- We hit the track in hopes to set records, well those hopes turned too dreams when my Camaro's differential blew up. I guess we can be happy it wasn't anything worse, but I am told at these power levels we should expect these sorts of things. Time to order a bunch of backups. Join me as we tear this differential down and see what failed.

Yep. Seen that firsthand. I built a 55 Chevy in my teens in the late 80s. Hand me down 4 bolt 350 block, Lunati crank, TRW forged pistons, novel for the time split duration Crane cam, double hump heads cut for springs and guide plates, and stripped the ring gear on the 2nd drive. Lol! Good times...

Feels.. spider gears are weak in the 5th gen also.. I managed to send a chunk through my diff cover last year.
Yeah I have an automatic too and I blew my rear end yesterday. I was using a tuner to tweak the timing a little and adjust the fuel ratio and when I've used launch mode I've heard a noise for a while but didn't think about it. Well it is supposed to hold at 2000 rpm in launch mode and it went above that and I heard a crunch. Then it wouldn't drive it barely made it to the side of the road. Then I put it back in gear and was able to drive it but it was a one legger. If I gave It gas it pulled hard right which told me the left was the only drive tire. I was able to get it home but it crunched some more and now it's done. So now it's either pay $4700 for Chevrolet to do it or think about doing it myself. I see one with 2.77 gears for $1000 which makes the gear ratio a little higher. I thought I remember it being 3.55 when I bought it. So I look at the specs of the rear end and it says it's rated for 420 horsepower. I know with what little I've done in mods may have added between 25 and 30 horsepower so it was too much for the rear end. Not sure if I can find one rated higher. Maybe a ZL1 rear end k don't know.
Thought these rear ends would be a lot better....what the heck..

How do u normally remove the axle cups on the rear differential
I tough u had replace all bushings and control arms in the back??

I just blew out my diff on my 2012 2SS Hennessey HPE650. I’ll bet mine looks very similar when I pull it off. It was an extremely sad day.

We need due to the demarcation pads, how many should there be and what kind?

Blew mine up! and it's an automatic, not driver error I only owned the car 4 months previous owner must have abused the hell out of it. Kicker is GM has a parts shortage and cant get the 1 part I need to rebuild been in the shop 2 months.

It’s possible. But we believe the damage was done when the trans broke.

Is this the stock SS rear diff? Who manufacturers this rear diff? What size is the ring gear?

@@jacobespinosa3806 yea I was doing a hard pull, over 100 and transmission fluid got all over the place. Bought a used rear differential. Yep got it fixed the following week. $700 for the part
@@brandonwilkins6816 perfect iam going to put new diff this week hopefully that will fix it I got a hole in my cooler from broken peace in my diff
@@jacobespinosa3806 yea that should fix it. Remember transmission fluid is connected to the rear differentiall internal cooler. So if you install the new rear differential and your car doesn’t move then you’ll know that you need transmission fluid.

Why didn't you buy a MUCH STRONGER differential housing from STRANGE?!?!
I also recommend using Crown Gears & an EATON TruTrac Differential. You won't break it.
The OE differential is OK. But not built to withstand the strain of the extra torque you're creating.
If ya' wanna' cure your wheel-hop issue, upgrade the OE components with quality BMR parts. Respectfully,
