    Like to give you a tomato-tip.🍅
    Save the skins from the tomatoes and drie them. Then you just chrush them and put them in to a coffegrinder and your' done.
    Now you have a tomatopowder that will give you a wounderful and richer flavour to your tomatodishes.
    I just love to do this.👏👏
    Mabye this is another job for your daughter.😉 Tomatohugs to you all.

    I don't often leave comments on YT videos. I subscribe, share, and assume you can feel my love from Texas. But I felt moved to pause the video right in the middle and let you know what a difference you have made in my life just now. I'm disabled and part of that is having limited use of my hands some times. It's unpredictable and worsening, but I'm the kind of person who tries to carry on with things I love to do. Like gardening. But I had to bail on my garden last summer due to unexpected side effects of cancer treatment. I didn't even watch your videos for a few months, which is how I'm just seeing this now. I'm planting again this spring with so much hope in my heart, but I'm forcing myself a little bit because I don't want to have my heart broken again. The technique you shared for coring and scoring your tomatoes to freeze and peel gives me confidence that my family can use what I grow even if I have a bad hand day (or week). Coring and scoring is easy enough that my kids could do it. I've got lots of freezer space and a huge rotation of freezer bags I clean and reuse. You just changed my whole outlook, just in time for the garden planning I'm doing this week. No more fear of being overrun with tomatoes that will get old before they're used, I've got a great trick for getting to them when I can WITHOUT PEELS! I'm going to plant the varieties I want and let'em rip! I can't wait to be canning! When you speak of your heart for sharing gardening, I want you to know that it's working. Thank you.

    My mom used to make a side dish with tomatoes (sometimes canned stewed, but occasionally freshly stewed) with torn up buttered toast. I LOVED it. I found out when I got older that it was a Depression era recipe that was often a main dish during tomato harvest time throughout the summer and fall.
    Now I have to try making that again and also learn how to make bruschetta.

    I've only watched that movie once. I'm definitely going to have to check to see if it's on Amazon Prime or Netflix and watch it again. Even if I have to pay to download it, it's worth watching again. I've never made bruschetta, but maybe I'll have to bake some French baguettes just so I can have it without having to leave the house.
    Now, while you still have cucumbers, you've got to try what I had for dinner last night - a cucumber sandwich. Now, it wasn't just any ordinary cucumber sandwich. I started with homebaked buns, spread both cut sides with a cream cheese, lemon juice, and dill mixture, then layered on fresh cucumbers, onion slices, tomato, lettuce, and grated carrot. I could eat that every day and gain 15 pounds this summer.

    4:07 Omg Jess, I water my garden by hand, one pitcher at a time, from my kitchen sink. It is time consuming and exhausting. I hope to be able to afford to have new spigots installed, and do a drip system. Even just a hose would be better than what I have now. I'm so glad you told us this. You know what it feels like!

    • @cherylanderson3340
      @cherylanderson3340 4 года назад +2

      Ke Le: If your kitchen sink is near a window, & you can open that window & lift up the screen, you can feed a garden hose of the correct diameter, through that window. Unscrew the aerator or screen off the end of the kitchen faucet. You can find a hose to fit your faucet by bringing the screen or aerator from home to the hardware department to find a garden hose female end that fits the threads of your kitchen faucet.
      Next, buy an adjustable spray end with an on/off feature, & attach to the male end of the hose. Put it on off. Best to water early in the day when soil & roots are at their coolest. If soil is warm or hot but you must water, turn on some warm water to mix & slightly warm up the cold tap water, so it won't shock hot plants with cold water.
      Most likely, you'll need to find a lightweight hose with a narrow diameter to match the sink faucet, or change the kitchen fixture. If hose won't reach garden areas, either buy more hose or fill buckets or large watering cans from the too short hose in the meantime so you won't have to carry it that far - meaning over the entire distance..
      Turn the kitchen cold water on full, if AM watering just as sun is rising. Water soil thoroughly, but, not on the flowers or the leaves to prevent mildew. For the same reason, avoid watering late in the day. It's best if leaves & stems have dried off before nightfall, when temps may drop.
      If it's really hot out, but you must water, you'll want to mix in some hot water so plants aren't shocked by a much colder water on their roots & stems, & again try to water the soil deeply, but don't do what I used to do - thinking the plants would love to be showered well to cool them down. I lost my roses that way. They were a few months old, looking great & blooming.
      The next day I saw that I'd damaged all the beautiful flowers.
      Later, due to my evening watering, a ritual I enjoyed as it was so peaceful for me, after my family had enjoyed their supper, so I had that nice time to spend with my new gardens & it felt good to water everything. I'd imagined, by sunrise, they'd all be full of water & bear up under the hot sun. Instead, all my roses were soon covered with powdery mildew - which can kill a plant. Shock is a type of stress & stress in general, makes plants more vulnerable to pests & diseases. Mildew spores are in the soil, so when we water, it's best to water them by drip irrigation, or at least, if limited to a hose or watering can, to try to water so as we're not splashing soil up onto the lower stems & leaves of the plants. Some plants are more vulnerable than others, so it's best to just avoid letting water spray onto their lower leaves.
      If possible, feed the garden hose in through the open window, close the screen as much as possible, without crimping the hose, & temporarily stuff an old towel or crumpled up newspapers or paper bags to fill in the opened window space where screen is raised up, to keep insects from entering the house through that opening.
      Then go out & turn the water on, & run it a while test to see if it's extremely hot from lying in the sun. You don't want to scald your plants or your tender feet in flip flops, or your hands. Hopefully you are able to do this, until you can get an outdoor spigot.

    • @nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden
      @nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden 4 года назад +2

      Same! I can't connect a hose to the kitchen sink either as it's a square tap. My little garden tripled in size this year and it's taking me over an hour a day to water, so I feel your pain! Getting an outside tap fitted asap now people are working again after lockdown (I'm in the UK). A hose would be a huge luxury right now haha.

    • @cherylanderson3340
      @cherylanderson3340 4 года назад +1

      @@nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden Then too there's the passive collection of water running off our rooves, which can be channeled into rain collection barrels raised up on cinder blocks. This allows gravity to irrigate our garden beds, but I never got around to do that. I get good ideas then promptly forget them - so good now to be remembering, as we do have droughts. Not as extreme as where my brother lives, in Colorado, which is in a dire situation, year after year.
      Here in the states not all are allowed to do this - ie: CO. I live in Massachusetts & we usually have a generous amount of precipitation year 'round, so I've yearned for a cistern, but never took that step. complacency on my part, it seems, to lose track of the fact that we may have years of drought again.

    • @cherylanderson3340
      @cherylanderson3340 4 года назад

      @@MB-vi8zp Well you're in luck - it's a good time now to plant again! Depending on your zone, you may have enough good growing days left to direct sow now & squeeze in a fall harvest.

    Italian recipes vary greatly by region. In our house you have to add garlic to the bruschetta, rubbed on bread and either chopped and added to the tomatoes or add the whole cloves, let sit in the mixture for a bit and then removed so no one get a mouthful of raw garlic. I know some people who dice onion and add that which would be a sin in our family.

    Jess, I preordered your book on Amazon today!
    Also, have you tasted the thawed juice that comes out of the cored and scored tomatoes? It's really tasty. If I have time for a long simmer, I keep it with the tomatoes. Another use could be to save it and add to the stock when cooking stews, beans, etc.
    Thirdly, I am glad to see that you grow Carbon tomatoes. Along with Cherokee Purple, Carbon is one of the best slicers I grow. Love and hugs, from another southern gardener in North Carolina.

    Also that bruschetta, I've worked restaurants where that dish, ingredients bought at Green City Market Chicago, total cost per serving maybe $5, sold for $20. No heirlooms just regular red globe tomatoes, not multiple varieties of basil. I'm betting that could go for $50 on the right menu when Covid is over. I know you don't want to commit to supplying a restaurant full time but maybe during a once a year fundraiser for a charity you care about? Find some local chef you like and get him to come in and get some produce, maybe a hen or duck or two, and throw a party. I bet people would drive in from all over and pay whatever for it.
