I'd just pack 2 different size pots and use them for molds and I'd cut little squares with my old knife, not as convenient but it's free , and I'm broke. Wish that I could make your beautiful bread. I like your headbands too. Best wishes to you and yours ! 💙 🙏
Happy Valentine's day to you and your family! It is fun that both you and hubby are vlog makers. It helps when you're busy we still get to visit the farm!. This is quite interesting. Never seen anything like them before. Would you use those mostly for things that you're planting at home on your farm? Would you take them to market and if so how would you wrap them? My guess is You need to plant them while it's .still moist and not let him dry out. If they were in your tray side by side they would probably hold together fine? Looks like it would build some good muscles especially if you're doing it for Farmers markets. Hats off to you. I will be interested to see how it pans out for you. I found myself wondering if you Have hooks you could hang your camera for an overhead view? Nice how you continue to teach and look for other ways to support our earth. 💙
I’m starting my seeds in the 5 x 5 trays from Bootstrap Farmer. When I need to up pot them, I’m moving the into your limited edition cups that I was able to get. They are really pretty and I can plant the tomatoes deeper in them 😊
Soil blocks dry out really fast, you may have to water 2-3 x a day. 💡 BUT very tall clear covers or mini-row covers for the tray (lol) will help retain humidity.
Gooood morning! Soo exciting to be getting close to seed starting time. Little early for Pennsylvania still, so it's great to be able to live vicariously through you guys in the south. Thanks as always for the wonderful tips!
Hi Beautiful Lady!! Just stopping by real quick to say hi and because of one of your videos last year I went ahead and started my own garden...did i make a lot of mistakes? Yes, and am learning more this year my 2nd year ever to try and grow my own food...i remember what you said...once you taste your own home grown food that will do it for ya...greetings from southern california...PS...you have a great smile 🙂
I grabbed 2 sets of ur pot collection from BF. Started my seeds in them already, they look so pretty. I cannot wait for the next collection. Maybe pastels or neons would be great. 😉
Greetings. Fellow RUclips-er here. 👋 I too, liked the idea of the "soil blocks". But...I found, once you put them all in your 1020 tray, start your seeds, the roots get all entangled. It can be a bit nerve racking.(used them at a commercial greenhouse in Springdale AR). I simply collect old pots and trays from the big box stores at the end of the season, every year. No cost to me and keeping them our of our land fills. Just me. I hope y'all are enjoying the new beautiful Homestead. Have a beautiful day. 😁💚🌱
Starting my spring seeds this week! YES! Have been using a soil blocker for two years now and love it - especially at transplant time! And up-potting is a breeze. Sending Blessings!
Yes me too! I love them! FYI: Mix your soil 4:1 with water. Makes the perfect consistency 😉 Also you really don’t want your typical “fluffy” seed starting soil for making soil blocks. Leave out the peat for sure 👍 They will hold together much better!
I was just wondering what the white stuff is that’s sprinkled on top of the soil in your harvest pots? Can’t wait to start my lettuce in my harvest pots this week.
What do you put each individual soil block in when selling them at plant sale? Or does the person buying them have their own containers to then transfer them to?
I made my first soil blocks a few days ago. I was so relieved it went well and they haven’t fallen apart or dried out. I’m nervous that the trays I repurposed are too high off the warmers and my basement is too cold… but always learning and adjusting… and I’m in Nebraska so these are just spring crops, and I have time to tweak my system before tomatoes and peppers.
That's a neat tool!! We will have to pick up one of those soil block makers asap!! We are new to the homesteading community, closing out our 1st year this march. Here to pick up any tips and tricks. God Bless
This may seem like a weird request, but I would LOVE if the sounds and video of coffee making was left in. It makes me feel all cozy and happy for some reason. LOL
Your “dimples “are actually the bigger ones that is made for the smaller soil blocker and the smaller ones fit inside of that square “dimple”. You are correct I don’t think it was quite wet enough.
Are the bottom trays you used for the individual bootstrap pots different from the regular 1020 trays? Mine don’t seem to line up or sit that well in them, but I also haven’t put soil in them yet. Not sure if I got the right trays for them or not.
Not starting seed till late March or April. Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. I'm wacthing while I wait for a doe in labor, yes a Valentine's Day present of life. Thank you for sharing. God Bless till next time.
What is the best mulch to use in a green house for raised beds. I have the choice between old woods chips that have started breaking down and has some fungus growing in it. Hay. Dried oak leaves… not sure what’s best choice. Somebody please help there’s not much info I have found online pertained to specifically in green house
@@WhisperingWillowFarm I haven’t had a soil sample yet but it’s city barn compost and I amended with rabbit manure. Is that enough or should I put in some wood ash?
I think that Nicole from Flower Hill Farm uses straight compost for her soil blocks. I have not done them myself, so I do not know! But it seems to have worked for her:)
You may want to check out The Gardener’s Workshop with Lisa Mason Ziegler. She has a pretty comprehensive section there on soil blocking. They also have a YT channel. I think you’re supposed to use a certain soil mixture which is completely different from a regular potting or seed starting mix. I’m not sure if you’re supposed to wet it that much but I could be wrong.
Hey Jill I have a question about your berkey water system? Hope king died your filter last on it? And can you clean the filter? To make it last you longer?
I've only had a small raised bed garden for a couple of years, so I'm still quite new. Question about the soil blockers, I thought that seeds needed a loose soil that isn't packed tight to establish a strong root system. Am I just making that up? LOL Wouldn't the tightly packed blocks hinder root growth?
You definitely didn't make that up Lori, you are right that they need loose soil. Even though it gets packed in tight to the blocks, as long as the mix itself is light and not heavy or compact the roots still can find thier way through.
Hey Y'all, That was funny you brought up the bootstrap farmer cause I ordered from them last Monday and it came last Friday 5, days later, there is no supply shortage there because they MAKE what they SELL so it is always on hand. The gal on You can't eat the grass youtube channel has some good soil blocker videos from about two springs ago or so you can look for those. I thought to get them but the cost made me move it out a year or two on the budget. They do seem to be a g=very green alternative to plastic use for sure. God bless y'all take care bye for now
With Rheumatoid Arthritis, I'm sure my hands would never be able to press those blocks out! It would be nice to be able to use soil blocks, but I think it would frustrate more than help me.
🙋hi from Scotland hi Jill I have just started to sow my seeds I would love to use a soil blocker but the cheapest one I can see for sale is the equivalent to sixty seven us dollars here in the UK that's about fifty pounds far to expensive but they do look amazing thank you for showing how they work I look forward to seeing how you get on with them for now I will stick to my modules take care Anne Scott from Scotland ❄️❄️

Absolutely brilliant Jill 🌸🦋🌸
Plant the seeds in the tiny blocks. When it’s time to pot-up simply drop the tiny block into the dimple on the larger block

Great question. Ideally you would want to up pot them when they get about 3-4" tall and have good root systems
What happens when you water? Still bottom water? Does it not disintegrate?
Definitely bottom water, the idea is to get the blocks really compacted in the trays so they don't have room to disseminate
I love using the soil blocks!

I want to learn how to do soil blocking too! Thanks for bringing us along
Glad I found your RUclips channel Love learning from you and your farm is very nice.
Love the head wrap. It's beautiful.
I'm excited to see y'all trying this method. It's great when you don't have the funds to buy a lot of trays and pots.
I have never gotten he consistency correct on the seed blocks, but as I am not starting many plants.... I am in no rush. Bread looks tasty!
Soil blocks are absolutely my preference. They're amazing!
Good morning friend, so happy to see you.

Hello there
When you start seeds using soil blocks. How do you water them without them falling apart?
Bottom watering with a tray underneath
highly suggest jim kovaleski's trays, 3 sides is easier to get the blocks out of the tray

The headbands are from the Natural Life. We will be selling them on our website in a couple weeks.

I was interested in getting into those soil blockers. I think it would be a lot easier to get the starts out to transplant. Thanks for sharing
They're awesome. Do it. Also, hi.
@@MorePranaGardens haha hey there
I was just wondering what the white stuff is that’s sprinkled on top of the soil in your harvest pots? Can’t wait to start my lettuce in my harvest pots this week.
It’s fox farms super light seed starting mix. I don’t have anything started in them the kids were just playing with them! Lol
Do you sanitize the trays before you use them the first time and how do you sanitize them?
Yes we do, we mix hydrogen peroxide with water
Its so cold & icy here.. Hearing 64 degrees I am so jealous lol
Hello dawn
What do you put each individual soil block in when selling them at plant sale? Or does the person buying them have their own containers to then transfer them to?
Soil blocks are designed to start seeds for transplanting. I wouldn't sell them that way
That’s is a very nice gadget you have for seedlings.

Happy Valentines Day Jill!
I’m about to start my seeds. I’m so excited 😆😋🥰
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought you pack the soil in one tray then section that soil with the soil blocker. Like a cookie or biscuit cutter
You can do it that way also
What will happen when you go to water the soil blocks, won't they fall apart?
Not if you bottom water them
Are the bottom trays you used for the individual bootstrap pots different from the regular 1020 trays? Mine don’t seem to line up or sit that well in them, but I also haven’t put soil in them yet. Not sure if I got the right trays for them or not.

I personally would use the leaves or wood chips. Have you gotten a soil sample tested yet? Make sure and add calcium yearly
