- Joe Louis 207 lbs beat Abe Simon 255 lbs by TKO at 0:16 in round 6 of 15
Date: 1942-03-27
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
Referee: Eddie Joseph
World Heavyweight Championship (21st defense by Louis)
Simon bumped to No. 4 spot in the NBA rankings after his first encounter with Louis. He remained Top 10 contender since, despite scoring only two victories against Pete Tamalonis and James D. Turner, neither of whom were ranked by either NBA or The Ring magazine.
Bout official on February 25.
Louis was a 15-1 betting favorite.
There was a crowd of 18,220.
The gross gate was $132,420, and the net was $114,705.
The fight raised $64,980.02 for the Army Emergency Relief Fund. Louis donated his entire purse of $36,146. Promoter Mike Jacobs and Madison Square Garden contributed $25,131.85, and Simon gave $3,012.17.
Simon was floored late in rounds two and five, and he was saved by the bell each time. Simon was dropped again early in the sixth round and counted out by referee Eddie Joseph. Simon protested the stoppage, insisting he was up at the count of nine.
This was Louis' first professional fight without trainer Jack Blackburn, who was hospitalized in Chicago. Blackburn would die the following month.
Due to his Army service during World War II, Louis wouldn't defend his title again for four years and three months.
Joe Louis donated more than one purse to war effort relief funds. Nonetheless he was crucified by the shameless IRS. A great man treated so badly it should make you weep.
I agree. A heartless IRS and he could've been forgiven of the debt by any of the sitting Presidents. Sinatra got Louis the job as a greeter at the Sands.
It just comes to show that the government don't care about us,they don't care about our freedom they only care about their own freedom and money.I like Joe Louis,he was a great fighter and a great soldier and one thing about Joe Louis, that makes him a great person and an American,he said during WW2 in his military uniform, that we're gonna win cuz we're on God's side, and I believe that's one of the reasons they were heartless towards that great warrior of a man,the IRS,and the leadership!!!!
The problem was they could not allow leniency due to the fact they would have to give everybody that due then. With the amount of money Joe made he never should have had issues.
I was going to mention that, an absolutely shameful act by the scumbags at the IRS
A very high quality recording! And what a punishment from Louis! I was hurt here on my chair... But Simon's head was made of very hard stuff.
He HAD to have suffered brain damage (right?). I mean he just got beaten from pillar to post.
Joe Louis was pure class. Notice he didn’t waste punches when he threw them? Great boxing form. My pick for greatest heavyweight champ
He is definitely up there
It is hard to pick #1 but definitely in the running. Joe never lost his composure. A very articulate fighter. If his opponent made a mistake by leaving an opening, Joe was right there to send a fist in.
I never knew that Louis fought Abe Lincoln. I hope Louis doesn't hit him in his head wound
He had no foot work. Ali would have made him look foolish. Marciano knocked him out of the ring
He probably was the best boxer as far as Heavyweights go to that point. As far as Marciano beating him, yes, he was older, but different than Ali, he was Always punchable. Most fighters connected with where Ali used to be, in his prime. This is why I've always believed Marciano, who showed up for Every fight conditioned to throw 200punches a round for 20rounds, stood a good chance of defeating Louis at any point in his career. If you listen to Ali interviewed at various points, he saw the same thing I'm talking about. People talk about Ali beating a monster like Liston. Which he did through mentally frustrating him and running him out of gas. If you're dealing with a destruction machine you can't mentally frustrate, who's got a longer range gas tank than you do, it's a unique problem.
Louis' punching technique and form is beautiful. And so efficient.
I can't believe the punishment that was administered to Joe's fists.
TO his fists???? JFC!!!
Simon did some acting later. He was one of John Friendly's thugs in On The Waterfront. He had HUGE hands!
So was tony Galento
Yeah, I'd hate to have one of those fists against my head!
He was a HUGE man!
Tami Mauriello and Lee Oma were also in the film and both fought Louis
Of course he was.
Some one tell Dr Frankenstein that we found Igor
Abe Simon the Jewish giant, what a tough man to withstand that onslaught from one of the hardest punchers ever for as long as he did. Total respect for the challengers heart, and the power and accuracy of Louis punches.
Very Tough Man Abe 👊
Я таки знал: шо не Саймон ,а Шимон !!! Таки не удивлюсь шо у него были родственники в Одессе !!?
Man, I hate to think about that guy later in life. He absorbed way too much punishment.
Simon confessed that he never felt any pain. He was a freak.
Yeah simon surprisingly was fine. Itnshocked me too. But look at his build. Hes built like a transport truck. Hes the same height as francis ngannou but twice as wide
@@jonbathurst953 Simon was about 2 inches shorter than Francis. Much tougher though.
In an article for a magazine years later Simon said he suffered from chronic headaches his entire life. He blamed it on the horrific punches he took from Louis.
Hate to run in to Simon on the street in a bad mood, what a beast!
Why not Joe Louis on the street? Simon was just big and goofy.
@@FormerIFBBJudge"Abe Simon" was probably better at wrestling than he was at boxing.
The sound is off by about 22 seconds. You’ll notice Simon goes down @2:12 but the announcer doesn’t call it until 2:36. It’d be nice if that were properly synched.
Joe is so much faster than Simon. Quite a size and weight difference. But Simon was a tough SOB, being able to stand thru some hellish barrages.
Usually the bigger you are the slower you are. That's why when I hear this nonsense about the guys from the 70's not being "real" heavyweights I gotta laugh. I see these big muscle bound guys today plodding around firing head shots at each other with no defense and I don't think Ali, or Rocky or even floyd, would have any trouble with the alphabet soup crowd.
"Size" means nothing!
@@josephshields2922 Taller means nothing . But they forget Joe Louis beat a lot of giants.
@@FormerIFBBJudge my girlfriend keeps telling me that it does.
@@FormerIFBBJudgewell; Joe was 6’2” and you don’t see any 5’2” heavyweights so height must mean something…
What a treat! It's awesome to see a Louis fight in this high quality of film. It looks better than a lot of fight clips from this era and even some from later on. Ty. 👍
Look how clean cut it is, THE QUALITY! 🔥
Louis wasn't a dancer but his footwork in close was impeccable.
Its crazy how good they look once upscaled. Louis is masterful all those little movements and feints
He donates his purses to the USA then they do him for tax evasion 😮😮😮how nice
Thanx for the upload, never saw this fight before, never heared of Abe Simon. He has an unbelievable HULK Look...
Голиаф !!! Опять получил
Abe swallowed more punches than Jake la Motta did against Sugar Ray Robinson. How could someone have those physics to survive this??
"Abe Simon" had a big thick Chunky Head, and obviously also, Big thick jaw muscles. He beat the count but the ref couldn't stand seeing the brutality any longer, thus prompting him to wave it off.
Left his brain in his locker.
Abe revealed later on that he couldn't feel pain. That could explain how he was able to push through punches that should have left him writhing on the ground.
@@Pedro_Le_Chef" Captain Kirk, I am not programmed to feel pain!"
The guy had basically no defense except his face but he could take Lots of shit that's for sure!!!!
Joe Louis.....he is one of those people who have a superior and timeless character.
Accurate pin point striking by Joe! Quick and powerful as well! Wow! Nice footage.
The Brown Bomber is right! Look at those punches
Big Joe is still the best combination puncher among the heavyweights, ever.
His left hook was beautiful and he rarely wasted punches
Abe "heavy bag" Simon... The man had guts !!!
Joe Louis took no money in this million dollar fight. In later years the IRS demanded thousands of dollars from Louis for undeclared taxes. Shameful!
Joe Lewis was just class he could of fought in any era
You are seeing a preview here of what he would do to Mr Fury.
It's spelled "Joe Louis". 🥊
There was a KickBoxer/Karate Practitioner named "Joe Lewis". 🥋
Joe Louis Joe Lewis was a karate champion
@@josephshields2922Abe Simon isn’t fury pal FURY IS SMART FAST AND WOULD HAVE KOED THEM BOTH
@@scottmalcolm Fury was almost taken out by a 0-1 Novice. His best win is a 40 year old Klitscko and it wasnt even by knockout.
Louis would utterly destroy him and Simon would definitely go the distance. Fury does not hit hard enough to KO Abe.
Boy our government screwed Joe Louis so badly over taxes
Please synch the sound. Thanks for this classic video!
I think those millenials who are always yapping about the old heavyweights being too small to compete today, should check out this video. Abe was 255 lbs of solid muscle. There were plenty of big guys around in those days but agility and ability mean more than size. Some of the best Champs were small in stature like Marciano at 5' 11". I never saw Louis moving so fast. Is the video sped up or is this just a quick paced fight?
I don't know, but maybe Joe looks faster than normal because he was that much faster than Simon.
Marciano was really about 5'9 listed at 5'10. Height means nothing.
Just a better quality of film. The films back then only played at 18 frames per second compared to 60 fps today. This film is actually showing Joe's true speed. Imagine seeing him with today's technology! It would be almost unbelievable.
@@FormerIFBBJudgeit helps.
of course Joe Louis would DESTROY and dominate the entire division today
Abe had an incredible chin. Joe had astonishing precision.
Simon had a good strategy, doubling and trippling up on the jab and coming forward and throwing body shots when he got close. He just wasn't quick enough to be Louis' match. I don't know what he could've done differently that would've changed things.
You get it. There was nothing Simon could have done that would make him look good next to Louis.
Man this dude can take a BEATING! Looks like Joe is just toying with him, picking his punches and landing at will. Thanks for posting this beauty.....really good stuff. ❤
Never saw anyone against ioe take the heavy blows as much as abe did what a concrete jaw !
Joe Louis es uno de los tres mas grandes campeones de todos los tiempos no paraba de asestar golpes de poder precisos y certeros por eso lo apodaban acertadamente "El bombardero de Detroid".
Louis was the greatest HW of all time. If WW2 never happened it wouldn’t have ever been disputed
Abe Simon got wiped out. He could take a punch but not a couple dozen of them right on the chin.
Never knew simon was such a lump. Some interesting details from wiki about him: He was a star lineman on his high school football team and was an interscholastic shot-put champion before taking up boxing. Was trained by Freddie Brown, who went on to train Marciano and later Larry Holmes and Roberto Duran. While pursuing his boxing career in his 20s he worked as a police patrolman in Long Beach, and after this loss to Louis was appointed Deputy Police Commissioner (1942). From 1947 to 1956 he had a successful part-time career as a boxing referee. He began working as a detective at Roosevelt Raceway in 1957, and after suffering from arthritis, switched to Public Relations around 1966 before his death from a heart attack three years later, aged just 56. He also had acting experience, appearing in several films including On the Waterfront and Requiem for a Heavyweight.
Interesting facts
Look at how impossible it is to tie Louis up. He was a master at breaking a clinch
Joe Louis increíble, uno de los más grandes.💪✌️👍👍👍
Louis era certero, veloz de manos y noqueador habia que aguantarlo, un gran campeón.
They always get angry with the Ref for stopping a fight when the other guy was beating the hell out of them.
In those days if they weren't carried out it wasn't a true k.o.😬
Big Abe should have been a wrestler!
Definitely..!! He looked like a natural grappler.
They were rocks? Today 3 punches like that IS a mortal nock out.
Never heard of Simon but he must have taken 50 perfect shots
Abe was built like a statue but he moved like one too.
Simon kept his right down so low I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did .
Great accuracy and power from Louis
Simon had a chin of gramite! Louis was hitting him with clean hooks and crosses and Simon. Simon withstood tremendous punishment before going down.
Superb.
damn Abe was a giant of a man, he looks like hes part neandertal
Unbelievable he could take those punches and keep on coming
Abe claimed he could not feel pain.
Wow thanks this is the first time seeing this thanks
Simon's strategy seemed to be blocking Lewis' punches with his face.
I got Joe Louis' autograph at Northgate Mall in Seattle in 1956 when I was ten.
"Cover your face Ralph" 😂😂😂😂
Excellent upload thank you
That man was huge!!!
Sadly the audio commentary does not match the video
This is brilliant
The greatest heavyweight of all time. It was rare to even last the distance against him.
This guy was the original Bear Jew. Scary big but Louis wasn’t intimidated.
Gave away 50 lbs to Simon who also had a strong jaw and still won.
Joe Louis is Mohamed Ali with a punch.
5:33 Thats a big guy, Joe uses his left hand to hold him up to set up the punch. Yep, right there hold still. Goodnight!
Damn Simon was a big dude
Simon with the right training would be a beast. But Joe might have been the GOAT
What a chin Simon, had!
This was more or less an exhibition fight. I think the big guy was supposed to go down in the 3rd but somebody forgot to tell him or he forgot to listen. Joe was throwing haymakers from the opening bell! Simon was one tough dude!
Damn simon was big, his ribcage looks cartoonish
Big man had a great chin
Las respuestas de este hombre son siempre teóricas, abstractas y carentes de bases concretas.
"...the gallant Abe." Wow! Louis's combinations. So accurate!. The fight should've been stopped sooner.
Joe is the class in that ring.
I wonder what kind of wrestler Abe would of made his back and rib cage are freakishly broad 🤔
255lbs was massive for a heavyweight in that era.
That's how you know Joe Louis knock out power was the real deal holly field, smh pretty much they had Joe fighting up against the real incredible hulk 😂 and Joe still knocked that guy out 👊🏿😏💯💣💥🔥
It looked like Abe had no fighting experience. He never used his right hand.
I don't see how Joe ever lost a fight.
Got too old.
Джо луис е
то легенда бокса
Beatiful boxing. Shameful to have been treated like that.
Joe louis was precise and effecient throwing his punches againts helpless giant.
Wow I am watching this 2024 Easter morning 6:15 am
That Simon sure could take a punch. All neck and shoulders. His head hardly moved, even when he was hit cleanly.
Did Abe know that there's this thing called guarding, as well as bobbing and weaving? Idea is to hit and not BE hit, Abe.
Abe and two tonne Tony were in " on the water front"
The audio is so out of sync with the video it's pathetic.
Increible q manera de encajar la de abe impresionamte
what the big guy needed was a proper boxing trainer who could at the very least teach him the basics of boxing. Simon was obviously one of the exclusive "Bum of the Month" club
Abe Simon was a highly rated heavyweight. He was in the top 5. He knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott before Walcott was ever champion, so he wasn't old. He defeated other highly ranked fighters too. Joe Lewis was one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. There is no shame losing to him.
They were all bums compared to Joe.
@@altg5708I saw skills there, he was in shape, good technique for the time. Joe was just to much, to strong, to smart, to fast, even Abe's size did not help him over power JL. he could not push him around. He tried, also, Abe's body shots were big shots, Joe did not flinch, like Simon was hitting a tree. No effect. Pure class how Joe did not hit him when he was obviously going to fall. Fighters would hit opponents on 1 knee back then, My grandpa met Joe in Vegas when he was old, broke trying to make a buck, but it was his proudest moment. America shoulda been kinder to JOE LOUIS.
@@johnhoie1 Not Rocky. And a young Joe would have lost to the same age Rocky too. Why? Because everybody lost to Rocky. Deal with it!
@@altg5708 No one knows that. If you’re certain of it, you’re a fool.
Very good video quality, but the crowd noise sound sync is obviously off the mark.
Hey Wayne Charles was still a great fighter and only 2 years older when they fought that first fight and gave Marciano a great battle going the distance despite being brutally beaten for his efforts. Yeah a prime Frazier and Marciano would have been a war. Marciano had power in both hands would be to his advantage and better D. Prime Ali was incredible
Woah, look how HUGE he is...
Phew!! Masterclass giant toppling . Mike Tyson may be more effective?? Joe fantastico man abe gutsy
48 Pound weight difference
Abe Simon was a big fella!
Man, Joe is pretty much hitting him in the face at will.
Simon is a big, hulking guy. He seemed to be able to take a punch but his own punches weren't anything to brag about. Maybe that is due to his being too busy using his gloves in efforts to defend.
I don't know who's scarier; Lewis or Simon.
Abe made for a good and very big punching bag.
😊la forza bruta contro la tecnica di joe Louis.
Abe might’ve had half a chance if he used his right hand as well.
