Atsuko Tanaka, who provided the voice for Flamm, had been battling illness for the past year, but her son and voice actor Hikaru Tanaka announced that she passed away on the 20th, Japan time. Atsuko, who has a unique voice, was active not only in anime, but also in dubbing many foreign films. On a personal note, the most memorable voice of hers is Motoko Kusanagi (Major) from Ghost in the Shell. Please rest in peace...

I think I've heard people pronounce Serie's name three or four different ways so it's not a problem. I think your analysis of her is pretty spot on. She really is a massive tsundere. The Revolte fight will look incredible animated (as long as the same people are producing Frieren). I think people are right, a Methode cosplay would suit you well.

As someone already commented, Serie is basically saying Genau to not die : kind people tend to die earlier than others... This is also the author trying to have us ponder if kindness is truly what we should expect from a hero. Sacrificing yourself to save others is great - but doesn't vanquish the cause of the problem. Just like with Wirbel, those with heroic intentions may have to forget about being "good" or "kind" : you may have to sacrifice others rather than yourself to protect what you want to. As a side note, this is one of the things discussed in Machiavelli' "The Prince" : kindness is a virtue, but too much virtue may be bad for a ruler. On the other hand, you have Himmel : a hero, but kind whenever he can be.
God i really enjoy your videos, i love how you catch the little details to understand the characters feelings and their actions, very few youtubers do that. This manga gives us such deep characters and i dont blame you to love weird men like Genau and Richter after all i fall for Ubel... what a mess of characters, freaking love them all

With regards to Genau and his emotions, I think sometimes when we like a character we tend to always perceive them in a "positive" light and I think you did that a little bit, I'm not saying Genau is bad because he isn't, but he's a very desensitized human being due to his environment and the kind of job he has to do, so when he's saying stuff like "I don't feel a thing about my hometown being destroyed" he's speaking the truth, rather than trying to mask his feelings. Serie is able to see through him and that's why she says: "You don't possess even a grain of kindness. Never change that". Serie knows that in the battlefield, being kind-hearted will lead to death, so she commands him to keep being this way. But at the end of the day he gets fooled into saving a child, proving that despite how desensitized he is, the man still has a heart... All these nuances is what makes him such a great character 👐🏻
I think I either said in this video or the next that I was probably painting Genau into being a positive person because I like him and I should chill on doing that, whether he truly meant he didn’t feel anything about his hometown being destroyed or he’s kind of lying to himself and masking his feelings I feel like both can be kind of true, he could’ve felt that way at some point but like you said he’s so desensitized at this point he doesn’t care, but there’s still some of that kindness or care deep down inside 🥲 I totally agree I love the nuances of his character, they did such a good job developing a character I previously didn’t care about in such a short time!
I think Serie’s intention here is to drill her apprentice into being a steely fighter in war against the demons. That’s why she said what she said. She might have been a little dishonest in the process, tough love and everything
IMO, Serie saw herself in Genau in that moment. I think he said what he thought he should say in that situation to honor his fallen partner, even if he only half meant it. So Serie called him out on it, but told him that he should take care to remain cold and detached in order to be an effective battle mage and avoid dying like his partner because by doing something like trying to save a villager instead of prioritizing killing the demons. As she said a bit earlier, kind-hearted mages die young and she's telling Genau to remain as he is and not turn into a kinder man.

Understandable when it had taken place at the time in the anime. Now he get redeemed. 1st class mages are the guardian for people that travel the north and their focus is on demon control. Since every carelessness gets a death penalty with demons it makes the 1st exam more justifiable.
13:20 I just noticed the color spreads in Viz are black and white? Nooo, you're missing out on the beautiful spreads of the manga. I like their translations but we gotta do something about this! Maybe having someone warn you when there's a color spread beforehand and they can sent you the colored version for the reaction?

Methode bribing Frieren with a useless(ish) grimoire in exchange for head pats and hugs is in my top five of favorite gags in the entire series 😂 BTW in the original text , Frieren says "My body is already yours" when Methode asks for a hug- that why Fern got even more angry. I think that Serie really cares about Genau- that is why she didn't pair him with Ubel, she knew that Genau needs a more caring and human person such as Methode- but can you imagine how much he had to steel himself in order to remain sane while standing amid the devastation of his hometown? Can't wait for you to read Fern and Methode's fight!
