Excellent. People need to know what BYU Scholars are teaching our youth. It is different to have discussions like your interview, but when they teach the prophets are wrong the embers of the church need to know. Today.s atmosphere illustrates the need to stand up and speak out. But if the members do not know, they cannot. Keep up the good work
I saw the petition a few days ago. I hesitated signing it because I didn't want to be critical of the church. I actually signed it because it is always good to do self reflection and look for ways to improve. If the Board of Directors aren't aware of something happening at the school, how can they evaluate it or look for improvement? I have heard of questionable theory being taught at BYU, but not out right continually teaching against basic church doctrine. It is upsetting to me. I would bet that more students don't speak out in classes and support the church doctrine because they are afraid of the grade they would receive from the professor.
I don't think signing the petition is being critical of the church. There are plenty of petitions out there trying to push these dangerous social ideologies forward.
So just a little questions, we have youth that are calling Leaders to the point of keeping what should be kept? Please lets all stand together and yes make the stand. Fall where it may the Truth is to stand for accuracy not excuses to change Gods law to match world changing needs
Hannah is amazing! Only interacted with her on Twitter in the past, so it's great to see this type of long-form conversation to really see her personality and intelligence shine through. Thanks Greg! (I'm sad I didn't see this until now)
As I was listening to this I couldn't help but think that too many people feel the need to 'understand" all things - especially in an educational setting. Instead of viewing all worldly philosophies through a lenses of testimony and a filter of "maybe that is something I cannot understand yet", people try to fit everything they know and hear into "boxes" that they have already labeled. I really feel that eternal principles are college level courses that we as "3rd grade level" learners need to accept as something we can't understand yet. All this knowledge will become clear eventually but we are not ready for the nuanced information yet. We are still working on the basics.
For example, gender identity, same gender attraction and all the life issues that come with this. How can we even begin to understand why people struggle with these issues in the first place? We can do scientific analysis of the brain to see how these issues affect us biologically but how are we even supposed to begin to understand gender in pre-mortal life, spirit versus mortal body in this life and the condition of our resurrected bodies later. All we know is "gender is eternal". That is such an ambiguous statement. We know there is an infinite number of ways our mortal bodies can develop, function and malfunction. When we have gender identity issues, is that a brain issue? A body issue? How much of our mortal body plays into this and how much of our spirit? Does our pre-mortal spirit even care really? We would have had to agree to this condition of our mortal bodies before we were born because of free agency. If there was nothing to be learned from these issues, it would not exist. There has to be a reason some people have these issues. And what does it mean to be a man or a woman in the eternities? It is mind boggling. I am willing to wait to find out and cut people some slack in this mortal life. We all have our own issues to deal with in this life and who says my issues are any "better" than your issues. In the end we all have to face Jesus, and thank goodness he loves us unconditionally. The proof is in our love for Him, really. So, wouldn't you say these are college level courses? I am probably not even asking the right questions with my 3rd grade understanding. I am willing to wait for this class 😉.
So, in the end, what I DO know is that we are supposed to follow the law of chastity, marriage between a man and a woman is eternal, and the law of sacrifice asks us to put God's will above our own - not because He wants to oppress us but because He loves us. When people feel the need to protest it is because they want things their own way. Going back to the 3rd grade analogy, it's like a third grade class getting together to protest multiplication. They think they know better and that the teacher should change things because the 3rd graders don't understand. We need to trust.
I appreciate that. I think one of the issues is that with the "multiplication" analogy, the teachers, despite the protesting, know why it is good for the students to learn multiplication. But with many of the "tests" that you have mentioned, we don't know why they are given, though we may have a vague understanding of opposition and sacrifice. I agree that "in the end", "we need trust".
Hannah hit the nail on the head when she said the University, Maxwell Institute cares too much about being a world-class institution and accepted by the secular world. That was never their purpose.
I sincerely hope that this issue will be taken up with the Brethren and taken care of for the sake of our children! Let's take Heavenly Father's divine broom (A Douglas E. Brinley quote from his book AMERICA IN PERIL) and sweep these people off the campus! I have seen some of this myself, as an author, being the rebel of the group for QUOTING JOSEPH SMITH! Even today I have been accused of teaching false Doctrine by quoting Bruce R. McConkie! It's so sad that this type of thing has crept into our church run school. I know I'm old...a grandmother of 17...but the Gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints is the word of God. That word has NOT changed! I'm so sad.
People like Hanna offer some optimism. But don't hold your breath! I can see a day, very soon, where we will choose not to reference many of the Prophets and leaders of the church because of something did or said. It is like someone being fired from their job because of a tweet from ten years ago.
I've never been PC so I will not stop using the Brethren as references! I might be released from my callings but I won't let the "woke" culture stop me. The time I was accused of teaching false doctrine a member of the Stake Presidency was in my class and thankfully he didn't take exception to what I said. We were discussing Isaiah. I worked for two weeks to have the proper information about his teachings. Sigh. I just hope the Savior comes soon. Thank you for what you are doing.

Gender at 3:48. Gender as a social construct is big in the social sciences. Professors at BYU who say that are coming from Women's Studies, Sociology, and Political Science.
Gender is an eternal principle and that it was given to each of us. As Hannah was talking about this, a thought struck me. We know that agency or the ability to chose is an eternal principle, in fact it was that principle that the War in Heaven was, and is continuing to be, fought over. We have been taught that we were first intelligences. What if, as intelligence we had no gender and that we in fact chose to be born into God's family as a male or as a female spirit. So each of us was given the choice to be male or female in the pre-existance.
I really liked this interview. And agree with where Hanna is coming from. However I feel I need to say something about 15 to 20 in around gay/gender issues. I don’t mean to be offensive, or cause trouble, I just want to share my point of view as a gay member of the church. You referenced elder Bednar’s talk. Which I do agree with wholeheartedly. I have discovered in this journey that my sexuality is sooooooo much more than sexual behaviour. It’s also about how I relate to myself, the world, other males and females. Ways that have nothing to do with sexual behaviour. By saying I should just forget the fact that I’m gay and just identify as a ‘child of God’, completely dismisses this other part of who I am. @@CwicShow She sounded very liberal to me. I don't think we should question what the Prophet says. Why would anyone want to change the name of BYU and tear Brigham Young's monument down. I believe we should respect the gay community, but we don't have to agree with their views. Marriage is between a man and a woman. I wish your Come Follow Me's came out each Monday. I couldn't find this weeks, but I see it was posted this morning. I enjoy the Come Follow Me lessons. Thanks for responding to my comment.
You should listen to it again. I don't mind if she's liberal, but she is definitely not. The whole reason I interviewed her was because an article was written about her in the Salt Lake Tribune standing up for the Family Proclamation. You should give it another chance.
By the way, I will have people on the interviews that are "liberal". I want dialogue. But I would never support anything that went against the church.
I will hopefully be able to get ahead of things here shortly and get the new Come Follow Me episodes out the week before.
Thanks for watching!
Maxwell Institute should be changed to the Pride Institute.
I'm reserving judgment.
