As I'm not a huge fan of growling in general, I'd prefer Jari singing everything clean.
The only bad thing about that version of "Loneliness" is that it's only ~13 minutes long.

I love this song. It's like a symphony to me. The section after first chorus is unbelievable. What a masterpiece.
"How does someone in the same session sound better on different songs?" Well, I'm guessing here, but you gotta know that Jari is missing a chunk of his lung that had to be surgically removed due to tuberculosis, which probably affects his stamina in one way or another.The fact that he still sounds THAT GOOD with parts of his lung missing boggles my mind.
Yeah and he left playing guitar on stage to Asim so he can focus his stamina more on vocals
well... I think it has more to do with his vocal technique. Not his screams, they are perfect, but his singing. He is putting a lot of strain on his voice when he sings. But that isn't really negative per say, it gives him the sound and emotion that makes his voice his. Although, it's not technically how you would take care of your voice. It gets tired a lot more easily than say someone who is classically trained. You can tell he gives it his all when he sings :)
It's wonderful isn't it? Jari's voice brings lots of emotion, I love it. Next time you may react to Land of Snow and Sorrow from the same session. For extra tears I suggest Loneliness from theirThe Forest Seasons album. This song is Jaris top vocal rendition iin a emotional way, it's also about his father's passing.

Thank you for this reaction. Bands like Wintersun and Jinjer have opened my mind to these types of vocals. Before if I heard growling or screams I would just turn if off but now after listening to reactions from vocal coaches and them stating how hard it is to do this and especially switch back and forward form clean to distorted I have found a new appreciation for how well trained these vocalist are. 2 years ago I would never have spent money on a band like Wintersun but now I have three of their albums and love each of them.
If you enjoy a mix of clean vocals and growls, I would also recommend checking out Amorphis (if you haven't already). Their singer, Tomi Joutsen, combines great, powerful cleans with some of the most crisp, amazing growls in today's metal scene.

well i consider myself pretty open minded when it comes to music and some of this is nice the melodies and chorus but the speed metal guitar and screaming destroys the mood and feel of what could have been a great piece. I am a huge Nightwish fan and i gave Wintersun a listen since they now have this bass player and drummer. Kai is a great fit. Not as passionate as Jukka on skins and time will tell about Jukka on base Hes got some massive shoes to fill I got to go this screaming is killing me

@@Mulukkis To a degree, yeah, but Marko has written for Nightwish albums, and there are other people involved in orchestrations, sound engineering, mixing, and so on. Jari wants to handle basically everything himself.

Sons of Winter and Stars is really different because lyrics are about dimensions and universe and Time is about time and how it operates in more personal level... this song is also really emotional cause we all are prisoners of time.

-65 Jari here, heh. Jari was a popular male name here in Finland during the 60's and to the 70's too. Not so much after that. Great reaction! I like your commitment to research and background of the band/performer in state of just cold reaction. Guess some like just cold reaction, without any research.

Regarding the different vocal quality, Sons of Winter and Stars was the LAST song recorded during that live rehearsal, and they went over a fair few songs. Likely it was a slight case of fatigue due to how incredibly intense these songs are.
its interesting when you see a couple like this, it does remind you that when the amazing guitarist frank marino said that heavy metal fans are the most genuinely nice crowds to be around, these two guys are soe sort of innocently decent, cheers

It took me awhile for this song to grow on me, but 'm liking it more each time. You just need to be relaxed and have good headphones on.
I think what makes Jari´s vocals so "different" (maybe not better but comming with a totally different tone) and, how to put it... touching? - in this song is the amount of pain, dispair but also defiance which comes with them. He is very good in setting the tone of the song with his vocals, which even without knowing the lyrics are able to bring across the emotion within. - Differently to Songs of Winter and Stars this song lyric-wise is of a "darker" tone - about Time (obviously), how it takes your life bit by bit relentlessly without looking back and no matter how hard you try to fight you´ll loose this battle eventually.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time and I"m glad to see it resonates the same with you.. it's just amazing.

I would say it was the song, as "Sons of Winter and Stars" has more vocal changes. In this the singing is more confined - thus perheps easier to analyse?

Wintersun, man. I know them from way back when they released their debut (my sister bought me the album as a birthday gift because she saw the cover and figured I'd like the music 😅) but every time I listen to them I get reminded of what an insane band they are. Jari as a composer and musician is next level. Devin esque. Every note perfected. Can't wait for your reaction to Loneliness (Winter). It's dark and sad enough as it is, but when you know the backstory it's just.. yeah. He lost his father in the autumn so Loneliness pretty much covers his feeling of sadness in the season that came after. And when you know how cold and dark the winters of Scandinavia are then...yeah. It's easy to imagine.
Also, he lost 1/4 of his lung due to him contracting tuberculosis and needing surgery when he served in the finnish military as part of his national defense duty when he was younger btw. Makes his vocals that more impressive.

Can't wait for Time II to come out and Jesus. There's some stuff that clearly surpasses this stuff or basically anything on the planet. The song "The Way of the Fire" is simply from another universe. They've performed it live many times and it's just perfection in all ways. However, in the mean time, if you want more Wintersun greatness, check out Eternal Darkness (Winter), it's pure epic black metal bliss

I always am amused, I love Sons or Winter and Stars, and everyone reacts to that live session. But this song is the better one in my opinion, it is this that made me a Wintersun fan, this song and its performance is flat out bloody amazing.
