    Macht, Solitär, and even Übel are all different dark reflections of how Frieren wants to learn magic and learn about humans. It's very neat how the author keeps contrasting the characters like this. It's also quite interesting because, despite being dark reflections of Frieren, they are all also well defined characters in their own right.

    It's super fun to see this. Macht operates in such impossible circumstances - where if he manages to feel what he wants to feel, he will die. Glück is also an interesting character. He wants to help Macht, but he knows that if he manages to do it it will mean the end of him, even if Macht wouldn't do anything bad to him or Weise, he would have to make choices that would be a political suicide. I wish we got more of Lektüre though.
    EDIT: Also Macht was known from turning whole villages and towns to Gold. Hence the "Golden Land" nickname. It's just that after Weise was turned into gold it became known as "The Golden Land".

    Ironic that Macht basically does what Frieren wishes she had done with Himmel. She regrets that she ignored Himmel until he died while Macht was with Gluck basically every day until he became old. He basically lived Frieren’s ideal life.

    I think it’s not wrong to find Macht sympathetic. I think he genuinely is. He does have genuine affection for Gluck and Denken. It’s just that that affection has zero effect on whether he wants to kill them or not. Kinda like how a farmer may raise an animal or have affection for it, but have no remorse for slaughtering it for meat.

    Weise story had me tearing my hair out ugly sobbing because what the fuck. WHAT THE FUCK.
    Oh my god the parallel of Macht with Frieren. The absolute understanding and acceptance of Gluck over Macht's nature as a demon (he would lie and betray and wouldn't understand human emotions ever) yet still genuinely enjoying the time they had together (much like how Himmel accepted Frieren's nature as an elf to be aloof and distant but he loved her nonetheless). How Macht's act of goldenized the city was in full awareness that there's a possibility he would _die_ along with it. Like sure he didn't because he didn't understand malice or guilt. But he was _prepared_ for that outcome, expected and welcomed it even. In Macht's "best case scenario", goldenized Weise would let him understand malice and guilt, which will trigger the bracelet to kill him, and he would die alongside Weise. Like that is INSANE to think about! That he intended his final action to be turning this city where he had spent 30 years serving into everlasting, undestructible gold and immortalize its people forever.
    Macht may not feel malice or guilt but he damn well felt _something_ for this place after all those time.

      @@k.t.4613 it's also interesting that the event that triggered his decision to do this is that he saw his mortal partner being close to death. He decided it was then or never, or perhaps decided that he wanted that moment to never end.
      One way to look at it is that Macht froze Wisse in time, while Frieren accepted time marches on.

    Denken is such a sweatheart. Denken's training under Macht resembles Fern's under Frieren. He also blasts a rock as proof of his prowess and the other detail is when he meditates birds landed on him like with Fern. I like how it resembles Fern.
    Glück truly isn't as straight as an arrow when it comes to morals, but he loves his family and fishing is a relaxing hobby to have. This dude is quite relatable if he weren't that cunning.

    Macht is a funny foil to Frieren. Both are long-lived beings who want to “get to know people better.” Both have a human who teaches them what it means to be human in Himmel and Gluck. Both have genius human apprentices that break rocks. Yet they differ in such key ways. Macht’s quest is essentially to understand the worst in humanity through learning about guilt and malice and bringing suffering. Frieren’s is to discover the beauty and kindness that permeates human existence.

      @@Алексей545-т6б Yeah, but in noble families you often have main branch (Glück) and some "side branches" (Denken). Given how Glück was treating Denken, it looks like they were in different branches. Which usually were closer than average families, despite being less blood-related.
      I do know some nobility and aristocracy and I reviewed their family trees. And they were surprisingly close with people who were related to them 5-6 generations back. Which would be outside of what we think as "incest". And honestly even 2 generations is very safe, assuming it isn't repeated many times throughout the generations.

    I know people disagree with me, but I would like you to consider for a moment the possibility that no, Frieren's story is not about "learning emotions from humans". If you ever rewatch/reread the show/manga, and try to determine the main themes of each chapter/episode, you'll find that they are not about "emotions", or about people discovering or learning to give value to their feelings. They are about loss, time, memories. Or about the relationship between master and disciple (like in this chapter), or the true nature of heroism or fear, etc.
    Strangely, people have decided watching the first episode of the show that it was a story about an emotionless person learning emotions through her interactions with humans - and never "tested" if this hypothesis was confirmed or not by the text itself.
    It is especially strange after Frieren demonstrated how well she understands people in previous chapters. Or with Macht understanding Lektüre's feeling better than her father - showing us that it is not that he doesn't understand affection (he told us he did a few chapters ago) or other feelings - just that there are some specific emotions that are not available to demons, as Solitär taught him.
    But, well, I am in the minority.
    Edit : and, yes, Macht waited for Glück to reach the end of its life before turning him, and the city, to gold. Almost as if he did not want to see his "friend" die, or the city disappear or change - as if he did not want time to to take them away. As he said, the time they spent together was "irreplaceable". Ans so he changed everything into indestructible statues... Like Himmel, who made statues of himself so that Frieren would take them with her in the future, a proof that it existed, a way to not let memories crumble away.

    • @Airwave2k2
      @Airwave2k2 День назад +7

      I mean it is a valid point, but then again the story explores several themes. And one of them is emotions. Just as you say making it all about it would be wrong, but it is there. Frierens emotions are complicated. I'm also in the camp that she doesn't need to learn emotions - rather she had the majority of her life tried to not get emotionally detached as to go under the radar not making any connections and letting this habit go, and how it formed her current self is the exploration the audience witness.

    • @lindsayroutliffe
      @lindsayroutliffe  День назад +2

      I see what you mean! Going through the manga for the first time it’s a lot of info so I’m probably not nailing all the themes and what not. I don’t think Frieren needs to learn about human emotions so I was off there but maybe a deeper understanding of herself and her own feelings which she can learn through the relationships she makes is probably more accurate, I love her the way she is though haha. She’s always had the emotions there and Macht understands how emotions appear, Macht is still a bit fuzzy character wise for me but I don’t have the full picture of him yet but he has an amazing understanding of people and how emotions manifest that’s seriously impressive and dupes me constantly into thinking he really also feels a lot of these things and forgetting he’s a demon 😂

    • @jannegrey593
      @jannegrey593 20 часов назад

      The beauty of Art is that it can be interpreted in many ways. There isn't single "objectively correct" way to interpret piece of art. For me Frieren is "learning" emotions - but this is only from very Human point of view, because she is learning how certain emotions (not all) are perceived from Human (or Dwarven) angle. So only a small part and from certain point of view. And yes, it is also about loss, time, memories and feeling regret about not doing something in the past. This is all there. As @Airwave2k2 says - it explores different themes at the same time.

    Reading the comments has helped me articulate something about how Frieren and Macht are contrast.
    Macht decides to turn the entire city to immutable gold when he observse his mortal partner growing old, freezing everything in that moment of time.
    Frieren accepts time marches on and makes the most of every moment and carries the treasured memories into the future.
