      Given that the first Bradley passes in front of the T90, I don't think the attack was planned so much as it was just covering a route the Bradley's had to travel down. The first Bradley leaves after suppressing the T90, then the second comes from the direction the first one went, as if he came back to help. Ideally if they had planned the attack ahead of time, the second Bradley would have cut across the snow and shot first into the T90's side, then have the first Bradley come in to fire a TOW on the side or rear of the turret.

    My read on turret spinning and the tank driving into the tree is that the crew intentionally hit the tree so that the gun tube would smack against it and blow out the stuck traverse motors so that the turret would quit spinning and they could safely exit the tank. There's really no safe way to egress the tank with the turret spinning like that, they had to do something to stop it before they could bail.

      It would make more sense to retreat to friendly lines than bail out. The whole thing was a very long list of bad decisions. If they kept driving they Most likely would have escaped the fov drone. Many tanks have a hatch at the bottom of the hull for getting out of. Makes no sense sacrificing life or safety because something might happen; because being behind enemy lines, something now will happen no matter what.

"Combined arms is an approach to warfare that seeks to integrate different combat arms of a military to achieve mutually complementary effects"

    • @LightskinCat

      @Mrfraser OK, so our ideas of gravity didn't change when we introduced the ideas of relativity? The idea of combined arms was created thousands of years ago when we used bows and arrows and swords. If you are arguing that the idea of combined arms hasn't changed since the stone ages, then you are wrong.

    • @SmokePoppa
      @SmokePoppa Год назад

      @@LightskinCat You nailed it in your first sentence. If you read what I wrote, I quoted the textbook for you. "Military doctrine is the fundamental set of principles that guides military forces as they pursue national security objectives"
      Clearly you have a poor public school education and struggled to finish at the bottom of the class. The definition of "Fundamental" is "a central or primary rule or principle on which something is based."
      Your ideas are not the basis of gravity. You could never think of anything that would ever alter gravity because it's a fundamental force. It is a base building block of all matter in existence. The universe could not exist without gravity, and what you understand about it doesn't change anything about gravity. That's how you know that it's a fundamental force, because NOTHING CAN CHANGE IT! Do you understand that now?
      If I invent a new type of math, it doesn't invalidate algebra. If I develop a new formula, that doesn't invalidate 2+2=4. Do you understand? Is this basic enough for you? No matter what I do in mathematics, no matter what discovery I make, nothing will ever change "fundamental math" because it's "fundamental." The definition of "Fundamental" is "a central or primary rule or principle on which something is based." That's the reason why, science requires a mathematical proof... Because it's fundamentally proven as a fact if the math always works. Do you understand the concept now?
      The idea of combined arms isn't that you have multiple weapons on a battlefield at one time. Planes don't just fly around looking for targets on the ground. They could, and they do, but CAS has an infantry guy on the ground telling the plane where the bad guy is and spotting for the plane. That combination is what makes them combined. The two independent types of units began functioning as a single entity but they aren't necessarily co-dependent. That's the principle behind combined arms. How you could be struggling to understand that is ridiculous.
      Before you make yourself a fool trying to sooth your ego... We're talking about a formal academic science called "military studies" which is a college level curriculum that I can cite hundreds of textbooks for you. Trust me, your fucking wrong, it's that simple. You can get as butt hurt as you like. Kick and scream if it makes you happy. That's not going to change the facts.

    The thing that stood out for me is how Ukraine is obviously learning how to do combined arms to a high standard; The observation drone on station, someone coordinating from that footage, the call in of one or two FPV drones, there seems to be a couple of artillery rounds land in area while the two Bradleys are stood off, the fact the two Bradley's are manoeuvring and repositioning constantly... As Red says, even a good crew in a lone T90M would struggle because it never stood a chance.
    But on paper, a T90M should have no problem dealing with two Bradley's, it demonstrates in the realities of combat how important coordination is.
    The T90M crew do seem to try to get into cover, but when that obviously isn't going to work, and the turret rotation system gets damaged, it shows up why the slow reverse speed is such a problem. If that T90M had a fast reverse the TC could have guided the tank out of the area in reverse much earlier, but knowing they have to turn around to move with any useful speed, they seem to hesitate long enough for damage to accumulate.

    My thoughts, the sights got blown out either by the Bradley or the initial explosion (arty, FPV?). The turret mechanism failure was caused by the second Bradley, possibly a turret ring strike, or possibly shrapnel causing an electrical/hydraulic fault. You can see that the tank struggles to disengage because it doesn't have a reverse speed, it tries to reverse away and it crawls away SO slowly. And then when they finally do decide to turn around a second bradley appears to give rear armour fire, a bad day to be in a tank with a bad reverse speed.
    In any case i think that whatever jammed the turret rotation also completely stripped the great ring/gear mechanism after it hit the tree, the gears aren't going to stop spinning so either the turret ring gear got stripped, or the turret rotation mechanism got stripped. I don't think they rotated the turret o allow the driver to escape, i think that was just convenient, but that may come from me misunderstanding which direction the tank hit the tree in (i think it was going forward? could be wrong).
    In any case, it shows that while people say "you can't pen a tank with an autocannon" that doesn't mean that they can't damage sensitive systems or just put the fear of god into a tank crew. Think about being in that tank, you are in a town with little to no infantry support for, god knows what reason, you are getting hit by Indirect fire, FPV drones are plinking all around (and you know how precise they can be), and on top of all of that a fucking bradley starts smashing you with autocannon fire point blank, and blinds both gunner and commander optics. I think there was likely a lot of panic and disorganization in that tank and it all boiled down to it driving into a tree.

      Apparently in tank biathalons, they have had this exact issue before.
      I still dont know how shitty the engineering must be for traverse motors to simply get stuck like that.
      If it was competently designed, it would be complex enough for the drive to just not work when damaged.
      Are the traverse motors just regular brushed DC motors? Did the encoders or whatever get damaged or something?

    • @pinkyfull
      @pinkyfull Год назад +2

      @@honkhonk8009 not sure regarding the specific engineering, they are quite powerful motors given what they are moving and how quickly. That being said a short circuit or any number of other issues (e.g. contacts being stuck on the control mechanism ) could have caused that. All of which could be caused by battle damage. People think of tanks as lumbering behemoths built like a brick shit house. The reality is they are a very heavy, very expensive sports car from about 1970 (ironically when most of them were designed) which means low reliability and frustrating trouble shooting. A lot can and will go wrong if you leave it lying around too long with no maintenance. And when it comes to battle damage, anything is fair game given that in average there is several tons of electrical cabling.

    I think it's likely that the turret mounted sighting systems were probably damaged very early in the engagement because the t90 didn't even appear to be fighting back for most of the video. Either the sighting systems, or the turret took a hit that caused the turning machinery to malfunctioning, which is the only way I could think of for why the turret could go from unable to fight back to uncontrollably spinning. It was a pretty strange video, but i think it also highlighted the importance of decent reverse speed, and how much even the t90 suffers from not having it. The t90 really ended up between a rock and a hard place when it desperately wanted to get away from the Bradley fire, but knew that it didn't have the reverse speed to escape without exposing the rear armor to that same Bradley fire.

    In Desert Storm Bradleys destroyed T-55 and T-62s with 25mm no problems. Even T-72 within close range (200-500m) was penetrated and destroyed.
    Russian tanks even today have weak standard armor. They rely a lot on ERA, which is obsolete compared to KE rounds and duel warhead missiles.
    While fighting a tank is not a position you want to be as an IFV crew, on Russian tanks there should still be a lot more areas that can be penetrated by autocannons. And on any tank the optics are parts you can hit and take out.

      Did they destroy it though?
      It seems that the turret traverse was damaged by fpv drones, while bradleys basically just gave concussions to the crew while not being able to open it.
      Anyway, at least the MBT held better better than its western counterparts with paper thin sides and frontal hull armour.

    Given that the t-90 is based on the t-72 chassie, the horizontal turret drive should be on the left side, in front of the gunner but it could be the commanders overide that actually got damaged and sent fals signal to the fire control system making it rotate at full speed.

    The turret might have gotten stuck rotating due to damage so the crew intentionally drove into the tree to wedge it against something and then they turned off turret rotation all together. The tank was still mobile enough to make a retreat but then the FPV hits it and takes out the mobility, making the tank unsalvageable.
