May I point out that when Kate takes Dorset's hand to get into the boat, she's wearing gloves. During the ride, she takes them off to play with the water. So not only Anthony would have been witnessed Kate taking Dorset's hand for a second time, but it would have been without the gloves - hand to hand. Anthony would rather die i think.

Which is why he leapt to retie the mooring and help her out of the boat -- he couldn't give up that opportunity. Just that little thumb-finger stroke was enough sparks for her to startle back.

Love love love this analysis! Their first dance symbolizing Kate and Anthony dancing around their feelings. The lowering of their hands down their faces finally revealing their true feelings and we see that desperate look in Kate’s gorgeous face (can we talk about Kate’s look in this scene. That beautiful peachy orange and her hair and makeup had me fawning! my favorite look of the whole series-not just hers but out of EVERYBODY) Brilliant take! I kept thinking about that scene in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist when Thom grabs Nick’s hand and says “THIS” and then goes on his I Just Wanna Homd Your Hand monologue. Watching this season and everything they did with the hand stuff, I was finally like, Okay, Thom. I GET IT NOW.

Thank you for that scintillating way of hand stuff analysis on your part. Initially, I never understood the 3 fingers he showed her and then turned it to 4, was about the number of children, although after watching a number of times you confirmed my guesses. But the hand stuff analysis you did just goes to show how brilliantly Jonathan and Simone acted out their roles. Such talent and effort put by both to make this series a success. Kate as usual always had that tensed look and rarely smiled. Anthony was head over heels in love with her and trying hard not to show it. I guess it is easier for a woman to hide her feelings than it is for a man. Believe me, when i say , i have seen a lot of romantic western movies but this series beats them all. Those subtle nuances that you are allowed to make 200 years ago as this story was set in that era. Both Jonathan and Simone had to resort to facial expressions, looks, stares, blinks, body language that makes the audience like me wanting for more of this kind of series. Wish that today's men could be more of a gentleman like Anthony often refers himself to , thereby validating his insecurities leaving Kate amused. I love KAnthony. Brilliant acting by both of them, the rest of crew, cast, choreographer, producer and director for making this storybook into real life series. Thank you. As for Simone and Jonathan, they were perfectly cast for each other. No one else could have portrayed it in the excellent way they both did. In south Indian weddings, the groom goes round the bridal altar 7 times with his bride holding her by her pinky finger symbolising a lasting relationship that is meant to be till death do us part and the submission of the bride to always follow her husband's leading as the head of the household. As a Tamil myself, i refused to follow this custom as it meant servitude and my husband did not mind. Please keep your analysis going. You described the series very well.

As that applies to Bridgerton, sectioning off specific talking points to work through bit by bit in different videos is more manageable. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. ☺️✍🏻

One of the most important “hand stuff” scenes is when his mother holds his hand while they’re both crying during her long overdue apology to him. There has been a strong undercurrent of hurt and coldness in their relationship since season one and this brilliantly shows that mother and son are finally on the mend. Daddy Bee - see she is not allergic, she will not die, you will not lose her you idiot - marry her. Mommy Bangle makes a scene, stops the wedding , fixes the horrible mistake that was going to happen.

I think both Jonathan and Simone give their hundred per cent to creating this epic chemistry. Hands stuff aside which is the base of their romantic journey but the way they used other senses like the way they see each other intensely, the way they speak passionately, how they both hear and understand each other and not forget how Kate's scent hypnotises Anthony. Never have I experienced senses playing an important part in any romantic portrayal in movies or series and that's why Season two raised the bar higher for any romantic story or romantic couples out there. While it’s just incredibly sexy in of itself, there is something to be said about Anthony’s demand for intimacy there. He just lets it all go. “Enough with the niceties. I need you right here.” Lol

Hi! Indian American here to say that I love all your breakdowns of this one series so very much! I actually did not know about the pinky leading in Indian Weddings in the south because in the region my family is from (West Bengal) they tie the groom’s Dupartta (scarf) to the bride’s Anchal (part of sari that hangs over the shoulder. They then switch leading each other around the sacred fire in the center. Though I’ve also seen taking a step forward together be done as well.
I wanted to address the last hand stuff you mentioned that takes place in the last dance. You mentioned the bringing down of their last walls which poetically I love! However I wonder if this is also a nod to Indian wedding customs. When the bride is brought to the Groom she is hidden from view. Different parts of India also approach this differently. In West Bengal the bride holds a Paan leaf in front of her face as she circles or is carried around the groom in a circle before landing before him. Only then does she lower the leaf and they see each other’s face for the first time.
I’ve also seen it done where members of her family will hold up a fabric piece that is semi visible through to see outlines but only when lowered do you see each other fully and clearly for the first time. In movies this is a beautiful scene as you see here with Kate and Anthony because it’s the first look of who you are about to spend the rest of your life and the next 7 lifetimes with. ☺️

Thank you for sharing your cultural perspective! It’s an interesting idea you have about that part of the dance choreography. • @birdiewolf3497

Hi again!! Yes another Kanthony video!!! My beautiful feral dummies. My unhinged faves.
I definitely understand why you choose to focus of hand stuff. I mean if you were to do just their non-verbal interactions it would have easily been 2 hours long. Like you I am going to try to contain it to just the hand stuff and just focus on expanding on an points you mentioned in the video. If left to my own devices, I would have written a whole thesis. Also minor complaint how dare you not mention your favorite hand stuff moment? Where were your rankings? I wanted to know which hand stuff almost fried your computer.
Anyway back to Kanthony hand stuff. I guess I should start off with the pre Kanthony hand stuff specifically the Danbury Ball in episode 1. Because Kate was so hostile towards Anthony not just because she overheard him make an ass of himself, but because she allowed herself to like him and indulge in it. Because Kate had a staring problem, and she followed him outside where he proceeded to put his foot in his mouth. It wasn't until the Pall Mall scene where she had to put her ego/fake contempt aside and ask for his assistance in getting out of the mud. Like you said it lead to a cute moment of them laughing together, and breaking down Kate's walls around Anthony. We see this again with the Bee scene. Kate picks a fight with Anthony, but he can't engage with it because he is having a panic attack which leads Kate to comfort him. Both their guards were completely down in this moment, and basically allowed their connection to fully be formed and expressed.
In reference to the hunting scene, library scene, and their first dance, I just wanted to say that Kate was mainly the one trying to runaway from their connection, Anthony on the other hand was more willingly to explore it (before his conversation with Daphne). Hear me out, I know that sounds weird given where the episode ended, BUT think about it. It was Anthony who was like, "we need to talk about the Bee sting incident". Kate was trying to play it cool and at like it was no big deal. And then at the library Kate was the one that got snapped out of it first and ran away, meanwhile Anthony was trying to get her to stay. And then during their first dance, he was fishing. He wanted to know her feelings, he was looking for an excuse (man is always looking for an excuse). That is why he is frustrated and wondering why she doesn't like him. After Anthony didn't propose to Edwina at the dinner (because of Kate), his actual interest in proposing to Edwina was dead in the water. It wasn't until Daphne unknowingly triggered him when she correctly pointed out he was falling in love with Kate, that he renewed his desire to propose to Edwina in a brilliant act of self destruction.😆😆
Sidenote: I love well written/acted self destructive mess like this. Because it was the way that I immediately knew after Daphne said the word love that he would propose to Edwina.
Anyway, did the proposal help Anthony with his feelings for Kate, NOPE. Instead he was pretending that they are "fortunate" that they were only caught by Daphne, and not forced to marry (in another fishing expedition by Anthony), only for him to be beguiled by the sight of Kate wearing the engagement ring 5 seconds later. And then he turned into a jealous buffoon at the lake. Like sir, you are the reason Kate even knows Mr. Dorset. And even though he is engaged to Edwina, he shoved Mr. Dorset out of the way just to hold her hand, and refused to let go until she snatched it out of his hand. I mean what a nut. Then our next hand stuff moment is the wedding. This is where Kanthony's unhinged behavior peaked in my opinion. I mean that man JUMPED and RAN from his place at the alter to pick up Kate's bracelet, so he can give it back to her with TWO hands. How was Edwina the only one who figured it out after that moment? It was sick. And he was diseased when 3 seconds after trying to convince Edwina to go through with the wedding and saying that Kate didn't matter, he was chasing Kate down, and holding her hand in the closet begging her to stay with him. He is so unserious. Speaking of how unserious Anthony was, THAT scene is episode 7, right before things get hot and heavy, he is telling Kate that she was the one that must stop 🥴🥴. This is barely a criticism, but the writers should have let Kate really call him out on his behavior. I mean it wasn't even 5 seconds ago that he was smelling her like an animal, and yet he thinks that she was the problem????
Then their relationship is finally being consummated where we get what is still my favorite of the hand stuff. Shout out to every single person involved with that particular shot, and I really do mean everyone.
This season really highlights how underrated hand stuff is in romance. Like it is such a great tool, and I hope this inspires people to put more hand stuff in their works. We need it!!

ok, I'm halfway through, LOVE this video so far and wanted to share my thought on the library scene. To me, the way he caresses the book, how tactile he's being with it, is indicative of how tactile he wants to be with her. It could also be reflecting fondness of his dad but he wouldn't be free to express it in that way in a more formal setting.

Fantastic topic and video!! I would add my favorite hand stuff scene which is one of Kate’s flashbacks to their um….intimate moments. there’s a quick shot of Anthony on his knees looking up at her and she is holding his jaw open with her thumb. It shows his submissiveness and willingness to let her lead and shows that she can take the reins but in a gentle and exploratory way. I had to fan myself…. 🤤

Also in the book Anthony gives flowers to Kate's Mother Mary saying that Simon did it while courting Daphne and it made Violet so happy so he's copying that move, also for season 2 I would like to see Kate's story line centering on her finding her role in the Bridgerton family or maybe her being confronted with how little she knows of her birth mother while she is staring motherhood in the face by trying or being already being pregnant during the season maybe they can give her Anthony's plot line from the books that she fears dying young and leaving him and a child because he already overcame a similar fear he can help her though or whatever the writers decide I need them in season 3

Great video! Like you mentioned, hand touching was considerably more intimate during this time period since men and women couldn’t just touch casually. I think this is why that hand scene from the 2005 Pride & Prejudice is so beloved. But Season 2 of Bridgerton brought hand touching to a whole new level! Anthony and Kate make it look as intimate as anything. Even during their first love scene, there’s hand holding and it was beautiful! I think my favourite though has to be the scene of him helping her out of the boat. I love how her reaches out for her again before he falls in the lake 🥰

One small detail - I think in Ep. 1 or 2 it is mentioned (I think by Kate) that she has been taking care of Edwina for 8 years ever since their father died (so she was basically the same age as Anthony when they lost their fathers) - but yeah I agree more backstory to Kate would have been nice (as she has even more backstory/drama given that she in fact an orphan), and more scenes of Kate and Anthony together would have been nice as well.
One question (I am not at the end of the video so maybe you have already answered it) - when do you think that they realized that they love each other?

  • @OOH23

I love this breakdown of their interactions. It reminds me of an interview where Simone talks about how she and Jonny deliberately had their characters communicate through their hands as a private detail between them, not expecting fans to catch on. One of my fav moments is when Edwina and Anthony are talking to the queen about the upcoming wedding. Anthony looks calm until you look down and see he him about to start a fire with how much he's wringing his hands! It pans over to Kate who is also fidgeting with her hands as well.

Love your insights… one more item to point out about the mud scene, during the pall mall match, is that Kate asked for help, by outstretching her had to Anthony, after she got stuck. Yet after falling into the mud and laughing, it was Kate who first got up, shook off the mud, then extended her hand to help Anthony up. As they discussed their respective roles in the households, Kate re-iterated that her role as guardian of her younger sister was comparable to Anthony’s head of the Bridgerton family. Yet again blowing Antony’s 🤯 and 💜

I think the first time Anthony touches Kate is when he comes to visit Edwina for the first time at Lady Danbury’s. Once he climbs up the stairs & appears from behind the long queue of the men he then touches Kate’s arm to lead her away from the men & down the hall. Another moment he touches her that I haven’t seen commented on anywhere is when he is showing her how to hold her gun after the bee sting incident. Once he places the end of the gun inside her upper arm there is a definite brush of her left breast before he goes in to hold her hands over the gun :-)

@@LadyJenevia Joe Wright style Hand Stuff does abound. I love that you drew attention to Simone’s fingers in Jonathan’s hair (and vice versa). I have no idea how deliberate that was but it’s those fine details and (literal) gestures that elevate the performance of this relationship for me. Romantic dramas and rom-coms overall suffer from being too broad and generic; writers, directors, even actors phone it in and fail to apply the same level of craft and specificity they would in a different genre. This season of television was the complete opposite of that, despite tropes and melodrama. They poured care and dedication into every aspect of this love story. I’m really enjoying watching YT creators bring analysis into play for a show like this. It deserves to be unpacked and examined detail by detail, moment by moment, scene by scene. Thanks for what you do. It’s a fun watch.

Not hand stuff, but after their race, Anthony points out that Kate is riding astride, which was considered immodest for women because they’d have to hike up their skirts to do so (which can also be seen in this sequence). Kate also hikes up her skirts later during the hunt to step over a log and we see Anthony notice her thigh or maybe her stockings?
