I've just been working on my first garageband track using the virtual session drummer (instead of just vocal and guitar) it's been a learning curve - but good fun as well! Beats a click track for sure 😝
@@PeteJohnsMusic This is where my stuff to date is - I'll let you know when the new one with the drums is up in a week or so 👍🏻 youtube.com/@surefootstumbler?si=Q2-X_IZimn9tVsgW 'Splashdown' and 'Navigate' are my faves so far - rough, but hey - gotta start somewhere - and you've been a big help bud! 😝
No. 7 - Fix it in the mix! It's hard to admit how long it took me to learn the lesson that it should already sound great BEFORE the mix; and if it doesn't, it's not ready to mix. Great stuff, Pete!
So true about analogue vs digital. Recording in an analogue studio with my daughter and her songs - old school - and yeah - it's louder for sure. Mix sounds fantastic but!
You nailed it with updating your DAW too soon. I remember trying to upgrade to Logic after using GarageBand for only a year and feeling overwhelmed. I immediately went back to GarageBand and truly learned it inside out for years. When I finally felt like I outgrew it, I opened up Logic again and everything made perfect sense. I feel like the same could go with compression. Use an 1176 or LA2A. They’re very limited but effective. After a while you’ll train your ear to hear the subtle differences. Makes reaching for a compressor with extensive controls not as daunting. Moral of the story, exploring your creativity within limited parameters can lead to deeper/expedited learning. imo

100%! It’s a tough one to learn as it feels like mixing should be able to perform magic and fix everything.

Yup. Usually less is more.
