This was the Bestway Tritech Queen Air Mattress. Got it at WalMart for $45. There is nothing special about it - any air mattress with that sort of grippy flocking on one side should work. A couple points I thought to include after shooting the video: - The mattress does take up a lot of space. Thankfully, it deflates for storage. - This mattress smells fairly potently like plastic. If you left yours outdoors for a few hours it should take care of the odor. - The pics in the video were taken on auto mode with zero eye for aesthetics and therefore they look bad. Yours may look better. - I want to be clear that my neck and back are extremely sensitive. I don't want it to seem like vertical flat-laying was what was causing me to be in pain. This sort of setup will be far more forgiving on your body than a flat-lay on the ground.
Great idea ! I use two 5 ft folding tables side by side and only put the legs up on one side. That way, it’s a slanted table. I cover it with a white backdrop that is good gripping material. When people come over, I can quickly put legs up to make them into a typical table setting. Wish RUclips would let me post a photo
@@Xeyxey0 yes ! And if you have those folding table that go up to bar height , you can adjust accordingly. I thought doing this would break the tables or cause issues with the legs , but I’ve had no problems with them. My set up is on carpet to prevent the tables from sliding. My feet fit under to get a closer angle , also. Works perfect
Matt only you would think of this. Great idea start, on to version 2.0. Love it. I went with the Home Depot Styrofoam and covered it with fabric. Light weight, easy to move if needed. I struggle for permanent space or I would attach it to the wall.
Walmart has scrap pieces of blanket type cloth in rolls - I found a gray flannel for 4 bucks & hung it over a door in the hallway, added a wreath hanger and shut the door. Bright white LED ceiling light and a wide hanger, and I'm faster with this than the other room, & I think the white- walled (& closed in) hallway helped with the lighting.
It only needs to be a slight angle like an 80-85 degree angle. Also lay your item closer to your eyeline looking forward not down at it. Way better for your neck and back. I think this mattress idea is genius multipurpose. I use a white foamcore art board from any art supply store for under 20 bucks you can easily hang a hanger on it and place on some stacked bins to get it up to your eyeline and have massive room for your feet if you want to try that.
Matt, I injured my back and shoulder in a car accident about 7 years ago and I suffer from chronic shoulder pain. Vertical flat lay has been a life-saver but it absolutely has to be more vertical. 45 degrees really isnt vertical enough. I keep mine at around 70-75 degree tilt. Photography is a painless breeze with the right set up!
I just moved into my new 600 sqft apartment last week and I was lamenting having to resort back to my drafting table and peg board setup. And I have been sleeping on a full sized air mattress I got at an estate sale for $5 until I get my new bed. Guess what I am going to start using!
I made one of these, but I went SUPER cheap. I got a thrifted fleece blanket, and I duct taped several foam core boards together. It worked well for a while. I used some random wire rack shelf pieces and binder clipped them on. I eventually replaced the fabric with the sherpa one from Joann's.
I see it's just the velvety type of fabric that the clothing clings to......all I will need is a long and wide piece of plywood or heavy duty corrugated cardboard (or similar) to affix the fabric to. Then lay the clothing out on top of it. This is genius! Thank you for sharing!
Great idea! I'm currently building an adjustable drafting table style setup so I can have it at an angle for clothing but then flat for other items like shoes and hats. I think it's going to be awesome but a lot more work than a mattress!
Brilliant idea, LOVE it!!! ALWAYS looking for ways to improve photos, and that diagonal surface YES !!! However I have no intention to build a permanent one. Also can double as a guest bed if needed, which I also do not have, nor really want to invest in. GREAT idea!!!
For Long Term Use Just Invest In a Good Digital Camera that has a tethering port so you can connect it to your Mac or PC and then download a software for Mac or PC that will control the Zoom features on the camera so you do not have to manually move the camera to to take close up on tags and flaws etc.. All Can be controlled with a Mouse while standing up straight or sitting down. The Only Labor part is putting the clothes onto the platform and turning the item over (best part is you are not limited to vertical flay lay it can be completely flat horizontal and the camera stationary). Now This is an Investment not for hobby people If you do this as a business FULL time then save up and shell out the cost for the set up (rough guess $ about 500$ to 800$ This includes the gear set up as well i.e Lights material tools etc etc...) hope this helps because it helped me and I dont have back and shoulder pains anymore (Remember Every little bend, dip and or twist you do while taking photos compounds when it is about a few 50 to 100 pieces of clothing everyday then multiple by 30 days and you will end up in a wheel chair very soon). That is my 2 cents take it for what it is and you do you good luck!
LOL, you're hilarious. I bought a huge stiff poster board from Office Depot for like $12 and some scrap material from Wallymart, boom, best thing I've ever done for my back!
Leave it to you Matt to find a no nonsense solution for people. I hope that you will find a solution with your back and neck problems. I feel your pain. And honestly even people who don't have back and neck pain yet should take potential future back and neck pain into consideration.
I use an adjustable drafting table. Hubby attached a piece of plywood that we covered with felt material. I use a gray background but can easily change to white/black. I can adjust adjust the table depending on what I am photographing. I can choose to sit in a chair or stand. No more back/neck strain.
Matt, The angle is not right. I got a piece of plywood and the white felt, and I put one of those over the door hooks at the top, so that I can hang my hangers on it. And right behind me, as I face the board, is my ironing board, that I use as a table to take measurements on, fold and bag the clothes. I like it because it's adjustable in height and good for my back.
Is a simple piece of cardboard covered with felt an option? Something you can custom tilt as needed? Easy storage behind a door when not in use. Just a thought.
I switched to the vertical flat lay a few weeks ago (with plenty of room to stick my feet under)but it did not help my back, actually it made it worse, i think that what kills me is the stretching forward of the arms at shoulder level. Did you adjust to it or what is the alternative for taking pics for you now? thanks, Matt:)
Hi! Thank you for all do for the community, I have learned a lot from you. Also, have you tried acupuncture? Might help your back and neck. Usually needs a few sessions to really help but I truly recommend. In my city there are community places that make it cheap. Also schools for it offers professionals assisting students with clients, making it affordable as well. Hope that your pain becomes more manageable.
Get a free pallet from the back of Home Depot or grocery store and put it on a couple of cinderblocks $2.99 each about 12 inches from the wall and lean it against the wall. The wood is rough enough for fabric to stick or you can add burlap to give it a rustic aesthetic or any other nappy fabric depending on the item. You can get burlap in the fabric section of Walmart for $4.99. The pallets are about 48" tall and the cinderblocks 18" which makes the top of the pallet 5 1/2 feet from the floor. This is a great height for me because it doesn't require me to reach high or bend low.
what could help with your back is to make a frame and foldable legs using pvc pipe ( dont glue the joints that you need to be able to move and home depot or lowes will cut the pipe to whatever dimension you need ). the front legs should be right below waist length and the back legs maybe a foot or so longer depending on how angled you want it to be, then you can duct tape the frame to the mattress. my set up uses a tarp but im thinking maybe ill switch to styrofoam boards after reading these comments.
Dude! I was just thinking about searching for a yard of velvet material to replace my slippery backdrop and then i saw your idea! lol ive got a few in my closet. Thanks man. Enya rocks ass!
Thanks Matt I got 3 of those blow up beds in storage..Im about to dust one off and get to work!! Now I just need some new lighting .The lighting I have now is A$$... 🤣
I always wear a back brace when I take photos ( have a vertical flat lay) Do gou regularly go in for adjustments? I always feel afterwards it provides temporary flexibility on my neck before it goes back to being stiff But the temporary feeling of goodness after an adjustment is worth it
Genius.. i m masterminding a foldable, light one.. so my place does not look like GW itself😂 with less inventory of course😂😂😂😂 tk u for the all the videos
I also have had bad back and neck pain for more than 30 years. I avoid flat lay for this reason but this seems like it might work well. I actually have a self-blow-up mattress if I can get it back from my daughter. Thanks for everyone who commented on the 70-75 and 80-85 degree angles. This is an awesome idea.
Pretty cool. Hey can you use ebay's or just an app to white out the background? I have tried it (not ebay's but apps) and it didn't work that great for me - but I do hear other you tubers raving about them :-).
A photo editor, of course, remove the lines from the mattress, except when the fabric is very light weight and would sink into the contours. Brilliant! It is very tempting except I want to dump clothing on someone else.
So funny because my boyfriend said i was crazy cause i just did the same thing yesterday but i got a twin and i wish id got a queen or full. But now i was able to prove to him i wasnt the only one with the idea
So he got up on his dainty little toesies, and he huffed and he puffed and he blew the mattress up! I remember seeing your toes in a previous video, and I would not use the adjective "dainty" to describe them. Sorry the big, bad wolf method isn't working out for you.

It took me most of the way through the video to realize you were talking about the strain of bending over taking photos. Yep...
Genius Matt! Hope it works out for you without any physical discomfort. Cheers. Oh, I forgot aboout your live Saturday auction... did you have better turnout during that timeslot? Fingers crossed for continued success for you young lad. :P

I repurposed a lot of around the house stuff and that's fine for now
