More than half a century ago the pews of Kolkata’s stately synagogues were filled with members of a thriving Indian Jewish community. Today, the congregations are dwindling but dedicated Muslim caretakers tend to the three active synagogues in the city. One patriarch has been in the role for 60 years and works alongside his two sons. Atlas Obscura and filmmaker Ana Gonzalez share the history of Kolkata's Magen David Synagogue in this poignant short.

Hazrat Omar (R.A) when he concurred Jerusalem and didn't prayed inside the Church despite the priest request. Because he knew once he had prayed inside the Church then his other muslim followers will start praying inside the Church. In his regime he took care of other religion properties and didn't encorched them... I am so happy to see these Muslims safeguarding the Jewish Synagogue in similar light of our beloved Hazrat Omar.
There is so much of commonality between the Abrahamic region of Jews, Christian and Islam just like cousin brothers. But due to geo-political rush of power the animosity has been imbibed through the poisonous leaders of each communities..

My focus has always been just on being a righteous woman and learning about people, music, food and culture. Only God and His will matter in the end anyway, so why involve in anything as politics? It is a waste of valuable time when improving one's community is a much better way to use time. Quran, Al-Hajj : 40
[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, "Our Lord is Allah." And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

Kolkata in general is a very liberal city. I’ve heard of stories from dad about how a Muslim family he knew sponsored a Hindu festival. I was born to a Hindu family, I used to go to St. Paul’s Cathedral on Christmas Eve every year to listen to the choir, I’ve been to Sikh Gurdwaras,a mosque , Buddhist Monasteries and never once turned away.

Can’t believe NatGeo actually made a documentary on this place. Our entire family is really into history in general and visiting places with historical significance has always been one of our favourite pastimes. If you’re in Kolkata for a visit, do check out some of these beautiful hidden gems the city has on offer! ( highly recommend St. John’s Church which even has Job Charnock’s mausoleum). The city has so much more than just the National Museum or the beloved Victoria Memorial, although these places are a must visit as well. You won’t believe how rich Kolkata is in history. Definitely one of the reasons why I love the city so much.❤️

The modern day city of Kolkata was built by Jewish archeologists under English rule.
When the time came, they went but left their legacy for us to understand their culture.
