  • Which one should I choose? This video might help you decide. Enjoy!
Here we've got 3 stairs in a row.
    1. Ships Ladder
    2. Alternating-tread device
    3. Conventional stair
We build a lot of alternating stairs but occasionally someone wants a ships ladder. It's not quite as comfortable to climb since the treads aren't normally as wide but its a great option for someone who want the look of a ships ladder. The ladder in this picture has a graspable handrail integrated into the right and left stringers.
Now I'll walk up and down these to illustrate. As you can see, my size 11 shoes are quite a bit longer than the width of the treads on the ships ladder. On the other hand, the alternating tread device has ample room for my foot.
Some of you will prefer a ships ladder, others an alternating stair and still others will prefer to stick with a conventional stair. Let us know if we can build one of these three for you.

I first saw this type of alternating staircase in a Norwegian show renovating summer houses. In Norway they apparently call it ""sambatrappe" (samba stairs), which I thought was kinda cute.

Are these building code compliant, whether to a loft, attic, or unfinished cellar?

Yes, they are code-compliant if a person builds them correctly. i’ll be happy to send you a copy of the Visual illustration of the building code if you send me your email address. My email is toptreadstairways@gmail.com

    Thanks for sharing.
Have you ever built an alternating tread device for an rv? To get from the inside to a rooftop deck?

No, I haven’t, but I’d love to build one for you. Let me know the overall rise and send me a picture of the location you hope to install it. My email address is toptreadstairways@gmail.com

Thank you for the video. For the sake of engineering science, & in order to make a fair assessment, I think what we really need to see is an attractive woman, in a short skirt and high heels, navigate them! That's not quite as puerile as it sounds. It seems that the alternating stairs requires a broader beam, e.g. distance between feet, and knee lift (hence the skirt request).
You could repeat the same experiment with a large dog too! By which I mean a four legged one.
    Certainly food for thought.
