Love your analyses. But regarding Edwina, don't you find her motivations & inner logic muddied & unclear from a writing standpoint? The writers, imo, did her character such a disservice in the growing inconsistencies of her requirements for a husband. No on-screen demonstration of why the switch from being content with Anthony's laid-out intentions, to her later insistence of love. And my need to search for intelligent youtubers like you, who give an insight into the possible psychology behind her change of heart from ep.1 to ep.6, shows all the more how remiss the writing for Miss Edwina truly is. The actress Charithra did an excellent job though, with what she was given. Love her!

Because he and Edwina were both doing that typical 'dating behaviour' of always trying to put your best self forward but Edmund told Anthony when he was a boy, "You cannot show someone your best without allowing them to see your worst."
They both didn't know the depths of each other's character. That's why Anthony told Kate he was surprised that Edwina was harsher than he knew her to be capable of after she gave him her talking-to when they first spoke after she ran away from the altar.

Also Indians just a hundred years prior to this period were far more wealthy and refined and educated than the Brits at that time .. of course those positions were shifted. British culture ie language architecture maths etc are heavily influenced by India .. the British soldiers for example were not allowed to mingle with the higher castes .. but only allowed to mingle with the indigenous women in India.

Totally agree with you about Mary. Loved how they paralleled a secondary theme of how young adults take on a parental, protective role for their emotionally vulnerable parents in a crisis (Anthony for Violet and Kate for Mary) which, though not ideal, is realistic as it happens a lot irl. Maybe future seasons will have more episodes to explore secondary themes more. (Honestly the main romantic plots aren’t as interesting to me as these subplots, but the series frame will probably always be romance so I’ll just enjoy the production value and fantasy aspect in the meantime.)

I know a lot of book readers didn’t like the way Edwina was portrayed in the show, but I vastly prefer show Edwina to book Edwina. After finishing the book I forgot her name almost immediately. She just wasn’t interesting. Every time I thought of her character it was just “Kate’s sister” in my mind. Edwina in the show actually felt like a real person and had a character arc. She changed and grew the most out of all the supporting characters in season 2.
Edwina being upset with Anthony and Kate for a while after the failed wedding felt very human to me. I think the show allowing Edwina to express negative emotions (anger, resentment, disappointment, ect) made the times when she chose kindness and forgiveness more impactful. Part of why that scene with the king worked so well imo is because we get to see that no matter how angry or disappointed she is Edwina doesn’t hesitate to help a vulnerable person. Edwina giving her blessing to the Anthony/Kate romance after really struggling with it initially felt so much more satisfying than if she had been ok with Anthony/Kate right away.

    • @LadyJenevia
      @LadyJenevia  2 года назад +64

Agreed! Reading the book after watching the season for the first time was a let-down (for many reasons, like how physically aggressive book-Anthony was) but when it came to Edwina, she was just nothing to me in the book. She didn't feel like an actual character. No growth, no evolution, no exploration of the depths of who she was, just a whole lot of nothing.
If some people love the book, that's fine, but it wasn't for me and I will continue to hype up show-Edwina and how fantastic Charithra was at playing her. Edwina-antis can leave their negativity towards her somewhere else! 😆🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes!! I don't understand when they say that Edwina was ruined. Girl barely had a personality in the book! For what I can recall on my various readings of the book, all we know about her is that she is pretty and is kinda intelectual, and wants a intelectual husband, but that's it.

    • @LadyJenevia
      @LadyJenevia  2 года назад +33

@@isadoraromero7558 If she had been written like that in the show, loads of critics and viewers would've dragged her for being not interesting or deep enough compared to Kate. Not everyone has read the book(s). It doesn't mean the source material doesn't matter, but the show has to translate well to viewers regardless of if they know what's in the books or else the show won't succeed.
I read the book after watching season 2 in order to be more thorough in my research since the season was so great that I decided I wanted to do multiple videos about the show but I'm ONE viewer. Not everyone will take the extra step of reading the book after watching the show. 😆

I had never thought about looking at Edwina’s awareness in terms of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, but that makes sense. I did see on Social Media where a woman from an Indian background suggested that it was Anthony handing the bangle to Kate that really sealed it for Edwina, apparently the bangles Kate was wearing are traditionally given by a man to his fiancée/wife, and it was suggested that Anthony picking up the bangle and the way he handed it back to Kate could be seen by Edwina as the equivalent of a betrothal or wedding ceremony. Basically that what Edwina witnessed was Anthony symbolically making a commitment to Kate, even though Anthony did not know the significance of his actions. I think there is a mix of all.

For me, Daphne was the biggest Kanthony shipper ever and the triumph smile she gives, in the end, shows how much she wants her brother's happiness. Loved the support Violet and Lady Danbury gave to Anthony and Kate respectively and their not fixing things in the wedding shows that for the first time they both know that this wedding is not a love match. They knew that in the long run all three of them ( Anthony, Kate and Edwina ) will find love and happiness so they let them go through this disastrous moment. As for Edwina even when the trailer and spoiler came out I knew in my heart that what she felt for Anthony is just a crush but since in those times there was no concept of crushes it can easily be named as love. Especially for young girls of that time and Edwina was no different as she idolises handsome Viscount and proclaims she loves him. Also if you notice she kept saying she wants to be his Viscountess more time than she wants to be his wife that also proves she sees him as the most suitable prospect out of all.

A lot of people give Edwina crap for not noticing but I have no trouble believing it. As you explained via the hierarchy of needs, what you notice is about how much mental space you are using. Edwina isn't leisurely watching Kate and Anthony from her couch while the camera zooms in on them...she is in survival mode. Edwina sailed to England for the sole purpose of being hitched so she is laser-focused. I think it makes total sense that the first time she notices is during the wedding ceremony, because that is basically the first moment she isn't preoccupied with preparing to get married...since she is already in the process of doing so.
Anyway, fantastic video! Thank you for making it.

But what I love is how their values are the same. It is one thing to have different hobbies or personality traits. It is another when your values and beliefs don’t match.
Many fights stem from different religious beliefs, your values about money, etc. these differences can make or break a relationship. M

Yes, Benedict doesn’t find out before the wedding debacle, but I believe he may piece it together immediately after while I don’t think the other siblings have. In the drawing room, Benedict suggest that he and Anthony go off to talk to each other alone, probably about this Kate situation (he is trying to be a good brother). During the family’s promenade when they are trying to do damage control, I believe there is a reaction from Benedict seeing Anthony look at Kate and Kate look at Anthony in the background (so much Benedict stuff is in the background). The next time Benedict interacts with Anthony it’s at the party he has while at art school and he tells Anthony that he has noticed how he looks at her along with their mom. So I would say somewhere between episode 6 and 7, Benedict knows. But there isn’t any evidence that the entire family knows (Colin or Eloise are preoccupied with there own stuff in the back half of the season). It is also interesting that Benedict is the one who sees Anthony bring Kate in after her horse accident.
It would be interesting to see when Benedict pieced it together cause we know that Anthony wasn’t forthcoming with the information and gets very defensive when Benedict brings it up at the party.
All this to say that Benedict is also my favorite Bridgerton sibling. 😂

@@LadyJenevia I know not at the wedding. Its in episode 7, at the beginning, the Bridgerton clan is sitting in the drawing room of their home. Violet suggests that they go on a promenade to keep up appearance. Everyone rolls their eyes/groans. And then Benedict says to Anthony, "Is there something more we should know...or perhaps more than I should know?" Anthony doesn't say anything to him.
So that suggests to me that he knows something. That is why I think at some point between the end of episode 6 and the beginning of episode 7, Benedict finds out. And then he looks like he knows what is happening during the promenade when Kate and Anthony look at each other. And despite Anthony never telling him, Benedict definitely knows by the art school party scene.

The only issue I have with this season Kate's writing. I wished they included more of her background, to flesh out her character even more. I don't know if anyone noticed, but after episode 3, she becomes more and more resigned, depressed even. Her expression right after Daphne found them in the library was one of horror and guilt. She was under tremendous pressure made worse by edwina's confession of love for Anthony that she just kept on repressing her own feelings to the point that she became a little stiff, which i totally understand, seeing how she took on her responsibilities. I love how she seeked her sister's forgiveness more than what she felt for Anthony and this continued right till the end. Regarding Edwina, i think after the wedding debacle, we actually get to see who this woman really is. This was a lot of fun! I think Edwina figured it out partially just because she had the mental space and partially because she caught a crush herself I think. She was really taken when he dragged the Sheffields and demanded they immediately marry. Technically that display of drama and passion was as much a defense of Kate as Edwina, but I'm not surprised her sweet heart was moved. I can buy that glimpse of what a man in love might do was enough to get her little brain thinking they might have a love match, and seeing him giving the 100 yards state during their vows and then Literally falling into Kate's eyes was a wakeup call.

People forget that Edwina's first love is her family. Those women love each other to pieces, and Anthony stuck up for all of them. He defended Mary when both Kate and Edwina are intimately aware of how hard it has been for her to come back to a place where people are viciously judgemental about Mary running off and marrying a "common worker" (which is extremely looked down upon because the tons' culture is disgustingly classist). Anthony had ALL OF US swooning when he defended the Sharma women. We can't blame Edwina for getting swept up in ✨The Drama✨ of it all. She figured it out eventually. 😂

He was feeling the pressure Kate was carrying exchanging looks with her that to me meant like his heart was squising for her helplessness. Through the talk he figued how Kate has tried to fed her family with a golden spoon and keep them unaware of her compromise with Shields to keep them in fantasy land. It's in romanclandia. But in reality Marry and Edwina both would be blamed for having a kinda princessy syndrome...i am pretty sure i would be thinking "where is the support for Kate then" if i was Anthony.

We are back with another Bridgerton video!!
Maybe the show could/should have done better by emphasizing the economics of Bridgerton. They definitely could have put in scenes with Kate and the Sharmas struggling to manage things after their father died. Because even though I picked up on how bad things were for the Sharmas, clearly not everyone got it. The father was a clerk for an Indian Royal family, that means you are probably living on their residence. There really isn't a 9 to 5 position at the palace. They want/expect 24/7 access to you and you can't really do that if you live outside the palace. So that means when he died, they are might have been homeless because the housing is a benefit of the job and they are also deprived of the only income earner(I think? They say that Lady Mary basically ran away. So it doesn't seem like she was able to get her dowry). It is going to be hard for three women to survive in those conditions. That is why Kate wrote to the Sheffields because they had little money. The Sheffield's said Edwina must marry an Englishman of nobility and Kate had to groom her sister so that she could secure a match that had a title so that she can save the family from poverty. Add the fact they had no dowries and a lot of households need that second income. That is another reason why they needed to find a match that was rich enough so that a dowry does not matter, because the plan was also for Kate and the mother to live off that dowry.
You know what now that I am explaining this, it wouldn't hurt for Bridgerton to have some kind of special episode or youtube video that details the economic realities of Regency era England. Because confusions about the economic realities of the characters do play into why folks be upset with the characters' choices. Kate really had do be all in with Edwina and Anthony once he proposed because breaking them up at that point would have caused a huge scandal and the chances of finding a rich husband would go out the door. I mean if you literally spent all of your money for this chance to save your family from poverty, it wouldn't be trivial to blow everything up. Now would you risk throwing your family into poverty for love? Would I do it? No. And Kate has the added weight of her feeling insecure about her place in the family. And is plagued with this need to pay back their "kindness" of still loving and accepting her even though her father has died.
And then we get into Anthony, who at the end of the day is the biggest bozo 🤡. It's basically his fault. He proposed to Edwina because Daphne triggered his dummy self when she was all like "You love Kate 🥰." And he really thought proposing to HER SISTER would somehow get rid of those feelings. The clownery. I, of course, loved this because I am a messy bitch who lives for drama. Anyway, for Anthony the stakes are way lower. He didn't want to fuck up his family's name and mess up the his siblings chances on the marriage market mostly, I am sure there is also some sort of economic advantage of being respectable in their society as well. But then down the line he also understood he couldn't turn back because he understood how bad it would be for the Sharmas (ie. Kate) if he did break the engagement.
If yall are still here with me, and are wondering why they couldn't forget about the scandal issues and just get married to each other instead of pushing through with this wedding which would have secured things for the Sharmas. That is a good question, and the answer is that our leads are dummies. They are so obsessed with being martyrs, that they couldn't see/understand best thing they could have done was to do something for themselves. That is the reason why they had to fail spectacularly. There was no scandal that would force them together, they would literally have to choose to be together. What tools did they have to choose each other before the wedding? Because please point to a moment in the show before episode 8 where either character would realistically be like "we should get married." This is the part where booklovers might come in and say they should have just stuck with the forced marriage plot, and we just gonna have to agree to disagree. Without going off on a whole book tangent, TO ME the forced marriage plot was extremely lazy. I mean it killed all the tension. Killed any real need for character development. The forced marriage in this context is basically a deux ex machina (idk if it is the most accurate term but whatever) because you basically setup two characters that want to be together, but can't be together because of their collective issues. Instead of having our characters' journey be about resolving these issues so that they can come together on their own, scandal/forced marriage gives them exactly what they want without the hassle of having to earn it in any capacity. They did not have to overcome the barriers that prevented them from making that choice themselves. Show Kanthony had to earn the shit. They had to become people that would choose each other.
Sidenote: The Edwina haters need to sit they asses down. Will cuss y'all hoes out when the Edwina video drops. Edwina really proved herself to be the diamond. I became an Edwina stan after episode 6. There is just this one thing I have to give just a sprinkle of tough love/critique. But it is literally just a sprinkle. Y'all really have no reason to be out here hating on my girl like this. Very ugly.

"I, of course, loved this because I am a messy bitch who lives for drama." I CACKLED 🤣
I agree with all of this, though. I don't mind people liking the book because it's all fiction and it doesn't make a difference to me and my life but I personally got very little out of reading it after watching the season. I completely relate to your point about how the forced marriage plot of the book destroys the dramatic tension. It is far more satisfying at the end of season two when they finally get together because they CHOSE to follow their hearts and let themselves be happy instead of staying crushed under the weight of their responsibilities. I haven't read any of the books besides Book 2 (I'm currently reading Book 1 but don't want to read any others until I can see the seasons first because I want to go into a first watch as unspoiled as possible) but it would also feel extremely boring to see another forced marriage when we already saw one last season. I want each season to feel unique to the two lead characters with their own love languages.
AND 100% YES to defending Edwina! I'm going to have to start putting verbal disclaimers in to ward off Edwina-antis because those takes aren't welcome here! I'm not debating it, and I won't have any Indian/South-Asian girls being made to feel unwelcome because certain people want to turn Edwina into this season's punching bag. 👋🏻

As someone who has read P&P and plenty of historical romances, I understand how the "Marriage Mart" works as described in these books. You read a novel about the Regency era and descriptions about the *ton* and how the social season worked are aplenty. For me to enjoy S2, based on my favorite book in the series, I had go forget the book and treat S2 as fanfiction (in fact, I do the same for every book adaptation I have seen on the screen). Anyway, I wish we could have seen a bit more of the real reason why Anthony was pursuing a loveless match because in his mind he didn't want his spouse to suffer the way he saw his mother suffered after losing Edmund because he's convinced he's going to die at the same age his father did. Another thing I missed from S2 is the budding friendship between Penelope and Kate, because they connected as wallflowers in the books. Too much was centered into Eloise/Pen and the Featheringtons dilemma with Jack (who is not in the book). But, I did love how Daphne (and later Violet and Lady D) were able to see "the smolder" (that's my way of describing Anthony's and Kate's eye f*cking each other).
For S3 and S4 I hope to see more Kathony, and having read that Shondaland is not going to follow the order of the books, well, I definitely will treat the series as fanfiction.

She would have to manage the whole household and sort of mother all of the siblings in addition to raising her own family. I feel like Kate can handle it but it seems looks a lot for Edwina. @@LadyJenevia Okay, this is going to be a bit of a rant that I just have to get off my chest somewhere. LOL This past weekend I decided to skim through season 2 and count up the minutes. The whole season is almost 8 hours if you don't count the credits. The next thing that I counted was the amount of minutes that showed the "MAIN CHARACTERS" Anthony and Kate together. Whether they were in a group setting or alone together. I found that they had just shy of 2 hours which is "CRAZY" to me since this season is about their Love Story and they only get around 24% of screen time. That is just bonkers. The Featherington's time was around 84 mins which took up around 17% of the screen time. Again, that is crazy to me as well. Hell they wasted 7 mins alone in episode 4 with Colin and Marina scenes when we could have had Sharma family flashbacks instead. I got so fed up I didn't even count the amount of time wasted on the Lady Whistledown search SAGA. All that being said I thought Jonathan and Simone did a fabulous job with the little amount of time they were given. They were what drew me in to watch Bridgerton in the first place and they are why I keep watching it over and over. I have no life. LOL

I've loved all your Bridgerton video....But this one was beyond excellent. You've described everything so precisely. It's amazing how you've acknowledged the importance of Daphne, Violet and Lady Danbury's Kate and Anthony's story. 😊
I love how you'd used Daphne's monologue of true love to show all the scenes of Anthony and Kate and how so truly it was them who were falling in love with each other🥰. I also loved how you described all the other siblings and there feelings regarding there same 🤣. And for the record I think Benedict did guessed what was going on bcoz in one of the scenes in episode 7 (after that hilarious scene of Edwina when she realized that she truly was blind not to see what was going on between Kate & Anthony) when Anthony goes to visit him in that painting class party Benedict did say that their mother is not the only one who sees the way he looks at Kate so I think he kind of knew. And in Colin's defence he's like that (charming bt slow 🤦), he didn't understand he's feeling for Penelope and vice versa until his book when he got to spend a lot of time with pen and realize his feelings.
As for more bridgerton videos plz make an video especially on Kate and Anthony and there relationship throughout the season it'll be most interesting. (Also on Kate roasting Anthony 🤣).
And yes plz make a video on how great Benedict is as it's evident that we all love him.

I also loved that edwina moment also! I think when she knew what she wanted for herself and she was able to see that Anthony was not giving it to her but giving it to Kate. I think that’s when she saw. It seemed like she just watched him generally pick up the bracelet and look at her sister with that intense stare. Like you said, it’s a coming of age and she choosing herself. In many ways she was more mature than Kate m. She even asked why couldn’t Kate have this for herself. I also think the queen also helped in making Edwina making a choice. Because without real love a marriage that is for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health is really hard to sustain. And definitely yes to romance themes. I love your channel I’m so glad I subscribed! I am a Romance junkie! The Genre is really about women’s fantasies unfortunately shaped by patriarchy.Sometimes I love the romance but find somebody everything is problematic about the male construct in which these women crave these men. It’s almost as if they create men that are slightly problematic and then fix them through love. Remember that while vampire and alpha wolf moments in the genre? Sometimes it was just too much!

I agree. I've felt from the first watch through that in some ways the writers relied too much on subtext. We needed to see flashbacks for Kate too. I think that's why a lot of people didn't get Edwina's awakening in Ep 6.
I also think that Colin had a suspicion (as did Benedict). If you see his facial expressions during the game you begin to suspect what they are up to.

The thing is, film is a *visual* medium. The average/casual viewer is going to better remember and understand Anthony's trauma because they can SEE it play out on screen. They can see his father die. They can see his mother crying her eyes out. They can see FaceTune-de-aged Anthony struggling to cope with being thrust into the role of family patriarch.
Not everyone is going to rewatch the season multiple times taking copious notes to write RUclips videos about. Kate needed to have flashbacks too! Her struggles are just as important to see as Anthony's!

I watched this season and read the book also. I think Colin is / was blind towards Penelope in the book but there were instances in the book series wherein Colin was atuned to situations developing around him. I believe this season is developing that part of his character. I believe that Colin could see what Daphne could see that’s why he did what he did during the pall mall scene. Another reason I think this is so, is How he discovered what Lord Featherington was doing - swindling the ton. Unfortunately, he is Still like most men in that era; thinking that women cannot do certain things - ( Portia and Penelope).

Anthony said it! Kate Sharma hit Viscount Bridgerton like a wrecking ball upon their first meeting. Think about that smile that was on his face at the end of their first meeting and then his delighted smile when he ran into Kate again at the Conservatory Ball. It was only after Kate gave him the "Cut Direct" to quote Violet Bridgerton that he went back behind his Viscount Bridgerton walls. But every meeting after that was another stronger hit to those walls of his. Why did Kate aggravate him so much? To me there were a couple of reasons. First because Kate is just as strong willed and exasperating as Anthony can be. Second is that the initial reaction Anthony had for Kate wasn't going away, as matter of fact is was getting stronger with every meeting. So to me yes Anthony knew from the first meeting, but we all know he had a lot of things he needed to deal with first before he was ready to fully fight for the family he wanted and say the words that Kate obviously needed to hear out loud.

And then I didn't think of Kate flashbacks at all and how it could fit into the show by reducing screentime of other side stories. I personally have a love hate relationship with Edwina because there are moments which I feel bad for her because she is completely clueless of what is going on and wants them to get along so much not knowing they actually are in fact falling for each other, but also her pure innocence is blind by this. But as someone who has read the books Edwina wanted just as much love for herself as for Kate before she Ben knew they liked each other but that only happens at the end of the series but I feel as if her character development was not smoothly transitioned in the sense that one moment she wanted people to love her but the then another moment she was being independent and having a mind of her own as they say but for me it was the fact that she allowed this to create hostility between them as sisters .
Like the moment Kate was like “we are sisters” and she was like “half”😒😒 Giiiirl Wow!! was not expecting that.Even though, she had every right to feel betrayed by Kate but I feel like she got to a certain point where she was being a little petty in the sense that most of she blamed as Kate’s fault which was true but to a small extent she was at fault because she told herself she was “ in love” with Anthony when on the contrary she was actually in love with the idea of being viscountess and being married to him. When reality hits that this fantasy she has built in her head is in fact just a fantasy and not a reality hits her and I think causes her to be bitter towards Kate because she also had to face the truth that Anthony was not in love with her but actually her sister and Kate reciprocated those feelings.I think she made it seem as if Kate’s intentions were in vain but actually the quite opposite she obviously never intended to hurt her but she has precisely ever wanted for her is everything she as ever done for her is for her to be happy and deserve love as much as anyone else which is why she always suppressed her feelings because if there was ever a thought to do something for herself it would cause some sense of guilt because all she has ever done is for her family which obviously didn’t turn out well as Daphne said “these kind of feeling always come to the surface such as love”. But did Edwina consider this???
But I do like her overall character development
The moment when she was like “was I truly that blind”🤔🤔
Yasss!!! Girrrrl you were quite blind
I don’t know how you missed it !!!

She wasn't even all that angry at Anthony because Kate is the one whom she loves. Edwina is extremely close to her family so that's why the betrayal hurts so much when it comes from them.
But an extreme-case scenario like Kate almost dying is dramatic enough to jolt Edwina out of her grudge. It all makes sense.

While their storyline is not as interesting as the others, it's still a necessary component to the shows world building. They're a struggling (and socially unpopular) family in the ton...not newbies like the Sharma sisters. And I think the scammer cousin plot was to ultimately show the cunningness of a regent matriarch in a patriarchal society and to progress Colin and Penelopes story

It makes me so happy every time someone comments to agree that Benedict deserves more hype! THE BEST BRIDGERTON SIBLING! 🗣❤️

Thank you for making so many videos on this LOL. I am also OBSESSED with Kanthony in a way that I haven't been with a TV couple since Jamie & Claire in season one of Outlander. The chemistry is OFF THE CHARTS. I so hope we get a substantial amount of screen time with them in season 3!

Love this analysis but I thought Benedict knew. He just didn't have the proof that Daphne did.

I loved this season. So much of #Kanthony can be found in the small details as well as the big moments.

I actually think Penelope was looking at the new Lord Featherington and Prudence. She's clueless. Also, Benedict slightly suspects something is going on with Anthony and Kate. I think Mom Bridgerton asked Daphne to confirm because siblings are more likely to divulge their love interests to each other than to their parents... Just my thoughts.
