Great video, camera angles, well edited, and great use of the 360 cam! Congratulations and enjoy your flying adventures! I just happen to be editing a Sonex Factory Tour episode as I type this.
Appreciate the feedback! Just learning the gopro 360 but it’s quite a powerful little tool. Might add another couple cameras to the airframe here in the near future. Best of luck!
I’ve been researching the hell out of what plane I should get, and the Sonex or Onex seem to be the ones for me lol. I plan on doing a build in a couple of years here when I have saved some money up for it, I’m gonna get my PPL in the mean time and hopefully be able to work on this soon enough! Any advice for when I inevitably build one?
Yeah, probably the biggest consideration should be the power plant. I’ve got this one tuned about as good as it’s gonna get right now but the aerovee is just a little underpowered in my opinion. Go with a UL power and I think you’ll avoid some of the Aerovee headaches and have ample power with the 107 hp engine. Otherwise the onex is a blast to fly. That’s really my only criticism with it.
@@LeanofPeakAviation I'll have to do more research on the UL power, I really am excited to try something out myself but am a newcomer so I need to educate myself on this stuff a lot more lol.
Thank you! It’s all in your mission. Eurostar is a cool little plane as well...probably a lot more practical as a traveler. Onex is the perfect toy plane when it’s just you wanting to have a little fun for an hour or two.
I'm building a Onex as a "backup" airplane that fits in my hangar with another plane. Perfect plane for pancake/burger fly-ins, and quick hops, fly while the other plane is down for maintenance, basic aerobatic capability, etc.
Wait a minute! At 1:00, you go into a simple aileron roll... BUT... the camera stays level with the horizon! HOW do you do that? I didn't see any hand movement to control / tell the camera to stay level and let the plane roll around it! I've gotta get a camera like that!
Lol!!! Gopro 360 max. It takes 360 degree footage at all times. You can edit it to keep the horizon level in the editing app. If you watch carefully you’ll see every view in this video is taken from one camera at the top of the canopy…just the perspective changes.
you should be able to check out in a regular Sonex as well. I've talked to the guys at Sonex about this before. The Onex is designed to fly very much like the Sonex 2-seater.
Things are running quite a bit better. Adding the #3 needle and tuning for the appropriate EGT spread has it making all the power and the temps are much more reasonable. That being said these Aerovee’s are never going to climb 800 fpm forever. You’ll get max rated hp for a few minutes and then you’ll have to pull back the throttle a bit and lower the nose for a reasonable cruise climb of 350 fpm or so. Temps come down quickly when entering a cruise. I’ll have a video update shortly. That’s for watching!
@@onemetre Rob, I did the lower cowling mod first. I noticed a couple of things immediately…there was an increase in both static and dynamic RPMs with a significant cooling effect to the fuel system which was previously vaporizing. The CHT’s didn’t seem to have much effect and I wasn’t getting the expected EGT spread with mixture changes. It seemed like it was suddenly running very lean. At that point I moved up to the number 3 needle and very near the initial setting I was seeing a proper EGT spread with mixture changes on the ground. In the air everything seemed to be running cooler at that point. Oddly, I’ve noticed what almost seems to be a ram-effect now. The mixture setting which gives me maximum RPM’s on the ground and during climb starts to seem lean again as I level out and pick up speed, with EGT’s rising as the airspeed rises at lower altitudes. I’m finding I need to enrich the mixture slightly at lower altitude cruise now, and slowly lean again as I climb higher. All in all the performance improved and I’m satisfied it’s performing about as well as a little Aerovee can. I’ll have some video updates coming soon but I wanted to put some hours on it before jumping into an update.
@@LeanofPeakAviation the way I understood it was EGT spread from full rich to lean is 100F on the ground with wide open throttle. I've since gone to Rich enough to not overheat on the ground at full throttle but lean enough to still idle...work in process... I have a modified number two in it right now.
There’s a thing that happens to pilots which is that all their friends and family make sure to send them links to every small plane crash that happens everywhere. We get it.
You can find them used from about $20,000 and up. Brand new you’ll have to build it yourself. Wide range depending on what you put in it. Figure anywhere from $35,000-45,000 by the time you’re done. I got this one second hand.
Add a smoke system this one and the jet is the best two sonex makes really the 2 seaters are too small for two in reality mostly just fly it left seat I rather just be a one seat like this.
@@LeanofPeakAviation I love the concept, just feel the design could have been much better thought out....but still a cool plane...a rotax 912 I'm sure would give it great performance

That might be the coolest Onex paint job ever
your video took my after-work stress away thank you - now if only I could fly one myself...
Man that’s a great compliment. I Really appreciate it. I would highly encourage you to try flying if you’re interested.
So nice, mellow and precise.
Thank you.
Fly NAVY!
Awesome video! Makes me want to finish my sonex.
Do it! Do it now!!!!
Awesome flying!
Thank you! It’s a blast.
Great video! I need the inspiration to finish my Onex.
Oh man you’re gonna love it. I absolutely love the way it flies.
Thats an amazing bird. Good job.
holy moly this is sick! I need one of these
Super fun vid and camera!!
Thanks man, appreciate your content as well!
sonex vs Onex is one designer? or different
Same company, Sonex has 2 seats ONEx has one.
Wow, Good stuff. Congrats.
Thank ya!
Great job. Love the new video.
Great video. How long did it take you to build it?

Very inspiring

What are the flying characteristics of the Onex? Is it stable on all axis? Is it suitable for long cross-country (3-4 hour legs)? Thanks.
Very nice video. The OneX is a great design that would tempt me from my Eurostar

VERY NICE!!!!!!! Aerovee engine????
Yessir. Aerovee (non-turbo) with the standard sensenich 54/44 wood composite prop and a fresh air cowl mod.
amazing! what song did you use?
Gopro has a list of license-free music in their editing software. Unfortunately I don’t have the name of it.

so do you get osme training fly a regular sonex before you just hop in a onex?
My CFI got me checked out in an RV7 which is a similar enough airframe. It was a good transition trainer. The Onex was easier to fly.

Still having overheating issues? Last video you mentioned adjusting the carb and mixture settings. Did that take care of it?
