I just bought a 2013 Prius 3 with almost 60,000 miles on it. I'm not entirely sure if the dealer had the oil and filter changed, so this video has been VERY HELPFUL! Thank you.
Cedric M, Trust me the dealer didn't change the oil because even after 10k miles the oil looks clean on the Toyota Prius Hybrid, You did good by changing it and never go off the look of the look of the oil, alway 10k miles with full synthetic motor oil. _Randomfix
Hi Steve, Thanks for sharing and I agree when the possible change you own oil. I get free oil changes with my toyota and I still prefer to do it myself as it I can be down in 10 minutes or less instead of waiting around for someone else. _Randomfix
Great advice. I'm thinking of upgrading from a Gen2 to a Gen3 Prius, and though this looks like the oil change is a bit more complicated on the Gen3 than my 2005 Prius, your step by step instructions make it easy for me to understand.
Awesome video thank you,, I wish you lived close to me,, you seem trustworthy,, I love the attention to detail,, it's hard to find a good mechanic these days that you can trust I live in Los Angeles
Rich, thank you so much for the great feedback. I find it easy to find trust worthy mechanics at smaller shops. Just go when you do have a problem and hang out with them and talk about life and most are cools guys. Here is a pro tip, if you see a shot install parts using power tools run, power tool are Greta for removal but when install parts it's easy to or torque everything. I always hand install.
Your welcome and I think you will enjoy the process. I can be done with an oil change in under 15 minutes and you know you will do a good job. I'm here to help if needed.
Next oil change at the dealer, I'm taking a parts bucket. Last oil change a new cartridge was on the passenger seat. Service said they brought an extra out and assured me a new filter was installed. I don't burn or leak oil but I'm about half full. In the chopstick and I'm going to need a tool to unscrew the filter cap - is on super tight.
I just got a 3rd gen Prius (my 2nd gen was totaled last month in a wreck). The plastic flap that you have to use to access the oil pan and filter.... is there someway of removing it and putting it back on correctly? Or did you just cut yours off? After I removed the pop screws that hold it in place with the rest of the aerodynamic shrouds mine only seemed to fold back, but was still a pain in the ass and totally in the way. I was using drive up on car stands like you are using and the flap was where I was constantly fighting with it. i'm going to try getting the filter wrench from Amazon that you suggested. For the FIRST TIME in my entire life (I'm 46) I didn't change the filter. The filter wrench that Autozone had that looked like the one in your video, wouldn't stay seated and break the seal (someone didn't lube the O ring most likely and it is seized to the block). I busted my knuckles several times even using a breaker bar and was unsuccessful in getting the filter loose.... I hate the new cartridge style filter, A bad move on Toyota's part IMO. Old fashioned oil filters were superior at ease of dealing with on my 2nd gen.
Hi There, Sorry to hear about your struggle with the oil filter, did you ever get it off? I had a similar experience on a Toyota Corolla. After resetting the engine oil change light, when does it come on again? by date or by miles? If by miles, is it 3000 miles or regular oil or 8000 miles for synthenic oil? thanks
I normally drive more than average but I think it 5000 miles and I'm not sure about timing and I think it's a combination of both. So if only drive 1,000 miles a year it will turn after a year as well. Happy new year's _Randomfix
No mention of replacing the drain plug gasket. I have strip the drain plug thread on another car oil pan after multiple removal. I bought a good torque wrench and properly torque the drain plug to 29 ft-lb and the oil filter cover to 15-23 ft-lb especially with all cars now having aluminum oil pans. Living to hot Southern California I always use 10W40 oil and not the 0W20 recommended oil. When temperature exceed 100 degrees we want the higher viscosity oil and not the 20 weight. Never had engine problems in multiple cars over 35 years. Lose a little gas mileage but in the long run cheaper than excessive wear on our engines.
My oil pan is magnetic which means it is Not aluminum. I've never seen an aluminum drain pan on any car we've owned. Still if you over-torque a drain bolt you will eventually strip it out.

This 3rd 2010ish model actually consume oil. Check carcomplants.com for additional information
Huh, I didn't think it was because the exhaust doesn't look or smell bad.
My mom's Honda sight burnt 1 quart of oil every 1k miles and that too did not have smoke exhaust.
Thanks. Great detailed info. I appreciate it!

Great video!
Thank you so much for the great feedback
Thank you bro. 🤜🏼
David, I'm glad to help my brother.
Just curious. Since the front is lilted up, will it drain all of the oil out?
In short yes, you can never get all of the oil out even on a lift, but 99% will drain out.
Where do I buy a QUALITY replacement oil filter cartridge? Is SYNTHETIC oil preferred?
Amazon has quality and cheaper than the rest. Walmart has quality also and not much more expensive. They even have the Toyota filter.
Sorry for the late reply! did you find a solution?
Did you cut off the plastic access panel? Mine sort of hangs there getting in the way.
The plastic trim that covers the oil pan? There is normally a 10mm bolt that holds the panel on.
Thank-you, great detailed information!

Good job
Thanks
So I can save money changing my oil by buying a 1 million dollar garage. Thanks for the tip.
WHO mentioned a million dollar garage?
@RANDOMFIX It wasn't mentioned, it was implicitly visualized in the video.
so detailed, nice
Thank you for your feedback, much apprecated!
Thank you.
thank you for the feedback!
How do you remove the panel??
The little cutaway on the button? It’s is a Phillips or you can use a 10mm socket.
What roof rack is this?
Thule
How to set the miles? example 3000mile
I think it is preset at every 5k miles
should be almost the same on my Yaris Hybrid (1.5L, 2012 model, European)
Antonio, yes you are correct all oil change almost the same. _Randomfix
After resetting the engine oil change light, when does it come on again? by date or by miles? If by miles, is it 3000 miles or regular oil or 8000 miles for synthenic oil? thanks

sorry I just updated it Oil Filter Wrench http:/amzn.to/2xasT2R
good shit bro

My local mechanic charges $20 to change the oil (when I take oil and filter with me).
I appreciate your constructive comments, thank you for the feedback!
It's easier to take the filter off before the drain plug
Thank you for sharing
What about lube points
what do you mean lube points?
You need to be more specific on your tools other than an oil filter wrench. Be specific what exactly is the legitimate number tool
Looks like this one...

I think you've forgotten to remove oil filter Holder.
not sure what you mean?
Oil filter holder??
Why doesn't it fit I called it a few names still not turning
What's not turning, the oil filter.
No mention of replacing the drain plug gasket. I have strip the drain plug thread on another car oil pan after multiple removal. @@stevensevek6151 -- My '05 vw passat 2.0 diesel had an alu oil pan.
Good info, but work on your tone bro, it’s soo monotonous!
Sam thanks for the feedback. _Randomfix
After how many miles did you change your oil on this one?
Can I do 10000 on 0W20?
Toyota says 10k miles on synthetic 0_20 oil. If you are warmer climate and you have 100k miles and over look into 5_20 synthetic. Good luck.
Thank you for this video!
Glad to help
