Hello! Does this work with the Administrativ password too? Im a full Windows user but have to reset the Administrativ password.. Best would be I don't have to ''reset'' the whole MAC.

I was able to acquire a used, late 2013 27" iMac from my employer for basically no cost! It had just been sitting in a vacant office collecting dust for well over a year. After all the supervisors and HR signed off on my request, it was mine. It had a password on it that no one could remember. This method worked PERFECTLY! Thank you Snazzy Labs! question, I have an old mac sent to me by a company about three years ago for a contract never consumated, they did not send me information on where to send it back to them or any requestest for its return. the thing is I just found it laying on a shell on my garage so I decided to open it up. since I consider it abandoned property and it has a couple of users for which I do not have the passwords, I then tried to do a recovery to load a new OS and it is asking for a recovery key.... how can I bypass the recovery key or this just a metal paper weight? I would like t use it for some personal training and if so then I will throw it to the garbage....... anywho. thanks for your help

I eventually had to factory restore the Mac. Was horrible but still had to do it. The Macintosh HD does not appear because it's also locked. I don't think that there is a way to access.

The Macintosh HD found in the volume section is empty of my end therefore I cannot do anything on that page. Checked my firmware password it says it's "OFF".

Help! When i type resetpassword in the terminal, a box shows up to reset via apple id which is not working - it’s just saying ‘supplied iCloud account was unable to unlock this volume’
When ever I do this (Exactly to the T) it always shows up with an Apple ID instead of the screen you showed, sadly I don’t remember what the Apple ID is. How do you get around that

Using a mac mini here on os X. When booting im using a pc keyboard. If i hold alt upon start up i get the mini hd hard drive image. Thats all. If i click that one it takes me back to the normal user name and passcode! Any tips?

A firmware password does prevent this trick from working (although the majority of Macs don't have one). If you also forget your firmware password however, you'd better know how to swap hard drives.
dumb question but at 1:59 he said to restart the device but it showed him holding his mouse on the shut down button. so which one do i click for that??
I need to boot off of an external backup that I have but I need to also reset the password because it is a cloned hard drive from a previous macOS install and while I can boot from it, I don’t remember my password it’s not an Apple ID it’s just a local four digit password so how would I reset that using the terminal? This terminal reset only applies to the internal hard drive not any external Buddha bowls. Thank you :-)
When i attempt to enter recovery , it requests a password. Probably admin, firmware or apple id pass. What do i do if i don't have those? I dont actually need the information on the laptop its an old one given to me in exchange for some work I did. Used to be a laptop for a school i think but i cant be certain.

What if i follow all these steps and get to the part where i need to click on the macintosh hd drive.. and its not there for me to reset the password?? Please help
i tried it and it asked for my apple ID and i did and it sent me a 6 digit code. i input it and it porccessed and it said its unable to change the password. why is that? and yes this is my parents account im trying to get into. is it because i need THEIR apple ID and password and not mine?

Still will not work. Either way it just take you back to the home screen. I think this information is outdated.

Interesting... but there's another way to do this... Restart (or yes shutdown and then start up) your Mac and then instead of Command-R you can also do Command-S which will bring you into Single User Mode.. You'll see a lot of scrolling text. Don't worry... that's normal. Once the text stops scrolling type: mount -uw / and finally to change your password type passwd [usernamewithforgottenpassword], obviously filling in the username in question, and then hit enter. It'll ask for a new password. Enter it twice as how Quinn just did hitting enter after each time, and then type exit and your normal OS X log in screen should appear, awaiting your new password.
This method is handy if you for some reason can't get into the recovery mode on some Macs. It's good as a fail-safe. :)

by chance do you know how to reset a 2007 imac A1224 with forgotten admin pw on a windows keyboard? Ive tried windows+r and ctrl+r on start up and get nothing. Apple tech support helped me and were trying to get to any diagnostic screen the only thing we got to was the macintosh HD with globe when holding alt. They had me enter a few wrong pw to see if it had a forgotten or way to recover pw and never came up with anything but incorrect username or pw. Thanks Os 10.4.10

how to do this on VMWare Workstation 14? I can not get CMD-R to input when booting
old mac allowed me to change to new password but i cannot use the computer messages agent wants the login keychain which of course i do not have, so it just stays on the screen and i can't get even to Safari or any of my tasks??? so now what, do you know? all I have is a home screen that is stuck at keychain request.

I have something in mind. Do try this at your own risk. I won't be responsible for anything that might happen, whether the situation becomes worse or just the opposite.
NOTE: I haven't tried this before so it's basically just a theory waiting to be proved (or corrected).
Connect to your local wi-fi connection, Download "Find my iPhone" in any iDevice available (though, I do recommend the one with the newer iOS), then after logging in with your Apple ID (it needs to be the same Apple ID you used in your macbook). You need to let the app locate the macbook (after you connect the mac to the internet), if it shows up in the list of iDevices, tap on it and press lock, so, now you will enter a passcode (4-digit) or a password that you know too well to forget. Make sure the macbook was turned on and connected while doing this. After finishing all this, you need to restart your macbook and then you're done. All you have to do now is to boot and unlock it.
Connect your macbook to your local wi-fi connection*

I also have another issue. I launched my computer from an external HD and now this new system sees my imac HD as an external Hard drive but i can not then access my files, saying that i do not have permission for that.
How can i save my imac files? Apple advised me to change the Read/Write permission on Info window of the files but it did not work (still no permission to do that)...Thanks for your help.

I’ve done this and the machine doesn’t go into recovery mode. When I turn the power on the system chime is almost instant. I’ve done this about a dozen times and it still just goes directly to login screen. Any idea why this would happen?
