For real bro! But also for real I'm so blind that without mine it would be illegal for me to drive a car let alone fly a plane! Lol I think even with mine and having a 65" 4k/120 OLED I'd have to get within 6-12 inches of the screen and have my peripheral vision buried before I could really tell. It definitely has its negatives for sure but man does it make it easy to ignore the little stuff.
I've had the same experience, it absolutely hates controllers being plugged in and out while it's running and will almost always crash. USB connectors on PS4 and Xbox One controllers are kind of unreliable so I'm glad I'm using wireless.
30fps locked at ultra is the new target for me, and i'll be super happy with that. For some reason flight sim always looks smooth at 30, unlike other games.
Never use Realtime unless it's literally the ONLY thing the machine has to do, which is never the case with games. It makes the game run at a higher priority than basic windows functions. You can get delays in sound delivery, frame delivery to the gpu and way more delays on an almost driver level.
This is excellent. I have a 2070 super and was set by default to “high-end”. I was getting a super glitchy 30-50 FPS. I updated these settings and then was getting 80-90 FPS. Updated to “Ultra” and turned down the settings you mentioned and now I’m at a solid 60 FPS. Excellent. Thanks 👍🏻
I have a 2070 super as well and im sure as hell not getting what youre getting with these settings.. Still never getting more than 25fps... Amazing how the sim can be so horrendously broken for some, and working decent for others..
The Gaming Norwegian I have to admit. The 60FPS was in countryside scenery and so it much going on. When I went to a city it dropped to about 30-40fps. I went back to high-end settings and it’s back up at 60 in dense places and higher when in countryside.
You should do a updated guide on MSFS especially with 3rd party add on developers making study level aircraft such as PMDG, Fenix, and FlyByWire. And the same applies to add on scenery as well.
Hey Jay, I really appreciated this video. I’ve been a flight simulator enthusiast my whole life since FS 5 way back in the day. I would definitely like to see you use FS 2020 to benchmark new hardware in the future.
I have a 2060 Super OC Msi card and followed all of you're steps and have been getting around 50-55 fps in populated cities without turning the settings down from the 2080Ti settings you started using before you switched to the 2060 super! Thanks for the great tips!
Ryzen 5 2600x , Radeon RX 580 8gb, 16gb DD4 , Installed on SSD. 15 Hours played so far with average 53 FPS. Playing on recommended high settings and everything just looks amazing. 1 crash so far only , PC isn't even that noisy, seemed to calm down after playing it for a few hours! Didn't work on 1st install so installed again overnight and now plays like a dream.
@@bearwynn Demanding physics renderings used for research are also measured in seconds per frame, but in this case the rendering takes several double or triple digit unit of seconds to complete which is insane
Actually you do need around 45 minimum for a proper performance in Sims, I’ve been a developer for X plane for 3 years making airports. And enthusiast for over 20 years. If you drop below 30 you will have time delay issues. Also steam my name you will see the airports created by me.
30FPS is fluid but feels a little bit slow and laggy, especially when the sim has RAM-related micro stutterings and camera pan stutters when running out of RAM and VRAM. 45FPS is ideal in most games, but only the new high-end graphics cards will bring 60-100FPS with everything maxed out and new 4k textures and 4k shadow maps graphics settings which will hopefully get implemented soon in FS2020, because the graphics can NEVER be stunning and amazing enough! Are you programming airports for FS2020 too? I am looking for some beautyful ultra-detailed bush flight adventure airports in Canada and Alaska for Alaskan cargo freights with Cessna Caravan and stuff like that :)
You have saved this sim for me. All I wanted was a solid 30-35 FPS to practice the approaches I shoot IRL, and until your vid, have t been able to. I have an i7 6700k with 32GB RAM and until yesterday, had a GTX 1070 but went out and got an RTX 2070 Super because I was so pissed at the performance. It was all the same, on 1080 res high settings I was getting 5-7FPS on the ground, 14-25 FPS in the air. Flying around densely populated areas and big airports saw it crash to 10-7FPS. I went in and changed the 3D settings to Performance and that was the golden ticket. It freed up everything. I can crank it to ultra now on 1080 and get a liquid smooth 38-45FPS (in the sim world, this is liquid smooth). I was about to resign to the idea that I needed a new CPU and RTX 2080ti or 3080 (when they release) to even partially enjoy this. Thank you!!
I would love to see an updated performance guide for this game in VR now. So hard to run it, SteamVR, plus an Edge window and OVR Toolkit for Twitch chat. Uses so much of my CPU. Highest FPS I can get is around 20 on low settings.
Perfect day. I finally realized I was on the 2 GHz net not the 5 GHz, finished downloading MS FS 2020, got my broken crap cooler to start working decently on my 10600k and this video came out. Thanks

It was so fun watching this. It reminds me of the good old days trying to squeeze every fps I could out of games. The game may/may not be optimized but, it brings fun with trying to get max performance out of it. =)
Upgraded from an I5-4670K to a 5600x. Same GPU. GTX 1030 3gb. I can get 60fps in areas. Got 50fps close to the ground in Osaka. All over Manhattan, under 1000ft and 40+ fps. Pleasantly surprised. I have a 1070ti on the way though, and the 1060 will go back in the old PC. Can't wait to try it out again!
Thanks for the video! It was very helpful to see someone more knowledgeable than me talk through these tweeks. I have a Legion tower with an i9-9900 cpu, 32 gb of RAM, and a RTX 2070 GPU with a 2560x1080/144hz display. I found most of the suggested changes to NVIDIA's 3D settings didn't make much of a noticeable difference to my FPS, nor does turning Game Mode on or off in Windows settings. The most notable differences I found are in the sim itself. I have tried the graphic settings you suggested. FS2020 suggested during install that I run the sim on the 'High-End' level. I have tried 'Ultra' and tend to lose about 15 fps. I also gain about 15 fps over 'High-End' if I use all 'Middle' level settings. Dialing the graphic settings you mentioned to Middle or lower does give me about a 5 fps improvement. Two other things I have learned could be helpful: - I find significantly more stutter when I have 'Show Traffic Nameplates' turned on (in Traffic settings) especially if there are alot of other planes around, and - I find I can lose as much as 15-20 fps if I have pop-out windows open (to display menus on a second or third monitor). My second and third monitors really slow the sim down (they are also only 60hz). I would suggest keeping the menus on the main screen. Hope these are useful tips.
@@cytrus3427 bruh why would he run it in raid0 like ye there are some speed benefits but then he needs to get another drive aswell and its not worth it
What I would really like is some options to configure dynamic degradation. For example, simple aircraft in low density scenery, Ultra could be an option but in high density scenery with a complex panel aircraft, some things have to be sacrificed. I don't want to have to configure one set of settings for everywhere, how about the ability to set my priority as to what to reduce first, to meet a desired frame rate.
Disabling Windows Defender everytime I start MFS helps me a lot with the stutters. GTX1660 9600K 16gb. I'm okay with MFS performance but it's not as smooth as XP11 for me.
Oh and also disabling the gamertags with multiplayer/live traffic gained me 15-20(!!)fps in busy areas. I'm sure Asobo will fix the bugs and optimization.
@@DerekMoore82 Go to your 'Virus & threats protection' tab in windows security. Scroll down 'Manage settings' click on it and toggle off 'real time protection'. It'll automatically go on again after rebooting the system.
@@Nathan_Jay That's true but please don't get me wrong. I freaking love MFS and I'm very excited for the future of flight sim in general. TBH The performance is way better than I've expected with my system and the awesome graphics we get. It took FSX a very long time to get to this kind of performance on high-end systems.
Thank you Jay and team. Good researching and I never really messed with Nvidia game settings before. From 17-20fps to 25 with just that suggestion. Actually makes a huge difference in low altitudes and taxiing around my favorite airport , KFXE. Improved ground scenery also.
Helpful info. I'm sitting happy on high 1080 settings at only 32fps, but with terrain and object detail set to 120. The frames and quality of photogrammetry looks incredibly smooth on that rig. Great Job.
or in dev mode in game itself, they can display a lot of info like what's bottlnecking, gpu or cpu and they color code every frame in a graph. its great
@@SpeedRacer24X You go in the options, general (where graphics are) then at the bottom there's "dev mode". You enable that, then a black bar pops up at the top of the screen. Then look through the menus as I don't remember which one has it, probably Options or Windows, and then you'll be able to select the frames or FPS tool.
In the last 38 years of running this sim, no new hardware has ever been able to run it full up at max frame rates, it is the same with every release. Due to the long cycle between versions, they build in graphics settings that will need to be stepped up to as new hardware becomes available. It has always been this way and is this way again with MSFS 2020. The sim does not need to be run at 60 fps to enjoy, just not 20 fps, somewhere in the 30-40 range is perfect. (not referrring to VR)
From someone with similar experience, I agree with you. 60+ is obviously ideal for any game/sim to be 'liquid smooth'. But for Flight Simulators over the years, 30fps+ is adequate for an enjoyable experience. Although, in my opinion, MS really jumped the gun on this release. It's still poorly optimized and has too many crash issues to be fully enjoyed.
Im blown away by this simulator, with fsx and xplane i could never manage more than 20 to 25 fps but with msfs 2020 after making these changes im flying around Manhattan at 100+ fps with an R7 1700 and 1080ti, cant believe it.
Pro tip: Set your Windows clock ahead, up to 1 hour. It tricks the MSFS2020 app into thinking it is later than it actually is and reduces load times to zero. 1 hour may be a bit too aggressive though and it can be reduced by 10 minute increments until there's no negative side effects like loading the game before you've even launched it. With this method, you'll also potentially see much improved fps, as it allows the gpu to pull frames from the future, up to the advanced time you set in Windows. This is known as Temporal Caching and requires the latest Nvidia drivers for Turing cards. If you enjoyed this tip, please consider donating to my Gofunkme account that I'm using to raise funds to buy bridges.

I'd recommend setting GPU Power management mode in global settings to Adaptive. There's shouldn't be any change in performance, and instead of staying at base clocks when idle, the GPU downclocks. Changing from Maximum Performance to Adaptive yielded me the same performance, and idle temps went from 44C to 31C If it makes a big difference in performance for FS2020, perhaps just set it to run Maximum Performance only when FS2020 is launched under program settings.

Saw a fix a reddit that has given lots of people amazing results. The issue they discovered is that by prioritizing MSFS in your system, it’s using up all the CPU and some background processes that the sim needs to run properly are getting squeezed out and that’s causing the sim to freeze and stutter. The fix includes changing the processor scheduling to “background processes” instead of “programs”. Also download the app called “Process Lasso”. Open Process Lasso and doable ProBalance in the settings. Now open MSFS can start a flight. Flying around for a few minutes and get a feel for the amount of stuttering and see what your FPS is averaging. Now Pause your flight and hit the Windows button on your keyboard to switch back to the Process Lasso app. In the Process Lasso app locate FlIghtSimulator.exe and right click. Then disable “Windows Dynamic thread priority boosts” for FlIghtSimulator.exe. Do not do this last step unless you already have MSFS running and you’re in a flight. Now keep Process Lasso running and switch back to MSFS. Unpause your flight and see if the stuttering is better and if your getting higher fps. Unfortunately you will have to follow these steps every time you want to use MSFS because the settings you changed in Process Lasso for MSFS will revert after you close MSFS. Here the whole fix in Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/flightsim/comments/ifle4x/huge_performance_booststutter_reduction_by/? And here’s another related fix for how to change your “Processor Scheduling” from “programs” to “Backgrounds Processes”: www.reddit.com/r/flightsim/comments/idmdqq/update_msfs_2020_stuttering_when_window_focused/? Both of these fixes actually deprioritize MSFS on your PC and prioritize background processes, but amazingly tons of people have had incredible improvement to the stability of MSFS with much less stuttering and freezing and much higher FPS after making the changes recommended in these Reddit posts. Good luck!
Nearly doubled my frame rate. So a massive thanks! I run a 9900k with 32gb of ram at 3600mhz and a 1080ti. All storage drives are nvme. I have a 1440p screen and was getting 30-40 fps. Now I'm up to 60-70, and it's much more consistent.
Don't forget that the Vehicles category under General Settings has a big effect on framerates. Turning up or down the number of planes (parked and AI), boats, and cars makes a big change on FPS.
Ambient Occlusion is also a big fps killer in most games. If you can handle not having contact shadows I'd suggest turning it off if you want better performances.
Thanks a lot. I am still with the old FSX but plan to move to 2020 soon. I will buy a new system first. Might wait for a 6 months or a year so that system is just ... less expensive. Good to see the 2060 at work as well. Of all of the folks who review and show us how to make 2020 work, you are the best. You explain it all very well.
This is actually really useful information! i used a bit of your previous Flight Sim footage in a spec detail and game review (hope you don't mind) it shows i might be able to run this myself if i bite the bullet and buy the game! Love the content as usual!
And completely wasted on MSFS which needs like 6-7 threads overall (don't look at the CPU usage numbers, they don't tell you anything). But that goes for the vast majority of games.

Microsoft Simulator always releases with where most pc's can't handle everything at max settings. Future tech I guess. MSFS 2020 will now be on everyone's benchbark :D
I don't know what is this nonsense everyone is talking about, I play on ultra on 2k resolution with rtx 2070 and 4770k and get 35fps, and it is smooth as butter. There are games where I can't live with less than 120fps,and then there is this, where 35fps flying in Cessna around world is just fine
@@ZheikoNileth maybe 35 fps for you is fine, but 35fps is pretty low for my tastes. And I will agree that MSFS 2020 looks stunning visually. You cannot argue that this Sim is very demanding which is my point. Higher frames makes controlling the aircraft feel more responsive. Jay getting the game to have 50-60fps is great!
I am coming from racing sim, so I know exactly what you mean by having more response. Having ffb steering wheel running on game that runs on 30fps vs 120fps is massive difference, but with planes, unless you are doing acrobatics, you need a slow and steady smál inputs anyways, right?
Zheiko Nileth depends on what you are doing, playable yes but more frames do make it easier. Especially for certain complicated instrument approaches with windy conditions etc.

The reason that fps in flight sims is very forgiving is that you don't have objects that move at high speed relative to the screen (since you are high up and everything is far away so moves slowly). The horizon moves and rotates relatively slowly too, whatever you do.

When you get seconds per frame instead of frames per second
Just Brilliant! lmao
This is known as the late 90s gaming experience.
Seconds per frame is actually how you properly measure performance, ie 0.016 seconds (16ms) per frame is 60 fps
@@bearwynn Demanding physics renderings used for research are also measured in seconds per frame, but in this case the rendering takes several double or triple digit unit of seconds to complete which is insane
Rendering of the Lion King 2019 was 82 hours per frame so be happy with your seconds
Actually you do need around 45 minimum for a proper performance in Sims, I’ve been a developer for X plane for 3 years making airports. And enthusiast for over 20 years. If you drop below 30 you will have time delay issues. Also steam my name you will see the airports created by me.
Emma Bentley oh hey! We briefly talked in a cpt Canada stream. Bentley gang.

Two other things I have learned could be helpful:
- I find significantly more stutter when I have 'Show Traffic Nameplates' turned on (in Traffic settings) especially if there are alot of other planes around, and
- I find I can lose as much as 15-20 fps if I have pop-out windows open (to display menus on a second or third monitor). My second and third monitors really slow the sim down (they are also only 60hz). I would suggest keeping the menus on the main screen.
Hope these are useful tips.

Why do you recommend turning game mode on? Everything else I read on the internet says to turn it off.
Makes games have a higher performance response
I'd recommend setting GPU Power management mode in global settings to Adaptive.
There's shouldn't be any change in performance, and instead of staying at base clocks when idle, the GPU downclocks. Changing from Maximum Performance to Adaptive yielded me the same performance, and idle temps went from 44C to 31C
If it makes a big difference in performance for FS2020, perhaps just set it to run Maximum Performance only when FS2020 is launched under program settings.
44C is still perfectly reasonable. It's when you start pushing close to 80c and above you don't want to remain there.

Good luck!

Don't forget that the Vehicles category under General Settings has a big effect on framerates. Turning up or down the number of planes (parked and AI), boats, and cars makes a big change on FPS.

Yea I'm not sure why people are complaining about FPS. My Asus 2060 is getting 80 with settings auto set by the simulator. Game still looks great. I will go in and tweak with what Jay did and see how it looks. Just mess with settings!!
How would you do this with Radeon?
same way
i love when people comment before the video even starts lol.
wait. i do that. 🤫
sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. If I change my mind for any reason I'll put an edit notation on my comment.

sweet i made it early, thanks for the tips!
The reason that fps in flight sims is very forgiving is that you don't have objects that move at high speed relative to the screen (since you are high up and everything is far away so moves slowly). The horizon moves and rotates relatively slowly too, whatever you do.
i just bought a pc with a i7 10700 k, 750 power supply, 16gigs 3200mhz ram. Asus prime Z490 wifi. Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti. I hope flight simulator runs well on it.
