I absolutely love English paper piecing and the fact that it’s a great take along project. My personal preference is thread basting, but it’s good to know there are other options
Nice job! I never used glue but basted through the paper….. but I was 12. 50+ years later I’ll try your technique, precut! Add the hole punch, no whip stitch & remove the paper before sewing. I love having small ready to go projects. Always learning something new! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your technique. I don't love glue basting, but it does make the process more mobile. I like to do it when we take long car trips to visit family. I can do all the steps in the car with the glue or thread basting. But regardless of how we get the job done, EPP is a lot of fun. Now I want to discover new ideas for projects to make other than large quilts.
Glad it was helpful! I have a few EPP projects on my channel that aren't quilts. I'm with you, I love making quilts but also like to find other ways to incorporate english paper piecing other than quilting.
I have been wanting to give EPP a try. You have just gave me the best tutorial yet. This makes more sense to me. I will give it a try. Another tip I have found is I use my cricut to cut my hexagons.
I love EPP too! I don't use glue either. I find it messy and hard to work with. But I also don't iron or trim or use multiple wonder clips when doing hexagons. I just use the 2.5" squares as they are, fold the first edge and clip once at the corner, then start basting around the corners. It tuns out nice and straight for me and leaves the perfect amount of room for the needle to glide through right over the paper. I can share the link to the thread basting tutorial I used if you might be interested. I haven't seen your way of stitching before. How does it hold up in a quilt with wear and tear?
I was sorry to hear about people struggling with glue as I have been doing EPP for the past few years using a Sewline glue pen and found it very easy to use. It is low-tack, so not sticky on your fingers, but holds the papers in securely for as long as necessary and then it is very easy to remove them. Quicker and less faff than tacking with thread.
Hi- I just started learning EPP a couple weeks ago. I'm hoping you can help me with a question. I have used the SewLine glue stick and now I'm finding the paper difficult to remove also. Does a steam iron help to release the glue so its easier to remove the papers? I don't mind if my hexi papers aren't reusable....Ok...I'm back. I JUST now, USED MY MINI IRON to UN- GLUE the BASTING (SewLine glue stick) on my hexi and it's worked NICELY. Now the papers are MUCH easier to remove❣But don't use steam.
So glad I found your channel. I have lots of scraps and thought I would do some EPP. I usually use glue but was having trouble with it sticking, Will be now using your method, thanks heaps.
You are so welcome! I struggled with the glue too for some reason and so many people like that method. I could never get it off the paper. Thanks for leaving a comment it really helps my channel to grow.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE EPP never thought I would like anything hand sewn but im addicted now. I do not like the glue method either so I thread baste the old way through the papers. I use a die cut machine to cut my hexis so im ok with not using the papers more than 3-4 times.
I am certainly going to try it your way. Gluing frustrated me and your removing the paper before stitching hexagons together makes a lot of sense my needle will certainly go through material easier not hitting the paper and glue as I was trying to do. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for your comment, I've been doing more English paper piecing just recently and yes gluing was frustrating. Basting the stitches is much better and it does get more easier over time. English paper piecing is a great little past time away from the sewing machine. I really enjoy it!!
I am currently doing an EPP project, a quilt with vintage looking fabric. I used glue and the papers are falling out and it has become a mess. lol It is just for me, so I am not worried about how it turns out too much, I consider it a learning experience. I love to do hand sewing, but I am either going to have to baste in the papers, or use that foam product that you leave in. So I watched your video with great interest. Thanks for making it.
I have just started my first EPP project yesterday and enjoying it. Found you for the first time tonight. I am going to go check out what you have made with your EPP. See you there so to speak. 👍
This is totally different then other videos I have watched they either glue or baste with thread and leave papers in till the project is done..they whip stitch and they continuesly stitch till they run out of thread..they say a break in the thread will lead to trouble down the road...I am just learning I am a quilter and sewer for a few years..always love to try new sewing projects...I will try yours to see how it feels...Im in Indiana in the USA...
I am trying EPP for the first time, and testing the glue, with the material cut out with the rotary pattern. I like your way, the presser is adorable and works well. The pattern is too close to the size of the paper to get the stitches in as it is too close to the edge. I have not yet gotten to taking out the paper, so it is good to know there is another way.
I use a dab of glue stick in the center of the hexi to keep it in the middle of my fabric. I then stitch baste but NOT through the paper. I sew all the “petals” on the middle hexi then easily remove the paper from the middle hexi only so I can bend the middle to stitch the petals together. Then I press. Easier to travel with. It’s actually quite a quick process and the paper removes very easily because there is only one very small glue spot on the back of each piece. Thoughts on my process??
I really enjoy foundation piecing and I'm getting ready to try EPP. Just working out what method is going to get me started the easiest! Thanks for showing your method. :)
Hello Cassie! It's soooo good to see you! I'm finally getting back to sewing. Paper Piecing is very interesting. I may try it sometime. Please show us your finished project. Please tell mom hi for me! 🤗🦋

I've just posted a very similar iron on my amazon page, www.amazon.com/shop/faodailcreation?listId=1N5ERRM2P7PF8 I may get a small commission if you chose to purchase. The wonderfil you will have to go into a retail quilting store for I don't think you can purchase it on line. Thank you very much for leaving this comment
Have you made a full quilt? Pulling the papers is fine for one “flower”, but the paper give the fabric the stability and strength when you are talking about 50 or 60 being sewn together. The pull of the weight would be to much without the paper.
I love paper piecing, but I love it because it is portable. Your method is definitely not portable due to the ironing. I have absolutely no trouble using sew line glue. Paper come right out. If I do baste I just hold it in my hand, turn one edge over, start basting. No clips. I feel you have too many steps. That being said, it’s everybody’s preference.
I have recently started using glue while english paper piecing for the same reason of it being portable. I do love both methods for doing my english paper piecing.
Just made a comment on your other one. I hate using glue personally. All my fabric permanently got stuck to the paper so I was the other way around to you. Lol
Im brand new to EPP and you were so informative as well as positive.
You will be my EPP expert to go to
I love your comment so very much thank you!! ❤️

Awesome

I use the cricut to cut the hexagons too, I've also started to use glue. Enjoy english paper piecing is rather addictive
Yes! I use my Sizzix to cut my papers. It's cheaper and rather fun!🙂
I will try your method tomorrow thank you.
You're welcome. Try everything and find out what works best for you

Very different method than I use. I may try it on my next project. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome
Oh I will try your method as I like the pressing as it makes it look better. Not sure about taking papers out but I will give it a try!!
Keep the papers in, that's the only thing I would change about this video. Thank for your comment

I havent started to create a quilt just yet with them. It's taking longer than I thought. Lol

Aww, thank you. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial.

Maybe I should look I to this. The problem I've had with glue is the fabric is very hard to take away from the paper.

The glue is water solvable, get a water sprizer and spray with a bit of water and it should ease up the glue to remove the paper
I just started paper pierce and I love it.
Me too. Thanks for the comment
I use glue, for me it’s easier than basting. I did like watching you stitch. I’m anxious to see what you’re going to make with your hexi’s next week.
I've made a few different things with english paper piecing now, check out my channel playlist.
Good video, thank you I’m trying to learn the basting method
Try both and see what you like. Thank you for your comment
Thanks for the tutorial. I appreciate you sharing your strategy for organizing the projects.

My manager was telling me about EPP the other day. She doesn’t use glue either. I now have to give this a try

Just learning how to EPP,
It's very relaxing if you like hand sewing. Enjoy
I love EPP ❤. I have tried glue method but enjoy the sewing method best .I also like the scrappy look . Enjoyed yourvideo .

I normally thread baste through the papers. I didn’t like the glue very much. I can this method working when your papers are smaller. 👍🏻
I didn't like using the glue either. this method is way better
Have you tried water soluble thread?
I actually haven't I know people use it for basting their binding down too

Hi, nice to see your name back. I'll say hi to my mom for you 🙂 this method is so much better than the glue method.
I'm just starting to make these. I have quilt my husband's grandmother made 90 years ago and a few are worn out. I want to replace them.
That's fantastic.
