    Ben Simmons will probably not report to the Philadelphia 76ers training camp as he is interested in a trade to another team. With disappointing finishes in the playoffs the past 2 years, the process has now fallen off the rails due to poor roster construction. Why does Sixers GM Daryl Morey want so much in return? Coach Nick breaks down Simmons - both his immense positives and troubling issues to explain why it isn't working and the Sixers and Simmons need a change.

    i think it’s pretty proven at this point that Doc is a subpar/average coach at best. every team he’s coached has underperformed in the playoffs, and even with boston they didn’t meet expectations with only being able to win one ring. lack of adaptability on his part is going to continue to be a detriment to his team, with or without simmons tbh. so it’s definitely not all on simmons, good breakdown to show that.

      The C's didn't underachieve. People's expectations are always too high when these "superteams" are formed. The C's didn't have a long window to begin with because of the age of the Big 3 when they got together (all of them were over 30) then Miami formed their own Big 3 in 2010-11. So the C's only really had a 3 season window. They won the first season, KG got injured in the 2nd season and they lost, and in the third season they went to GM. 7 of the Finals and fell just short.

    Great point about the handoffs. They did run plays with him receiving handoffs during the season. They completely stopped running it in the playoffs. If he doesn't improve his free throws though, the playoffs will continue to be an issue for him. At this point, it has started to completely kill his confidence and is flowing through to the rest of his game.

      @@bballbreakdown Firstly I don't think that the analysis of Simmons misses te very basic point that in truth during the Hawks series he was under utilised and coincidentally Embiid was over utilised and basically ran out of gas. The was my big take of the series it was not Simmons in particular that was a problem for me but the whole offensive sets appeared to be an action that went nowhere pretty quickly. I can only put that down to Rivers and that is where I think the first brick of blame should be.
      My second point and indeed problem is that without the spacing or involvement or off ball action 76er remained static so no matter who was in there you were looking at tougher shots.
      In my view I agree that Simmons has not real improved in his game and his offensive output suits him playing i a small ball line up and I think they should make Embiid sit for longer and give Simmons more free reign with the second team but I suspect there is just some of he poorest offensive selections I have seen. Putting anyone in the dunker spot with no action either off ball or on ball is a recipe for disaster, not having set that end with Simmons going down hill is again a recipe for disaster. Now if they got those thing right I don't think they lose.
      We appear to be having a hard look at Simmons but we are giving some of the worst coaching I have seen from Rivers a pass

    • @Superhero18
      @Superhero18 3 года назад +2

      @@bballbreakdown Thing with the handoffs, is that Ben's first, second and third play is to drive the ball. Unlike live dynamic ball guards like CP3/Donovan Mitchell, Ben doesn't have(or rather doesn't take, or perhaps both who cares) mid-range jump shots. So even if you hand it off to Ben, eventually teams will continue to sag in, since there's not much distance from him/Embiid. This means it's not just a Simmons/Embiid issue, it means Simmons can't play really with any five in the league at least on the offensive end of the floor.
      Even on a team like Minnesota, where KAT is the "ideal" 5, even KAT would have to sacrifice the diversity of his game to be more perimeter oriented. Whether in Philly or on another team, it's actually Ben that has to make sacrifices, and make himself a viable off-ball weapon somehow to be able to compete at the game's highest levels.

    • @shauno20
      @shauno20 3 года назад

      @bballbreakdown I think the reason they stopped running handoffs to Ben was because they knew that he would be fouled going into the lane, and be back at the line bricking free throws. Not sure if this was a coaching decision, or a confidence thing on Bens part

    Thousands of players in NBA history couldn't shoot very well when they entered the league. Some worked at it and improved. Nothing we've seen from Simmons shows he wants to join that group. So he'll remain something like Draymond Green: good defender, good passer, can't shoot. But the HUGE difference is that Draymond has endless heart, knows his role perfectly and is always moving. Show me a play where Draymond stands around in the dunker's spot waiting for something to happen, or gets in the way of the play.
    If Simmons refuses to improve his shot ( old news: it's always a good idea to shoot with the correct hand) then he needs to amp up his energy like Draymond or he's just going to spiral downward in the confidence he has in himself and the confidence coaches have in him.

    Whatever team Ben ends up on, they need to work on basically turning him into Draymond Green on offense in the half-court, but with more athleticism and size. That's part of what makes the Simmons-for-McCollum-and-stuff trade so interesting: we get to see Ben and Dame working as a worse-shooting but more athletic version of the Steph/Draymond combo that's been so effective for so long.

      At some point Draymond did and was decent shooting 3s, not really anymore. Like sure he takes more 3s than Ben but literally who doesn’t? He’s awful at them so it doesn’t matter much. I don’t love the Draymond Ben comparisons either but I get what people are trying to say. It’s just so hard because there has to be a team willing to basically make huge roster changes to optimize around Ben. You really need Ben to play the 5 and then have a ton of shooting around him, or you need to have a 5 like KAT where he is so good spacing the floor.
      Maybe another option is MEM with JJJr if he can stay healthy but then you really need Ja to become a good 3P shooter. Same with Fox/SAC.
      Basically any team Ben goes to they’d need to make changes around him. That’s why a trade probably really needed to happen before FA this year, like on draft night or something. If you’re taking on Simmons you need an off-season to make other changes. So at this point I can’t imagine if he gets traded it being to a good team. It would have to be a team that believes in Simmons a lot and would make small changes as the season goes on to fit better around him, even if that meant they end up being a bad team this season, then make even bigger changes next off-season.
      So while the CJ Ben thing could be cool, you’d really need to move Nurkic and try to maybe land like Myles Turner or something. And considering they have no 1sts to trade because they protected the 1st they sent to CHI until 2027…that’d be really hard to do. Plus the Lillard CJ relationship is real. I doubt they want to split them up even if it’s probably for the better.

    His lack of aggression is down to 3 things : 1) Ben himself getting mentally penetrated (this can be caused by the next point) 2) doc not finding ways to work around ATL game plan with Ben 3) Sixers teammates not supporting Ben (this can be a result of the coaching). If one of your main players is getting mentally penetrated you need to find a way to get his head back in the game and utilise him properly, what’s clear here is that Doc didn’t have an answer for ATL game plan which as a result fell back on Ben being taken out of the game physically and mentally, which than lost the support of the players around him. So after all that it doesn’t help that doc shifted blame on Ben in the press conference

    I've been saying for years "Ben Simmons is just tall". The only other thing he does particularly well is pass. His defense, while great, isn't all that impressive. It's easy to be a great defender when you're 6'9" and playing point guard, meaning most of your assignments are significantly shorter than you are. It's not like he's banging with Giannis or Gobert or something. This is why he never learned to shoot. He didn't have to when he's bigger than his average defender and then he learned to pass when the help defender came. If he ends up being forced to play forward because he can't shoot, the other side of his game is gonna get exposed too.

    Does Doc not use secondary actions at all? There is the screen for embiid and to get the ball up top, then Ben goes the block, what should happen then is a screen to the corner, usually Curry, who can cut baseline. Which opens up a bunch of options: he's open for a layup, both men scramble to him and Ben just turns around for a layup, Ben's man follows then Ben just seals and walks into a layup or postup, screen and roll with embiid, or handoff with Embiid to, which likely has an open Curry on the otherside if the other two set screen as he comes around. IF none of that works you still have Embiid ISO on one side of the floor with likely a smaller guy attempting to help off Simmons leading to at least marginally easier shot than two bigs in the way.

    Interesting video and takes, but Ben Simmons is the problem not Doc Rivers. Remember Ben Simmons not only can't shoot, but he won't shoot outside the paint and can't shoot free throws. Yes, he's an excellent passer, rebounder, defender, and can finish with the best of them. All of the so called "adjustments" you say could help to make Ben Simmons more effective will be marginal at best. Remember he can't shoot. That part is on him. Face facts, right now Ben Simmons is a bigger more athletic Draymond Green. That's the right comparison. Even if he had his own team and surrounded him with shooters, he may get you to the playoffs, but he won't get far. Why?
    Because in the playoffs, you play good teams, and they have time to prepare. They would take away what he does best and force him to his weaknesses you know the poor jump shot and free throw shooting. Remember the play in game 7 vs the Hawks when he passed up a dunk. Why did he do that? Fear of getting fouled and having to shoot free throws. When a player can't shoot free throws, it gets in their head and they become less aggressive, so they tend to stop attacking the basket and become more passive. I repeat Ben Simmons is the problem. Just look at Giannis. He always been willing to shoot outside the paint even when he couldn't, but now he has a respectable J and is pretty much un guardable now. Ben needs to take notes from Giannis or else he won't ever reach his potential. Ben needs to work on his game more than anything else.

    In fact, in that 7-game series he averaged just under 10 points per game, on 32% shooting from the line.

  • @Urgelt
    @Urgelt 3 года назад +1

    The 'Philly Experiment was this: use the point guard position to add a non-shooting, elite defensive player.
    Simmons doesn't have gravity, the way elite point guards do. He has *reverse* gravity. The further he is from the basket, the more defenders will pay attention to Simmon's teammates and the more they will sag off of him. As a point guard, he makes life *more difficult* for his teammates.
    The Philly Experiment didn't work. Who has ever heard of hack-the-point-guard? But that's what we have in Simmons.
    What's left for the guy? Center or power forward. Franchises prefer centers and power forwards who can space the floor, but there's still room in this league for centers and power forwards who can't do that. (He'll have to learn not to camp down low on offense where his defender clogs up driving lanes, though.)
    The Sixers expect to get a premium trade package for Simmons. I don't think they will. Nobody else wants to duplicate the Philly Experiment. And as a power forward or center, Simmons isn't in the elite ranks of guys who can space the floor. He's good in many aspects of the game, but this is a shooter's league now. A guy who can't shoot is at best a role player, not a franchise-leading player.

    I pray the Kings don’t trade for him. Simmons and Haliburton will be looking at each other as the shot clock is winding down like, “you shoot it”, “no, your shoot it”.

    Just face it that the Hawks outplayed and outlasted the 76ers. Give credit to the Atlanta Hawks for being the better team last season.

    Coach can you make a video showing which teams would be the best fit for Ben? Would be amazing to see something like the Bulls video where you edit the play from different games. Thank you in advance🙏🏼

      I’ll see what I can do but I think we’re all experiencing a little Simmons fatigue 😔

    Simmons would be perfect with the Spurs. They can fix his mental issues and develop his shot. Plus Gregg Popovich would know exactly how to maximize the best of Simmons’ skills on offense.

    Ben Simmons shoots with the wrong hand. He's right handed and he has perfect touch with his right hand which is apparent when he shoots that little hook/floater with his right.

    it woulb be interesting coach Nick to make a video about the Rivers-driven Celtics and examine if there are the same signs of subpar coaching there also

    You're right, this is equally the coaches fault. I mean, it's up to the coach to figure out how to use the pieces.

    Okay so I definitely don't want the Warriors to trade for him because there is no way Kerr is smart enough to figure out how to use him properly.

    I just cannot understand how the guy hitting less than 50% of his FT is being paid 30+ million bucks. I know Shaq or Wallace were also similarly bad, but they were either doing way more damage under the rim (shaq) or being paid less (Wallace). Try doing your work only in 50% of the cases correctly and you are fired the next day…

    I think the 76ers would benefit alot from having simmons screens away from the ball on the embiid isos and postups. It would make it a lot more difficult to help off of simmons if his man was busy trying to help contain curry or green coming off a screen.

    You have to wonder why he is lacking confidence in the first place, because Ben is not the only player who is experiencing this. Markelle Fultz, Andrew Wiggins, and Anthony Bennett are also players who lack confidence. All 4 of them happen to be 1 and done players. I got nothing against 1 and done players, but some players are clearly not ready for the NBA after 1 year in college. Markelle Fultz and Anthony Bennett definitely weren't. You can make a case that Ben Simmons wasn't either. Had Ben stayed longer in LSU he wouldn't be having these confidence issues.

    it's so fitting that the ROY race was between Mitchell and Simmons.
    Mitchell is quite literally the exact opposite of Simmons on paper and on the floor.
    What's starting to become evident to people is that the only trait Simmons beats Mitchell in is size and length.
    Watch these two side by side in the 4th quarter of a close game; Donovan ups his presence and fearlessness and NEVER wilts from the moment, while Ben shrinks into the background in every single game
    The media just has hard-ons for trip doubles and as a result care only about box scores and watch maybe five minutes for every 100 hours they miss.
    That being said, im happy they were too trip-doub obsessed, it's led many many people to learn what separates box scores from wins
