Why I bought my first camera (Storytime)

- Why did I buy my first DSLR camera? The year was 2012. I had always had an interest in photography, but I ignored that interest for a long time. One day, as a journalism student at American University, I received the opportunity to report on an event in which First Lady Michelle Obama and Samantha Cameron were visiting the campus. I thought to myself, how can I possibly just go to this event and write about it? I needed a camera. Having the chance of photographing the First Lady is not something that happens every day. So I gathered all of my savings, went to the Best Buy around the corner (in Tenleytown) and purchased my very first DSLR - a Canon Rebel T2i with two kit lenses and began the art of photojournalism. This was the beginning of Nicole Glass Photography.

What was your first camera? Anyone else started with a Rebel?
Panasonic Lumix G85 my first camera.
Awesome! :)
My very first camera was an impulse buy back in 2001 from a Radioshack when I traveled out to Edmonton with my mother so see my sister and nephew. It was a Canon point and shoot 2.1Mp that took four AA batteries. Everything was auto exposure and the depth of field was nonexistent but I had a blast taking photos with it. Two years later I go to college. I tried two different programs but eventually dropped out of both after the first year with no idea what I truly wanted to do. The next few years I spent moving around to different places working random jobs just to make ends meet and even dabbled in mixed martial arts.
In 2009 I get laid off from my job. Lost with what to do with myself, I impulse buy another camera with some extra savings I had, the EOS 450D, and register for a photography program at the local college that year. I do well in my first year, gather a few lenses and upgrade my camera body to the EOS 50D. I make a few friends, shoot a wedding and even win an award at the colleges local photography competition. Unfortunately, as most stories go, love gets in the way. I have a few relationships during my time at college, have some bad experiences and quit the program just to distance myself from the situation. I work some menial labor job for the first year to buy my first new car. Then I change jobs to where I currently am manufacturing pharmaceuticals.
I have worked this manufacturing job now for over 7 years and in that time I have maintained a passive interest in photography but never took it to the level of being a real source of income. I have come to the point in my life where I can feel the time I have left weighing down on me and I don't want to work in manufacturing for the rest of my workable years as it is not an enjoyable job.
So now I am taking the skills I have learned over the years, the gear I have collected and starting with baby steps by working on it part time when I am not working. The best path I have seen for myself is commercial photography and the best way to start is from the bottom mastering the basics. So I have started a micro-stock portfolio and dedicated my free time to polishing and learning as many skills as I can. It's going to be a long road, but I can take it. I am time tested and strong. I am no longer the young kid I once was that had no idea how to handle life.
My first camera was a Rebel T2, It’s a 35mm film camera. Very inspiring, your story. I just subscribe.
I still don't have a camera, I've been clicking on my phone for past 3 years and build up my Instagram to 7k followers with 700+ posts, but now it's like I need a DSLR really badly, like I have the photographers eye but not the gear. And I cannot even ask my parents for a camera, I have to buy it myself, I am saving up money now. I hope like I'll buy a camera by next year 🤞
Hi Nicole, my first camera was a Nikon D200 and I still use it although i have now use Sony mirror-less.
I hear so many awesome things about Sony. If I ever get another brand I will go to Sony. :)
I really liked your comment about chasing what you love and not chasing the money. This is very relevant to my life at the moment. Love your videos and you tell a great story!
I'm glad you liked the story! Yeah, I'm definitely trying to focus on doing things that I love. I'm surrounded by people who hate their jobs, and I just don't want to be like them. What is your passion?
@@NicoleGlassHi Nicole I made a major career change and took up photography last year. I love London and RUclips so I made and posted my very first video last week. Loren
Absolutely love that story... your channel is one of my favorites Nicole. Be well, stay encouraged, and thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you Jacob!
You are more than welcome Nicole!@@NicoleGlass
Love the backstory! I also had an interest in photography starting young. But... life happened. Now that I am blessed to travel more and have more time, it has come around again. AND now I have RUclips which gives me seemingly endless opportunities to learn 📺. Your videos are a favorite of mine. Thanks for sharing so generously.
Traveling is so wonderful for so many things... I'm glad you're enjoying photography again! And thanks so much for the kind words, comments like these always make my day :)
My first real camera was a Nikon 5600 with the kit bundle. My wife and I were traveling from Alaska to Tennessee and I figured I needed an actual camera. My wife had a point-n-shoot Nikon so I was used to their interface and symbols.
Amazing
Great story! Your tales of being in press pools are always interesting.
Thanks Rob! Yeah, those are definitely the most stressful environments. But those situations really only come up when there's high ranking officials. I could never be a full time paparazzi....
Great story Nicole!
Thank you!
Very inspiring story. Please make videos on how to take perfect stock photos.
Thank you, I'm glad you like my story. There is no perfect stock photo, because it's not always the most "beautiful" photos that sell. Sometimes a photo of a garbage can makes a lot more $ than a photo of a beautiful girl on a beach. So in the end, you just want to upload good photos with a lot of variety. :)
@@NicoleGlass yes you are right 😊
Great story 👌
Thank you!
Are you from Maryland?
I lived in a few different places but yes, right now I'm in Maryland / DC :)
Storytime! Oooh… hold on, grabbing milk and cookies.
Lol!
