I have been to Williamsburg and Jamestown many times it's beautiful with so much history.Our Elementary School takes the 4th grade to Jamestown every year.
So thankful for the intelligent and hard-working archaeologists who help us to recover those parts of our heritage which we have lost! Great documentary!
My 6th great grandfather 😢Richard Tidwell came to Jamestown sometime around 1650 with two brothers. They settled in Cople VA and he passed away in 1692 as a fairly successful tobacco farmer. I always wonder if he knew any of the people that are tied to the artifacts found at Jamestown.
My 7th great grandfather, Robert Easley, came from England in 1675 and I often wonder the same thing you do. Captain William Byrd gave him a patent of 100 acres in the area where Richmond later developed in the spot which is now Shockoe Bottom. Later, he, Thomas Jefferson (the President’s grandfather who had arrived in Jamestown at the same time) and two other men were given more land by Capt. Byrd up the James River a bit around Fine Creek. The Jeffersons did their thing and my relatives kept migrating south and west through the 1800s - some stayed in SC where the town of Easley is named after Gen. Easley in the Civil war. Other brothers settled in TN and then Louisiana where I was born. 35 years ago I moved to Alexandria, VA and only found out about these ancestors and this Jamestown connection two years ago. I love everything about Richmond and visit there often. I feel as if I have circled back.
@@KaySellsVA Kay that’s awesome to learn. I’ve been watching the “Jamestown Discovery Channel”. It’s fascinating. I was an airline pilot until a few years ago. My crew members though “this captains weird”. While they were partying on overnights or laying on the beach on long layovers… I was visiting cemeteries and museums. I love Richmond and the Virginia area. My son went to Fork Union Military academy (started in then 1800’s) not far from Richmond. We spend a lot of time in that area. I love history. I hope heaven has videos of the actual events lol.

I’ve only been getting into genealogy in the last few years and it freaks me out when I think of all the times and places I’ve been drawn to in the Richmond area only to find out I have ancestors from here. Never had a clue or even a thought about it. In the late 1970s I lived in Richmond for 3 yrs. and the whole time I would be fascinated with the history and would spend so much time just driving around and looking. I didn’t know why but I always ended up on the west end of Richmond - now I know it was around that area where my original Easley ancestor settled! Knowing what I know now I go to Richmond often. May retire there. I’ve just discovered these Jamestown video channels and I also watch “Piedmont Trails” which is very good. As you found out when you were a pilot, once you get involved with this, it can almost take over your life!
@@KaySellsVA same here. I’ve always loved history. Felt deeply connected to it. My paternal grandparents were born Ira 1889 and Nora 1892. But had no idea family had come over in first 50 year of European immigrants. What even more amazing is it’s only 6th great grandfather that arrived in the Jamestown era. Seems almost impossible that so few generations have passed in that time.
I remember in the mid 80s, I went to Jamestown. The story then was that the River had washed away the original fort. Later I came back after the above work at been done, and it was AMAZING what they had discovered and unearthed !! If you have not gone to Jamestown to see the artifacts and the outline of the Fort, it is WELL worth your visit !

Recent studies have strongly indicated that the Roanoke colony was not destroyed by but assimilated into the native culture, in order to survive. There are people living in North Carolina who are genetic descendants of some of the Roanoke colonists. One group even retained the family name, Brown. They are related to the descendants of family members who stayed in England. Proof that some of the Roanoke colonists did survive, but gave up being English in order to survive.

The Lumbee Indians of Robeson County, North Carolina are the descendants of "The Lost Colony of Roanoke". They still speak with a 400 yr. old English High Shipman accent!! They weren't lost at all, but intermingled with non-violent natives!

My Father’s ancestor come here in 1636 , most of my dads family still live in N.C. My Grandparents moved out to Nebraska at the turn of the century early 1900’s . He was a wheat farmer.
My Ancestor, Stephen Hopkins, came to Jamestown on a supply ship in 1609. The ship wrecked on Bermuda and had to be rebuilt. Then to Jamestown where he stayed from 1610 -1614. Went back to England because his wife had died and he had 3 children to care for. In 1620 took his family plus his new wife on the Mayflower to the New World.
Larry Stallings My step mother Ellen was a Stallings as well she was into genealogy I’m not sure if she could trace to James Town, my own family the Hathaway’s settled around Freetown MA c1640. Have fun researching the family trees.
JR102c was identified as Lieutenant George Harrison who was reported as dying from a gunshot to the leg. He was murdered by a merchant named Richard Stevens in 1624 during a duel.

We recently did a ancestry tree, it’s so interesting.. I have ancestors that came here from England in the 1700’s and Ireland in the 1800’s.. each generation they moved west.. one was born in the end of the revolutionary war in Philadelphia then every branch after him the go further and further west.. truly amazing tbh
Indeed an outstanding video about the Jamestown colony !! My question is to Dr. Kelso, do you employ the use of metal detectors to find the metal objects that are beneath the surface at Jamestown ? I realize that there has always been friction between archaeologist's and metal detector users but I do feel that one compliments the other ! Please keep up your great work at Jamestown !
Having shot there for 15 years, I can tell you that to my knowledge, metal detectors have never been used. Objects are found by painstakingly removing the soil bit by bit. Many things are found at different layers that are not metal, and sometimes more valuable in knowledge than metal objects. The outline of the fort which proved it had not all been covered by the James River, was discovered by post holes. Post holes are where the soil is stained by the decaying of the wood. Truly one of the most valuable discoveries at Jamestown.

Went to Jamestown a couple of years ago - absolutely fascinating. Loved every minute. Really felt the connection with home in the UK - it was quite moving understanding their hardship...
piggyduff I've been going my whole life.We don't live to far away and this is an excellent place to begin exploring followed by Colonial Williamsburg and then Yorktown to complete the tour.All three are called the historic triangle in this area.Keep going and see Richmond to begin the Civil War tour.!!!
My grandfather x9 Edward Ellis came to Jamestown in the early 1600's from Wales on a ship owned by Richard Carrill as an indentured servant. He made it through the tough times and ended up a land owner who passed his property down to his son Jeremiah Ellis who ended up owning a big portion of land and the Under Sheriff there. I'm almost certain he was a tobacco farmer. They were buried in the Jones/Ellis cemetery in Surrey county.
there were scots in the south since the late 1500s. the same with the english. then in 1607 the first 3 ships of the main english settlers arrived in 1607 and settled in jamestown, named after a scottish king. then more scots arrived probably welsh also. then the later ulster scots in the 1700s. many of these ulster scots families would still have been full scots having lived in ulster only a few years before migrating to america.

At the time of the production of "A World Uncovered", the BBC was not even remotely interested in the Jamestown project. That interest came approximately in the early to middle 2000's. The first square opened at Jamestown during this archeological investigation began in 1994.
Time Team did come over to help locate the fort. They would know about the architecture of the time. They did an episode of it. Stuart was quite helpful.
We lived in southern VA for 3 years. My kids attended elementary and middle school there. The history they learned was primarily VA history and field trips consisted of going to Jamestown. There’s so much history there it’s understandable why VA history was the focus. If you haven’t been to Jamestown, Hampton Roads, Shirley Plantation, Richmond and so much more, I encourage you to do so💫
Jamestown's story is very thought provoking, but how can it be the birthplace of the USA, our oldest settlement, if the southern coast had been settled 40 years earlier by Spain?
Typical that scholars often label folks in the past as incompetent. They may not have the benefit of hindsight like we do, but they were no dummies. Who knows, someday the astronauts will be labeled as incompetent.
Fantastic video about Jamestown and the original settlers. Many in my family live just across the river from there. Things were a lot different when I was young we could use that area freely to swim and picnic. Williamsburg streets were open to traffic. I don't remember any fee to get into the areas. I believe there was a fee to go in the courthouse, perhaps which we didn't do because we were poor then. I miss that time. It was a lot simpler and more fun. C'est la vie.
every school kid in Virginia took a class trip to Jamestown . i did in the 5th grade . it's good to see something factual about it on the internet these days ,most stories on the internet are half true.

An ancestor of mine, John Slaughter arrived in Jamestown in 1617 with his brother. John was an indentured servents until his debts were paid. John's brother was murdered by the Indians in the massacre of 1622.

Disappointed there was no reference to the British Time Team contribution? I believe the geophysics experience in particular was key to identifying the layout of the fort before excavation began?
My ancestors created Midland NJ and was adopted by Indians but they bought all the land and they never had any raid by any of the native Americans and grandma lived until she was 102 years and bore around 20 children and I even have a coin with her and her adopted father on one side and I forgot the other side and the land they bought her adopted family had continued to live there too check out Penelope &Richard Stout!
If the trip across the Atlantic took four months, how were they able to store and transport enough provisions for so many people for such a long voyage?
23 years prior settlers landed on Roanoke Island North Carolina and the first English American baby Virginia Dade was born. Why do they keep evading that truth. That is the true original first landing of American Colonistist. Computer Genealogist Scientest have already ID'ed a Brown family in that area as Croatoan Island native and English decent. Virginia Dade lives on and they will have to rewrite what they chose blinders for.

Saint Augustine, Florida was founded in 1565, predating Jamestown and Port Royal by several decades. Thus it holds the distinction of being the first permanent European settlement in North America.

Placentia, NL Canada was settled by the French in the 1500's. They moved to Port Royal after the Treaty of Utrecht and the English moved in to Placentia.
I do not know about that. The Spanish had older ones. They had one in San Antonio about the same time of Port Royal. Spanish settlements in this hemisphere go back quite a ways.

Its odd how not much was said, even as a student myself years ago, or in my grand children's classes now, that there were established Spanish settlements in North America long before the English.
I think the point is that the English/Brits were the egg from which the USA hatched, not Spain. If you all spoke Spanish and had won your independence and become a country by defeating Spain, then sure - those earlier settlements would be more significant than Jamestown etc..
Well, actually Jamestown was not the first English town in America. . . It was Roanoak Island, which was established 12 years earlier in 1587, but whose inhabitants mysteriously disappeared several years later, never to be seen again, although theories abound.
The "name" Indians comes from Christopher Columbus because he believed until the day he died that he had found a route to India. Columbus is now recognized for the genocide of the Arawak tribe and the native people of the Caribbean. Cinebar worked with Roger Mudd over the years on a number of projects. He always insisted that the scripts be completely historically accurate. He was a brilliant man and a kind man, so wonderful to work with. He died in 2021 at 93.

Well Virginia is a pretty safe place with a few city streets. You are safe to come to Jamestown \ Williamsburg area!! Very tame and picturesque ! Your post made me smile because last time we visited this year we saw lots of wildlife as well as historic areas.
Good video, but the music was awful. Its a shame that the archeoligists, and their search for authenticity of what happened at Jamestown, the film director decided to use fake swash buckling heroic music, as a filler, even though so much correct period music is available.
Sandra Prestedge they probably have this was filmed in 1997 DNA was still in its infancy if you were to check with them they might be able to tell you if they have done so.
Jamestown is a fascinating place for archaeologists .Especially for the Americans and British . My ancestors landed in Virginia in the mid 1600s . One of them actually spent alot of time in court engaged in lawsuits between 1690 and 1711 ( time of his death ) . The currency being used of course - pounds and ,shillings
My 9th great grandfather was William west,born 1610 in Somerset in England and died in the second Jamestown massacre in 1644,other than that I don’t know much else about him,is there a cemetery there?
My grandfather Thomas was in bacon's rebellion and got banished to Barbados for seven years. Bacon's rebellion was a about settlers being attacked by Indians and the govern do nothing about it ,which is why it was mentioned in the declaration of independence.
Not sure what you mean?? Some of the people were from wealthy families. These men traded for items with original peoples. The land happened to be empty when they arrived, which they mistakenly thought the land was abandoned. The European s didn't understand the way original inhabits moved for hunting and fishing.

I have been to Williamsburg and Jamestown many times it's beautiful with so much history.Our Elementary School takes the 4th grade to Jamestown every year.
I hope they continue to do so. Very valuble information.

My 6th great grandfather 😢Richard Tidwell came to Jamestown sometime around 1650 with two brothers. They settled in Cople VA and he passed away in 1692 as a fairly successful tobacco farmer.
I always wonder if he knew any of the people that are tied to the artifacts found at Jamestown.
My 7th great grandfather, Robert Easley, came from England in 1675 and I often wonder the same thing you do. Captain William Byrd gave him a patent of 100 acres in the area where Richmond later developed in the spot which is now Shockoe Bottom. Later, he, Thomas Jefferson (the President’s grandfather who had arrived in Jamestown at the same time) and two other men were given more land by Capt. Byrd up the James River a bit around Fine Creek. The Jeffersons did their thing and my relatives kept migrating south and west through the 1800s - some stayed in SC where the town of Easley is named after Gen. Easley in the Civil war. Other brothers settled in TN and then Louisiana where I was born. 35 years ago I moved to Alexandria, VA and only found out about these ancestors and this Jamestown connection two years ago. I love everything about Richmond and visit there often. I feel as if I have circled back.

I was an airline pilot until a few years ago. My crew members though “this captains weird”. While they were partying on overnights or laying on the beach on long layovers… I was visiting cemeteries and museums. I love Richmond and the Virginia area. My son went to Fork Union Military academy (started in then 1800’s) not far from Richmond. We spend a lot of time in that area.

I’ve only been getting into genealogy in the last few years and it freaks me out when I think of all the times and places I’ve been drawn to in the Richmond area only to find out I have ancestors from here. Never had a clue or even a thought about it. In the late 1970s I lived in Richmond for 3 yrs. and the whole time I would be fascinated with the history and would spend so much time just driving around and looking. I didn’t know why but I always ended up on the west end of Richmond - now I know it was around that area where my original Easley ancestor settled! Knowing what I know now I go to Richmond often. May retire there. I’ve just discovered these Jamestown video channels and I also watch “Piedmont Trails” which is very good. As you found out when you were a pilot, once you get involved with this, it can almost take over your life!
@@KaySellsVA same here. I’ve always loved history. Felt deeply connected to it. My paternal grandparents were born Ira 1889 and Nora 1892. But had no idea family had come over in first 50 year of European immigrants. What even more amazing is it’s only 6th great grandfather that arrived in the Jamestown era. Seems almost impossible that so few generations have passed in that time.

I remember in the mid 80s, I went to Jamestown. The story then was that the River had washed away the original fort. Later I came back after the above work at been done, and it was AMAZING what they had discovered and unearthed !! If you have not gone to Jamestown to see the artifacts and the outline of the Fort, it is WELL worth your visit !

Recent studies have strongly indicated that the Roanoke colony was not destroyed by but assimilated into the native culture, in order to survive.
There are people living in North Carolina who are genetic descendants of some of the Roanoke colonists. One group even retained the family name, Brown.
They are related to the descendants of family members who stayed in England. Proof that some of the Roanoke colonists did survive, but gave up being English in order to survive.

My ancestor Francis Holland came to Jamestown on the ship Supply in 1621 and later they founded the town of Holland Va.

My Father’s ancestor come here in 1636 , most of my dads family still live in N.C. My Grandparents moved out to Nebraska at the turn of the century early 1900’s . He was a wheat farmer.
My Ancestor, Stephen Hopkins, came to Jamestown on a supply ship in 1609. The ship wrecked on Bermuda and had to be rebuilt. Then to Jamestown where he stayed from 1610 -1614. Went back to England because his wife had died and he had 3 children to care for. In 1620 took his family plus his new wife on the Mayflower to the New World.

My 12th Great Grandfather Captain Thomas Graves came to Jamestown in 1608 with John Symths group. He was a very important figure.
JR102c was identified as Lieutenant George Harrison who was reported as dying from a gunshot to the leg. He was murdered by a merchant named Richard Stevens in 1624 during a duel.

We recently did a ancestry tree, it’s so interesting.. I have ancestors that came here from England in the 1700’s and Ireland in the 1800’s.. each generation they moved west.. one was born in the end of the revolutionary war in Philadelphia then every branch after him the go further and further west.. truly amazing tbh

Indeed an outstanding video about the Jamestown colony !! My question is to Dr. Kelso, do you employ the use of metal detectors to find the metal objects that are beneath the surface at Jamestown ? I realize that there has always been friction between archaeologist's and metal detector users but I do feel that one compliments the other ! Please keep up your great work at Jamestown !
Having shot there for 15 years, I can tell you that to my knowledge, metal detectors have never been used. Objects are found by painstakingly removing the soil bit by bit. Many things are found at different layers that are not metal, and sometimes more valuable in knowledge than metal objects. The outline of the fort which proved it had not all been covered by the James River, was discovered by post holes. Post holes are where the soil is stained by the decaying of the wood. Truly one of the most valuable discoveries at Jamestown.

piggyduff I've been going my whole life.We don't live to far away and this is an excellent place to begin exploring followed by Colonial Williamsburg and then Yorktown to complete the tour.All three are called the historic triangle in this area.Keep going and see Richmond to begin the Civil War tour.!!!

My grandfather x9 Edward Ellis came to Jamestown in the early 1600's from Wales on a ship owned by Richard Carrill as an indentured servant. He made it through the tough times and ended up a land owner who passed his property down to his son Jeremiah Ellis who ended up owning a big portion of land and the Under Sheriff there. I'm almost certain he was a tobacco farmer. They were buried in the Jones/Ellis cemetery in Surrey county.
there were scots in the south since the late 1500s. the same with the english. then in 1607 the first 3 ships of the main english settlers arrived in 1607 and settled in jamestown, named after a scottish king. then more scots arrived probably welsh also. then the later ulster scots in the 1700s. many of these ulster scots families would still have been full scots having lived in ulster only a few years before migrating to america.
@@brucecollins4729 That's good information. I found out my grandfather Edward Ellis was born in 1605 and he came to Virginia on a ship owned by Benjamin Carrill 1636 as an indentured slave. He did his slave time and received his 100 acres then went on to acquire more land which he passed on to Jeremiah Ellis and on and on.

At the time of the production of "A World Uncovered", the BBC was not even remotely interested in the Jamestown project. That interest came approximately in the early to middle 2000's. The first square opened at Jamestown during this archeological investigation began in 1994.
Time Team did come over to help locate the fort. They would know about the architecture of the time. They did an episode of it. Stuart was quite helpful.

We lived in southern VA for 3 years. My kids attended elementary and middle school there. The history they learned was primarily VA history and field trips consisted of going to Jamestown. There’s so much history there it’s understandable why VA history was the focus. If you haven’t been to Jamestown, Hampton Roads, Shirley Plantation, Richmond and so much more, I encourage you to do so💫

Jamestown's story is very thought provoking, but how can it be the birthplace of the USA, our oldest settlement, if the southern coast had been settled 40 years earlier by Spain?

Fantastic video about Jamestown and the original settlers. Many in my family live just across the river from there. Things were a lot different when I was young we could use that area freely to swim and picnic. Williamsburg streets were open to traffic. I don't remember any fee to get into the areas. I believe there was a fee to go in the courthouse, perhaps which we didn't do because we were poor then. I miss that time. It was a lot simpler and more fun. C'est la vie.

An ancestor of mine, John Slaughter arrived in Jamestown in 1617 with his brother. John was an indentured servents until his debts were paid. John's brother was murdered by the Indians in the massacre of 1622.

Disappointed there was no reference to the British Time Team contribution? I believe the geophysics experience in particular was key to identifying the layout of the fort before excavation began?

My ancestors created Midland NJ and was adopted by Indians but they bought all the land and they never had any raid by any of the native Americans and grandma lived until she was 102 years and bore around 20 children and I even have a coin with her and her adopted father on one side and I forgot the other side and the land they bought her adopted family had continued to live there too check out Penelope &Richard Stout!

23 years prior settlers landed on Roanoke Island North Carolina and the first English American baby Virginia Dade was born.

Its odd how not much was said, even as a student myself years ago, or in my grand children's classes now, that there were established Spanish settlements in North America long before the English.
I think the point is that the English/Brits were the egg from which the USA hatched, not Spain. If you all spoke Spanish and had won your independence and become a country by defeating Spain, then sure - those earlier settlements would be more significant than Jamestown etc..

Well, actually Jamestown was not the first English town in America. . . It was Roanoak Island, which was established 12 years earlier in 1587, but whose inhabitants mysteriously disappeared several years later, never to be seen again, although theories abound.
Roanoke is mentioned early on in the script/narration. As an aside, Cinebar has been documenting the archaeology of Roanoke as well.

Who chose the use of the name “Indians”? Where has Roger Mudd been for years? I expect more.
The "name" Indians comes from Christopher Columbus because he believed until the day he died that he had found a route to India. Columbus is now recognized for the genocide of the Arawak tribe and the native people of the Caribbean. Cinebar worked with Roger Mudd over the years on a number of projects. He always insisted that the scripts be completely historically accurate. He was a brilliant man and a kind man, so wonderful to work with. He died in 2021 at 93.

My 9th great grandfather was William west,born 1610 in Somerset in England and died in the second Jamestown massacre in 1644,other than that I don’t know much else about him,is there a cemetery there?

My grandfather Thomas was in bacon's rebellion and got banished to Barbados for seven years. Bacon's rebellion was a about settlers being attacked by Indians and the govern do nothing about it ,which is why it was mentioned in the declaration of independence.

Not sure what you mean?? Some of the people were from wealthy families. These men traded for items with original peoples. The land happened to be empty when they arrived, which they mistakenly thought the land was abandoned. The European s didn't understand the way original inhabits moved for hunting and fishing.
