank with an autocannon" that doesn't mean that they can't damage sensitive systems or just put the fear of god into a tank crew. Think about being in that tank, you are in a town with little to no infantry support for, god knows what reason, you are getting hit by Indirect fire, FPV drones are plinking all around (and you know how precise they can be), and on top of all of that a fucking bradley starts smashing you with autocannon fire point blank, and blinds both gunner and commander optics. I think there was likely a lot of panic and disorganization in that tank and it all boiled down to it driving into a tree.
Apparently in tank biathalons, they have had this exact issue before. I still dont know how shitty the engineering must be for traverse motors to simply get stuck like that. If it was competently designed, it would be complex enough for the drive to just not work when damaged. Are the traverse motors just regular brushed DC motors? Did the encoders or whatever get damaged or something?
@@honkhonk8009 not sure regarding the specific engineering, they are quite powerful motors given what they are moving and how quickly. That being said a short circuit or any number of other issues (e.g. contacts being stuck on the control mechanism ) could have caused that. All of which could be caused by battle damage. People think of tanks as lumbering behemoths built like a brick shit house. The reality is they are a very heavy, very expensive sports car from about 1970 (ironically when most of them were designed) which means low reliability and frustrating trouble shooting. A lot can and will go wrong if you leave it lying around too long with no maintenance. And when it comes to battle damage, anything is fair game given that in average there is several tons of electrical cabling.
The T90M has the same abysmal 4kmph reverse speed as the T90A and all of the T72 series. It did have reverse but it's pointless to crawl with 4kmph in combat.
On top you forgot to mention, they blew two of their fire smokes, they know bradleys can have tow missles or someone disembark with atgm and they are dead; they are blind, turret is rotating. No one in their place could do anything better, unless some battle hardened complete psycho rambo. They got scared shitless, made mistakes and just bailed out. If t90m had proper reverse speed, most likely they would have saved themselves and the tank and disengaged properly. It shows that huge weakness of t series tank. russia still refuses to fix
No. It’s highly unlikely it got hit by an ATGM (that’s cope). The tank is other than a tiny fire completely intact. We’ve seen many videos of what an ATGM does to tanks, any tanks. Also, the one Bradley could only fire explosive rounds, not armor piercing.
After taking multiple hits from several directions, and possibly after loosing situational awareness im not surprised the crew bailed - buttoned up and not knowing whats going to hit next must be terrifying ..
I while ago, a CH-47 crashed because a tablet that the pilot was using fell off and jammed the controls. I think a similar occurrence is to blame for the turret rotating uncontrollably given that they were able to stop it. Maybe the concussive force from being hit caused something to fall and jam the turret controls
At 1:24 you can clearly see one of the Bradley rounds hits the T-90M and sets something on fire, which in turn creates the explosion at 1:25 which is clearly oriented towards the right side. Further in the footage we see something on fire on the T-90M`s left front turret area, but on the photos with it abandoned (example 2:55) there is nothing damaged (except the laser rangefinder) and no burn marks on the left side of the turret. Strange. Instead there are some burn marks around the commander`s sight which implies the Bradly maybe tried to pull a warthunder stunt by damaging some modules :)))
@@bolbarazvan that is true, if you slow the video down right before the drone hits, you can see that it is on fire. Its a quite small fire and its get put out or made larger by the drone shortly after the hit.
My guess it is an explosion in the external ammo stowage bin at the back of T-90M turret. Some reserve ammunition cooked off but nothing catastrophic happened because it basically a big blow out panel.
The T-90 took so much hits yet it was still operational, other than having its turet rotating like crazy… The Bradley crews were brave as much as they were lucky, because it would take a T-90 to take one shot to completely destroy a them, especially from such close range…
I doubt it was operational in any meaningful sense, its sights were probably all destroyed making it nearly impossible to actually hit anything. At this close a range a tank starts being at more of a disadvantage since autocannon fire can easily destroy its sights and autocannons have a massive fire rate advantage. The tank would do much better at longer range where autocannons have a hard time destroying sights and the relative motion of the Bradleys would be smaller.
@@hedgehog3180 It wasn’t fully operational, but it could still drive and release smoke to defend itself. And I am not sure about that close range thing you’ve mentioned, since there are many videos from this war in which tanks fire at each other from similar distances… so I don’t see any problem in that regard…
It’s a kill in the sense it took the tank out of the fight. Something got through the armor that caused the turret to spin uncontrollably and the driver to freak out and drive blindly into a tree and get stuck.
Exactly just like a mobility kill. If you knock something out of the fight for the near future it is a kill on the battlefield. Not to mention this tank was totally knocked out and can't be recovered after the fight.
The tank was first attacked by a drone. Three Bradleys shot at him, the first was destroyed, the second used up ammunition, and the third shot at "finishing off". The tower jammed, but the crew evacuated from T-90, and then the tank was dragged to the rear of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to replace the active protection.
Why did Russia need to recover this? We are told above that it is delivering 50 T90s a week (and more T72 and T80) - at the evident rate of crew loss there is no way Russia can man and service this many new tanks - it certainly doesn’t want to waste time on old ones.

you must have watched the wrong video. it was hit 20 times by 25 mm and it broke the sights. didnt do shit to the outer part of the tank clearly. The two drone shots either, it broke a drive for the turret . dream on@@ПервыйиПоследний-д4г
If you watch the full video from another drone, the crew gets out and runs away, Bradley did not destroy the tank, she broke all the sights of the tank, also broke the turret because of this it randomly rotated. The crew survived and escaped
I think it's likely that the turret mounted sighting systems were probably damaged very early in the engagement because the t90 didn't even appear to be fighting back for most of the video. Either the sighting systems, or the turret took a hit that caused the turning machinery to malfunctioning, which is the only way I could think of for why the turret could go from unable to fight back to uncontrollably spinning. It was a pretty strange video, but i think it also highlighted the importance of decent reverse speed, and how much even the t90 suffers from not having it. The t90 really ended up between a rock and a hard place when it desperately wanted to get away from the Bradley fire, but knew that it didn't have the reverse speed to escape without exposing the rear armor to that same Bradley fire.
It seems Bradley's shots from the autocannon deflected downwards by the lower part of turret armor towards turret ring. And at least one of these shots seem to penetrate somewhere near turret ring and destroying an important component for turret rotation control. Basically turret front shape acted as a shot trap for the incoming fire.
I'm pretty sure that Russian tanks don't have shot traps, since that it isn't actually steel armor, instead ERA. The actual armor (especially on the t-90) is straight steel plates with no angles
I'm guessing the electric motor driving the turret rotation screwed up or got stuck inside the tank. When they hit the tree with tank and turret, it either unjammed or fried the rotation mechanism. Mo matter, things were pretty exciting in that tank for a few minutes.
Darts dont deflect, they shatter. However I assume some lucky hits got the better of the tanks electronics. The kinetic force might have caused the damage even if it didnt pen
A little bit of confort for the T-90M fans. This particular t-90M is indeed survived this meetup. This event took place in Berdichy nort west to Avdiivka. The Russians take the city soon after the fall of Avdiivka and recovered this T-90M. It is also being confirmed that the reason the T-90M did not fired back is because the sights and drivers vision port where shoot off blinding the crew inside the vehicle.
they made it out of the tank but i read from a russian telegram that they ultimately did not make it out of stepove alive, hit by artillery supposedly.
If anything I wouldnt say this shows the failure of the T-90m, the T-90m performed well, all things considered it took quite a beating and kept its crew safe. However, it does showe the failure of the Russian command in not deploying armored assets properly. A single T-90m in a small village all by itself, its no shock it was ambushed. This wasnt a Bradley Vs T-90M fight, This was a T-90M vs 2x Bradleys with recon drone support, and multiple FPV drones.
No... the rest of the armored column was fucked in the attack and this one was left over. Also no shit 25mm can't pen a MBT so that says nothing. These Bradleys were able to close in and disable a modern MBT and that screams a failure of the T90.
Pros: Better Armor Protection Cons: It depends which crew is operating the Tank and how the Commander deployed them. The results is less desirable than you think about it. But this lone T90 is the last of the remaining Russian attack column. It wasn’t alone, in fact, the armoured column was disabled previously in an ambush before this last stand show in the video.
Just like Leopards then, any advanced tank become shit when not deployed properly. My assumption is that this T-90 is either got separated or simply the only survivor
Great reporting. Other news claim the Bradleys won...but in the end it was abandoned and taken out from a UAV. No on is really talking about how many Bradleys have been knocked out so far.
A lone T90M? I cannot understand why this happened, aren't these the best tanks the Russians have on the frontlines? I'm wondering if there were other tanks but they were ambushed or just a shocking lack of communications led to this.
This happened because even the death star can be destroyed. Everything created by man can be destroyed, there is no invincible technology, it is still a consumable material one way or another
This was in Stepove, the T90 was not alone, there were 3 more tanks and infantry vehicles that had already been destroyed, this was the first in the column and the last to be destroyed. Cannot use the tow at close range
Love you red, you are one of the "reporter" youtubers who actually knows what they talk about. I have heard alot of shit about this whole encounter that is just wrong. Good work keep it up :)
Most importatnt that the crew intact. Was ambushed by two bradleys, after blinded by fpv drone. Tank optics and targeting systems was damaged. Bradley can't penetrate the armor. Tank is already uder repair.
random hypothesis about the turret spinning, what if the gunner was intentional doing that to try and see better. given its a gun scope he may be spinning it around like a RADAR. feels like its less steps then the turret malfunctioning in such a specific way
@@GrindThunderer thats right but without the FPV Drone the Bradleys should not have had a chance to disable the T-90 in that way So the MVP on that ambush were the Drones not the Bradleys
In any case: these Bradley crews got HUGE pair of balls! Engaging a MBT with IFV autocannon is very brave. Could there perhaps been internal damage due to spalling? When I first heard of 'Bradley takes out T-90' I was expecting a TOW2B attack. However history shows the Bradley 25mm is more capable than it appears. It has DU penetrator. In Desert Storm Bradleys destroyed T-55 and T-62s with 25mm no problems. Even T-72 within close range (200-500m) was penetrated and destroyed. Russian tanks even today have weak standard armor. They rely a lot on ERA, which is obsolete compared to KE rounds and duel warhead missiles. While fighting a tank is not a position you want to be as an IFV crew, on Russian tanks there should still be a lot more areas that can be penetrated by autocannons. And on any tank the optics are parts you can hit and take out.
Did they destroy it though? It seems that the turret traverse was damaged by fpv drones, while bradleys basically just gave concussions to the crew while not being able to open it.
They also had Drones to help with monitoring and disorientating explosive hits. This was a 3 on 1 fight.

Pretty sure driver has an exit that comes out below the tank.
"Military doctrine is the fundamental set of principles that guides military forces as they pursue national security objectives"
Clearly you have a poor public school education and struggled to finish at the bottom of the class. The definition of "Fundamental" is "a central or primary rule or principle on which something is based."
Your ideas are not the basis of gravity.

@@Shephardd387 I have no doubt hahaha... The T-90 crew was probably like "are you fuc&ing serious rn".....
My assumption is that the first hit from FPV drones already dealt substantial damage before Bradley came in in ambush.
Both sides had infantry support as well as drones.
There are several videos from this particular firefight in Stepovne and this isolated clip doesn't really show the true picture because there were other vehicles, as another poster has commented the battle was really intense with losses on both sides.

Great analysis of an intriguing confrontation. Been waiting for a redeffect video on this clash to get what really happened.
Imagine how loud those 25mm smacking against the tank be for the t90 crew
The T90M has the same abysmal 4kmph reverse speed as the T90A and all of the T72 series. It did have reverse but it's pointless to crawl with 4kmph in combat.

Because the Brads blow out the cameras, the T90 become blind.
By that, almost disabling the tank, technically one could look out, but that would be dangerous

Pros: Better Armor Protection
Cons: It depends which crew is operating the Tank and how the Commander deployed them.
The results is less desirable than you think about it. But this lone T90 is the last of the remaining Russian attack column. It wasn’t alone, in fact, the armoured column was disabled previously in an ambush before this last stand show in the video.
