Windermere (often referred to as Lake Windermere to avoid confusion with the nearby town of Windermere) is a ribbon lake located in Cumbria, England, within the Lake District. It is the largest lake in England by length, area, and volume, though it is significantly smaller than the largest lochs in Scotland and loughs in Northern Ireland.
The lake spans approximately 11 miles (18 km) in length, reaches up to 1 mile (1.6 km) in width, has a maximum depth of 64 meters (210 feet), and sits at an elevation of 39 meters (128 feet) above sea level. The River Leven flows out of the lake, emptying into Morecambe Bay. Administratively, Windermere is part of Westmorland and Furness and historically belongs to the county of Westmorland, with the lake forming part of the historical boundary between Westmorland and Lancashire. Since the Kendal and Windermere Railway branch line opened in 1847, it has been a popular destination for holidays and summer homes. The Freshwater Biological Association, founded on Windermere's shore in 1929, conducted much of the early research on lake ecology, freshwater biology, and limnology.
