Larry. He could do everything Magic could do PLUS make shots all the way out to the 3pt line (or farther)

This is a trick question. If you know enough about basketball to judge the differences between Magic and Bird you would answer, like Michael Jordan did when they asked him about LeBron, that "there are no great players. There are great teams." Showtime had a 2 - 1 record against the Celtics but the greatest Celtics team never got a chance to face them. Hakeem and the Rockets beat them in the Western finals. Would I rather have McHale and Parish or Worthy and Kareem? I think it's closer than people realize. Parish and McHale were TOUGH enforcers who held their own against the Detroit Bad Boys. They also had genuine talent. The Celtics hoped that by adding Walton they'd get the edge, and in the end they did. They had the extra size against Hakeem and Ralph Sampson.

Bird and Magic, you couldn't have scripted it any better. They were both great, Magic had the better team (except in 86') Larry was, in the words of Magic:"The Greatest Player ever". Larry was not only the best shooter, he passed like Magic, rebounded like Wilt, stole like Stockton, was 3X all-defensive team, won MVP back to back to back and was King of the 40/50/90 Club. LEGEND🏀

Ask the players who were there and everyone of them say Larry was the best and the one they loved to play with and hated to play against. 😊

86 was the year Boston was not going to be denied. Walton and Bird, on the court, at the same time, was the biggest cheat code I have seen, period. Then you had the rest of the first rate Celtic starters, and Wedman, Sichting, and Walton coming off the bench. They could out break the Lakers and out play everybody in half court setups, and passing, and post play. Best team play, and, at times, individual play, basketball, I have ever seen, to this day. More entertaining than the Globe Trotters, but still serious as a heart attack. I could keep on, but that is enough, today. I do miss it, badly.

The interesting thing I noticed about the 1986 season is that young Hakeem Olajuwon beat the Showtime Lakers at their absolute peak and took the 86 Celtics to 6 games in the finals. And yet he wouldn't get a ring for another 8 years.

To answer who the better player is one should look at skills and not just ring counts. Rings are part of the measurement but not THE measurement. Bird went to a 29 win team and with 1 player change to the roster (ML Carr) and a new coach Bill Fitch, Bird was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround and the biggest single season turnaround in NBA history. Bird won ROY by a huge margin over Magic and was 4th in the MVP vote. For the next 8 seasons in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1, 3 and 2nd again. Magic in the MVP for the same 9 years was = not on the list, 11, 8, 3,3,2,3, 1, and 3rd again. Bird finished higher for 8 of their first 9 seasons. Magic was a better ball handler and a slight edge in passing, but Bird was a better shooter, scorer, rebounder and defender. Those are SIGNIFICANT categories of basketball. Also Bird as a passer vs all other Forwards in his era ( PF and SF) finished first in assists per game for 8 seasons and finished 2nd in assists per game for 3 seasons and was once 4th in assists per game. Compare that to Magic who - vs all other PG - finished first in assists per game for 4 seasons and was 2nd in assists per game for 6 seasons and was also 4th and 7th. Bird actually dominated his position in assists per game more so than Magic did vs other PG's. I still give Magic a slight edge in passing but Bird was the better and more complete player. Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5 in DWS. In 1983 Bird finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award. Bird was on 3 all defense teams ( 2nd team) and Magic was never on an all defense team his entire career. Bird also created the 50-40-90 shooting club - did it in 87 and 88 - and was so close in 85 and 86 that if you take Bird's stats for those 4 years = Bird averaged 50-40-90 over 4 consecutive seasons. Magic never had a 50-40- 90 season. Thank you!

Larry was amazing, but I would personally edge Magic. In the words of Jordan: Magic made the triple-double stat a thing. Great video! Hopefully one day we can produce just as good content.

Actually Oscar Robertson made the triple double a thing as he averaged a triple double for his first FIVE years in the NBA!! The big O also was putting in 30 points per game WITHOUT a 3 point line and was an excellent defender!!

Magic played all five positions with the Lakers. Bird played one for the Celtics. They met 18 times in their NBA careers. Magic won 11. Lakers and Celtics met in the finals 3 times during that period. Lakers won 2, Celtics won 1. Rings? Bird =3, Magic =5. Heads up in "79 NCAA national championship. Bird, 40 minutes, 13 rebounds, 2 assists and 19 points. Magic, 35 minutes, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 24 points. Who's the boss?

Magic only jumped center at the start of game 6 in the 1980 Finals. Jim Chones guarded Dawkins and held Dawkins to 14 points. Magic never played Center during his entire NBA career. Kareem was also voted the 80 FMVP AFTER Magic's great game 6, but because Kareem was not present, the voters were asked to change their votes so Magic would get the award = see "Kareem" pages 140-141 for what happened. Bird was FMVP in 84, Kareem was FMVP in 85 and Magic was FMVP in 87 = What does that tell you about the strength of the Laker team?. Three other players besides Magic on the MSU team saw an NBA roster in Greg Kelser, Jay Vincent and Ron Charles ( drafted by the Bulls in 1980) and ISU???? Bird was double team every time he touched the ball. Bird also had 5 steals in that game but MSU was much better. Looking at skills = Bird was the better and more complete player.
