Hi Paul, Just recently discovered your channel & binge watched a couple of your projects. I love the format and the humour etc. I'm gonna looooove the Gilmour project! Don't forget about the little mod switch that brings the neck pick up in. I wish I had your luthier skills. Anyway, keep up the fantastic work you do. Cheers mate. This project has had a donation from a fantastic pickup maker/luthier from Canada. The fully loaded pick guard he sent over has his own take on the Gilmour mod.... More on that to come. Thanks for watching. Welcome to the family
Awesome job. Dave didn’t paint the guitar black. Back then in California Fender painted everything sunburst then painted some other colours to meet orders. The larger block repair at the bridge Dave did himself after he tried a Khaller Trem system and didn’t like it so cut and glued a block in. The Black Strat book by Phil Taylor his Tech is an amazing read.
I built a Gilmour Black Strat myself a couple of years ago. Didn't go from scratch but got a Mexican Fender body, Northwest Guitars neck and pick guard, Fender Fat 50s & CS69 neck and middle pickups and finally a Seymour Duncan custom shop SSL-1 DG pickup for the bridge (not really necessary as the SSL-5 is the same pickup, I just had them do a bit of tinkering to mine). All in all came in at around £650 which is a lot but it's a damn site cheaper than the Fender signature Gilmour guitar. For the price of it, which if I remember right was roughly £10, I'd recommend you go get a pick guard from Northwest Guitars as they do one that's 1 ply black and has the little hole for the mini toggle switch that Gilmour used to add the bridge pickup to positions 1 & 2 on the main switch. They also sell the little bracket that holds the mini toggle switch down at the correct depth for about 3 or 4 quid. Not affiliated or sponsored, just a couple of great products to get you closer to the Black Strat! Apart from that, going to be watching this build closely and checking out your other vids as this one made me laugh!
Cheers mate. That sounds like a great way to go. An amazing pickup maker has donated a loaded pickguard to the project on this occasion. It has his own version of the Gilmour mod on it. Those early 2000’s squiers were legit nice guitars. The only neck I’ve felt that’s been better than a 2005 Affinity strat was my dad’s partscaster with one of musikraft’s.
Great video. Love your presenting style and nice to know of another fellow luthier 20 miles down the road. I made my own relic gilmour black strat a few years ago. I went to the Christie show before the auction. I've got the black Strat book etc. But I still find it funny that actually the black Strat today is essentially 80% of the body of the original, the Kahler DON'T FORGET HE HAD A HUMBUCKER in it too before Animals. You're a very talented man and I'm pleased that you're doing it for charity too. I wish you well in the London Marathon. Just one thing; what's the piece of music played about seven minutes in, please?
I love the fact that Gilmour Sold the original guitar in auction for a huge amount and now plays 2 of the Fender Custom shop ones that he spec'd . I also recall feeling pretty chuffed with myself buying an Epiphone 335 in Guitar Guitar in around 2012 and as I went to pay this guys girlfriend next to my had just bought him the Cusom shop GIlmour guitar and it was on the counter next to me, I was totally deflated, I hope he bloody married that lass.
Gilmour is the man but I came across both Brian May and Mick Ronson first as a kid. I think May was probably what made me pester my parents to get me a guitar (ropey Kay-type acoustic). It actually makes a nice change to see a strat being built - a lot of builds seem to avoid them.
@@Milehousestudios I'd been playing 10yrs by Nirvana - love em to bits mind. The Wall is in my top 5 most played albums (along with Ziggy) - I was entranced by that and Dark Side from the off. Now look what you've done Richards....I'm thinking...on a Saturday...and not even being paid! 😃
I prefer the "small" headstock too. Never liked the bigger CBS ones. But it wouldn't be until my 12th birthday when I actually successfully persuaded my folks to buy me a guitar! I do also find it amusing that Jim Irsay, who bought The Black Strat, spent $3,975,000 on what is ostensibly "Trigger's Broom" Haha!
He used them all at some point. Lace pickups for a while. I think by the time it got sold it was some standard gear. Close enough is good enough for me on this one.
LMAO. I just finished modding a Squier Affinity Strat with a maple neck into a David Gilmour Strat ! I also installed a Fender pre-wired Tex-Mex black pickguard for a better sound. Most Fender parts can be used with Squier Affinity Strats.
Absolutely. It's a fun project that loads of folks have a go at... This project has had a phenomenally generous donation from a viewer regarding pickups... Stay tuned. 😉
Glmour's _first_ Black Strat with the fat headstock and rosewood board is the guitar I wish he still had. Very Hendrix-ey vibes from that axe, beautiful clean tone, from chimey, to throaty, to almost tele-like. Too bad it was stolen, never to surface again.
@savedaz Thanks, I wasn't aware that it could sound that close. I guess it comes down to it being single coil versus the standard double coil Les Paul sound, huh?
DIY guy here. The gear. I tried it all. From original to forged, from expensive to the cheap. Does so called "quality" gear sound better? Yes, but not in the way you would maybe think. For example the bridge. You don't need a voodoo original Fender bridge, but Gotoh 510 does the job really well, and costs a half. It's made of metals so hard, that ie. drilling a hole for piezo pickup is a challenge. And because of that it also: - keeps the tuning better, - alllows you to hear the f** difference when you touch the whammy bar, - sounds as long as it should. If you touch the bar on a cheap bridge, it just does not react so well and it dies very quick. Is the sound itself better or different? No. But you can have more fun with the sound you already had. Does the springs change the sound? No. It changes how the bridge reacts. More strings make it more stable when double stop bend. Tuners? Get the best, as you will use it a lot. Get a good bone or tusq nut and you are good to go.
Good tips... We have done developments in the next videos... The remit was build to a small budget originally but stay tuned, you're not far from the mark.
No. I'm aiming at the spec he used when his Strat went to auction. I think the EMG gear was in his red strat. They were passive. A very kind custom pickup winder has donated a beautiful period correct loaded pickguard for the project. There were so many configurations over the years, EMG, Lace, custom shop...You can almost take your pick.
Nah... It's a minger with the wrong colour fret board, skinny body and massive head stock 🤢 hold on for the rest of the series... It gets some interesting developments
Hi Paul! This is going to be a good one. That scratchplate is bothering me though, Gilmour's doesn't have the white line round the edge. I've got an old one-ply black scratchplate you can have if you want, I think it would look more accurate. If you message me your address I'd be happy to send it to you.
That's very kind of you and you're of course correct. A wonderful pickup builder has actually donated a hand wound, fully loaded pick guard for this project. It's a generous and expensive gift that I'll reveal in later videos. Thank you very much though. You're another shining example of the channel viewers.
Easiest way to do it at home is to slap a loaded pickguard on a black 50s style Stratocaster from the Fender-family (Squier Classic vibe, vintera, roadworn) and be done with it.
You dont have a least clue... so many things are wrong I don't now where to start.

Imagine...Someone might have that still. Even if they told you, you'd never believe them.
Love it, my guitar hero.
He HATES being called Dave BTW 😊
I'll have to address that 😂
@@Milehousestudios by calling him Dave even more, knowing you 😝😝😝
Brick in the wall was played on a Les Paul goal top with P90s ❤
Seriously? But it's got that classic Strat twang to it!
@@jethropebs P90 is a single coil so it sounds like a strat but fatter
Google it if you’re not sure ❤️
@savedaz Thanks, I wasn't aware that it could sound that close. I guess it comes down to it being single coil versus the standard double coil Les Paul sound, huh?
I might have to do that one then.... Just to agitate the masses 😂

And because of that it also:
- keeps the tuning better,
- alllows you to hear the f** difference when you touch the whammy bar,
- sounds as long as it should.
No EMG pickups?
Even more important than just "Looking" identicle to THE Black Strat , does it " SOUND " like it
Maybe, probably not when I play it 😂
Which version of his strat.
As close as I can visually to the record breaking guitar sold at auction.
Make me a Malmsteen Strat . 😊 ✨🎸✨🇺🇸
🤣 I scalloped a headstock many moons ago... I've got to say, it took forever and I'm in no hurry to do it again.

@@Milehousestudiosyou scalloped a HEADSTOCK? 🤔
I would like share the acoustic guitar case I am building. Is any way email you?
You can ping it over in a message on Instagram
“Let’s get stuck in cutting this bastard out shall we?” Haha just what Dan Erlewine would say 😂
Paul, where’s part two? Mon then 😉
Every Friday 3pm GMT boss
Isn't the donor guitar already a replica?
Nah... It's a minger with the wrong colour fret board, skinny body and massive head stock 🤢 hold on for the rest of the series... It gets some interesting developments
ooo relicing a new guitar, thats controversial. love as good beat up strat though have fun!
I love a bit of controversy. 🤣A beat up Strat just makes you want to pick it up...
@@Milehousestudios that's cool, thanks very much!
Why not do his new Black Cat Strat ?
Bit late now chick. Maybe next year...
Easiest way to do it at home is to slap a loaded pickguard on a black 50s style Stratocaster from the Fender-family (Squier Classic vibe, vintera, roadworn) and be done with it.
😂 I'd struggle to get a video series out of that...
Richards on the headstock please Paul!
As a preference to Milehouse studios?
@@Milehousestudios Defo for me Paul. Richards Custom Strat. I’ll have a bid on that one.
My pants remain un-sh*tted but I can't make a no-stain guarantee
