Best intro yet! lol Seeing you trying to understand their concept and the companies choices in presenting them is quite amusing. They really go all in on the story they have. My only thing is that it's somewhat shown and somewhat said, though they aren't always the connecting pieces of the puzzle. I can see how they're still part of the whole picture, but it still leaves a lot of context to be filled in to understand the details. The song overall grew on me after a few listens, but I'm happy I finally have some b-sides to enjoy with one of their releases. Good stuff that's not your typical girl group music.

I totally get the comments about how this wasn't as expressive as what some of us are used to. I feel like idol groups nowadays really just need to look chic and cool since a lot of the storytelling can be done with the assistance of visual effects and with supplementary videos, wherein older MVs, it was the idol's job-on top of singing/dancing-to tell a story with their expressions and line delivery. Also on the point of the sets, I feel like SM needs to shoot their MV's on location beyond sets because it can really feel boxy. LOVED the MV, but I totally get the comments you made as someone who's an older Kpop fan and as someone who ALSO loves live stages a little more, too!

Aespa are the beginning of SMCU which will be portrayed through CAWMAN (Cartoon, Animation, Webtoon, Motion Graphics, Avatar, and Novel) video genre.
Other SM groups ( Exo, NCT, Red Velvet) have the same or more lore and will be part of SMCU. Its been heavily promoted by SM CEO Lee Sungsoo, and also by Siwon from Super Junior.

True! Aespa, pixy and loona are probably the only 4th gen groups who focuses on their lore in every cb. Three of them has different lores which is very interesting. loona 's lore is probably the most complicated lore I've ever seen. Dreamcatcher has lores but I'm not sure if it's permanent like the other three groups. Sorry for my English!

Personally i like aespa the most than other girls groups in korea, gens 3 or 4. I dont have to think what music they used or what genre they use because i'm not music expert. For people like me, what kind of music we like is pure because of personal preference. I think most of kpop producers also making music because of what usually people like, that's why most of them prefer produces music that tend to easy listening. And since i'm type of "out of comfort zone", i enjoy very very much SM experimental music with their artists.

In different genres, these are called anti-climax songs. You basically expect a climax, chorus, refrain with melody and so on, and aespa purposely does not deliver that. Personally, I am not a fan either coz it's much harder to sing along or get into the song.

  • @estebanj.3862

So this is my appreciation of this song... I feel like this song is so dystopian in the sense that i can see a movie set on a dystopian future and this song playing in the intro shot as we are introduced to the world of the movie and this aspect is reflected in the video and the camera work
Then the song is separated in different parts that allow each member to show their own individual skills! And every part works as a part of something bigger that is the whole song

aespa imo is that kind of artist so immersed in their storyline that it's hard for outsiders to keep up with it. i still appreciate it tho and it must be so hype for the fandom that's into the lore and stuff. the structure of the song is a risk for sure but it grew on me after a few listens, I loved the rap and the vocals tho. as for the mv i have no idea what's going on but hey, it looks pretty cool, I like the cyberpunk vibe they have going on

I agree, I didn't really get into it at first and while seeing the choreo improved it a lot for me, I think there are things that they tried here in the production of the song that didn't really work out. There's so much going on that I was almost forced to focus on the more empty parts, and while this works in a lot of anti-drop songs (songs where the chorus is more bare instrumentally than the prechorus), it didn't quite work for me in this one?
Also, the sound editing for the ending strikes me as somewhat bizarre, as Winter and Ningning's vocals are incredible and definitely being highlighted, but there are so many layers of other sound that I can't really enjoy it?
On the other hand, seeing them perform the choreography makes the chorus SO much more enjoyable, even to listen to afterwards. That sort of robotic sound effect with the spoken chorus and the knee movements really all work together, and combine to create something cohesive even though it's quite bare.
I wish the girls vocal skills were being used more. Like, I get the synthetic atmosphere, but maybe they could experiment with auto-tune and vocal tracks doing some of that work, because for young performers they have very expressive and powerful voices that display a whole range of emotions.
As for their facial expressions, I think that's a rookie thing that they will develop more with time, and familiarity with their own music. I didn't realize how long the song was and how extensive the choreo until I watched their choreo video, and with how much they pay attention to the zooming camera angles, I think they're very focused on nailing the choreo and keeping eye contact with the camerawork, so their expressions are like, a whole next level, if you will, lol.
Excited to see their stages, where their charisma, control, and talent really shines! I like the choreo to this a lot better than Next Level, even if I like Next Level more as a song, because I think it's less dependent on camerawork. One of these days we're going to get moments of genuine confidence and on the spot smirking from these girls with this performance, and I can't wait for it!

I truly consider Aespa to be the musical sister counterpart of NCT 127 (which isn’t surprising since SM does brother/sister groups often) so I’m not surprised that people have had a tough time adjusting to their sound but I really hope the heavy dedication to the AI concept and the whole KWANGYA/COSMOS storyline doesn’t hinder them in the future. The space warrior storyline thing has been woven into just about every SM artist’s concept and you can tie the threads that supposedly make this extended universe across years of releases but Aespa is rooted into the concept in a way the others aren’t. Even EXO, who debuted with the planetary defenders concept didn’t have to play into it for each release. Aespa is more like a movie we’re supposed to be following so I don’t when or if the group will ever be able to deviate. I’m also finding less use for the Æs at this point but maybe I’m just already getting bored of their design

No it's not just you, I loved Black Mamba, Next Level took a little while to grow on me, I'm not entirely sure if this one will. I've never been crazy about rap heavy tracks with any group. NCT is like that for me, there is definitely no doubt about the vocal abilities of either group, but I prefer more melodic songs.

It’s rare to hear something within that sound but it can also be very limiting in my opinion when a group acts all bubbly all the time it just it feels less authentic = less fans. It’s just how the industry is nowadays...the most popular groups (besides Twice) have all made it internationally due to the fact that they aren’t being pigeonholed/forced into doing something so bubble gum pop. For you to really get into aespa, you kinda have to appreciate the cringe behind the group’s concept, lore, etc. Not everyone is THAT devoted so I def understand why people would be taken aback. What I like about them, is that since they’re in SM, their songs are experimental as fuck and I am living for it, they’re guaranteed to succeed too especially with how Koreans loved Next Level (and Savage)

Sera does probably the most intelligent reactions of anyone on RUclips, and, having been a K-Pop Idol/Star and leader of Nine Muses for almost five years, no other reactor or critic has more credentials than Sera. When Sera finds a Music Video confusing or just plain bad, there is almost certainly a good reason. I agree with Sera 100% on this one. I actually loved Aespa’s Black Mamba and Next Level, but after seeing/listening to this one several times, I’ve come to the conclusion that yes, the vocals of the girls are wonderful, the visuals are very entertaining, but this song and video as a whole are not good (I was going to say “crap”, but I held back).

    • @AXSofHFDS
      @AXSofHFDS 3 года назад +2

This new hip-hop kpop stuff is hard to swallow for traditional kpop fans. And if a song is a "grower", then that means you don't like it and you forced yourself to like it. Every aespa song is like 4 to 5 songs in one.

@@AXSofHFDS well the thing is I actually do like it a lot but it does sound like a bunch of songs in one. • @semsclassic1750

@@AXSofHFDS I don't think that's 100% true 100% of the time. Yes there are definitely a lot of kpop fans who forcefeed music to their ears just because it's the ~right thing to do for their fave~ and I do believe there are many things to say about that but speaking from personal experience, I might dislike a song at the very first listen but find myself intrigued enough to listen a second and third time. Next level in particular had a lot of sounds and rhythms I was completely into but got wildly confused at the tempo change and initially decided it wasn't for me, but I could still think of some parts a few days later and decided to listen to it again just to scratch the itch. I still didn't like all of it but felt compelled to listen for the highlights I did love, and it ended up as one of my most played song of the year. To me that's a big part of what makes good pop music and particularly kpop music - it's finding the right balance between strangely constructed to make it sound fresh and new but still provide enough familiarity and / or earworm-worthy parts that catch the listener and make them want to give it another go.

People said that about Next Level. Didn't happen.
Sometimes a song just doesn't click and I get the feeling this is one of them, at least for me. I'm not going to force myself to listen to it over and over again hoping it will grow in me. I can usually tell within the first 2 or 3 listens if a song is going to be playlist material.
No hate towards Aespa. They're obviously very talented. I also applaud SM's willingness to experiment with with their music. But their last 2 songs just didn't do it for me.
